The Dyno Day Dish
Article and Photos by Tom Gorsuch
Fifteen members attended our dyno day
on December 4th. These inquiring minds
learned a lot about their Porsches and
respective modifications. Our day was
sponsored by Trick Pro Motorsports on
Ellis Road in Melbourne. Proprietor TJ ran
eight Porsches through two pulls each on
the SuperFlow AutoDyn 30 chassis dyno.
Each run included air/fuel measurements
and computer reports for the horsepower
conscious participants.
The following table summarizes the results.
The horsepower measured on a chassis
dyno is the rear wheel horsepower. This is
usable horsepower after drivetrain losses.
The rule of thumb conversion for RWHP is
85% of engine HP typically specified by auto
manufacturers.
Everyone was impressed with the Steve
Wong produced 911Chips catalytic converter
delete tuner chip on Laing’s ’88 Carerra.
Subsequent research on the Internet shows
many recommendations for this straight
forward modification.
The APR Stage 1 ECU programming on
David O’Neal’s Cayman S showed its stuff
with 294 RWHP, a straight forward upgrade
performed at Porsche of Melbourne. David
was soon up-handed by Collin’s similar
Cayman S with Borla exhaust. Not only did
the Guards Red Porsche have a wonderful
howl, it produced just over 300 RWHP to
back it up.
Jonathan Parker had just returned home
from Italy the night before and spent his
morning hours putting the 911 back together.
A frequent visitor at Trick Pro, Jonathan was
anxious to test his recent attempts to flatten
out the torque curve. Rumor had it that wife
Ellen didn’t even know he was home yet.
A jet-lagged Jonathan Parker
anxious to see the results
TJ awarded Steve Hoffman a Trick Pro
commemorative t-shirt for the Porsche with
the most oomph. The beast’s 330 RWHP
comes complements of a Kokeln long neck
intercooler, K27 turbo, 1 bar boost spring,
Fabspeed exhaust and air intake. Just as we
were about to call it a day, up pulls Tom
Everett with Kevin and Rita Brackett’s 2007
GT3 RS. This RS has suspension setup for the
And the winner is . . .
track and a full suite of safety equipment, but
to date is running stock engine configuration.
Steve quickly hid the t-shirt in the 930. The
club members remaining were treated to
. . . Until this bad boy rolled in!
volume 5, Issue 1
414 RWHP at a screaming 8250 RPM. Rita
Brackett subsequently demanded her t-shirt
at our Holiday Banquet, willingly exchanging
her Porsche Design Collection Kaffee cups
door prize for the cloth.
Dyno day was both telling and fun. TJ’s
audience anticipated in silence during
each pull and shared views like engineers
with paper in hand. Experience the power
for yourself on the Trick Pro website at
