By Mike Steele, Porsche of Melbourne
Spring is almost here! Spring marks the
return of Porsche of Melbourne’s Annual
Tech Session and Open House. Spring also
signals a new driving events season for all
you track fanatics! This edition will be a
teaser for what we have planned at this year’s
Tech Session on March 5th.
Traditionally, we have displayed current
model cars and answered questions about
them. Last year we changed it up a little bit
by asking some of our event drivers to display
their “track weapons” of choice. We then had
a question and answer session not only for
our technicians, but with some of our local
drivers as well.
This year we plan on starting with a diagnostic
session on a later model vehicle. We hope
to take some of the “magic” out of what we
do to ascertain the cause of a malfunction.
We will have a live demonstration of the
capabilities of our current generation of
PIWIS testers. PIWIS stands for Porsche
Integrated Workshop Information System.
These testers have access to more than just
diagnostics via the OBD-2 connector. They
can also display wiring diagrams, workshop
manuals, and technical information bulletins.
Beyond these abilities, they are full function
oscilloscopes as well.
We will “bug” a vehicle with several different
faults, and show the capabilities of the tester
in helping to find the cause. We will also
show the limitations of the tester. That is,
the tester is a tool; it does not tell us what to
replace. Sometimes it just shows us where to
look. Speaking of knowing where to look, we
can take a peek into some of the information
stored in the various control units and what
it means.
Once we have fixed our demonstration
vehicle we will move on to the driving
events information session. We will again
cover modifications available for improving
your track day experience. This will include
performance tweaks, safety recommendations,
and maintenance suggestions:
COLUMN
--For our performance tweaks portion of the
session, we have invited Fabspeed to show
off some of their wares and workmanship.
Fabspeed offers simple exhaust system
replacement up to entire packages to increase
the output of your vehicle.
--For the safety portion, we will have a few
different types of roll cage installations for
you to see and ask questions. We will also
discuss other items you need to stay safe,
to include safety harnesses, helmets, and
personal protective wear.
addressed for track driving.
