Prior to the Covid lockdown theyconcentrated on roasting for the wholesalemarket across the New Forest and beyond buthave now developed a busy online salesbusiness for individual consumers – subscribersand call in customers – many of whom willcome out of their way for a sublime cup ofethically sourced and specially roasted coffee.Talking about coffee is pretty important to theteam too – Jake explained to me so much aboutcoffee and how they identify the ones they willroast and blend. The dark-roasted coffee thatgained popularity from the Italian market isoften poor quality and high in caffeine. CoffeeMongers offer a variety of high-gradeflavoursome coffees with 30% less caffeine andsubtle flavours to suit all palates. They roastsmall amounts and can buy a harvest fromgrowers across the world that they know andhave built a relationship with. Arabica coffee isthe most popular type of bean used for asweeter, less harsh taste while Robusta ischeaper to produce and higher in caffeine, witha more bitter flavour. Buying direct fromgrowers means they can purchase a wholeharvest and create their own blends – this arethen introduced to their keen coffee customersand is offered as single origin coffee. Oncetasted many find that they can never go back tothe mass produced coffees offered by the bigbrands.During lockdown they developed the mail orderand subscription services and are now alsowelcoming customers into the coffee bar atAmpress Park. Regularly supplying local eateriesand businesses such as garden centres, CoffeeMongers start by agreeing a “go to” blend andenable customers to try some more unusualcoffees and to be very flexible about amountsand re-ordering. After some sampleroasting in the probat mini roaster the beansare roasted for about 15 minutes in their 20kgBuhler roaster.Globe-trotting has been the shared backgroundin this team and their commitment toenvironmentalissues is clear –previously the localHQ for SurfersAgainst Sewage,Coffee Mongers arereally lookingforward to theirnext venture – theyhave taken on theadjacent unit andare dividing thespace to productionand the customerarea. Now thatlockdown is over,they plan to restart coffee clubs, music eventsand to have a great space for people to pop infor a coffee, pastries and to chill out.
