Dining Reservations
Please call the club to make reservation for a la
carte dining - so we may accomodate you with
outstanding service. Friday nights are extremely
busy at the club and we will continue to try and
accomodate all walk ins. However, members
who make reservations will always be accomodated
first. Please make your reservation for the
time you would like to sit down and orde. Also,
allow for ample time for cocktails beforehand
when deciding on your resrvation time.

Club Function Reservations
Please call the club to make reservations, for all
Special Events or Club Functions at the club.
Whether you decide to sit outside in a more
casual enviroment at the Harbor Grill or if you
choose to sit inside in the main clubhouse - your
reservation is important in the head count when
preparing a buffet, so, we may properly prepare
for the food and service necessary. We ask that
you cancel your reservations at least 48 hours
before the event to avoid being charged in full.
Harbor Grill will be CLOSED on the
first two Thursdays in January
The Harbor Grill will reopen on Thursday with
the beginning of league place on January 17th.
Also, please note that the Harbor Grill Hours
will change to opening at 12:00 noon on Saturdays
and Sundays through the Winter Months as
they have done in the past.

As 2012 comes to a close,
I find myself reflecting on
everything that has made
this year a remarkable one.
Health, happiness and family
are foremost in my mind.
Among my blessings is our
EGYC family and the privi-
lege to serve as your Commodore. EGYC holds a
lifetime of wonderful memories for me and I now
relish seeing my children enjoy growing up in and
around the club family.
As your Commodore, I am immensely proud of
our club and all we have accomplished together.
It has been a year of transition – a new general
manager and a new executive chef are significant
changes for any club especially occurring in the
same year. Your board of Governors, your management
team and I will continue to work on our
five top priorities to assure that we:
• Provide exceptional service and delicious food in
an extraordinary setting
• Offer programming for varied ages and interests
• Create and Maintain an environment where people
can connect and make lasting memories
•Be fiscally responsible
• Develop our management team and talented and
committed staff, to excel in service and programming
I thank you for your continued support and seek
your input as we continue with our progress
through the next year. Communication is the key
and I appreciate the time you have spent with me
at the “Third Thursday” monthly lunches and for
your participation in “Coffee with the GM” - both
initiatives we started this year to foster member input.
Change is hard and your board and I make the
best, though often tough, decisions for the good
of the club.
On a recent Friday night at the Harbor Grill, I
talked with a couple from the Keys that have reciprocal
privileges and travel by boat. They hadn’t
visited EGYC in years having been turned away
for reasons that really weren’t logical. This time
they were accommodated, received a warm welcome
from staff and members and were enjoying
a delightful evening. The following weekend, I was
wowed by our annual Anniversary Ball & Holiday
Event - Loraine, Chef Lance and their talented
crew put on an extraordinary event! The décor, the
meal, the entertainment all made it a special night
for our members and what made me most happy
was that our attendance of over 200 had doubled
from last year!

Duplicate Bridge Anyone?
We have a small group that has started a duplicate
bridge game on Thursday afternoons
from 1:15 pm to about 4:30 pm in the dining
room. We would like to invite any EGYC
members with an interest in duplicate to
play. Most of the current participants are advanced
beginners or intermeddiate players.
However, everyone is welcome and encouraged
to play regardless of level. This is not a
sanctioned game. Our intent is to have fun
and gain some experience in duplicate play.
Because of the the nature of duplicate play, it
is necessary that you sign up with a partner.
Also, we must know in advance who is playing
so that travelers and tables can be set up
accordingly. If you wish to play, please leave
your name, partner’s name and telephone
number with the front desk at the club , by
Tuesday Noon of the week you wish to play.

everyone had a very happy
holiday season.
Now that we’ve brought in the New Year, it’s
time to start thinking about 2013. When we
start the New Year, we tend to think of it as a
“fresh start” for our personal activities, hobbies,
and routines.
Here’s a refreshing recipe for a fresh start to a
New Year…
Lemon-Ginger Granite
1 ½ cups fresh lemon juice
1 ½ cups granulated sugar
1 ¼ cups water
To taste – ground ginger
Place a non-reactive shallow metal pan in the
freezer to chill. Combine all ingredients in a
non-reactive saucepan and stir over medium
heat until sugar is dissolved (taste the mixture
for sugar content and adjust as desired). Pour
mixture into mixing bowl and chill over larger
bowl of ice. Stir often until cooled. Pour mixture
from bowl into the metal pan in freezer.
Freeze for 1 hour. Using a large spoon break
up the icy edges and stir them into the center.
Repeat this process every hour until frozen.
Freeze overnight to stabilize ice crystals.
Scrape with fork into large ice crystals, mound
into glass, top as desired and serve.

Harbor Grill upgrades - in December we purchased
a Panini Press for the Harbor Grill. Look
for weekly Panini specials on the white board or
ask for your favorite sandwich to be pressed. A
nice crispy roll or bread adds a nice touch to your
usual sandwich. In February we will be purchasing an additional
food prep station for the Harbor Grill kitchen. New menus for the
Harbor Grill will also be rolled out in February.
Point of Sale equipment upgrades - in February
we will be upgrading the POS terminals at the club. The current
equipment is starting to fail and it is time for an update.
Suggestions - I have been getting a number of suggestions without
names or contact information. I can not respond to member requests without this.
Coming Soon iPhone and iPad Classes - as soon as we have wifi working at the club I will
start conducting classes for members on tips and tricks to better use your Apple smartphones
and tablets. At several FCYC weekends I have been holding classes and have been
asked to start holding them at the club. Please contact me if you are interested in attending.

EVENING COLORS
In response to a request from our Board of Governors, I am pleased to report that
effective November 1, 2012 Silver Gavel has accepted the responsibility for our Evening
Colors ceremony. Silver Gavel plans to continue the use of local high school
color guards when they are available. Our goal is to continue the importance of
Evening Colors and enhance it whenever possible. We welcome your comments
and suggestions.
COMPASS ROSE
As reported earlier the six-foot hardwood compass rose is to be installed in February
and is still on schedule. Funding for this project is provided by Silver Gavel due
to other capital projects competing for funds. We look forward to adding this significant
nautical item as it will be a great compliment to our very popular Dragon
Point Bar.

Model Testing of Ships
Since the time of Benjamin
Franklin, designers
have tried to determine
the properties of a ship
by studying the behavior
of reduced size models
in a test basin. They
soon realized that such
studies with models did not accurately show
the properties of its full size counterpart, and
it was not until William Froude’s work in the
1860s that it was understood why the model
testing was unsatisfactory. Froude determined
that a ship’s speed through water was controlled
by two factors: first, the friction of the water
on the hull, and secondly, the waterwaves created
by the vessel as its hull displaced the water
on its course. These two factors are governed by
different physical laws, and must be taken into
account when extrapolating from the model to
its full- size pattern. Naval architects have now
found these model studies have great value,
and a basin 360 ft. in length is available at the
University of Michigan should research require
such a length. #2219
In Holland, the Dutch have taken the model
testing into a new area, with the construction
of a fully enclosed testing basin, in which the
ambient air pressure can be reduced to a fraction
of atmospheric, and with the basin’s wave
making capabilities is said to more accurately
demonstrate the effect of waves on ships, and
offshore structures such as oil drilling rigs. (you
must look elsewhere if you want a full explanation
of this.)

From the Director to the
FLORIDA COUNCIL
OF YACHT CLUBS

Is it really 2013 already? I am not sure I was ready for
2012 to be over quite as soon as it was a very interesting year. We had some
major changes at our yacht club with the hiring of a new General Manager.
She has made some difficult decisions that I feel sure everyone has noticed.
We had fireworks for the first time for the Fourth of July celebration, we have
a new executive chef that has been well received and we have a new dock
master that is doing a great job by all reports. These are just a few of the most
visible changes and I expect in 2013 we will continue to see more of the same.
Certainly some of this credit must also go to our Board of Directors who has
had to make some tough choices. At the same time we have had an interesting
year at the FCYC. In 2012 we admitted a new club to the council, Pelican
Isles Yacht Club in Naples Florida. The Council held six General Meetings,
around the state, and Eau Gallie won four of the attendance awards. That
award signifies the wonderful support our members give to the FCYC and it
certainly enhances our reputation as a council member. A special thanks to
our members who attend many of the meetings on a regular basis. The FCYC
also updated the “Guide to The Clubs” and the new addition will be available
at our club by the end of this month. The Council also had a good year financially
and as a result they have lowered the yearly dues to all the clubs. We
can only hope that the coming year will be as good to our club and the council
as 2012 was.
This month the General Meeting will be held at Smyrna Yacht Club in New
Smyrna Beach on January 11th – 13th. This might be a good time to make
one more new years resolution and attend at least one FCYC meeting this
year. New Smyrna is close and it looks like a very interesting and entertaining
meeting is planned. On Saturday morning a tour of the Boston Whaler boat
factory is scheduled which should be very informative. All the details on the
meeting are on the FCYC website or you can contact Emily in her office at the
club. Also be sure to make your reservations with Emily even if you just come
up for the Saturday meetings. We need to keep that winning attendance
award going into the new year. Hope to see you there!

We have planned a four night Caribbean
Cruise, departing from Port Canaveral, on
Royal Caribbean’s Monarch of the Seas. We
will depart on Monday, January 28th and return
Friday morning, February 1st. The itinerary
is: Day 1: depart the port at 4:30, Day
2: Coco Cay, Bahamas, a tendered day trip
to a private island. Day 3: Nassau, Bahamas,
docked from 7:00am until 11:59pm. Day
4: At Sea, Day 5: arrive at Port Canaveral,
7:00am.
The cruise rates, for an ocean view room, are
$370.20 pp for a shared room and $579.20
for a single room. The cruise company is
also offering us a $25.00 ship board credit.
All money paid is fully refundable until November
9, 2012. Optional travel insurance

In previous editions of the
Spray we have mentioned
the undertaking of a review
of our eight EGYC membership
categories and other
membership bylaws. In
this article I would like to
describe what we found and
what you should expect to
see on the ballot for our annual
club meeting in Febru-

ary. First, we found that all eight membership categories
are still valid and serve a good purpose. The
Woman Associate category is already discontinued
and will close when vacated by our current Woman
Associate members. Another item we examined
was our two Non-Resident Member categories. We
found that Non-Resident Class I serves to retain
members who start as full Resident members but
then move outside of Brevard County, while Non-
Resident Class II serves to attract new members
from outside Brevard County for a reduced initiation
fee. So we have recommended keeping these
categories as is.
In terms of bylaws changes, we did find four items
we are recommending to the full membership for
approval.
- Raising the age for automatic Past Commodore
eligibility to the Honorary Membership category
from 65 to 72. This is based on increased life expectancy
data from the U.S. Census Bureau over
the last 30 years.
- In the case of a divorce situation, allowing both
members to retain a membership if desired for an
appropriate fee. This is in keeping with our recent
change recognizing both spouses as equal members.
- Acknowledging the 1/2 initiation fee we offer to
legacy members and extending it to year-round.
This is a significant new member generator, and
is similar to our recent change to extend Summer
Trial memberships to a year round program also.
- Clean-up and simplification of our dues section.
(No material changes.)
These recommendations are intended to bring our
Club a little more up to date, improve our financial
position, and retain/attract members.
In early November, we completed our third Prospective
Member event for the year, and I am
pleased to report that we continue to do better than
planned on new members versus resignations. I
am grateful for having served as your Membership
Committee chairman this year, and I want to thank
our Membership Director Emily Carew for all her
hard work and her warm and generous smile which
go a long way with our members, both new and
old.
I look forward to serving you again in the upcoming
year.

Happy New Year to everyone
from our tennis
staff.
Spring 2013 SCTL
season is starting on
January 15th for men’s
senior team and on January
17th for our ladies
teams. We hope for an-
other good season and hope that at least one
of our teams can win their respective level,
like Volley Girls did last season. In between
seasons might be a best time to restring your
racquet. We will be happy to help you with
that and get you ready for new season.
Clinics for our teams will start on Monday,
January 7th.
Club Singles and Doubles Championships
will be held in January. Singles tournament
will start on Friday, January 18th and final
is on Sunday, January 20th. Doubles tournament
will be the next weekend, January
25-27. If you would like to play please call
the Pro Shop at 777-6118, or email me at
milos77@gmail.com to sign up. If we have
enough people interested to play we will
have two levels of play. I hope to have many
people signed up to play and also incourage
everyone to come out to watch the action.
January is big month for all tennis lovers,
Australian Open will be played in Melbourne.Novak
Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka
will try to defend their titles from
last year and I am sure we will be able to see
some great tennis in two weeks of competition.
We all have our favorites and I hope
that Novak can win again.
Stop by the Pro Shop and check out new
styles of Maui Jim sunglasses and also very
soon we will have a whole new line of Head
racquets with new Graphene technology. I
had the opportunity to try some of the new
frames and they are excellent.

Sabita and I represented the Club at the
USPTA Masters Tournament in Williams Island
Tennis Club in Aventura. That was the
year ending tournament end only the four
best players in each age group were invited
to participate.
I won my semifinal match against Denny
Rager from Ft Myers after a long battle, 4:6
7:6(4) and 10-8 in super tie-break. Unfortunately
I lost my first match of the year
in the final against Andy Lake. He is currently
USTA 35’s National Champion and
beat me pretty convincingly 6:1 6:3. Overall
I am very pleased with my year and I have
finished ranked number one in the USPTA
Grand Prix circuit. I hope that I can repeat
that next season and represent our Club in
the best possible way.
Sabita also played at the tournament and finished
third in her age group. Our club was
the only one that had two pro’s playing at
the tournament.
Tennis Tip
One of the easiest way to improve your game is to improve your footwork. Studies
have shown that the average club player makes four steps in between shots, while the
average pro player makes thirteen steps. That allows them to always be so well prepared
to execute their shots. So, keep your feet moving and make many small adjustment steps
in between shots and fewer bigger steps. More steps will allow you to get in the correct
position and create more space between you and the ball, and that will allow you to have
more control and power on your shots.

12:00 noon - $20.00 pp
Ladies, Dr Clevens is coming to speak to us for
approximately 45 minutes. He will speak about all
the latest cutting edge techniques in laser treatments,
fillers, and facelifts. This will include stem cell facelifts.
Some of these procedures are invasive the others
non-invasive. He will give gift packages to all present.
He will also have many raffle items.
Dr Clevens is one of the most sought after
Board Certified facial plastic surgeons in Brevard.
He will answer questions after the presentation.

One of the many things I would like to accomplish
this year is a greater understanding
and involvement of our members, in the
Women’s Council. The Council serves as a
voice for the women of our club. We can try
to affect changes you would like to see and
arrange avenues for greater social interaction.
Several times, during this year as Chairperson,
I have had someone say to me that they
thought some of the planned events were just
for members of the Council. Each time I am
surprised, as the Council thinks we make it
apparent we want each and everyone of you
to join in our events. If we have not passed
this message, I apologize and hope that going
forward all will know we are here for you.
The Council wants to make sure you know of
our upcoming events. You will find them in
this report and advertisements in the Spray.
The next few months we will host Spa Day
on January 5th at Maxine’s on Highland Ave,
then we depart on a cruise, to the Bahamas,
with 22 of our members on January 28th.
On February 22nd Dr. Clevens will be the
guest speaker at a luncheon. Staring in March
we will try a new format, much like the men’s
“Captain’s Table.” The third Wednesday of
each month we will have a guest speaker and a
buffet lunch. We are calling this day “ Women,
Wine (or whine) and Wednesday.” Please
let us know if you have a topic or speaker you
would like to hear. In January, Bunko returns
on the third Wednesday of each month. We
hope one of your New Year resolutions is to
attend, if not all, at least one of these events.

We have a small group that has started a
duplicate bridge game on Thursday afternoons
from 1:15 pm to about 4:30 pm in
the dining room.
Because of the the nature of duplicate play,
it is necessary that you sign up with a partner.
Also, we must know in advance who
is playing so that travelers and tables can
be set up accordingly. If you wish to play,
please leave your name, partner’s name
and telephone number with the front desk
at the club , by Tuesday Noon of the week
you wish to play.
