The “Legends of Motorsports” event was held at Sebring Raceway
December 3 – 5, and what an event it was! It certainly lived up to its
name in every respect.
It was the season finale of the Legends of Motorsports Racing Series,
hosted by the famous Indy Car racing legend Bobby Rahal and his
Rahal Racing Team. Bobby is an avid race car collector and a historic
race car driver himself. He had his stable of vintage race cars there
to participate in the race activities. Brian Redman was the Grand
Marshal for the event and drove a 1970 Chevron B16 during the
weekend race schedule. Bobby Rahal drove a 1969 Brabham BT29 to
victory in his feature race event on Sunday.

There were 126 race entries in all, including almost every Porsche;
from 356’s to 911 RSR’s to the legendary Porsche 962’s (five of them),
and of course, the yellow Le Mans Prototype Porsche RS Spyder. There
was an equally large number of Chevrons, Lolas, Jaguars, McLarens,
and Lotus race cars, with Jaguar being the featured marquee for the
event. There were also a number Ferraris, Alfas, Corvettes, Mustangs,
and other unique one-off race cars as well.

Through the efforts of Zone 12 Representative Jennifer Barrows and
PCA, we were afforded a dedicated Porsche Corral for our members
who chose to purchase the three day all-inclusive corral pass. And
what a bargain it was, with the full three day admission included,
along with dedicated track touring sessions specifically for those with
the car corral passes.

Most of us have done “touring laps” at various Sebring and Daytona
events, but none of them came close to matching the pure excitement
of these special lap sessions led by the new super-charged 510 HP
Jaguar XK-R. It was 30 minutes of pure fun and adrenaline around
the 3.7 mile, 17 turn racing circuit.
There were many opportunities throughout the event to take
photographs, talk to the drivers and racing teams, and wander freely
around the paddock enjoying the race experience. Bobby Rahal,
Brian Redman, Doc Bundy, and others were available and accessible
for photos and autographs as the opportunity arose, or at dedicated
fan sessions during the meet. It was fun saying hello to Bobby as he
was uncovering his beautifully restored black XKE-Jaguar roadster.
He seemed to be an easy-going regular guy, and just another car
enthusiast like the rest of us.
We had about 20 Porsches of all models parked in the Porsche Corral
on Saturday, with more sprinkled among the regular spectator
parking. Just about everything was represented, from two recent
GT3RS’s, to a 356 Speedster.
PCA members came from our own Space Coast Region, the Gold
Coast Region, the Suncoast Region, the Citrus Region, and from
many more regions across the country. Everyone was there to have a
great time and to see their favorite race cars in action on the historic
track.
