The clear waters and cool forests of the Kawarthas offer

WARSAW CAVES CONSERVATION AREA AND BEAVERMEAD CAMPGROUND
SPELUNKING AND BOAT RENTALS
ARE BACK THIS SEASON
After being closed for two years due to pandemic
restrictions, the Warsaw Caves will open for
spelunking this season and boat rentals will be
available at Warsaw Caves Conservation Area (CA)
and Beavermead Campground.
Warsaw Caves CA takes its name from a series of
seven caves found in the park. The caves were
formed thousands of years ago at the end of the
last ice age, when, a deep, swift, glacier-fed river
shaped the landscape seen today.
“We are excited to invite visitors back to Warsaw
Caves; it is a popular spot for visitors to the are
who are looking for a unique outdoor experience
in nature,” explains Otonabee Conservation’s
Manager of Conservation Lands, Jessie James,
“Warsaw Caves offers an exciting opportunity to
explore caves, kettles, limestone cliffs and ledges,
underground channels, and other interesting
natural features on the landscape.”
Canoe and kayak rentals will also once again
be available to visitors at Warsaw Caves CA and
Beavermead Campground. At Warsaw Caves CA,
paddlers can enjoy a trip along the Indian River
with flat water, gentle current, beautiful scenery
and wildlife. At Beavermead Campground,
paddlers can access Meade Creek and paddle out
into Little Lake and along the Otonabee River into
downtown Peterborough.
Canoe and kayak rentals include the use of
paddles, personal floatation devices, and the
required safety gear. Sanitation stations will be set
up to disinfect equipment before and after use.
Campers are encouraged to visit otonabeeconservation.com
to plan their outdoor adventure in the
Kawartha’s and learn more about the Conservation
Areas within the Otonabee Region Watershed
that provide a diverse range of outdoor activities
for all ages.
While Covid restrictions ease across the province,
visitors to the caves this season will be encouraged
to wear a mask in enclosed spaces and to act
safely by distancing from others in close quarters
and along the trail.

LANG PIONEER VILLAGE MUSEUM
STEP BACK IN TIME AND EXPERIENCE
PETERBOROUGH COUNTY’S HISTORY COME TO LIFE
This summer, take your travels in a new direction
by travelling back in time! Modern amenities like
electricity, gas-powered vehicles, cell phones,
refrigerators, the Internet etc. are a standard part
of twenty-first century living. However, there was
a time in the not-so-distant past where these
now-common items were considered luxuries or
did not even exist. So how was food preserved
and prepared? How did people communicate
with distant relatives? How did kids entertain
themselves? Discover all this and more at Lang
Pioneer Village Museum where history is brought
to life.
Throughout the village, costumed interpreters will
introduce you to the people, trades and events
that have helped shape local history as you visit
homes and businesses from 1800 to 1910. Discover
the history and culture of the Michi Saagiig
Anishnaabeg at Aabnaabin Camp, a partnership
project with Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha
First Nation. Watch as the Blacksmith shapes a
hunk of metal into a horseshoe on the anvil and
smell the sweet scent of cookies baking in the
woodstove. Hear the school bell ring signaling
the start of classes and watch as the giant cogs
power up the grinder to produce flour at the Grist
Mill. You will feel like a time traveler visiting the
1800s! The Museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm
Wednesday through Sunday from Father’s Day to
Labour Day.
Lang Pioneer Village Museum is also open
seasonally for special events. Kicking off the

Museum’s event schedule is the Kawarthas’
original tractor show, the 25th Annual Father’s
Day Smoke & Steam Show on Sunday, June 19.
Antique and classic car enthusiasts showcase
their cars and motorcycles with the historic
village as the backdrop during the 25th Annual
Transportation Day Car & Motorcycle Show on
Sunday, July 10. Discover 19th-century wedding
traditions and practices with Tying the Knot: Early
Wedding Traditions taking place Sunday, August
14. Experience the village by the soft glow of
lamps and lantern with Village by Lantern Light
on Friday & Saturday, September 16 & 17.
The sweetest event of the year returns October
2 as Lang Pioneer Village Museum celebrates
apples and the harvest with Applefest. Discover
the origins and traditions of Halloween with
Historic All Hallows’ Eve taking place Friday &
Saturday, October 28 & 29. New this year, satisfy
all your holiday shopping needs on Saturday,
November 19 at the Museum’s Christmas Bazaar
in the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage
Building. Finally, get into the merriment of the
season with a traditional pioneer Christmas,
Saturday & Sunday, December 3 & 4, with

HAVE THE BEST BOATING
SEASON EVER IN 2022

“Whether you are a resident or just passing
through the area, the Peterborough Power and
Sail Squadron welcomes you to the Kawarthas,”
says Susan Mellow, Public Relations Officer.
“Now, more than ever, people are buying
boats and taking to the waterways, resulting
in increased boat traffic and a need for more
boating safety education.”
Mellow reminds boaters that they must have on
board all mandatory safety equipment for their
size of vessel, as listed in the on-line Transport
Canada Safe Boating Guide. Everyone on board
must have a Ministry of Transport Canada
approved life jacket sized for each person.
Wearing a life jacket is a simple precaution
that saves lives. The squadron will be holding
dockside recreational vessel courtesy checks
to inventory safety equipment at no cost to the
boater. The squadron will also host Flare Days
to collect expired boat flares. Watch for dates on
social media.
In a time of economic restraint, boaters can use
less fuel by adjusting their speed and acceleration
and by keeping their hulls waxed and clean so
that their boats glide smoothly through the
water. Minimizing risk of vessel fire is another
important issue. Boaters should be aware of safe
refuelling practices such as running the blower,
having passengers disembark, extinguishing
open flames, not smoking or vaping, and turning
off electrical equipment.
The public is increasingly aware of the need to
reduce their environmental footprint. Boaters
can reduce speed, minimize their wake and
avoid travelling too close to shore to protect fish
habitat and prevent shoreline erosion. Using ecofriendly
cleaners and reducing discharge of grey
water into the lake protect water quality.
Peterborough Power and Sail Squadron’s courses
are now available online so that boaters have the
flexibility to learn at their own pace, with the aid
of an online tutor. The organization is part of a
larger national organization, the Canadian Power
and Sail Squadron, providing education for more
than 80 years. To enrol in courses, go to cps-ecp.

For 37 years, Milltown Mini Golf Family Fun Centre
has been offering a wide range of fun activities on
two acres of landscaped park at 933 Lansdowne
St. W., behind the Swiss Chalet. This familyoriented
amusement park is a perfect place in
which to spend some safe, outdoor time, with all
COVID-19 restrictions in place.
Visitors can putt by two fish ponds, a working
water wheel, and a running water sluice, all
surrounded by beautiful gardens. To add to your
enjoyment they also offer batting cages, water
wars with water balloons, a paintball shooting
gallery, gemstone panning, and treasure hunt
for real coins from around the world with an
authentic metal detector. Enjoy yourself at the
paintball target range and see how many targets
you can successfully knock down. Visitors can mix
and match the activities, with one-two- and threepacks
available at reduced prices.
“We are following all of the public health
guidelines to ensure a safe experience for our
visitors,” says Barry Cross, owner. “We clean after
each use, we’re located outdoors with lots of fresh
air flowing around, and there is lots of space in
which to spread out and keep socially distanced.”
All equipment, such as golf clubs, golf balls,
batting cage helmets and bats, paintball guns and
contact area, and all gemstone panning contact
areas are sanitized after each use.
“Our largest age group are those between 14 and
24 years of age,” he continues. “And we’ve seen an
increase in families during the last year looking
for something fun to do with the kids, due to the
restrictions on travelling.”
Milltown welcomes birthday parties where visitors
can bring their own food and cake or Milltown can
supply pizza from Pizza Hut, ice cream, soft drinks
and other snacks.
Milltown has been a family-owned business since
1985. Their objective is for you to experience a fun
and enjoyable time in a safe environment with
your family and friends.

what the Space to Spoon exhibit is all about. It was
developed by the Canada Agriculture and Food
Museum and the Canadian Space Agency. Visitors
will learn how satellite data helps Canadian farmers
monitor their crops and determine the condition
of their land. Radar data allows farmers to better
manage their resources, like water and fertilizer,
and engage in agricultural practices that are
sustainable and environmentally responsible.”

menu this month.
Just six months after Living Local Marketplace
opened its doors at 1179 Chemong Road, it’s
announcing an expansion based on what its
customers want most.
“Whether they’re building gift boxes or shopping
for themselves, Living Local’s customers are most
excited to try the gourmet goods we offer, be it
honey, hot sauce, maple syrup or marinade,” says
Alicia Doris, Founder.
“The offerings are not only delicious, they’re

KAWARTHA LAND TRUST
CREATING A CONSERVATION LEGACY IN
THE KAWARTHAS: FOR TODAY & FOREVER
In the past two years, Kawartha Land Trust
(KLT), a land conservation charity based in the
Kawarthas, has secured 10 new properties,
bringing the total number of properties under its
protection and stewardship to 27.
Properties acquired in 2020 and 2021 include the
Christie Bentham Wetland, McWilliams Property,
Keppler Nature Sanctuary, van Nostrand Property,
Jones Woodlot, Nogies Creek Property, Balsam
Lake Property, Ballyduff Trails, Morton Nature
Sanctuary, and the remaining two parcels of land
on Big (Boyd/Chiminis) Island (the majority of the
island was donated to KLT in 2015).
“We’ve had two years of remarkable conservation
outcomes for Kawartha Land Trust,” said,
John Kintare, KLT’s Executive Director. “The
commitment of our supporters and donors has
been fundamental in ensuring that more natural
spaces in the Kawarthas will be protected for
current and future generations.”
Founded in 2001, KLT has 27 properties that
protect more than 4,800 acres of ecologically
diverse lands, some of which include hiking trails
accessed by thousands of visitors who live in or
visit the Kawarthas every year.

In the past year alone, KLT staff and volunteers
planted 1,600 White Pine trees at John
Earle Chase Memorial Park and 1,000 mixed
trees and shrubs, including Sugar Maples,
Tamarack, and Ironwood, at Ballyduff Trails
and the McKim-Garsonnin Property. They also
organized a garbage clean-up day on Big (Boyd/
Chiminis) Island and conducted species at risk
monitoring, removed invasive plant species, and
restored critical habitats at several properties.
Preparations are already underway for additional
tree planting at Ballyduff Trails and Dance Nature
Sanctuary this year.
“Land is the answer to many of the issues we face
today, including biodiversity loss and climate
change,” says Thomas Unrau, KLT’s Director of
Community Conservation. “Our conservation
efforts protect wetlands against development
and provide critical habitat for species at risk
like Blanding’s turtles. Our land management
increases the carbon storage potential of our
properties. Our work ensures that the Kawarthas
sustains thriving ecosystems for years to come.”

At Empire, our cheese is made in the
traditional way in open-style vats. In our
opinion, this gives the cheese and curd a
better flavour. We use no additives to boost
production, and there are no flavours added
to our cheddar. It is all natural, with no added
preservatives.
After production, the cheese is naturally aged in
cold storage, cut and vacuum packaged in our
modern facilities to preserve the flavour. A true
mix of tradition and modern technology to give
