Creates Bright, Airy Kitchen in Rural Home

When Cindy and her husband Richard 

downsized from their house in-town to a 

rural bungalow, they adjusted to country 

living quite naturally. What they didn’t like, however, 

was their small, dark kitchen. 

“We wanted to brighten up the space,” says Cindy. 

“We loved the rugged setting so much that we were 

inspired to have the windows as a focal point to bring 

the outdoors in.” 

Designer Beverly Wellington walked Cindy through the 

Cabinetree process and they got to work. 

“We kept within a similar footprint, but changed things 

up to greater improve the flow,” says Beverly. “The new 

kitchen is truly night and day from its predecessor.” 

“Beverly was amazing to work with – she knew exactly 

the look we were after,” says Cindy. “She brought all of 

our wish list to life.” 

The previous island was outdated and angled, with 

room for stools. Because the dining area is adjacent 

to the kitchen, seating was eliminated in favour of 

additional storage. The new rectangular island now 

makes a more prominent feature in the centre of the 

space. 

“I like that the island has storage in the front and 

back,” says Cindy. “Beverly suggested the recycling and 

garbage pull-outs, which I find really handy when I’m 

preparing dinner.” 

Cindy chose a classic MDF Shaker door in two painted 

finishes. Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace was selected 

for the perimeter colour, with Benjamin Moore’s Mount 

Saint Anne as the island accent. The fresh colour 

palette truly breathes life into the space. 

The kitchen boasts many Cabinetree favourite touches 

such as the spice and oil pull-out to the left of the 

stove, making it convenient for cooking. 

“The new floor-to-ceiling pantry holds so much and its 

trays roll out so smoothly that I can see exactly what 

dry goods I have to keep me organized,” says Cindy. 

“I also love the Wari corner pull-out accessory, which 

makes it easy to access pots and pans.”

The kitchen now has a renewed, modern look with 

simple yet impactful details, and takes advantage of the 

natural light. 

“We’re so thrilled with the end result – the space is so 

comfortable and airy now, with so much more storage 

space,” says Cindy. “This is now our favourite spot in 

the house.” 

“This refreshed space definitely complements the 

adjoining main floor area now, it looks as if it’s always 

been there,” says Beverly. 

Beverly Wellington takes great pride when helping 

Cabinetree clients with the design of their new spaces. 

“I work with clients to uncover exactly what they need 

from their space to make it the best possible layout 

to fit their home and lifestyle. While the selections 

process may be relatively similar client-to-client, there 

are always variables which make every project unique. 

It’s my job to uncover these details to truly tailor each 

space to the individual. It’s only near the end, once 

we’ve solidified a solid working layout, that I direct 

my clients to consider the finishing touches, such as 

colour, hardware selection, and countertops,” says 

Beverly. 

Prior to beginning work, Cabinetree takes detailed 

laser measurements, so they can design a layout and 

build cabinets to fit your space. With skilled designers 

on staff, they are able to create designs that appeal to 

everyone and fit any budget. 

Their showroom, located at 600 Neal Drive, offers

Lori and Rob had purchased Lori’s sister’s rental 

cottage on Gull Lake and were planning to 

renovate it, but soon realized that a renovation 

would never provide them with their dream home, and 

the property was perfect for a walkout lower level. 

“We looked at several different builders and when 

we met Kirk Figueira of Discovery Dream Homes, we 

clicked right away and knew they were the company 

for us,” says Rob. 

Rob and Lori put together their wish list, and Lori 

worked closely with designer Nicole Sokol at Discovery 

to design their custom home. After a few tweaks, the 

plans were ready to go. 

“The couple wanted Douglas fir timber post and beams 

to feature prominently inside and out,” says Kirk 

Figueira, Design and Consulting Associate. “A custom 

masonry stone fireplace extends from the lower level 

to the main floor level through the roof, featuring 

wood burning on opposite sides of the great room and 

Muskoka room.” With all Discovery projects, the client 

can use Discovery certified builders, or can arrange 

for their own contractor. In this case, Rob and Lori 

already had builder Troy Binnie secured to build their 

home. Their new 9,000 sq. ft. cottage is on three levels, 

including a garage. The walkout lower level provides 

a bedroom, bar, family room, sauna, gym, storage 

room, and water filtration system. On the main level is 

the great room with vaulted ceilings, two bedrooms, 

kitchen and dining area. Upstairs is the primary 

bedroom suite with its “Juliet” balcony. 

“We’re so happy with the two screened-in porches, 

one of which opens off the great room through 18 ft. 

telescopic doors so that we can enjoy the feeling of 

being outside,” says Rob. 

Discovery is known for its energy-efficient homes 

and this home is no exception. The structure has 

high-efficiency propane forced air heating and air 

conditioning, with in-floor radiant heating in the 

basement and garage. Spray foam insulation in the 

walls makes for a well-sealed, air tight four-season 

home. 

“We’re having so many nice family times at our 

new cottage. The whole building process was such 

a pleasurable experience,” says Rob. “Kirk and the 

Discovery team were always there to answer any 

questions we had.”

“This is one of the best homes I’ve had the pleasure

home that it’s being featured on road signs, in print 

and on-line advertising, and will be submitted for 

awards at the Ontario Home Builders’ Association and

they are the go-to professionals for large-scale land 

development projects, structure demolition, site 

excavation and shoreline stabilization. They maintain a 

modern fleet with over 85 dump trucks and 175 pieces 

of heavy machinery on worksites all over the Kawarthas. 

The company was founded by brothers Darrell 

and John Drain who built roads and septic beds in 

Kawartha cottage country. Armed with a single-axle 

dump truck, a rubber tire loader and a small bulldozer, 

the company became known for their expert service 

and affordable pricing. With the addition of their first 

quarry in 1973, they began to expand their services 

to include civil construction projects. Their first large 

assignment was Beavermead Park and Campground in 

Peterborough. 

The Drain Bros. business has grown to include over 20 

gravel pits and quarries, a state-of-the-art asphalt plant 

and a trap-rock processing plant. 

They’ve built a team of close to 400 employees, many 

of whom have been with Drain Bros. over the decades. 

Their long-time employees include Marie Little who 

started out with the company by weighing trucks on

manager. Danny Payne started his career as a truck 

driver and today he is a project manager overseeing 

several projects as well as equipment and labour 

allocations. Don Garden started out as a driver and is 

now the dispatcher for the company’s fleet of trucks.

...achieves coastal feel with a “south beach” twist 


Harry and Lynne have been refreshing their 

twenty-year old cottage on Clear Lake in 

stages, changing it to reflect the needs 

of their growing family, which now includes four 

grandchildren. 

“We started with the kitchen and dining room, then 

moved on to the living room and master bedroom,” 

says Lynne. “We wanted a coastal feel with a ‘South 

Beach’ twist to reflect our style. We’d worked with 

Angela Jones before on many projects and knew she 

was the best person to bring our vision to life.” 

“Harry and Lynne have a beautiful home and they felt 

it was time to do a makeover, to move away from the 

dark colours and pine wood, and remove the heavy 

carpet, to give the home a re-fresh, with new furniture 

and a new colour palette,” says Angela Jones, owner of 

Lakeshore Designs. 

For the colour palette, Angela took inspiration from the 

turquoise appliances in the kitchen and the colourful 

silk drapes in the living room. To brighten up the main 

floor she arranged for shiplap on the walls and for 

the ceiling to be painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Simply 

White” tone. 

In the master bedroom, Angela had Hunter Douglas 

power blinds installed which can be opened while 

lying in bed, for a restful start to the day. The colour of 

the chaise lounge reflects that of the lake which can be 

viewed out the window, while the white-on-white wall 

batten adds character to the serene room. 

“Angela and I work well together – we’re on the same 

wavelength. You might say we’re ‘sympatico’,” says 

Lynne. 

“We blended Harry and Lynne’s artwork into the décor 

and along with the new furniture, brought a new 

freshness to their home,” says Angela. “I’m so happy 

with how it all turned out.” 

“Now when I walk in to our home, I feel very calm,” 

says Lynne. “It’s a nice family retreat. The bedroom 

is especially tranquil and restful. Now we’re looking 

forward to having our lower level walk-out re-done, 

also by Lakeshore Designs.”

Creating a Conservation Legacy 

in the Kawarthas: For Today & Forever 

In the past two years, Kawartha Land Trust (KLT), a 

land conservation charity based in the Kawarthas, 

has secured 10 new properties, bringing the 

total number of properties under its protection and 

stewardship to 27. 

Properties acquired in 

2020 and 2021 include the 

Christie Bentham Wetland, 

McWilliams Property, 

Keppler Nature Sanctuary, 

van Nostrand Property, 

Jones Woodlot, Nogies 

Creek Property, Balsam Lake 

Property, Ballyduff Trails, 

Morton Nature Sanctuary, 

and the remaining two 

parcels of land on Big 

(Boyd/Chiminis) Island (the 

majority of the island was 

donated to KLT in 2015). 

“We’ve had two years of 

remarkable conservation 

outcomes for Kawartha Land 

Trust,” said John Kintare, 

KLT’s Executive Director. 

“The commitment of our 

supporters and donors 

has been fundamental in 

ensuring that more natural 

spaces in the Kawarthas will 

be protected for current and 

future generations.” 

Founded in 2001, KLT has 

27 properties that protect more than 4,800 acres of 

ecologically diverse lands, some of which include hiking 

trails accessed by thousands of visitors who live in or 

visit the Kawarthas every year. 

While land securement is an integral part of every land 

conservation organization, the work does not stop 

there. KLT’s dedicated land stewardship team works 

throughout the year to plan and implement strategies 

to ensure the land entrusted to the organization is 

maintained and, where necessary, restored.

In the past year alone, KLT staff and volunteers 

planted 1,600 White Pine trees at John Earle Chase 

Memorial Park and 1,000 mixed trees and shrubs, 

including Sugar Maples, 

Tamarack, and Ironwood, 

at Ballyduff Trails and the 

McKim-Garsonnin Property. 

They also organized a 

garbage clean-up day on 

Big (Boyd/Chiminis) Island 

and conducted species at 

risk monitoring, removed 

invasive plant species, and 

restored critical habitats 

at several properties. 

Preparations are already 

underway for additional 

tree planting at Ballyduff 

Trails and Dance Nature 

Sanctuary this year. 

“Land is the answer to 

many of the issues we 

face today, including 

biodiversity loss and climate 

change,” says Thomas 

Unrau, KLT’s Director of 

Community Conservation. 

“Our conservation efforts 

protect wetlands against 

development and provide critical habitat for species 

at risk like Blanding’s turtles. Our land management 

increases the carbon storage potential of our 

properties. Our work ensures that the Kawarthas 

sustains thriving ecosystems for years to come.”

What does a satellite orbiting almost 800 

kilometers from Earth have to do with the 

food on our plate? The Space to Spoon 

exhibition demonstrates how space technology 

benefits Canadian farmers and sustainable agriculture. 

It also highlights the Canadian Space Agency’s Earth 

observation satellite, RADARSAT-2, and its cutting-edge 

successor, RADARSAT Constellation. 

Visitors of all ages can enjoy a stimulating experience 

with hands-on models, interactive elements, and 

stunning graphics. 

Jeremy Hansen – an astronaut with the Canadian Space 

Agency – encourages Canadians to come see the Space 

to Spoon exhibition, “As an astronaut who grew up on 

a farm in southern Ontario, this is a topic that really 

interests me,” he states. “Satellites like RADARSAT-2 

have made Canada a world leader in Earth observation, 

which includes agricultural land. It’s hard to imagine 

that space technologies have an impact on what we 

eat, isn’t it? That’s what the Space to Spoon exhibit is 

all about. It was developed by the Canada Agriculture 

and Food Museum and the Canadian Space Agency. 

Visitors will learn how satellite data helps Canadian 

farmers monitor their crops and determine the 

condition of their land. Radar data allows farmers 

to better manage their resources, like water and 

fertilizer, and engage in agricultural practices that are 

sustainable and environmentally responsible.” 

“Canada is a world leader in satellite technology. 

This exhibition provides Canadians with a concrete 

example of the potential of technological innovations 

to improve their daily lives. The contribution to these 

innovations to competitiveness in critical sectors of 

our economy, such as agriculture and sustainable 

development, is undeniable” states the Honourable 

Navdeep Bains, former Minister of Innovation, Science 

and Economic Development. 

RADARSAT-2 is one of the world’s most advanced 

commercially available Earth observation radar 

image providers and offers users around the world 

an expanded range of high-quality data products 

to hundreds of applications. It has traveled over 

2.5 billion kilometers since it’s launch in 2007. The 

RADARSAT Constellation Mission was the next 

development in this technology. With a three-satellite 

configuration, it can provide complete coverage of 

Canada, flying over the High Arctic up to four times a 

day, and providing access to 90% of the world’s surface 

area!

Boating Season Ever 


“As a result of the pandemic, more people are buying 

boats and taking to the waterways,” says Susan 

Mellow, Public Relations Officer with the Peterborough 

Power and Sail Squadron (CPS-ECP). “Increased boat 

traffic has resulted in increased demand for boating 

education.” 

Mellow reminds boaters that they need to have on 

board all the mandatory safety equipment listed in the 

Transport Canada Safe Boating Guide for their size of 

vessel. Everyone on board must have an appropriate 

size of life jacket, approved by Transport Canada or the 

Canadian Coast Guard. 

Given the rising cost of fuel, boaters can make their 

vessels more efficient by adjusting their speed and 

acceleration and by keeping their hulls waxed and 

clean so that they glide smoothly through the water. 

Managing fire risk is a real topic of concern. Mellow 

stated that boaters should be aware of safe refuelling 

practices such as running the blower, having 

passengers disembark while refuelling, extinguishing 

open flames, not smoking or vaping, and turning off 

electrical equipment. 

In addition, there is concern about the environmental 

impacts of boating. Reducing speed, minimizing wake 

and not travelling too close to shore will protect fish 

habitat and prevent shoreline erosion. Using ecofriendly 

cleaners and not discharging grey water into 

the lake protect water quality. 

Peterborough Power and Sail Squadron’s courses, 

including instruction in charting and navigation, are 

available online so that boaters have the flexibility 

to learn at their own pace, with the aid of an online 

tutor. Peterborough is part of a larger national 

organization, the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron, 

www.cps-ecp.ca, that allows boaters to enrol in 

courses directly from their course calendar. For 

more information on their regional services, or to 

volunteer with the Peterborough Squadron, visit www.

The mandate of CPS-ECP aligns with that of the 

Canadian Safe Boating Council which provides 

practical information and apps for boaters. Examples 

of the council’s products include the “Weather to 

Boat” app, providing up-to-date local and marine 

weather forecasts for all of Canada, as well as predeparture 

checklists, rules of the road, and GEOreferenced 

marinas and boat launches. The CSBC 

provides a STARTboating.ca website featuring multilanguage 

videos of value to boaters. Also check out 

“BetterBoater” which promotes wearing lifejackets, 

cold water awareness and boating sober.

The Impact of our Work is Invisible 

We now know that meaningful change comes 

when there is positive policy changes to 

address the root causes of poverty. We 

also know that the work of food security organizations 

like Kawartha Food Share (KFS) and Kawartha Lakes 

Food Source (KLFS) truly make a difference in our 

communities. 

Our member agencies rely on the steady source of 

food we provide ensuring their clients have access to a 

variety of nutritious food that they enjoy. 

Each school offers their own Student Nutrition Program 

that KLFS and KFS supplement with fresh items (fruit, 

milk, other). Angela Fuchs, Community Development 

Coordinator of Central East Student Nutrition Program 

of Food for Kids Peterborough reports: “Nutrition 

programs (in schools) could not provide the variety 

or quality of healthy food options they do without the 

support KFS and KLFS.” 

Social service agencies provide food to their clients in 

many ways including soup kitchens, emergency meal 

in a bag, single serve frozen meals, cooking classes 

and so many more ways. Without the support of 

KLFS and KFS, the number of meals provided to the 

community would not be as robust as it is. Each month 

KFS serves over 15,000 meals through member agency 

programming, and KLFS 300. 

Both the rural and urban food banks assist those who 

need extra support. Without accessing a food bank, 

those on Ontario Disability supports, which make up 

40% of food bank visits, would not be able to put one 

meal a day on their table. “Our food banks serves 

upward of 200 people each week and we rely on the 

weekly produce, meat and non-perishable items to help 

stock our shelves.” shares a member of the Board of 

Directors of a member agency. 

Many feel shame that they can not pack their child 

a lunch for school or minimize the celebration of a 

milestone like an anniversary or birthday because they 

do not have food in their cupboard or fridge. The 

impact of our work is often invisible.

others.
