HSR Sebring Fall Classic

Because of my many trips this summer, I was experiencing withdrawal
symptoms from my lack of participation in club activities. The Historic
Sportscar Racing (HSR) event in Sebring provided the needed fix; a
nice drive with club members, lots of different cars to see, and a race
track. What more could you want?
Morning rendezvous

Steve Hoffman and Shelby Goode led the drive in Steve’s Red 1987
911 Turbo. We rendezvoused with David Kelley
and his 911 Turbo in Vero, and snaked our
way through the back roads of Central Florida
toward Sebring.
I was thankful to be tail gunner as Steve took
some roads with which I was not familiar. He
did a great job setting the pace and clearing the
road, even when a buzzard tried to race him to
some road kill in the middle of our lane. But
Steve did not “lift” and remained in complete
control of his car.
Upon arriving at Sebring, you could immediately
hear the unique sound of un-muffled race cars.
My heart rate quickened. The gate fee was very
reasonable, so I paid a little extra for paddock
parking and a touring lap.

We were able to mingle with the drivers and their teams as they
prepared their cars for a weekend of racing. Shelby personally knew
many of the people there, making introductions and allowing Steve to
start conversations about possible future joint club activities.
As an HSR event, there was quite an array of cars, but I was really
surprised at the number of spec Caymans and Cayman teams
represented. I am interested to see how this series develops.
At the lunch break, I was able to take my Cayman S on the track with
about a dozen other cars for some touring laps. It ended up being a
30 minute session that I thoroughly enjoyed. This was my first track
experience at Sebring and I am looking forward to going back for a
DE event there in the near future.
