Inventors are granted rights to their inventions
through applying for a patent. In legal terms, the
invention can’t be made, sold, or utilized by
others if the inventor chooses not to give them
permission. Other than this, it is also a way of
encouraging the creation of more innovations
that can greatly contribute to society.

Related to the aforementioned statement, it is
also the uniqueness and usefulness that makes
an item patentable. Another way to put it is it
must be “novel” and “non-obvious”. Once
qualified, the items can then be categorized into
the three kinds of patents: utility patents, design
patents, and plant patents. Some patentable
items include but are not limited to: drugs,
furniture design, computer software and
hardware, and chemical formulas and processes.
Patenting is yet another way of giving credit
where it is due—in this case, for inventors. While
complicated, it is best for inventors to know their
rights and gain the benefits that come with it.
After all, if it weren’t for them, society would not
have progressed as much as it has now.
