WARSAW CAVES CONSERVATION AREA AND BEAVERMEAD CAMPGROUND
SPELUNKING AND BOAT RENTALS
ARE BACK THIS SEASON
After being closed for two years due to pandemic
restrictions, the Warsaw Caves will open for
spelunking this season and boat rentals will be
available at Warsaw Caves Conservation Area (CA)
and Beavermead Campground.
Warsaw Caves CA takes its name from a series of
seven caves found in the park. The caves were
formed thousands of years ago at the end of the
last ice age, when, a deep, swift, glacier-fed river
shaped the landscape seen today.
“We are excited to invite visitors back to Warsaw
Caves; it is a popular spot for visitors to the are
who are looking for a unique outdoor experience
in nature,” explains Otonabee Conservation’s
Manager of Conservation Lands, Jessie James,
“Warsaw Caves offers an exciting opportunity to
explore caves, kettles, limestone cliffs and ledges,
underground channels, and other interesting
natural features on the landscape.”
Canoe and kayak rentals will also once again
be available to visitors at Warsaw Caves CA and
Beavermead Campground. At Warsaw Caves CA,
paddlers can enjoy a trip along the Indian River
with flat water, gentle current, beautiful scenery
and wildlife. At Beavermead Campground,
paddlers can access Meade Creek and paddle out
into Little Lake and along the Otonabee River into
downtown Peterborough.
Canoe and kayak rentals include the use of
paddles, personal floatation devices, and the
required safety gear. Sanitation stations will be set
up to disinfect equipment before and after use.
Campers are encouraged to visit otonabeeconservation.com
to plan their outdoor adventure in the
Kawartha’s and learn more about the Conservation
Areas within the Otonabee Region Watershed
that provide a diverse range of outdoor activities
for all ages.
While Covid restrictions ease across the province,
visitors to the caves this season will be encouraged
to wear a mask in enclosed spaces and to act
safely by distancing from others in close quarters
and along the trail.
LANG PIONEER VILLAGE MUSEUM
STEP BACK IN TIME AND EXPERIENCE
PETERBOROUGH COUNTY’S HISTORY COME TO LIFE
This summer, take your travels in a new direction
by travelling back in time! Modern amenities like
electricity, gas-powered vehicles, cell phones,
refrigerators, the Internet etc. are a standard part
of twenty-first century living. However, there was
a time in the not-so-distant past where these
now-common items were considered luxuries or
did not even exist. So how was food preserved
and prepared? How did people communicate
with distant relatives? How did kids entertain
themselves? Discover all this and more at Lang
Pioneer Village Museum where history is brought
to life.
Throughout the village, costumed interpreters will
introduce you to the people, trades and events
that have helped shape local history as you visit
homes and businesses from 1800 to 1910. Discover
the history and culture of the Michi Saagiig
Anishnaabeg at Aabnaabin Camp, a partnership
project with Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha
First Nation. Watch as the Blacksmith shapes a
hunk of metal into a horseshoe on the anvil and
smell the sweet scent of cookies baking in the
woodstove. Hear the school bell ring signaling
the start of classes and watch as the giant cogs
power up the grinder to produce flour at the Grist
Mill. You will feel like a time traveler visiting the
1800s! The Museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm
Wednesday through Sunday from Father’s Day to
Labour Day.
PETERBOROUGH POWER SQUADRON
HAVE THE BEST BOATING
SEASON EVER IN 2022
by Joanne Culley
“Whether you are a resident or just passing
through the area, the Peterborough Power and
Sail Squadron welcomes you to the Kawarthas,”
says Susan Mellow, Public Relations Officer.
“Now, more than ever, people are buying
boats and taking to the waterways, resulting
in increased boat traffic and a need for more
boating safety education.”
Mellow reminds boaters that they must have on
board all mandatory safety equipment for their
size of vessel, as listed in the on-line Transport
Canada Safe Boating Guide. Everyone on board
must have a Ministry of Transport Canada
approved life jacket sized for each person.
Wearing a life jacket is a simple precaution
that saves lives. The squadron will be holding
dockside recreational vessel courtesy checks
to inventory safety equipment at no cost to the
boater. The squadron will also host Flare Days
to collect expired boat flares. Watch for dates on
social media.
In a time of economic restraint, boaters can use
less fuel by adjusting their speed and acceleration
and by keeping their hulls waxed and clean so
that their boats glide smoothly through the
water. Minimizing risk of vessel fire is another
important issue. Boaters should be aware of safe
refuelling practices such as running the blower,
having passengers disembark, extinguishing
open flames, not smoking or vaping, and turning
off electrical equipment.
The public is increasingly aware of the need to
reduce their environmental footprint. Boaters
can reduce speed, minimize their wake and
avoid travelling too close to shore to protect fish
habitat and prevent shoreline erosion. Using ecofriendly
cleaners and reducing discharge of grey
water into the lake protect water quality.
Peterborough Power and Sail Squadron’s courses
are now available online so that boaters have the
flexibility to learn at their own pace, with the aid
of an online tutor. The organization is part of a
larger national organization, the Canadian Power
and Sail Squadron, providing education for more
than 80 years. To enrol in courses, go to cps-ecp.
ca and check out the course calendar.
For regional info, please visit www.
peterboroughsafeboating.org or their social
media sites (e.g. Facebook, Twitter). They wish
everyone safe boating in the Kawarthas this
summer!
What does a satellite orbiting almost 800 kilometers
from Earth have to do with the food on our plate?
The Space to Spoon exhibition demonstrates
how space technology benefits Canadian farmers
and sustainable agriculture. It also highlights
the Canadian Space Agency’s Earth observation
satellite, RADARSAT-2, and its cutting-edge
successor, RADARSAT Constellation.
a concrete example of the potential of
technological innovations to improve their daily
lives. The contribution to these innovations to
competitiveness in critical sectors of our economy,
such as agriculture and sustainable development,
is undeniable” states the Honourable Navdeep
Bains, former Minister of Innovation, Science and
Economic Development.
Visitors of all ages can enjoy a stimulating
experience with hands-on models, interactive
elements, and stunning graphics.
Jeremy Hansen – an astronaut with the Canadian
Space Agency – encourages Canadians to come
see the Space to Spoon exhibition, “As an astronaut
who grew up on a farm in southern Ontario, this is
a topic that really interests me,” he states. “Satellites
like RADARSAT-2 have made Canada a world leader
in Earth observation, which includes agricultural
land. It’s hard to imagine that space technologies
have an impact on what we eat, isn’t it? That’s
what the Space to Spoon exhibit is all about. It was
developed by the Canada Agriculture and Food
Museum and the Canadian Space Agency. Visitors
will learn how satellite data helps Canadian farmers
monitor their crops and determine the condition
of their land. Radar data allows farmers to better
manage their resources, like water and fertilizer,
and engage in agricultural practices that are
sustainable and environmentally responsible.”
“Canada is a world leader in satellite technology.
This exhibition provides Canadians with
RADARSAT-2 is one of the world’s most advanced
commercially available Earth observation radar
image providers and offers users around the world
an expanded range of high-quality data products
to hundreds of applications. It has traveled over
2.5 billion kilometers since it’s launch in 2007. The
RADARSAT Constellation Mission was the next
development in this technology. With a threesatellite
configuration, it can provide complete
coverage of Canada, flying over the High Arctic up
to four times a day, and providing access to 90% of
the world’s surface area!
there for your convenience, helping serve you
from anywhere.
All offering you a one-of-a-kind shopping
experience, with a mix of home décor helping
offering a multitude of choices from indoor and
outdoor furniture, lighting, giftware, bedding,
and window treatments.
itself apart with top-notch service from the
beginning of your shopping experience to the end,
from buying the right light, to helping you with
turnkey projects. Offering a successful Interior
Design Service covering everything for your
home, cottage, and commercial space. Including
in-store, on-site and virtual consultations,
working with customers, giving guidance and
making dreams reality. With qualified staff and
quality products, Lockside caters to customers on
any budget, in any location, with any look and
style. Helping with building floor plans, color,
fabric selections and so much more. This service
is complimentary with your purchase. A service
that is worth hundreds of dollars for FREE!
Lockside designers take pride in offering 90% of
our in-house furniture as North American made
at incredibly competitive pricing. Whereas most
interior design services source out, and purchase
items imported from overseas from international
corporations like Wayfair, Home Sense, and Ikea.
Plus, now with having high tariffs on imported
furniture, we can finally put the spotlight on our
Canadian Companies and local businesses.
Supporting Locally & Buying Canadian Made
Lockside is dedicated to supporting Canadians
by offering Canadian Made products at great
pricing and superior quality. Specializing in
custom Canadian made furniture. Shopping
locally and buying Canadian made has never
been more important, especially during this
time. By supporting your community, and fellow
Canadians we make where we live stronger.
Be prepared, act now for later.
Lockside has planned ahead, having a wide
selection of floor models on hand for you to
choose from. But with the pandemic affecting
worldwide production, wait times have increased
in all manufacturing areas. Most people start
shopping for furniture a few weeks before
they intend on having it in their home. Given
current production delays, it is recommended
to start planning for these purchases even
earlier. Lockside can help you with planning and
ordering ahead, so you are more likely to receive
your purchase by the time you need it.
LIVING LOCAL MARKETPLACE
EXPANDS ITS RETAIL SPACE
MADE-IN-ONTARIO GOURMET GOODS THE FOCUS
This article submitted by Living Local
Your one-stop shop for Made-In-Ontario gifts and
gourmet goods in Peterborough is expanding its
menu this month.
Just six months after Living Local Marketplace
opened its doors at 1179 Chemong Road, it’s
announcing an expansion based on what its
customers want most.
“Whether they’re building gift boxes or shopping
for themselves, Living Local’s customers are most
excited to try the gourmet goods we offer, be it
honey, hot sauce, maple syrup or marinade,” says
Alicia Doris, Founder.
“The offerings are not only delicious, they’re
made right here at home, and that means a lot
to shoppers - especially right now. My customers
are finding their favourites and coming back for
more; and all the while, they’re supporting their
neighbours.”
Living Local Marketplace shares the work of
artisans and small businesses from The Kawarthas
and across the province. Both in-store and on-line,
customers choose from more than 200 offerings
to build gift boxes or simply shop for themselves.
Along with gourmet goods, the store features
artwork, bath and body products, jewelry, gifts
for babies and children, and sustainable goods for
the home. Living Local ships gift boxes from coast
to coast to coast and also serves corporate clients.
Current fine food offerings range from tea, coffee
and cocktail fixings, to salsas, sauces and spices.
The additional 200 square feet of retail space
will feature the work of even more makers. It will
also have some space for refrigerated foods, to
include local cheeses and specialty products like
eatable cookie dough from Guelph, cheesecake
in a jar from Harrowsmith, and maple butter from
Peterborough County.
“We’re a destination for all things local, and first
and foremost that resonates with people. When
they realize how much is available from across the
province and in a one-stop shop, they get very
excited. Further, when I can share the stories about
the people behind the products, it hits home,
quite literally. They know they’re purchasing
with purpose,” says Doris, adding she buys from
more than 125 artisans and small businesses,
and counting.
KAWARTHA LAND TRUST
CREATING A CONSERVATION LEGACY IN
THE KAWARTHAS: FOR TODAY & FOREVER
In the past two years, Kawartha Land Trust
(KLT), a land conservation charity based in the
Kawarthas, has secured 10 new properties,
bringing the total number of properties under its
protection and stewardship to 27.
Properties acquired in 2020 and 2021 include the
Christie Bentham Wetland, McWilliams Property,
Keppler Nature Sanctuary, van Nostrand Property,
Jones Woodlot, Nogies Creek Property, Balsam
Lake Property, Ballyduff Trails, Morton Nature
Sanctuary, and the remaining two parcels of land
on Big (Boyd/Chiminis) Island (the majority of the
island was donated to KLT in 2015).
“We’ve had two years of remarkable conservation
outcomes for Kawartha Land Trust,” said,
John Kintare, KLT’s Executive Director. “The
commitment of our supporters and donors has
been fundamental in ensuring that more natural
spaces in the Kawarthas will be protected for
current and future generations.”
Founded in 2001, KLT has 27 properties that
protect more than 4,800 acres of ecologically
diverse lands, some of which include hiking trails
accessed by thousands of visitors who live in or
visit the Kawarthas every year.
plan and implement strategies to ensure the land
entrusted to the organization is maintained and,
where necessary, restored.
In the past year alone, KLT staff and volunteers
planted 1,600 White Pine trees at John
Earle Chase Memorial Park and 1,000 mixed
trees and shrubs, including Sugar Maples,
Tamarack, and Ironwood, at Ballyduff Trails
and the McKim-Garsonnin Property. They also
organized a garbage clean-up day on Big (Boyd/
Chiminis) Island and conducted species at risk
monitoring, removed invasive plant species, and
restored critical habitats at several properties.
Preparations are already underway for additional
tree planting at Ballyduff Trails and Dance Nature
Sanctuary this year.
“Land is the answer to many of the issues we face
today, including biodiversity loss and climate
change,” says Thomas Unrau, KLT’s Director of
Community Conservation. “Our conservation
efforts protect wetlands against development
and provide critical habitat for species at risk
like Blanding’s turtles. Our land management
increases the carbon storage potential of our
properties. Our work ensures that the Kawarthas
sustains thriving ecosystems for years to come.”
While land securement is an integral part of
every land conservation organization, the
work does not stop there. KLT’s dedicated land
stewardship team works throughout the year to
100 YEAR OLD TRADITION
At Empire, our cheese is made in the
traditional way in open-style vats. In our
opinion, this gives the cheese and curd a
better flavour. We use no additives to boost
production, and there are no flavours added
to our cheddar. It is all natural, with no added
preservatives.
After production, the cheese is naturally aged in
cold storage, cut and vacuum packaged in our
modern facilities to preserve the flavour. A true
mix of tradition and modern technology to give
our customers a better product!
Empire Cheese Factory also offers a wide
selection of gift baskets and boxes in a range of
prices, which feature a selection of our famous
cheese, with various quality biscuits, jams,
honey, candy and maple syrup.
Please ask us about fundraising opportunities.
Empire Cheese is owned by local dairy farmers.
VICTORIA STATION PHASE TWO!
MAINTENANCE-FREE ADULT LIFESTYLE
CONDOMINIUMS IN LINDSAY
Victoria Station Condominium in the heart of
historic downtown Lindsay will be a six storey
condominium development on the Railway
Lands. Architectural design and details will
resemble the Union Station Condominium
which was the first phase of the Railway Lands
Development.
This new structure will be built by the father
and son team of Don and Mark Wilson. This two
generation family has been building outstanding
projects in Lindsay and surrounding area for over
50 years. Don Wilson Construction Co. Ltd. and
MVW Construction and Engineering are trusted
names in the community. The exceptional
quality of their work is evident in their many
projects, including the beautiful Arbour Village
community of homes and condominiums located
on Green Arbour Way in Lindsay. An anticipated
four-storey condominium will be coming to this
community in the future.
Victoria Station Condominium is meticulously
planned, featuring ten different models of one
and two-bedroom suites. An open concept with
a glass balcony or ground-level terrace provides
a sophisticated and functional design, and the
freedom to choose from a selection of finishes
allows the new homeowner opportunity to
bring their taste and style to their new home.
This new development will include underground
parking, two large lobbies and guest suite on the
main floor, and a party room and exercise room
complete with balconies on the top floor.
Close to Kawartha cottage country and the home
to Lock 33 on the Trent-Severn Waterway, Victoria
Station is adjacent to unique shops, theatres,
dining, concerts at Victoria Park, and walking
trails. This makes Victoria Station truly a location
where you can live, work, and play!
For more information, please call 705-328-9055.
