Dining Reservations
Please call the club to make reservation for a la
carte dining - so we may accomodate you with
outstanding service. Friday nights are extremely
busy at the club and we will continue to try and
accomodate all walk ins. However, members
who make reservations will always be accomodated
first. Please make your reservation for the
time you would like to sit down and order and
allow for ample time for cocktails beforehand
when deciding on your resrvation time.

Please call the club to make reservations, for all
Special Events or Club Functions at the club.
Whether you decide to sit outside in a more casual
enviroment at the Harbor Grill or if you
choose to sit inside in the main clubhouse - your
reservation is important in the head count when
preparing a buffet, so, we may properly prepare
for the food and service necessary. We ask that
you cancel your reservations at least 48 hours
before the event to avoid being charged in full.

adherence to this practice and policy, so that we
may budget and plan appropriately.

Thursday Men’s Bridge Group
Duplicate Bridge Anyone?
We have a small group that has started a duplicate bridge game on Thursday afternoons
from 1:15 pm to about 4:30 pm in the dining room. We would like to invite any EGYC members
with an interest in duplicate to play. Most of the current participants are advanced
beginners or intermeddiate players. However, everyone is welcome and encouraged to
play regardless of level. This is not a sanctioned game. Our intent is to have fun and gain
some experience in duplicate play.
Because of the the nature of duplicate play, it is necessary that you sign up with a partner.
Also, we must know in advance who is playing so that travelers and tables can be set up
accordingly. If you wish to play, please leave your name,
partner’s name and telephone number with the front
desk at the club , by Tuesday Noon of the week you wish
to play.

Comments
You may be aware that the
Harbor Grill has been without
a manager for the last
few months. Although our
staff has done an admirable
job, we fully recognize that
changes are necessary.
Loraine has been hesitant to
hire a manger without first taking a step back and
assessing the entire operation of the Grill. Our first
step was to hire an Executive Chef, which we did.
Chef Cook will be instrumental in shaping the direction
of the Grill. In the meantime, we felt it was
very important to hire a manager on an interim
basis to get through the next couple of months.
Loraine’s husband, Michael Vienne, has agreed to
take on this interim role. Michael has the restaurant
and club management experience to lead our
staff as we look to make much needed changes and
ultimately hire a permanent manager.
Please make plans to attend the Club this year for
our inaugural Super Bowl Party. Whether you prefer
family fun and games at the Harbor Grill or a
more “adult friendly” atmosphere inside, the Club
will be THE place to watch the big game!! Stay
tuned for more details...
It is not too late to submit your name to be considered
as a nominee for next years Board of Governor
election. Simply email our nominating committee
chairperson, Past Commodore Ben Saxon (bsaxon2@yahoo.com).
Ben and his committee will be
happy to discuss with you the expectations and responsibilities
of serving our fine Club.
December is always a very busy and exciting time
around our Club and this year is no exception. I
hope to see many of you at the Anniversary Ball
and Holiday Party. I am sure to see almost all of
you at the Boat Parades. And for those of us with
kids and/or grandkids, I’ll see you for sure at the
Children’s Holiday Party. Truly a great time of year!
In closing, I would like to congratulate our Treasurer,
Michael Cerow, and his wife Tonya on the
birth of their first child. Pierce Michael Cerow was
born healthy and happy on Saturday, November
10th. Plenty of time to ensure a tax credit!

I’ve completed my first
month at Eau Gallie Yacht
Club, and I must say the
staff is a pleasure to work
with and the membership
is great. The Club has a
welcoming atmosphere all
around.
The November Wine Dinner Series was enjoyed
by all who attended, with hors d’oeuvres and a five
course dinner that followed. The Clubhouse Restaurant
has been busy through the month and with
December upon us, we expect it to be busier. In
upcoming months, the kitchen staff will be working
on increasing the quality of flavor profiles, efficiency
of execution, and presentation factors.
Each month in the Spray, I will be informing the
membership on some of the upcoming a la carte
menu changes, Banquet menu concepts and revisions,
restaurant updates, and some cooking tips/
tricks for all those that love to cook. Moving into
the busy Holiday season we will be streamlining
some of the menu concepts already in place. In
January we will have new menus in the Clubhouse
Restaurant, The Harbor Grill, and a new Banquet/
Catering Menu.
I look forward to working with the Eau Gallie Staff
and increasing menu variety and member satisfaction.

Cooking Tip: When adding oil to the cooking water
for pasta, many believe that the oil keeps the pasta
from sticking together. When in fact, oil and water
don’t mix and the oil floats to the top. With the addition
of oil, and it being at the top, it actually prevents
the pot from “boiling over” and making a fun mess
to clean-up.

It’s Holiday Boat Parade

of our annual Holiday Boat
Parade. This is one of the
most enjoyable events we

have each year at the Club. If you would like to
decorate your boat and participate in the parade,
please plan to do so! There really aren’t any rules
and everyone enjoys the creativity shown each year
by all the boats.
Depending on the chill in the air, this month
marks the start of our sailfish season. The season
will usually peak in late January or February off
South Florida, but we get the early shot at the fish
being a little further north. Sailfish are ‘Florida’s
Gamefish’, which is well documented in the multitude
of photos thru the years and large tournaments
in South Florida during the winter season.
Snook season will close on December 15th and
Grouper January 1st so this is your last chance to
bring home some of the best eating fish we have
locally.
Looking ahead to next year we will have our cruise
to the Melbourne Art Festival April 26-28th and
our Fishing Tournament May 18th.
If you have a boating event, race, trip or good fish
story to share, please drop me a line. The variety
and level of events our members participate in are
wonderful to hear about and share.

BOUNTY DOWN!
The HMS Bounty, a 180foot
replica of the 18th
century sailing ship, went
down in 18 ft waves off
of Cape Hatteras, NC
during Hurricane Sandy
on Monday, October 29.
Fourteen crew members
were rescued by the US
Coast Guard. One died.
A week before the storm, Captain Walbridge
left Connecticut believing he could navigate the
ship around the storm.
Captain, what were you thinking? He said
“they were prepared.” In basic boating classes
offered by the USCG Auxiliary and the Power
Squadron, there are lessons about “preparing
before you go.” Check the weather, check your
vessel and equipment, and then determine if
your crew is prepared. Do not take chances. A
preliminary weather check would show that the
wind field was 1,000 miles wide. He must not
have seen the movie “The Perfect Storm.” He
stated on his Facebook site “We are just going
to keep trying to go fast.”
After many USCG resources were used in the
search after 14 crew were recovered over a three
day period, it was determined “survivability”
for the Captain of the stricken ship was no longer
possible. He had been in lots of hairy situations
and was very familiar with the vessel he
mastered over 17 years. His luck ran out.
When you head out on your vessel, check the
weather beyond the area of your voyage.
Stay in port if there is a possibility of changing
conditions. May you always have fair winds

From the Director to the
FLORIDA COUNCIL

It is hard to believe that it is December already.
Where did the year go? December is such a busy month for all
of us with presents to buy, plans to make, and not least of all prepare for the Christmas
boat parade at the club. Be sure to make your reservations early.
The FCYC held their General Meeting in November at the Royal Palm Yacht and Country
Club in Boca Raton. The Eau Gallie members gave the council outstanding support
and we won the attendance award once again. Making the journey south was Past
FCYC Commodore Dentis McDaniel and Jean, P/C Bruce Hess and Carol, Vice Commodore
Peter Hienen and Allison, Col. Harry Pawlak and Darlene, Dr. Ronald Askeland
and Jo Ellen and Jon and Edy Williams.
A good time was had by all with excellent food on Friday and Saturday evening, a tour
of Morikami, a Japanese museum and gardens, on Saturday, a fascinating talk about
sea turtles by a marine research institute, and a super dance band on Saturday night. I
almost forgot to mention the great happy hour with extra large drinks. The Royal Palm
club is really beautiful and if you are in the area it is well worth a visit.
The main item on the agenda may have been welcoming our newest member of the
council which is Pelican Isles Yacht Club, located in the Naples area. We exchanged
burgees with their club and the new burgee will be hanging in our main clubhouse
and the Harbour Grill shortly. Be sure to look for their burgee as it is a unique design
and very attractive.
The next meeting of the FCYC will be the weekend of January 11th and 12th at the
Smyrna Yacht Club located in New Smyrna Beach. This will be a wonderful opportunity
to attend a FCYC meeting. As I have mentioned many times, the meetings are informative,
fun, educational and you meet some very nice people from around the state with
similar interests. We will have the details concerning the meeting after the third week
of December. One of the planned activities will be a tour of the Boston Whaler factory.

with Emily in the office. We hope to see you there!

We have planned a four night Caribbean
Cruise, departing from Port Canaveral, on
Royal Caribbean’s Monarch of the Seas. We
will depart on Monday, January 28th and return

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Roger Shurtleff
Long time EGYC member, Roger Shurtleff,
is the Executive Officer of the Captains Table
which started about 35 years ago when Bob
Kendall asked his friends to meet him for lunch
Tuesday at noon. It was a mixture of retired men
and those still working. They enjoyed the lunch
and decided to meet again next Tuesday, five
showed up. Meeting again the following week,
six showed up and more every week thereafter;
they decided to give the group a name “Captains
Table”.
About a year later they averaged 15 members
and decided to find speakers. Today, because of
Roger’s diligent performance in locating people
who are willing to share their interesting stories,
the men of the Captains Table attend by the dozens.
This group of men enjoys the camaraderie;
and new friendships are being made each week
by bringing in new members and speakers. If
you know of anyone who would like to come
in and speak to the group please let Roger know
next time you are at the Captains Table.
Every man of the E.G.Y.C. is welcome to join
the group. When you attend three times you are
a member and receive your name badge. Our
about 80 members are of all ages – from grandfathers
or “active” retired men to newlywed…
“Come join us!”

The Space Coast Tennis
League season is behind
us. Our teams did great,
and gave their best effort
every week and that
is all we can ask for.
The Spring season starts
in January and we will
begin team clinics on
Monday, January 7, 2013. I look forward
to another successful tennis season for our
Club.
The Club Championships are coming up in
January next year. We will try to do both singles
and doubles tournaments in January in
two consecutive weekends. The dates for the
singles tournament are January 18th-20th
and for doubles January 25th-27th. I hope
we will have a great sign up and interest for
both events. If we have enough players, we
will split the tournaments into two levels; to
be more competitive and fun for everyone.
You can start signing up by calling the Pro
Shop at 777-6118.

of Head and Tecnifibre racquets. Also, we

Hitting Lessons
Hitting lessons: reminder that I offer hitting lessons.
Come out and get a great workout. If interested
contact me and we will find a good day
and time to hit. It is $25 for half an hour and
$40 for full hour.
Three Plus Me
If you are a group of players and you find yourself
short for your doubles game; I would love to
help you out by being the fourth player. The cost
is $12 per player for an hour and a half session
in which we will explore competitive play and at
the same time play a great set of doubles.
Ball Machine Club
Reminder that you can rent the ball machine for
a full year for only $100 dollars. Call the Pro
Shop at 777-6118 to sign up.

Three Tips for a Better Serve
New Online Court Reservation Sytem
www.courtsideusa.com is a new website where
you can go to reserve a court online. All you
have to do is go to the site and create your player
account; it takes less than five minutes to do.
So far, we have 67 members who created their
accounts and I hope we can hit 100 members
soon. The rules are still the same; you can reserve
the court 72 hours ahead of time. The Courtside
website is linked to our club website so you have
easy access to get to it.
Men’s Night
Men’s Night is being held every Thursday with
open hitting at 4:30 pm. The first two hours is a
drop in. Anyone can come and play and people
of different levels can play each other. Starting
at 6:30 pm, I will pair players up and they will
play the best of 3 matches with players of a similar
level. It is the best way for new members to
get involved and meet other Men Tennis players
who play at the Club.
1: Toss the ball in front and slightly to the right. A toss in front assures that you will
transfer your body weight forward and generate more speed.
2: The ball leaves the hand around eye level. If you release the ball too early it will go to
far out in front and if you release the ball late it will go behind you.
3:Hit the ball with the arm fully extended, that way you will get most power and
speed. Many people let the ball drop too low and hit the ball with the arm bent.
That way you end up pushing the ball and allow the opponent to take control of
the point from the start.

Wow, it is December already!
What a busy year
this has been. It has been
exciting to witness the
changes at our club. Our
New General Manager,
Mrs. Loraine Vienne, is
doing a great job and she
brings with her many new

ideas. It is a pleasure working with her and she has
assured us that, going forward, we will be able to
make reservations for assigned seating at our next
luncheon.
The Halloween weekend was such fun. The club
employees and some members worked hard to
decorate our club to be very spooky and pretty
thrilling. I was just one of many that let out a loud
scream when I entered the front door of the club
on Saturday night. The Women’s Council entered
the “Golden Cauldron” contest with a spooky
pink theme. Linda Davis of Petals designed our
vignette and we are so thankful to have her on our
team.
As usual, our luncheon with Mr. Link Johnsten of
Eau Gallie Florist was enjoyed by all that attended.
We are inspired by his many talents and wonderful
creations. He makes it look so easy, I feel sure
many of us went home and tried to recreate one
of his arrangements. We want to thank Link for
giving his time and energy to get us in the Holiday
frame of mind.
As of today we have over twenty women with reservations
for EGYC Ladies Cruise in late January,
2013. It is still not too late to sign up. The Royal
Caribbean Cruise Line is holding a few more
rooms for us until the first week in December. We
have a great group of women attending, we hope
you can make it too.
Most of us are busy, busy, busy this month so you
might want to call the club, now, and sign up for
“Spa Day at Maxine’s.” the date is Saturday, January
5th. Throw on your sweats, don’t bother with
makeup and enjoy a day of pampering.
October Bunko winners were: Audrey Stein, Jean
Frischman, Denise Roberts and Sherra Cameruci.
Due to the Holidays, Bunko was canceled for November
and December and will return the third
Wednesday of January. Remember to bring your
$5.00 contribution.

We have a small group that has started a duplicate
bridge game on Thursday afternoons from
1:15 pm to about 4:30 pm in the dining room.
Because of the the nature of duplicate play, it
is necessary that you sign up with a partner.
Also, we must know in advance who is playing
so that travelers and tables can be set up accordingly.

name, partner’s name and telephone number
with the front desk at the club , by Tuesday
