I’ve been playing for the Cheetahs for
eight years. Time flies and I will forever
remain grateful for the opportunity to
have been a part of the Cheetah family.
The saying ‘All good things come to an
end’ has become a reality for me. It’s
the end of a great journey, but also the
breaking of a new dawn as I believe
that the opportunity to play for the
Stormers has many great opportunities
in store for my professional career as
there is an opportunity to compete at an
international level again; something that I
haven’t done in almost three years.
A career highlight that stands out for
me was playing my 100th game, on
16 October 2020, for the Cheetahs. It’s an
achievement that not many people reach,
so I cherish it wholeheartedly.
My fondest memories of playing for
the Cheetahs is winning the Currie Cup
in 2016 and 2019.
Bloemfontein has been good to me –
the people, as well as the Cheetahs, made
Bloem my home. When I got here I did not
have any family here; however, over the
course of the past eight years this became
home and family.
The people of Bloem are amazing.
Being a boy from the Paarl, I would never
have thought that I would receive so
much warmth, love and acceptance in
the city as a player. I’ve really enjoyed the
energy of the people, on and off the field -
their support has always been amazing!
I will be joining the Stomers after
the Currie Cup. I’m excited to be useful
wherever they need me. I’m committed
to work hard to get some game time
in the United Rugby Championship.
The experience one gains in the
Championship no amount of money can
buy.
A number of people have played an
important role in my rugby career. My
father, Claude Blommetjies, has always

A self-made man
Clayton Blommetjies has been a household name on the local rugby scene for many
years as a Free State Cheetahs players. As a rugby player, he is considered a game
changer – dangerous and with an X-factor to his game. He is also well known for
his broad smile and his trademark dreads. Here he looks back at his eight years at the
Cheetahs on the eve of him departure from the City of Roses to join the Stormers…
been supportive of my career, on and
off the field. In fact, my entire family has
been supportive – each in their own way,
including my fiancée, Kristle Peterson, my
mother, Francina Blommetjies, and my
extended family.
My fiancée and my daughter, Clay-
Neesha, are the ‘two girls’ in my life.
They are always supportive of me and
they are my reason for always giving
better than my best on and off the field.
I’m not an outgoing person, and
therefore my favourite spot place to be is
at home.
Five words that describe me best as a
person are fun, father, caring, humble and
committed to anything I put my mind to.
Ok, that’s more than five!
For me, a man is successful in life if he
has a firm family foundation with Biblical
values and a supportive spouse.
One thing most people don’t know
about is that with me, what you see is
what you get. I’m the same person on and
off the field, always smiling and always
thankful for the opportunities that come
my way in life.
Life has ups and downs, and successes
and failures, but through it all I
believe that one has to boldy face each
challenge in order to grow not only as an
athlete, but also as a person.
I’m looking forward to my move to
Cape Town, because I will be doing what
I love (playing rugby), whilst sharing this
new chapter in life with my fiancée and
my daughter.
A beautiful car is one of my
weaknesses, and that is also the reason
why I recently bought myself a bright red
Mustang.
I’m also fond of jet skiing. I’m not really
an adrenaline junkie; however, I enjoy
playing around on the water as I find it
relaxing.

Jan en Petria Smit, Bloemfontein se bekende argitekduo,
vier vanjaar drie dekades as argitekte. Hier deel
hulle hul sieninge oor argitektuur, maar ook breër.
Eerstens, baie geluk op 30 jaar
in die bedryf. Wat was van die
hoogtepunte?
Dankie, dis lank om te oorleef! Dit voel
soos ’n ewigheid en tergelykertyd
soos gister wat ons begin het. Daar
is soveel hoogtepunte. Toekennings,
reise van Malawi na Egipte na Europa,
na die ou Oos-Europa, na Australië of
sommer net in Namibië of Botswana:
ander mense se leefpatrone en
gewoontes interesseer ons baie, want
die argitektuur vloei uit die leefwyses
uit. Dan ook kongresaanbiedings regoor
die wêreld. Ons het ses maande in
Leicester, Engeland, klasgegee en elke
naweek gereis na ’n ander deel van
die land. Verder bly dit ʼn hoogtepunt
om ’n gelukkige kliënt te hê na ’n lang
ontwerp- en bouproses. Dit bly seker die
hoogtepunt: om mense se lewe te verryk
deur argitektuur - wat ’n positiewe beroep
is dit nie!
Wat is kenmerkend van ’n Jan en
Petria Smit-ontwerp?
Terreingetrou (pas aan op terrein),
materiaal-eerlik met ’n besliste
omgewingsklankie (Vrystaats in Vrystaat,
Noord-Kaaps in die Kalahari). Met ander
woorde, ons het nie ’n “signature style”
nie, maar mens kan sien dis dieselfde “taal”
terwyl elke gebou sy eie “stem” het.
Julle is ook betrokke by die
Universiteit van die Vrystaat se
Argitektuurdepartement.
Ja, ons is nog albei op kontrakbasis
betrokke by die meestersgraad. Dit bly ’n
groot voorreg om na 30 jaar steeds met
toekomstige argitekte te werk en hulle
voor te berei vir ’n baie moeilike beroep
onder die huidige ekonomiese klimaat.
Julle huis teen ’n klipkoppie in
Waverley spreek van julle respek vir
die natuur en landskap.
Ons het nie een boom verwyder op die
koppie nie maar eerder toegelaat dat
die bome en klippe ons lei om die huis
tussen dit in te pas: dit het die plan help
vorm. Noord was ononderhandelbaar,
so alle leefdele front noord en word
geskei van die nie-leefdele suid met ’n
dik rooibaksteenmuur. Dit is eintlik twee
blokke geskei deur ’n muur en met elk
sy eie sinkdak. Die helling is steil en die
gebou strek oor drie vlakke soos wat dit
opstap teen Grant’s Hill.
Watter geboue in Bloemfontein en die
Vrystaat bewonder julle?
Daar is goeie historiese geboue in
Bloemfontein. Die Vierde Raadsaal en
NALN is gunstelinge. Kontemporêr is
Roodt Argitekte se stal-huisomskepping
in Ray Champion-rylaan ’n pragtige
werk. Dan verder in die Vrystaat: ou
sandsteenhuise in die Oos-Vrystaat
op plase. Die hoogtepunt is egter die
graansilo’s (verkieslik die tradisioneles of
die heel modernes uit vlekvrye staal). Die
rede: hulle eerlikheid! Daar is nie een ding
aan daardie geboue wat nie funksioneel
en opreg is nie, en dit is hoe argitektuur
behoort te wees: opreg en eerlik en wys
wat hulle doen.
Julle het ’n wenvennootskap. Wat is
julle resep?
Om elke nuwe kliënt as uniek te sien en
om nie ’n worsmasjien van ’n praktyk
te probeer maak om geld te maak nie.
Mense bestee baie geld om te bou, so
ons bestee baie tyd aan hulle. As hulle na
ons kom, werk hulle met ons - dis baie
persoonlik. Ons is baie verskillend. Ons
weet egter waar ons wil uitkom, al werk
ons vanaf twee verskillende hoeke. Elk
respekteer dus die ander een se kennis en
vaardighede, wetende dat dit tot ’n beter
eindproduk sal bydra. Ons glo kliënte
voel ook aan dat hulle die beste van twee
wêrelde in een pakket kry.
Julle sou sekerlik enige ander plek
in die land kon woon. Hoekom
Bloemfontein?
Ja, die meeste van ons werk is tans buite
Bloemfontein en daardie vraag kom
gereeld verby. Die universiteitswerk hou
ons ook hier en tans werk ons albei aan
ons PhD’s. Dit behoort teen volgende
jaar voltooi te wees en dan sal ons sien
waarheen!
Laastens, wat sou julle graag as jul
nalatenskap wou sien?
Daar is al meer as ʼn duisend studente
deur ons hande en oral begin oudstudente
uitstekende werk doen en
presteer.
Dis baie bevredigend en seker ’n
nalatenskap. Wat die praktyk betref:
wel, ons hoop die klompie goed wat
ons gedoen het, wel eendag as goeie
voorbeelde van ’n era beskou sal word.
Goeie argitektuur het die gawe om mense
te oorleef en steeds in die volgende
generasies vreugde aan mense te bring.

Die Manshaarsalon specialises in haircuts and beard

When asked what they love most about male grooming,
they said: “To see the transformation from when a client

immediately see the results.”
Die Manshaarsalon stands out from their competition by
remaining consistent with good service across all three
branches. “We ensure that you will always be satisfied
when you walk out. We have a big market and try to satisfy
everyone.”
Looking back at 2021, the biggest highlight for the salon
was the opening of two new branches. “It was only with
faith that we could do this because 2020 was a year filled
with lots of uncertainty with lockdown and the frequent
restrictions.” Bearing this in mind, the salon has some
exciting plans in the pipeline and cannot wait to share
them with all their clients.
Lizanda advises those starting out to not spend money you
do not have yet. “Rather save longer, and do something
later instead of incurring debt. Otherwise, in the end, you’re
only a slave to debt.”

tsp) sugar; 470g stone-ground flour or any strong white
bread flour; 45ml (3 tbsp) extra virgin olive oil; 15ml (1
tbsp) salt
Toppings:
45ml (3 tbsp) olive oil
Assorted vegetables such as:
Red/yellow/orange bell peppers; Mini bell peppers (variety of
colors); Cherry tomatoes; Red onions; Broccoli; Asparagus (split
in half ); Fresh basil; Capers; Olive slices; Herbs
Be careful not to overload your focaccia with tomatoes, zucchini
or squash. Be sure each vegetable is very thinly sliced.
Method:
In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm water, yeast and
sugar. Let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until it foams.
Add the flour and mix, using the paddle attachment, until the
dough starts coming together.
Add the olive oil and salt.
Swap the paddle attachment for the dough hook. Knead for
about 15 minutes or until the dough is sticky but smooth. Add
more flour if needed.
Transfer the dough to a large, lightly-greased mixing bowl and
cover with a wet towel or cling wrap. Place in a warm place and
let the dough rise for an hour, or until it doubles in size.
With your fist, gently punch down the dough, then pull the
edges of the dough to the centre.
Place the dough on a lightly-floured surface. Knead two or
three times, then shape it into a ball. Allow it to rest at room
temperature for 20 minutes, and then in the fridge for another 20
minutes; this will make it easier to roll out and shape.
Transfer the dough to a lightly-greased 28 x 35cm baking pan.
Using your hands, spread out the dough to fit the pan; if it won’t
spread to the corners, rest it in the fridge for a few minutes and
try again.
Brush the dough with oil, decorate with the vegetables and
herbs of your choice, and sprinkle with salt.
Bake in a preheated oven at 175° C for 35 to 40 minutes or until
golden brown. Show off your creation on a wooden board!

• Have an idea of a garden design beforehand. Think of what
exactly you want to do on the focaccia beforehand.
• Don’t fight the veg. Go with the natural direction of how the
vegetables grow.
• Be ready to protect your toppings. If vegetables start to overcook,
over-brown or even burn, cover in foil to protect your
design. And make sure your vegetables are pressed into the
dough – this will also prevent overbrowning.

AN INDOOR
HERB GARDEN
A sunny windowsill, which receives at least six hours of direct sunlight a day, is
all you need to grow a kitchen herb garden of your dreams. Many of your go-to
herbs like parsley, basil and thyme will thrive indoors with the right care. Keep
the harvest going all winter long and liven up your favourite soups, veggies
and roasts with a never-ending supply of freshly picked leaves.

Basil
Whether it is to make pesto or a tomato-based sauce, many
gardeners who love cooking Italian food find basil a must to
grow. Grow basil in a large, deep pot to allow you to strike
the required balance between good drainage and moisture
retention. Use high-quality potting soil and feed it with an allpurpose
fertilizer.
Chives
The chive plant has a light onion flavour and its grass-like leaves
are popular in soups and salads. It needs good drainage and feed
it with an all-purpose fertilizer.
Oregano
A classic seasoning for Italian dishes, sandwiches and pizza, this
drought-resistant perennial is easy to grow indoors, but err on
the side of giving it more, rather than less, sunlight than you think
it may need in winter. It also needs good drainage and feed with
an all-purpose fertilizer.
Parsley
Parsley falls into two categories. The curly type can be used
for cooking but the flat-leaf type has more culinary value,
lending a stronger flavour to your Italian dishes. Parsley needs
good drainage, but not so sharp that water drains through
immediately; it likes evenly moist soil. Use a high-quality potting
soil. Minimal fertilization required.
Rosemary
Rosemary leaves are commonly used to flavour meaty stews
(but remove the herb before serving). Like basil, rosemary is a bit
fussier to grow indoors than most other herbs. This is because it

thyme) and meat sauces. Thyme is the opposite of rosemary in one
respect: it likes low humidity. Thyme is drought-tolerant and can
die if it gets too much water. It needs sharp drainage and it has
minimal fertilization needs.

Anthonie Du Plessis believes that his greatest mentor
and inspiration is the Saviour. He is his moral compass, his strength
and his direction. His inspiration for life is founded on following His

obstacles or challenges placed in front of me.
“I have a passion to identify potential in people and then look at ways to
provide a platform for them to develop and grow, not only in their skills set but
also as individuals.” For Anthonie seeing people grow and reach the potential
that not they even realize they have and then witness how they grow and
mature energizes him.
Anthonie is responsible for all aspects of Financial Management, Operational
Management, Strategic Planning and Development, as well as all aspects of
Clinical-, Risk-, Quality- and Human Resources Management at Pasteur Eye
Hospital. “I prefer to translate inspiration into ‘A person’s calling’. I have had two
huge business mentors in my career in the medical industry who were leaders
at various multinational companies and still are at the helm of a very successful
medical company; both of which today are dearly appreciated and respected
friends.”
He thrives off his motto “Embrace the suck” no matter how tough the
challenge/obstacle that lies ahead of you, through grace, there is always a way
– see it through.
For Anthonie success is knowing who you are. “For me
personally it is in realizing my dependence on the Lord.
I don’t measure success in who has the most
money, largest business or highest-ranking
job. Success is finding and excelling in your
purpose. Once you function within your
purpose you realize it is there to serve your
community and those around you. There is
nothing more satisfying.”
When he is not hard at work he spends time
with his wife and children. Anthonie could also
be found helicopter flying, but admits that is has been put
on the back shelf for now. “I also have a fervent interest
in bonsai cultivation.”

is: ‘You get what you focus on, so focus
on what you want’.”
Wimpie Nel says all experts at some
stage or another in their lives were
at the bottom and a beginner,
and through persistence and
determination reached their goals and
succeeded in their careers. “During
this process mistakes were made, and
these mistakes and challenges were
turned into opportunities to create
success and achieve whatever I set my
mind to.”
Clifford Human says that Aguila aims

Jurie Schoeman
Jurie Schoeman is the Branch Manager for Nashua Bloemfontein.
He is responsible for the training and development of all
employees, and also for all the operational functions of the branch.
This includes customer service, debtors and sales.

Jurie says he draws his inspiration from the Bible. “There are great examples of
successful entrepreneurs, such as Solomon who was blessed with wisdom that
clearly showed in his business decisions. Abraham was in charge of a large group
of herdsman, which caused the nature of his business to grow, and the change
allowed him to move freely to do God’s work.” The way Jurie defines success is:
“Having supernatural peace within yourself and your family and spreading it to
the people around you and investing in your team and having the same vision.”
Jurie’s wife Dia, who he says is his best friend, and his beautiful children, Lionel
Annebel and Rebekah, are what motivate him to get out of the bed in the
morning. In his free time he enjoys spending time and traveling with them.
According to him, he has three different mindsets or habits that keep me
going. The first being a positive mindset. “Your thoughts will determine almost
everything in your life, literally almost everything. Nobody becomes successful
without incredible positivity and you need to adopt a positive mind set; a goaldriven
mind set.” The second and third mindset is one of faith and patience. “You
bring the grind, and the grace will follow!
“We make it a habit of recruiting people who fit this mindset and culture and
are able to play in a big team – our Bloem branch hosts more than 100 diverse
people in a building, but we try and align our mindsets for the best teamwork.”
Jurie believes that Nashua has no competition, as the business goes above
and beyond to accommodate their clients. “Our business model is centred on
the consumers’ needs. We have the dominant market share (50%) in printing
solutions in South Africa, but also playing competitively in newer developed
specialist markets, as solar and alternative energy solutions, which provide our
clients with total office solutions – not just yesteryear’s product lines.”
Looking back at the past year, Jurie says the biggest highlight was the way
in which his team stood together and overcame the hardships that 2020
threw at them. “We came out stronger and wiser than
before and ended our financial year as one of
the best.” The Nashua team renewed their focus
for this year by ensuring that they are at the
forefront of as many technological advances
and energy solutions as possible. This will allow
them to cater to the ever-changing and growing
needs of their clientele.

Richard Rodrigues
Richard Rodrigues is the CEO of Zatara Property Group (ZPG).
Seventy percent of his job entails strategic planning and financial
reviews, while 30% of his time is taken up by the liaising and
planning of new and existing developments.

Richard loves a pizza and is actually
opening a small pizza shop in 2022, so
look out for that!
Richard says what sets ZPG apart from its competitors is the fact that the
business is flexible and open to doing things differently. “Due to being a family
run business I believe we react quickly and efficiently and because we have a
personal relationship with most of our tenants.”
He defines success as “enjoying what you do”. Richard says recently he has come
to the realisation that “a balanced life between faith, family and friends alongside
work is what defines true success. You’re simply happier when the balance is
there.”
Richard says his strategy for success is to associate himself with the best people
in their respective fields – from the best accountant to the best engineer. “One
learns a lot if you’re open to asking questions. I’ve been asked many times how
I got involved in businesses that I had no idea about initially. One always needs
to start somewhere and associating yourself with the correct team and people
helps a lot.”
When asked what habits makes him successful, he says: “In business, things
rarely go according to plan, while business will always be a constant fight for
terms, success and time. Stepping back and carefully assessing the change in
circumstances is perhaps a strength that’s made me come out on top more
times than not.” He adds that appreciating the fact that you will not always come
out with a win, but learning from the losses and safeguarding against such in
future is probably the best lessons he has learnt.
Richard says the biggest highlight of 2021 is the fact that ZPG was able to
line up tenants to fill 90% of vacancies within the year and the first quarter
of 2022. “We managed to complete three large projects in 2020/2021,
which we were planning during lockdown.”
Despite the pandemic that knocked the property industry, ZPG survived.
“We mustn’t forget how fortunate we were to weather such a significant
storm.”
Richard says the company’s focus for this year is to implement and
stabilise on all the planning and the changes that were made in 2021 to
adapt to the new normal.
RICHARD’S FINANCE TIPS:
If you don’t take risks early on you will never know what you could have
achieved. Most successful people in business have pretty much risked it all
early on, and I’m a firm believer in the fact that you should.
Advice also only really helps when you are willing to sacrifice TIME. Almost
every successful person I know worked or works 18-hour days for years and
decades to get to where they are. You can achieve more than the rest if you
prepared to work for it.

“Success should be the ability to have time to spend with
your family and friends, financial stability, and peace in your heart
after a long day’s effort and thoughts.”
This is according to Dr Henk Jacobs who is a medical doctor, GP and owner
of Doctor on Call after-hours units, as well as Dr HM Jacobs Inc. & Associates.
He also works at EmoyaMed and Stirling Hospital, where he is a physical
rehabilitation doctor with Greymil Physical Rehabilitation.
When the introverted doctor is not caring for his patients, he loves to enjoy a
meal at Avanti Woodland Hills, or to spend time with his family. Some of his
fondest memories of last year was the birth of his baby girl and opening two
new practices, one at Pelonomi Netcare and another at EmoyaMed.
He draws his inspiration from his wife and family, together with hours and
hours of hard work and seeing the progression and improvement in patients
with gratitude also gives him hope. What motivates him to get out of the bed
in the morning are the beautiful Bloemfontein sunrises and the voices of his
wife and one-year-old daughter.
Dr Henk does not believe in looking at other practices as competition but
rather as a helping hand which assists him with those in desperate need of
medical attention.
He advises that one should constantly analyse situations and be consistent
when taking on a task or challenge. “I believe that people should work hard,
believe in themselves, chase the dreams and purpose, and always slim down
on the overheads.”
Even though working hard is very important to this Bloemfontein doctor, he
believes in taking time out for himself: “I think time for yourself can be alone
or with family and friends, to recharge with a braai, mountain biking, a long
walk, or just well-earned break, or a holiday by the sea,” he
concludes.

Vian Marais
Business owner Vian Marais draws his inspiration from the
Bible. He says that to be able to get up every day and live
his dream, as well as being able to make a difference in
someone’s life, and every satisfied smile on a customer’s face
makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Vian says that to be able to survive in the business world
one needs to believe in yourself and one’s team, and you
must work hard every day. “You need to get up when you
encounter a setback, look up, and have a positive mindset
because it brings positive things.”
He runs his business on integrity and always remaining
humble and not letting the bad days get to him, as he
believes that success is getting up again when you fall or face
challenges.
“Integrity is our signature stamp on every vehicle we repair.
We strive for excellent customer service and high quality
workmanship. Our industry is full of new challenges and you
need to stay abreast of all changes and new technology.”
The last two years have been a major challenge in the
industry due to the pandemic, but with grace, the team at
Autobody Worx did not have to let any of their staff go and
the full team is still running the business.
As an owner, Vian prioritises the growth of his staff members
through providing training and courses and by encouraging
them to get involved in the community.

“I absolutely enjoy what I do and that is where I get my
inspiration from. I love the law because it makes sense to me
and I believe that legal supremacy is paramount in governing
our society.” This is according to Lucian, who says that as a
director he is part of a firm and a team where they believe
in setting the standard by being innovative in their thinking,
advice and service delivery to clients. “We are solution driven
and subscribe to constantly evolving in our service delivery
to clients, whose interest and satisfaction is of paramount
importance to us.”
He considers last year as a highlight in his career. “It was my
first year in my new role at the firm as the Head of the Dispute
Resolution Practice Group and added to that, we as a firm
managed to survive the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic
thanks to the strong support of our staff and clients. Our
firm was again named as the Best Law Firm in Central South
Africa, now for the 11th consecutive year as awarded by PMR.
Africa, which we are all proud of.” Lucian was also elected
as a council member of the National Legal Practice Council
of South Africa where he serves as a member of the Rules,
Ethics and Policies Committee, as well as the Disciplinary and
Oversight Committee.
As much as he enjoys work, he is motivated by his family
and his profession as he has a real passion for both. “I do take
time off and that I spend with family. We enjoy and do look
forward to holidays and seeing new places in South Africa.
My kids are still young, so it is especially important for me to
spend time with them.”

Lesley Mokgoro
Lesley Mokgoro is the Chief Executive Officer at Phatshoane Henney
Attorneys, the largest law firm in Central South Africa. He is a
Councillor at the Free State Legal Practice and also serves as board
member of the UFS Law Faculty Board of Control.

This is according to Lesley, who says that some of the highlights that stood out
for him this past year is the firm being named as the Best Law Firm in Central
South Africa for the 11th consecutive year, and on a more personal note, the
Board of Directors’ decision to elect him to serve as the CEO of the firm. Lesley’s
inspiration flows from seeing how their professionals are able to provide efficient
and workable solutions to complex legal matters in a speedy, cost-effective and
simplified manner. In addition to this, it is always great for him to soundboard
with legends in the legal field on strategic matters, who all serve with him on
their Board of Directors. He believes that Phatshoane Henney Attorneys sets
standards through their specialisation and how they continuously work on
enhancing how they render services to all clients.
“With our diverse team in terms of race, gender and age we strike an efficient
balance in terms of succession-planning and taking the lead as techno-savvy
lawyers. The ability to identify and source new streams of work through our

Success to him is defined as the courage

Corneil Muller
Corneil Muller is an acclaimed musician who was
born and bred in the City of Roses. From a young
age he sang in various vocal groups and gave solo
performances, both as a singer and cellist.
“Balancing two worlds as a professional singer (The Voice
South Africa, Season 3) and also being a team member
at Graydient Creative Consultants, I draw inspiration from
successful and well balanced individuals. My mentor strategy
is to constantly surround yourself with people who have
dreams and ambition; they will help you push for and realize
your own.” This is according to Corneil, who bases his life on
the belief of balance. “Work hard and play harder. And exercise
(very) regularly.” The highlights of the past year for him was
working with creative and inspiring people, and seeing
how the community could bounce back from a crippling
pandemic. “From my fellow artists around the world and coworkers
at Graydient, suppliers and clients – I was and still am
inspired by people’s strength and resilience.”
He also believes that old-fashioned marketing is back again
and in popular demand. “Make sure you do not only focus on
social media strategies, but also get back to the basics.”
So, what motivates Corneil to get out of the bed in the
morning? “Balancing a healthy lifestyle – we’ll I try… so
starting my day with a good strength training session in the
gym even when it is -7 degrees Celsius!”

Dr Johan Jordaan
Dr Johan Jordaan is currently in full time private practice at
Life Rosepark Hospital as a Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon and an
Intensive Care Specialist. He is a part-time cardiothoracic
surgery and critical care senior lecturer at the University
of the Free State and is actively involved in research in the
department. He is also a part-time lecturer at the Central
University of Technology in clinical technology.
In his free time he loves to do trail and road running, and he
enjoys drinking “a beautiful” Bordeaux on a Saturday evening.
Dr Jordaan loves to teach and draws energy from the
successes of his students. “When something is important
enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favour.
Therefore I surround myself with positive and driven people
who are as committed as I am.” Looking back at the past
year, Dr Jordaan says he was fortunate enough to participate
in international conferences. He delivered three invited
international presentations and co-authored three published
papers. “I was able to make a positive contribution during the

In 2021, he also completed the Ultra-Trail Cape Town and
the Ultra-Trail Drakensberg 100 mile trail run and qualified
for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc that takes place in France in
August this year. He believes trail running, pushing himself
to the point where he wants to give up, extreme sports,
mountaineering and being able to summit some of the
highest peaks in the world and ultimately pushing his body
to the point of exhaustion contributes to his overall success.

With their business and working with
people being their passion, Steven le
Roux, Chris Cloete and their team have
been successfully running Nissi Risk
Management in the city since 2000.
This is a local business that offers armed
reaction, guarding, alarm systems, rural
and agricultural security solutions, and
much more. This well-oiled machine
is run on the values of empowering
relationships, passion, and taking
ownership of what you do.
Get It Bloemfontein had the opportunity
to sit down with Steven and Chris to
hear what their recipe for success is, as
well as how they juggle family life and
business. Both of them consider family
a very important life anchor and when
they are not at work Steven could be
found spending time with his family,
being on the open road on his Harley-
Davidson or enjoying a good steak at a
local restaurant. Chris could be found
on the golf course, watching sport or
spending time with his children.
Being the managing director of the
company, Steven says that he believes
that it is important to always continue
working on your skills set, taking
interest in your staff, and because the
world is ever-changing one should
always try to improve one’s product.
He defines success as being content
with where you are in your life and with
what you have achieved.
The business boasts close relationships
with their clients as they believe that
each one of their clients have different
needs and that can only be catered for
with personal relationships.
Chris, who is the operations director,
says that their business is their
passion and they aim to ensure
safer communities and place extra
emphasis on the safety of vulnerable
communities and businesses – such
as farmers. He explained that in the
upcoming months their business will
be utilising more effective technology,
as well as expanding.
Both say that they have nothing
but thankfulness for the people of
Bloemfontein for the support that has
been shown to Nissi over the years.

“I’m the owner and coach at CrossFit Hymn. In March 2022,
my biggest dream became a reality. By faith and grace, we
opened CrossFit Hymn in Bloemfontein.”
“My everyday inspiration is to be the best version of myself,

willing to take calculated risks and believe success is the sum
of small efforts, repeated day by day.
“My key to my business is to have a plan, a deadline, selfdiscipline,
a focused system and taking action.” Zander
believes in not being a follower in the fitness industry but
to show value and build your own community. “My every
day aim is to influence those in need of support. I try to
understand their deep emotional need for training and focus
on personal goals and small classes.”
Zander’s financial advice: “Always dream big but start small
and keep track of your balance sheet. Take responsibility for
your decisions good or bad and try to improve daily. I will
always believe I can do better.
CrossFit Hymn is still in baby shoes, but I know I must just
keep moving and trust the process.
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day
out. If I can look back and see the change in people’s lives I
was successful.” He smiles, “I’m so thankful: I’m living my dream.
I’m here to serve my community! As Albert Einstein said: ‘If
I can look back and see the change in people’s lives, I was
successful’.” He concluded by saying that CrossFit Hymn is
nothing, but the community and his members are everything.

Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa Manufacturing Manager
Linda Khuzwayo
Linda Khuzwayo is the Manufacturing Manager at Coca-Cola
Beverages South Africa based in Bloemfontein. He oversees
the manufacturing operation, which includes the supply,
production, quality and engineering departments that report
directly to him. His job includes making sure that good
quality Coca-Cola products are produced at the right time
and right cost, and that it is done safely and sustainably.

Linda firmly believes that the mind set of “hard work never killed anyone” and
the willingness to learn is a mindset that makes him successful. He draws
inspiration from many people and if he had to pick just one, it would be
the late former CEO of Southwest Airlines. “He was very instrumental in the
creation of a low-cost airline industry. He achieved this by coming up with
very innovative ideas, focusing on what the customer is willing to pay for,
and ensuring that his employees were happy always. He was a believer that
successful businesses hire for attitude rather than skills, as skills can always be
taught. “
Linda says that distinguishing yourself from your competitors is easy when
you are reliable as an individual, and also when you have the capacity to learn
and you have the determination to be a better person today than the person
you were yesterday.
Looking back at the past year, Linda says the best highlight on
a personal front was the birth of his daughter, “a
precious gift from God”. On the work front
it was the turnaround seen at the plant
because of his colleague’s hard work and
determination.
This year Linda plans to seek ways to improve
his leadership capabilities and his relationships
both at work and at home.
As a Sabbath-observing Christian, he takes
time to rest every Saturday to connect with
his maker. “Besides that, I really enjoy spending
time travelling with my wife and children. If time
and resources permit, I make it a point to take
advantage of it.”

LINDA’S FINANCE TIPS:
Contentment in life will take you far (not to be mistaken with lack of ambition).
Establish a healthy balance between consumption and saving/investing. Just
remember that there will always be the latest generation of a cell phone, car, TV,
you name it, but don’t get too sucked in to those things; they will blow a big
hole in your pocket.
