President’s
Column
With 2011 well under way, a record-level of events are scheduled for the
first quarter. A full mix of tours, drives, social, and technical events are
on tap. Our busy calendar is attracting members regularly from nearby
regions and, thanks to your support, the accolades for the Space Coast
Region continue.
Escape Velocity Magazine serves as the standard bearer for this
region’s accomplishments. Our content comes from you, and we
all appreciate your contributions. The March 2011 edition of Classic
Motorsports Magazine features EV as its “Newsletter of the Month”.
CM observes, “It’s pretty. It’s well written, and it’s stocked with nice
photographs…Perhaps best of all, the newsletter isn’t hidden away. The
current issue plus past editions can be found on the group’s website,
spc.pca.org.”
Speaking of the website, a team of technical wizards are working on
updating the look and content of our website in preparation for the
PCA’s Website competition – a national award that we have yet to
achieve. The website serves as SPC’s central point for timely and
accurate event information; we encourage all members to access the
data contained on the site.
Similarly, SPC is going to become more reliant upon the PCA’s event
registration program for confirming attendance at upcoming events. An
upcoming article will illustrate the use of the register.pca.org website.
Acquiring a user name and password is an easy, one-time occurrence
that allows you to register for events in any PCA region. The new PCA
Zone 12 website, zone12.pca.org, provides a comprehensive event
calendar for the nine regions within our zone.
The SPC Board has been expanded significantly to better serve the
needs of our members. The Board wants to know what you’re thinking;
call or e-mail any one of us with questions, ideas, or concerns. Finally,
I wish to thank you for the opportunity to serve this great organization
and our Board for their continued support. Drive with Passion.
Roar Before the 24
Article by Steve Hoffman
Photos by Steve Hoffman and Blake Blakely
One of the many perks of living on the Space
Coast is that the world watches as we kickoff
each racing season with the Rolex 24 at
Daytona. The “Roar” is our opportunity to
get up close and personal with the teams,
sneak in an early look at this years’ cars, and
get out and enjoy the camaraderie that our
club offers.
A few members’ cars literally feet from the track
Fifteen members met up at Lowe’s in
Rockledge, completed our safety brief,
and headed north up I-95. After a quick
stop at Panera in Daytona to pick up a few
more members and get a quick caffeine fix,
we headed into the track. Another dozen
or so Space Coast members were already
on hand. As you get out of the car you are
quickly reminded of where this event got its’
name. The symphonic roar of racing engines
running at full throttle literally surround
you.
The excitement began immediately as the
track was full and only a few feet away
from our parking location. There was the
Brumos 911 GT3 Cup number 5 with Hurley
Haywood behind the wheel for one more
last race. The defending champion Action
Express Porsche DP’s now running two cars;
the 5 and the 9. And then we were surprised
to see the familiar Flying Lizards 45, but on
a Porsche DP car. Later we got a good look
at the BGB Motorsports’ Caymans who are
running in the Continental Tire Series.
We rushed to the fan zone and in to the
paddock for open access to the cars, the
volume 5, Issue 1
drivers, and the teams. They were all more
than willing to sign autographs, answer
questions about the cars, and accept well
wishes. It was a great event, blessed with
perfect weather, and enjoyed among good
friends. If you have never been to the Roar,
you are really missing out.
Christmas trees, holiday music, slinky
cocktail dresses, and racing art were all in
evidence at the Space Coast Region Holiday
Banquet and Annual Meeting held at Eau
Gallie Yacht Club. I stood in the corner (near
the bar), sipping my scotch and enjoying the
view. With a sold-out attendance of 128, talk
of Porsches filled the air, and there wasn’t a tshirt
in evidence, making this an event unlike
any other held by our club. Perhaps this is why
it was the best attended of all the 58 events
hosted by Space Coast Region in 2010.
Eau Gallie Commodore and Space Coast
member Donna Hahle was introduced and
offered a gracious welcome. We were also
joined by 5-time Le Mans winner Derek
Bell, who entertained us with anecdotes of
his career and introduced us to a fabulous
collection of original racing art on display and
for sale. Several members purchased some of
the art pieces of which 50% of proceeds from
the sale benefited the Hope for Tomorrow
charity.
Derek Bell recounts the
inspiration for displayed art
Officer’s reports followed a wonderful plated
dinner. Report highlights included that we
have money in the bank, more members than
we used to, and that our members continue
to participate in a seemingly ever-increasing
number and range of events—just what you’d
expect from the club named “Region of the
Year” by PCA. The nominating committee
report offered a slate of candidates that were
accepted by acclamation, there being no
other applicants or nominations from the
floor. Officers for 2011 are: David O’Neal,
growth and national awards for Escape
The business concluded, we moved on to
door prizes generously provided by several
David Kelly, Dan and Teri Cleary from the
901 Shop Tour
As announced at the Holiday Banquet in
December, this year we will be making a special
point to include events on our calendar that
cater towards the classic years of Porsche cars
and Porsche motorsports.
The first of these events was a tour of the 901
Shop in Stuart, Florida. A special thanks goes
out to my fellow Classic Co-Chair Shelby
Goode for setting up this visit. The 901 Shop is
a family effort that has been in the business of
racing and prepping Porsches for racing for over
35 years. Jack Refenning and his son Brady are
1970 914-6
both successful racers. In fact, Jack has had 20
starts at the Sebring 12 Hours and 14 at the 24
Hours of Daytona. It’s that wealth of experience
that the 901 Shop brings to its business and its
customers. They also continue to support the
cadre of privateer racers who look to the 901
Shop to prep, crew, and transport their cars to
historic races across the country.
When we arrived we were greeted by Jack, his
wife Jo-Ellen, and Brady who were willing and
eager to answer questions and provide us with
technical details. A row of vintage Porsche race
1975 RSR
cars were on display outside, and the doors to
the shop were open with the contents of the
meticulously prepared garage ready for our
inspection.
What a collection of cars! My personal favorites
were an original RUF Yellowbird, an “all”
original 1970 914-6 with only 14,000 miles, and,
the star of the assembly, a real 1975 Porsche
RSR. This RSR was one of the last built and one
volume 5, Issue 1
RUF Yellowbird
of the most original examples still in existence.
It is safe to say that everybody had a good time.
The hospitality of the staff at the 901 Shop was
great and we all agreed that this was a tour
we will definitely repeat in the future. After
we left the shop, we made a short hop over to
FINZ Waterfront Grille for a relaxing lunch
overlooking the waterfront. It was a perfect
venue to recount the day’s events and share a
good meal with friends.
Keeping the Tradition Alive
Article and Photos by Ralph Fritsche Part 2
Welcome back for Part 2 of Keeping the Tradition Alive. Last time,
I shared some pointers about how to acquire the right car. In this
segment, I’ll talk a bit about what to do with the car after it has been
found.
As you may recall, I decided on a 1984 Porsche 944. It’s likely that any
vehicle over 20 years old is going to need some maintenance work
no matter how well it was taken care of previously. Hopefully, a Pre-
Purchase Inspection (PPI) was performed and any potential issues
were factored into the purchase price.
My 944 was in great overall condition, but still needed a lot of
maintenance to bring out its full potential. The floor of my garage had
drips of every fluid except fuel. So it was off to the Porsche forums to
identify the problem areas and develop a plan of action. Although I was
completely new to automotive repair, I had decided when I acquired
the car to do as much of the work myself as possible. With the help
and encouragement of members on several forums, I managed to
complete the repairs and address all the leaks. I quickly learned that
most leaks were just the result of old seals and not necessarily the first
sign of a potentially fatal problem. Working on the car was actually
fun and no single job proved to be all that difficult.
After a few weeks, the car was running like new. Now my attention
turned to cosmetic issues, primarily the paint. Paint was one job I
chose not to tackle. So the big questions I had to answer next were
where to take the car and how much to spend. This started as an
inexpensive project and clearly I wanted to keep it that way.
A well masked car, one
of the keys to great paint
Fortunately, I had just spent the last several months visiting Sharpe’s
Body Shop with my good friend and fellow Space Coast member
Steve Hoffman, who was having his 1967 911S completely restored.
Sharpe’s did an amazing job with Steve’s car, and I was equally
impressed at the price he was quoted.
So, I arranged for Mark and Lisa Canada to take in the 944 and do
their best to make it look new. Mark’s staff has a lot of experience
working on Porsches. They took every dent out of the car (and there
were many!) prior to painting and even duplicated the stripes in paint
that I had applied with striping tape. The end result was beyond all
my expectations. The car was beautiful and the price was more than
fair. In California, a paint job of this quality would easily cost more
volume 5, Issue 1
Smooth as glass
with excellent reflection
than twice the value of what the car was worth. I can’t thank Mark
and Lisa enough.
The car is now both mechanically and cosmetically as good as new. At
least that’s how it seemed at first. Unfortunately, little issues with the
interior that hadn’t bothered me before have become more noticeable.
But I guess that will have to be the topic of another installment.
HSR Sebring Fall Classic
Article by Tom Kirk
Photos by Tom Kirk and Blake Blakely
Because of my many trips this summer, I was experiencing withdrawal
symptoms from my lack of participation in club activities. The Historic
Sportscar Racing (HSR) event in Sebring provided the needed fix; a
nice drive with club members, lots of different cars to see, and a race
track. What more could you want?
Morning rendezvous
before the drive to Sebring
Steve Hoffman and Shelby Goode led the drive in Steve’s Red 1987
911 Turbo. We rendezvoused with David Kelley
and his 911 Turbo in Vero, and snaked our
way through the back roads of Central Florida
toward Sebring.
I was thankful to be tail gunner as Steve took
some roads with which I was not familiar. He
did a great job setting the pace and clearing the
road, even when a buzzard tried to race him to
some road kill in the middle of our lane. But
Steve did not “lift” and remained in complete
control of his car.
Upon arriving at Sebring, you could immediately
hear the unique sound of un-muffled race cars.
My heart rate quickened. The gate fee was very
reasonable, so I paid a little extra for paddock
parking and a touring lap.
10 volume 5, Issue 1
We were able to mingle with the drivers and their teams as they
prepared their cars for a weekend of racing. Shelby personally knew
many of the people there, making introductions and allowing Steve to
As an HSR event, there was quite an array of cars, but I was really
surprised at the number of spec Caymans and Cayman teams
represented. I am interested to see how this series develops.
At the lunch break, I was able to take my Cayman S on the track with
about a dozen other cars for some touring laps. It ended up being a
30 minute session that I thoroughly enjoyed. This was my first track
experience at Sebring and I am looking forward to going back for a
DE event there in the near future.
After lunch we enjoyed observing the Porsches, Jags, Lotuses,
Corvettes, Mustangs, and even vintage NASCARs make their way
around the track.
The day was more about test and tune, with a little qualifying at the
end of the day, rather than about actual racing. But we were there
primarily to look at the cars and meet the people behind them, and
were not disappointed.
2010 Best FEST Article
The 2010 Fall Porsche FEST trip to Germany
and the former Eastern Bloc nations was
clearly the best FEST ever! Dianne Zorn
(a good neighbor friend) and I went on the
2009 Fall Porsche FEST and greatly enjoyed
driving a Porsche Panamera on the Autobahn
and through Italy and the Swiss Alps. This
year’s FEST had the same exhilarating driving
experiences (again in a Panamera) coupled
with visits to some of Europe’s most storied
cities. This was Peter Sontag and his Fast Lane
Travel team’s 35th Anniversary of Treffens
and FESTs to Europe. They clearly have
perfected this exciting vacation experience
for Porsche enthusiasts. Every aspect of this
year’s FEST exceeded our expectations. And
the FEST had a broad range of activities and
breathtaking events that one could never
have planned for or experienced as a private
His driving expertise and customer friendly
The Fast Lane to Where It All Began
Article by Ron McCall
Photos by Ron and Libby McCall
Last spring, I received an e-mail from the Porsche Club of America
announcing that Peter Sontag’s Fast Lane Travel Fall TREFFEN would
include a visit to Gmünd, Austria, which all Porschephiles know is
where it all began – the birthplace of Porsche. From 1948 to 1950, a
total of 44 Coupes and eight Cabriolets were built at an old sawmill in
Gmund, as well as the most famous Porsche of them all, Type 356 Nr.
1, which is now in the new Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
Being a recently converted Porschephile, I knew that I had to be one
of the chosen few to visit the birthplace of Porsche. I mentioned
to Peter that, if possible, it would be nice to see the Porsche family
estate in Zell am See enroute to Gmünd. Peter said that there wasn’t
time given our tight schedule. It is just that I had read about it in
Christophorus Magazine, and if by chance we passed by it, Peter
could simply point it out. Well, in the typical Sontag fashion, my
wish was his command. Not only did we stop at the residence, but
Peter called ahead and Wolfgang Porsche (Ferry‘s son) came out to
greet us. What a treat that was!
The author with Wolfgang Porsche
in Zell Am See
As every Porschephile knows, Gmünd is where Ferdinand and Ferry
Porsche moved during World War II to escape the allied bombing
of Stuttgart. The only thing remaining from the old sawmill is the
original gatehouse and Ferry Porsche’s conference room and office.
The caretaker and owner of the property is Helmut Pfeifhofer. In
1982, Mr. Pfeifhofer founded the first and only private Porsche
museum in Europe, which is just down the road from the old sawmill.
The museum has some rare and original Porsches and photographs of
the early days. But the real gem is the gatehouse and Ferry Porsche’s
office. The buildings are not open to the public except by special
arrangement with Mr. Pfeifhofer, which of course Peter took care of.
We had a personal tour of the buildings narrated by Mr. Pfeifhofer in
German and translated by Peter, who is a native Austrian and thus,
fluent in German.
On the Grossglockner High Alpine Road enroute to Gmünd
While seeing the original site was worth the price of the trip, the Fast
Lane journey to Gmünd was right up there as well. There were two
groups for a total of twelve Porsches nose-to-tail at over 150 MPH on
the Autobahn, and traversing the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.
The High Alpine Road takes you over the Grossglockner, the highest
mountain in Austria at 12,460 feet. The road is 30 miles long with 36
hairpin turns and an altitude ascent of 8,215 feet. The road was built
between 1930 and 1935 and was used by Ferry Porsche to test the
newly constructed Gmünd 356s.
Rest stop on the top of the Grossglockner pass
with all 11 Porsches lined up and ready to go
I can’t speak for Ferry Porsche, but it sure was a lot of fun for me in a
911S when our lead driver Thomas Höferlin exclaimed over the radio
“eagles let’s fly” - and fly we did - up and down the mountain and
around all 36 of those hairpin turns. Be cautioned, this trip is not for
the faint of heart, but it is a piece of cake for a Porsche. This is what
these cars were designed to do. This is home field for the Porsche
and Fast Lane Travel. It was truly a special and once-in-a-lifetime
experience for my wife and me. More information can be found at
The Dyno Day Dish
Article and Photos by Tom Gorsuch
Fifteen members attended our dyno day
on December 4th. These inquiring minds
learned a lot about their Porsches and
respective modifications. Our day was
sponsored by Trick Pro Motorsports on
Ellis Road in Melbourne. Proprietor TJ ran
eight Porsches through two pulls each on
the SuperFlow AutoDyn 30 chassis dyno.
Each run included air/fuel measurements
and computer reports for the horsepower
conscious participants.
The following table summarizes the results.
The horsepower measured on a chassis
dyno is the rear wheel horsepower. This is
usable horsepower after drivetrain losses.
The rule of thumb conversion for RWHP is
85% of engine HP typically specified by auto
manufacturers.
Everyone was impressed with the Steve
Wong produced 911Chips catalytic converter
Subsequent research on the Internet shows
many recommendations for this straight
forward modification.
The APR Stage 1 ECU programming on
David O’Neal’s Cayman S showed its stuff
with 294 RWHP, a straight forward upgrade
performed at Porsche of Melbourne. David
was soon up-handed by Collin’s similar
Cayman S with Borla exhaust. Not only did
the Guards Red Porsche have a wonderful
howl, it produced just over 300 RWHP to
back it up.
Jonathan Parker had just returned home
from Italy the night before and spent his
morning hours putting the 911 back together.
A frequent visitor at Trick Pro, Jonathan was
anxious to test his recent attempts to flatten
out the torque curve. Rumor had it that wife
Ellen didn’t even know he was home yet.
Dyno day was both telling and fun. TJ’s
The Legends of Motorsports
Article by David Kelly
Photos by Blake Blakely
The “Legends of Motorsports” event was held at Sebring Raceway
December 3 – 5, and what an event it was! It certainly lived up to its
name in every respect.
It was the season finale of the Legends of Motorsports Racing Series,
hosted by the famous Indy Car racing legend Bobby Rahal and his
Rahal Racing Team. Bobby is an avid race car collector and a historic
race car driver himself. He had his stable of vintage race cars there
to participate in the race activities. Brian Redman was the Grand
Marshal for the event and drove a 1970 Chevron B16 during the
weekend race schedule. Bobby Rahal drove a 1969 Brabham BT29 to
victory in his feature race event on Sunday.
Bobby Rahal in his Lola T290 at Sebring
There were 126 race entries in all, including almost every Porsche;
from 356’s to 911 RSR’s to the legendary Porsche 962’s (five of them),
and of course, the yellow Le Mans Prototype Porsche RS Spyder. There
was an equally large number of Chevrons, Lolas, Jaguars, McLarens,
and Lotus race cars, with Jaguar being the featured marquee for the
event. There were also a number Ferraris, Alfas, Corvettes, Mustangs,
and other unique one-off race cars as well.
Through the efforts of Zone 12 Representative Jennifer Barrows and
PCA, we were afforded a dedicated Porsche Corral for our members
who chose to purchase the three day all-inclusive corral pass. And
what a bargain it was, with the full three day admission included,
along with dedicated track touring sessions specifically for those with
the car corral passes.
1974 Kremer Built 3.0L 911 RSR of Robert Newman, Jr.
Most of us have done “touring laps” at various Sebring and Daytona
events, but none of them came close to matching the pure excitement
of these special lap sessions led by the new super-charged 510 HP
Jaguar XK-R. It was 30 minutes of pure fun and adrenaline around
the 3.7 mile, 17 turn racing circuit.
There were many opportunities throughout the event to take
photographs, talk to the drivers and racing teams, and wander freely
around the paddock enjoying the race experience. Bobby Rahal,
Brian Redman, Doc Bundy, and others were available and accessible
for photos and autographs as the opportunity arose, or at dedicated
fan sessions during the meet. It was fun saying hello to Bobby as he
was uncovering his beautifully restored black XKE-Jaguar roadster.
He seemed to be an easy-going regular guy, and just another car
enthusiast like the rest of us.
We had about 20 Porsches of all models parked in the Porsche Corral
on Saturday, with more sprinkled among the regular spectator
parking. Just about everything was represented, from two recent
GT3RS’s, to a 356 Speedster.
PCA members came from our own Space Coast Region, the Gold
Coast Region, the Suncoast Region, the Citrus Region, and from
many more regions across the country. Everyone was there to have a
great time and to see their favorite race cars in action on the historic
track.
at Sebring
Porsche’s own Le Mans Prototype RS Spyder
was the fastest car during practice and
qualifying, however, Sunday’s feature race
for the class was won by the Audi R8 LMP
car. This was another heavily contested race
between the very famous Le Mans prototypes
with a significant number of LMP cars
participating.
Still, it was an event which had something
for everyone; with new technology mixed
with old technology, and legendary cars
and drivers everywhere you looked. In
many ways, it was an immersion experience
in everything racing, yet it was a relaxed
adventure in racing history and racing
legend.
Spring is almost here! Spring marks the
return of Porsche of Melbourne’s Annual
Tech Session and Open House. Spring also
signals a new driving events season for all
you track fanatics! This edition will be a
teaser for what we have planned at this year’s
Tech Session on March 5th.
Traditionally, we have displayed current
model cars and answered questions about
them. Last year we changed it up a little bit
by asking some of our event drivers to display
their “track weapons” of choice. We then had
a question and answer session not only for
our technicians, but with some of our local
drivers as well.
This year we plan on starting with a diagnostic
session on a later model vehicle. We hope
to take some of the “magic” out of what we
do to ascertain the cause of a malfunction.
We will have a live demonstration of the
capabilities of our current generation of
PIWIS testers. PIWIS stands for Porsche
Integrated Workshop Information System.
These testers have access to more than just
diagnostics via the OBD-2 connector. They
can also display wiring diagrams, workshop
manuals, and technical information bulletins.
Beyond these abilities, they are full function
oscilloscopes as well.
We will “bug” a vehicle with several different
faults, and show the capabilities of the tester
in helping to find the cause. We will also
show the limitations of the tester. That is,
the tester is a tool; it does not tell us what to
replace. Sometimes it just shows us where to
look. Speaking of knowing where to look, we
can take a peek into some of the information
stored in the various control units and what
it means.
Once we have fixed our demonstration
vehicle we will move on to the driving
events information session. We will again
cover modifications available for improving
your track day experience. This will include
performance tweaks, safety recommendations,
and maintenance suggestions:
you to see and ask questions. We will also
discuss other items you need to stay safe,
2011 Porsche Parade Primer
A Planning Guide for the 56th Annual Porsche Parade in Savannah
Article by Ron McCall
Photos by David Wilks, RaceShotsResource.com
It’s time to start planning for the 2011 Porsche Parade which is being
held in Savannah, Georgia, July 31st through August 6th. Parade is
PCA’s annual convention and the largest gathering of Porsche owners
in the world. A week-long event may seem like plenty of time for
everything, but there is more to do than one can fit into that actionpacked
period. You will have to be ready to make some choices
when on-line registration opens on March 8th. To help complete
the registration process smoothly, download the schedule from
http://parade2011.pca.org/.
2 volume 5, Issue 1
The Welcome Party, Banquets and Hospitality Area
These events are absolute musts where you have the opportunity to
meet other Parade attendees and Porsche dignitaries. You’ll soon
appreciate the motto “it’s not about the cars, it’s about the people.”
Driving Tours
Several interesting destinations are selected for on-your-own driving
tours. Travel at your own pace and see the area. Last year, one of the
tours was to Road America and included a lap of the track. Check the
details listed for each tour before you register.
Volunteering
A multitude of volunteer opportunities exist, and it is the very best
way to get involved and experience Parade. Last year, Libby and I
volunteered for the Michelin Drive and Compare and the Autocross.
We not only got to watch others go through the Michelin Drive and
Compare, but we had the opportunity to do it ourselves when the
crowds thinned out. A must do.
Concours d’ Elegance
Okay, this event is for the serious Q-tippers out there. Professionally
restored and prepared vehicles reside mostly in the Restoration and
Preservation Groups. For the rest of us with newer vehicles, the
Preparation Group has separate classes for Full and Touring (where
undercarriage is not judged). Plan on arriving early
when the Concours prep areas will be open.
Time Speed Distance Rally
During a TSD Rally, competitors travel a prescribed
rally route through a series of checkpoints at a
set speed. The TSD Rally is for serious-minded
competitors; I’m talking on-board Space Shuttle
computer here. We entered this last year, but did not
realize that because our Cayenne had navigation,
we were automatically in the Navigational class. We
also found out that TSD really stands for “Toward a
Speedy Divorce.” So, we were a “Did Not Start” (or
Did Not Split-Up). If you are going to give this a
try, plan on attending the Rally School.
Michelin Drive and Compare
In Chicago, two new Porsche Boxster Spyders
were fitted with different tires from Michelin, and
participants got to test drive them on an abbreviated
autocross course. This activity is scheduled
throughout the day over a two-day period, so you
can fit this in between other events.
Autocross
This fun event is spread over two days so that there
are more runs available for each participant. Even
if you don’t enter this event, plan on volunteering.
You will have a great time, learn why certain drivers
do better than others, and possibly find out why
914’s are so fast. If you are an autocrosser, you have
to sign up for this.
Gimmick Rally
Libby and I entered this last year and brought in some outside help:
Wesley Ledesma, Ruben (PCA’s National Vice President) and Janet’s
son. Even with Wesley’s sharp eyes and energy, we still finished 15th
out of 19 in our class. We are planning on doing better this year,
although additional passengers are not permitted in 2011. Definitely
put this on your schedule.
Technical and Historic Quiz
We entered this last year and both won our respective divisions.
Of course, we want to do better this year so we are studying up on
Porsche history.
Tech Academy
This is not a competitive event and there
are no tests to take to get your degree in
Porscheology. The Academy is informative
and educational; I learned about the issues
with our first generation Cayenne. Check
out the list of courses and sign up, if you can
fit it in.
5K Run/Walk
Being avid runners, we had to do this.
Besides, after all of the banquets earlier in
the week, we needed to do this. As with all
of the Parade events, there was some serious
competition, but we both still managed to
finish high enough to get a ribbon.
Goodie Store
The Goodie store offers a full selection of
apparel, parade logo merchandise and other
limited-edition items. Volunteer and you
will be rewarded with lots of Goodie Store
stuff at the end of the week.
Children’s Programming
Parade hosts a series of activities for children
and young adults.
Art Exhibition
Parade includes a display of photography,
paintings and crafts that are Porsche-related.
The entries are judged and awards given.
Parade Competition Rules
If you are considering any of the competitive
events, this is something I would encourage
you to order when you register. It is really
a “must have” and they are typically not
available for purchase at Parade.
volume 5, Issue 1
Okay, that’s it in a nut shell. Please e-mail me with any questions
(rmccall6@cfl.rr.com), and as more information becomes available, I
will pass it along. In the next issue of EV, I will take you through the
check-in process once you arrive at Parade.
Weather Hampers First
2011 Space Coast Drive Escape
By Andre Martineau
On Tuesday, January 25, Space Coast Region
kicked-off the first Drive & Dine for the year.
Unfortunately, the weather caused fourteen
members (seven cars) to cancel, but thirteen
die-hards attended.
Once again, Porsche camaraderie prevailed
at Captain Hiram’s in Sebastian. Members
shared some wonderful track attendance
stories, while others enjoyed the good food
and service. We all had a great time until the
forecasted weather signaled it was time to go.
Although the initial squall line was severe, it
was short lived and everyone made it safely
home.
As a result of many conversations with
members, the original concept of Drive
& Dine will change. Rather than week
nights, these events will now be held during
weekend daylight hours. This will allow us
to enjoy some of Florida’s best sight-seeing
while driving to select restaurants for either
brunch or lunch.
If you have any suggestions for venues, please
Idle Time
Article and Photos by Ken Marshall
What do you do during winter’s Autocross
(AX) and Driver Education (DE) downtime
period? Modify your Porsche, of course!
Mike Steele preparing to install the roll bar
Having been bitten by the PCA sponsored
DE and AX bug, I thought it would be a
good time to get ready for the new season.
With safety in mind, I chose a GMG RSR
roll bar. Installation is a bit of a job and not
something that I would have attempted on
my own.
I also purchased GMG’s new one piece,
forged aluminum wheels in order to have
a set of rubber for dedicated track use.
However, I love the looks of the new wheels
so much that I’ll be using them for the street
in conjunction with
Michelin PS2s. The
OEM wheels with
Michelin Cup tires
will see track and AX
duty.
After searching for
a place to get the
roll bar installed,
I turned to my
friends at Porsche of
Melbourne’s service
Anybody seen my wheels?
volume 5, Issue 1
Ready for next season’s action
department. I can’t say enough about the
professional installation job performed by
POM technicians Mike Steele and Jesse Lim.
The bar looks like it was factory installed, and
our PCA discount is an added bonus. Not
only does the bar provide a significant safety
factor, I’ve been assured that the guards red
finish will be certain to improve my times.
We’ll see.
I was more than pleased at the car’s
transformation when I picked it up at the
end of the day. It’s nice to have quality local
support. Thanks Porsche of Melbourne.
I have a feeling I’ll be back.
Revive the Passion
Article by Ron McCall
Photos courtesy of Paul Gregor, Porsche AG, Club Coordination
By the time you read this, the latest raffle from Porsche Club of
America (PCA) will be concluded, and maybe you are already a
winner of a new 911 GTS. If I won, you would certainly have heard
by now. But, the raffle I am especially interested in is for a 1973 911T,
currently being restored to its original factory new condition.
For those Space Coasters who did not make it to Parade last
year, this 1973 911T, or at least the shell, was prominently on
display in the Hospitality Suite at the Pheasant Run Resort.
At first glance it appeared someone was playing a joke on the
assembled Porschephiles. Here was this old chassis, which
sort of looked like a 911T with a duck tail spoiler and wide
flared rear. What was this monstrosity?
After several inquiries, I learned it was actually a project car
purchased on eBay by PCA, and was going to be restored by
Porsche AG to its original factory new condition. And, it
could be mine if I won the raffle. Well, I have to say I was
impressed. What a splendid and novel idea and kudos to PCA
and Porsche Classic.
At Parade, I had the opportunity to discuss the restoration with
Jochen Bader who is the manager of the Classic Workshop,
28 volume 5, Issue 1
Porsche’s restoration facility. I knew I was going to be heading
to Stuttgart in September and made sure I got Jochen’s contact
information. Once my travel plans were set, I contacted Jochen and
Paul Gregor in Zuffenhausen. They were most accommodating and
Jochen Bader, Manager Classic Workshop, with the project car upon its arrival in Germany
approved my request to visit the Classic Workshop, which is
currently located in Freiberg/Neckar, about 10 miles from the main
Zuffenhausen plant.
The “Revive the Passion” crew reviewing the status of the project in November 2010 (Left to Right - Barbara
Bockenhoff, Sales and Planning Porsche Classic and Coordinator of Revive the Passion project; Jochen
Bader, Manager Classic Workshop; Paul Gregor, Porsche AG, Club Coordination; and Alexander Fabig,
Manager Porsche Classic)
volume 5, Issue 1
On September 24, 2010, my wife Libby and I, along with Paul Gregor
and Phil Doty (PCA Region Procedures Manual Editor) had the
unique opportunity to tour the facility and see the project car up
close and personal. The Classic Workshop is in a
non-descript building, but inside it is anything but.
The facility is so pristine that you could eat off the
floor. There is literally no problem Jochen and his
staff cannot solve. With the original drawings and
templates, they can make anything they don’t have
in stock.
When we saw the project car, it had been
dismantled and stripped, and looked more like a
911T, albeit without an engine and transmission.
The cost of such a restoration, even with shipping,
is very reasonable, but more importantly, there is
not another way to get a factory new 1973 911T
delivered to your door almost 40 years after it was
originally in the dealer’s showroom.
You can check out the progress of the restoration and
get more information about the Classic Workshop
at http://www.porsche.com/. In the meantime, set
aside some money to take a few chances on winning
a truly unique 911T at this year’s Parade.
Q & A with Ron and Libby McCall
EscapeVelocity asks our members
EV : What should we know about the
McCall family?
A. We are originally from the Washington,
D.C. area. We moved to Florida in 2005,
after I retired from the Federal government.
Libby is a Flight Attendant for American
Airlines and flies to Europe once a week. I
know it is a tough job, but somebody has to
do it! We have both had a life-long interest
in sports cars. I have owned several MGBs
which I autocrossed, and Libby had a MG
Midget when we first met. We have been
members of PCA since 2008 and have really
enjoyed the various activities PCA and Space
Coast Region offer. We attended our first
Parade in 2010 and hope to become more
involved in PCA and Space Coast Region
events in the future.
EV : What was your first Porsche?
A. Our first Porsche was a 2007 Cayman S,
which we purchased in 2008. We currently
have a 2010 911 S and a 2006 Cayenne S.
EV : Which car is your favorite?
A. That’s a tough one. While the 911 S is my
dream car, I do enjoy driving the Cayenne S.
I have always loved SUV’s, and the Cayenne
is by far the best SUV I have owned or driven.
Libby’s favorite is the Panamera, which she
recently drove when we had it as a service
loaner from Porsche of Melbourne. (I hope
Horst doesn’t see this).
EV : Besides Porsches, what activities
do the McCalls enjoy?
A. We are avid runners and
occasional golfers, and we enjoy
sports car racing and traveling.
Last fall we went on a Treffen
with Fast Lane Travel and had
the opportunity to tour the
Porsche factory in Stuttgart, and
to visit Gmund, the birthplace of
Porsche. It was truly a once-ina-lifetime
experience.
EV : Do you have any
Porsche stories to share?
A. The year was 1969. I was
getting out of the Air Force and in
the market for a sports car. I was
volume 5, Issue 1
The McCalls and their 911 S
particularly interested in the new Porsche
914, which came out as a 1970 model year.
All of my sports car friends talked me out
of it, saying it was just a VW with a Porsche
logo. Unfortunately, I listened to them and
ended up buying a MGB. So much for my
foresight!
