Is BOOMING
and Growing Better
All the Time!
It is likely you already know a thing or two about Georgetown,
SC. The city itself, and the Lowcountry that encircles it, is a place
long beloved for its beauty, history, and opportunity. Even as
moss sways sleepily in the trees and a web of waterways quietly ebb
and flow, the whole region fairly vibrates with growth.
Wrapped in ribbons of river and creek, there is little more
beautiful than a bird’s eye view of Georgetown. Founded in
1729, the state’s third oldest port city is extraordinarily lovely
at ground level, too. William D. Morgan, the city’s mayor from
1891 to 1906, had the great foresight to plant hundreds of
oak trees while in office. Added to the untold count of older,
native oaks, the wealth of foliage makes for a patchwork of
broad, shade-soaked streets that grace the city with dignity
and character.
Just before sunrise on September 25, 2013, fire broke out in
the 700 block of Front Street, the very heart of Georgetown’s
famed Historic District. Wooden storefronts and shared attics
fueled a fast and furious blaze that destroyed seven waterfront
buildings, nearly a city block! The nineteenth century buildings
not only housed flourishing businesses, around half-a-dozen
residents made their homes above the restaurants and retail shops.
Thankfully, there was no loss of personal life, but several pets
died in the fire. It was a devastating blow to Downtown.
As is often the case, though, unwelcome catastrophe can give
rise to growth. Most of the displaced retailers moved into other
empty storefronts and today’s Front Street is better – and
busier – than ever!
scmaritimepark.com
The giant hole left by the fire – a perfect bite of land between
the SC Maritime Museum and Sweeties Candy Store - has been
filled with Maritime Park. The Park is a special event and
wedding venue that serves up to 400 guests at a time while
preserving riverfront views and safeguarding the city’s prized
antebellum ambiance.Visit SCMaritimePark.com for a look at
Since then, she has opened not one but four retail entities and
a coffee shop! Open Road Trading Company blends tradition
and classic styles, and Wildflower & Whiskey Clothing carefully
curates elegant ease. Both serve men and women. Bluebird
Vintage and Urban Farmhouse Home & Garden live by side.
One sells high style consigned furniture and vintage accessories
and the other serves up inspiration for updated indoor
and outdoor surroundings marked by calm, familiar comfort,
tradition, and style. And tucked away inside the store, there’s
Urban Brew, a must-stop coffee shop.
Elsewhere, in and around the larger Downtown area, a
commercial renaissance is undeniable. Paula Moland, a veteran
businesswoman with successes in the Charleston market,
recently relocated to Georgetown. She fell in love with “the
little Hallmark town” when she ambled into town on a daytrip
in 2020. “I immediately thought it was just the cutest, little
waterfront,” she said. “I saw available storefronts, did some
research and ultimately decided to move here.”
These and other new venues are joining longstanding favorites
like Doodlebugs Children Finery, Green Bean Consignment,
and the oh-so-elegant pair of Rice Bird gift shops. Whether
the spot’s new or old, the bottom line is there’s considerable
inventory to explore at antique stores, more than a few galleries,
a swanky shoe store, at least one book shop and lots, lots more.
Browsing is every bit as much fun as buying.
Of course, where retail goes, restaurants follow. New options
like SoCo Chop House and SoCo Grille, Taqueria Mariachi,
Between the Antlers and the Purr & Pour Cat Café have taken
their places alongside well-established favorites that include River
Room, Big Tuna and Buzz’s Roost (Ask them what all they
have on tap from Winyah Bay Brewing Company – also
located in Georgetown!) Indigo Mercantile and their stash of
freshly made goods is the perfect place to pack a picnic, especially
since there’s fine wine. And, at Indigo Bakery across the street,
mouthwatering selections deliver both savory and sweet.
As this issue heads to press, an uber-cool and eagerly anticipated
boutique hotel called The George is taking shape at long last!
Joe Keenan, lead developer of the project, had this to say:
“After extensive feasibility work, we selected 615 Front Street as
the perfect location … the growth of the surrounding area and
the incredible tourism throughout Georgetown, Pawleys, Litchfield,
and extending to the Myrtle Beach and Charleston markets have
seen over the last five to seven years has been noteworthy.”

“The George” will be a place visitors will be able to enjoy
the charm Front Street has to offer. They can stay on the
waterfront, enjoy the views - restaurants, shopping,
plantations, beaches, world class golf courses.
Perhaps best of all, guests can arrive
by boat or by car!
When complete, The George will anchor the eastern end of
Front Street and the city’s much-lauded Haborwalk. With
more than fifty rooms and suites, the new landmark will also
offer a full-service restaurant, two bars, waterfront event space,
and an activity lawn for lounging, games, and events. Direct
marina access will serve up opportunities for incoming boaters
to enjoy hotel amenities and for guests to access vessels for fishing,
eco-excursions, and a crazy assortment of waterborne adventures.
Another developing project on the horizon is predicted to have
upwards of a $25 million dollar impact on the local economy!
David and Kathryn Kossove, the power couple who own
Augustus and Carolina on Front Street, are the masterminds
behind a new development where Church Street (Hwy.17)
intersects with Broad. If the puzzle pieces fall into place – and
indications are good – this as-yet-unnamed, marsh front venture
will marry high-end condominiums with an open-air market,
and a recognized “entrance to the city” experience that could
include trolleys moving down and around Broad Street into
the city’s historic heart. Countless possibilities are in the cards!
Is it any wonder city leadership notes an influx of families,
especially of a younger demographic, settling in the city? John
Bullard, Operations and Programs Manager at the Georgetown
County Chamber of Commerce, and his wife, moved here in 2018.
They are a vibrant young couple and he says, “Whether you’re
a foodie, shopaholic or enjoy a night on the town listening to live
music, Georgetown’s got it all. As well, outdoor activities are
endless here when you are surrounded by the beautiful natural
resources we are truly blessed with. Georgetown continues
to thrive and give me reasons proud to call it home.”
Well spoken, John Bullard. Nothing
more need be said.
Tom Yawkey Wildlife Reserve
There’s a healthy slice of Carolina Lowcountry south of Georgetown you must know about.
By local, regional and national standards, its value is too great to calculate. So unique, and
by some measures remote, its pleasures sometime fly below the tourism radar. As a resident
or an aspiring resident, though, there is simply no excuse for not knowing about and being
grateful for this vast Wildlife Reserve and Heritage Preserve.
NATURE & HISTORY
Located at the mouth of Georgetown’s Winyah Bay, The Tom Yawkey
Wildlife Center (YWC) is comprised of three pristine barrier islands – North,
South, and Cat. Neatly explained, that is roughly 31 square miles of maritime
forests and unspoiled marsh, wetlands of all shapes and sizes, beautiful beaches,
longleaf pine woods, and more – along with all the human history you might expect.
The vast and storied property was willed to the SC Department of Natural
Resources in 1976 by the late Thomas A. Yawkey. (Yes. That is the same Tom
Yawkey who owned the Boston Red Sox.) He spent childhood summers here
visiting his uncle and acquired a love of nature and wildlife that would inform
the rest of his life. He inherited the land in 1925 and expanded his real estate
holding by buying out surrounding owners.
Yawkey managed the property during his lifetime using his own set of conservation
practices. When he gifted it to the state in 1976, he stipulated that it be utilized
as a wildlife and waterfowl preserve and research area. The next year, in 1977,
the property was dedicated as a Heritage Preserve under the SC Heritage Trust
Program. Nature and history have rarely come together so beautifully.
Frequent tours
include birding
excursions, history
tours, a photo safari,
plein air painting
opportunities
and more.
Tom Yawley acquired the Red
Sox in 1933 and was the sole
owner for 44 seasons.

.
RESEARCH
The first priority of YWC is managing the property to study and sustain an
environmental wonderland of animals and plants and their habitats. Thirty managed
wetlands provide 3,000 acres of habitat for waterfowl, wading birds and shorebirds.
Fourteen miles of protected beach are home to the federally protected loggerhead
sea turtle. There are more than 7,000 acres of longleaf pine habitat alone, a habitat
nearly lost to the American South. The list of protected flora and fauna is far too
extensive to detail here.
The Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center hosts a busy natural resources research program.
More than 100 research projects have been conducted on the property since the
1980s, and numerous active projects feature participation from an impressive
collection of universities, foundations and laboratories. These projects bring
researchers, educators, land managers, students and the public together.
Venus Flytraps signify Spring is on its way.
OUTREACH AND EDUCATION
For the public, free educational tours intepret the property’s diverse cultural
and natural history. Frequent tours include birding excursions, history tours, a
photo safari, plein air painting opportunities and more. Follow the Tom Yawkey
Wildlife Center on Facebook to stay abreast of current programming. You can
also call (843)546-6814 (or email WhamP@DNR.SC.Gov) to ask questions and
make reservations. This is the only way to visit YWC.
Be assured that making plans to see the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Reserve is worth
every effort. It is, in fact, a stunningly beautiful place and a Palmetto State treasure.
Make the effort and you will return home loving where you live even more than
you did already!
AJAJAS
Are
Everywhere!
AJAJA
IS THE SCIENTIFIC
NAME DEFINING THE
ROSEATE
SPOONBILL.
Dazzling at a distance and rather peculiar up close, plume hunters nearly purged Roseate Spoonbills from the
US in the mid- and late-1800s. Their feathers were fashioned into fans by Native Americans and later used
indiscriminately as ornamentation by early colonists. Happily, in today’s world, the species is recovering!
Sensitive to chilly weather, Spoonbills have always been more common in Florida, Texas, and southwest Louisiana,
but their numbers are growing at quite a clip in
the coastal marshes of SC. This is probably
because of climate change. Whatever the reason,
they are fascinating birds to have around.
It is a joy to witness Spoonbills in action. At
the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Reserve, and farther
north at Huntington Beach State Park, they nest
in colonies on coastal islands and forage in tidal
ponds and marshes. In their elegant pink attire,
they prance about elegantly swinging their heads
side to side, sifting the muck with their wide flat
bills. Not surprisingly, they are the delight of birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers.
There are opportunities at the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center (YWC) to witness these lovely birds in their natural
habitat. Barring unforeseen situations, YWC frequently hosts birding excursions through the property’s various
habitats. To check the availability of these popular guided tours, contact The Center by email at
WhamP@DNR.SC.gov, or by phone at (843)546-6814. Their Facebook
page is generally current, as well, and there is lots there to see and learn!
ROSEATE SPOONBILLS
Roseate Spoonbills are highly social. They feed together and with other wading birds.
The collective noun for spoonbills is BOWL. Keep an eye out wherever you go in our
Lowcountry, and you are likely to see a BOWL of Roseate Spoonbills.
Meet
Mayor
Jayroe!
On the heels of a precedent
setting election, Carol Jayroe
assumed office as Georgetown’s
first female Mayor (and first
Republican Mayor, too!) in
January 2022. Voters agreed
there was no better man for the job than this remarkably busy woman!
A Georgetown native, her reputation and resume was – and is – rock solid.
Mayor Jayroe graduated from Winyah High School, the University
of SC Bankers School and is a Realtor at Peace Sotheby's
International Realty. She brings a wealth of business, civic and
governmental experience to her new position. A well-rounded summary
of her professional life showcases careers in banking and real estate,
involvement with many civic and charitable organizations and
two terms on City Council. She is a past president of the
Georgetown County United Way, Board Member of Good Friends
and the Coastal Community Foundation, past president of Tidelands
Community Hospice, past president of The Bunnelle Foundation, and
Elder at Georgetown Presbyterian Church.
“Well, this is a historic event,” Jayroe said after ballots were
counted and confirmed.“I am very proud to be the first female
major of the historic city of Georgetown. We are beginning a new
chapter in the city, and I intend to represent all citizens and work
very hard for our sweet little city.”
As Mayor, Carol’s goal is to listen carefully to all her constituent’s
concerns, connect in person with community leaders, and work
hand in hand with her fellow Council Members and City and
County Administration to build a strong, vibrant community for
city residents and visitors. She believes in
civility and transparency in public
forums and encourages interested
parties to stay abreast of her
administration’s efforts by attending
regular monthly City Council
meetings and contacting her with
questions and concerns. You can
“Here We AreAgain”
Relish RETRO Cocktails
Mark Twain said “There is no such thing as a new idea. We simply take a lot
of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope.” Spot on, Mr.
Twain. History offers plenty of evidence it is the way of great things – be it food
or fashion – to disappear and reappear farther along on the timeline. As this
article takes shape, the internet is rife with abstract art, macrame and all things
midcentury, and the same principle is holding true for trends behind the bar.
In their 2022 Forecast, Grubhub, a successful online food ordering company
founded back in 2004, shared the educated assessment that dishes and drinks
that fall under the “nostalgia umbrella” are climbing in popularity. In their words:
“We predict a big year for retro cocktails like the Midori Sour and Long Island Iced
Tea but updated for modern tastes with less sugar, fresh-squeezed juices, and more natural ingredients.”
As usual, our favorite Waccamaw Neck restaurants are right on trend as they serve up “old is new
again” flavor profiles on their respective drink menus. Luckily for Litchfield Style readers, Frank’s and Frank’s
Outback, Austin’s, Rustic Table and Bistro 217 agreed to share their unique twists on cocktail recipes for a handful of old favorites.
Pucker Up for a PISCO SOUR
Bistro 217, located in the Downtown Pawleys complex,
shares a delicious concoction called the Pisco Sour. According
to Liquor.com, Chile and Peru bicker over the drink’s origin.
Most accounts tie the drink’s creation to an expat US
bartender, Victor Morris, who is believed to have concocted
the frothy, smooth cocktail at his Lima bar around 1915. The
earthy, sweet and tart cocktail is still worth fighting over.
Ingredients
2 oz. Pisco
1 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
3/4 oz. simple syrup (1:1 water to sugar ratio)
1 egg white
Angostura bitters
In a cocktail shaker, vigorously shake all ingredients
except bitters with ice and half of the spent lime hull. Strain
contents back into your shaker and shake a second time without
ice. Strain into a chilled glass. Dash bitters over the foamy
head of the cocktail.
Choose COSMO
Austin’s Ocean One, Pawleys Island’s only oceanfront
restaurant, crafts a Cosmopolitan that is as delicious as it is classic.
One theory says the drink made its first appearance in 1927
under the expert hand of a Scottish bartender named Harry
MacElhone. According to Wikipedia, another popular theory is
that it was created by Cheryl Cook, the Martini Queen of
South Beach, back in the early 1980s. The flavored vodka in
this Botanical Cosmo elevates it to new heights.
Ingredients
2 oz. Ketel One Peach & Orange Blossom infused Vodka
1/2 oz. Cointreau
1/2 oz. Peach Schnapps
Splash of Cranberry Juice
This one is easy peasy. Shake and strain ingredients into a
well-chilled martini glass and garnish with a juicy slice of fresh
orange. This is one heck of a pretty drink, especially perched
atop Austin’s candy-apple-red bar top.
Go Galactic with a LUNAR FIZZ
The origin of the Lunar Fizz is fuzzy, but it seems reasonable
to think it may have celebrated the first-ever moon landing way
back in 1969. Then again, it may just be a variation on an
old-school Gin Fizz that necessarily features Hendrick’s impossibly
smooth Lunar Gin. Kissed with the French Crème de Violette,
this drink is fruity and fragrant and waiting for you at Rustic Table
in Pawleys Island!
Ingredients
1 1/2 oz Hendricks Lunar Gin
1/2 oz. Crème de Violette
1/2 oz. lemon juice
1/2 oz. simple syrup
Combine all in a cocktail shaker and shake until it reaches the
way-below-zero temperatures of a lunar evening. Just kidding.
Shake about thirty seconds, garnish with a curl of lemon rind, and
flower petals if you choose, then pour and serve! It’s FIZ-elious.
~ TAKE OUT~
“Is HereTo Stay”
Takeout sales soared during the pandemic. As restaurants
closed their doors or operated at partial capacity, hungry
patrons clamored to score their favorite restaurant meals to
enjoy at home. This new way of doing business became a
lifeline – both for restaurateurs and for their customers.
Research shows this represents a shift in the restaurant
world’s business model that probably will not go away.
“We’ve been spoiled by the ease with which we can relish
our favorite restaurant selections at our own dining tables,”
comments one foodie. “Although the restaurants I love most
are back in full swing, sometimes I simply want the ease of
eating at home and eating well.”
In our corner of paradise, a greater variety of takeout is
available in more places than ever before, and the food reflects
the high standards of the eateries we are lucky to count among
our own. Dine-in establishments have learned a whole lot
about preparing food to go in environmentally friendly
packaging that retains the food’s quality and is every bit as
delicious away from the restaurant’s four walls.
Eating at home during the pandemic reminded us there are
still plenty of great reasons (besides social distancing) to order
out. It offers a great excuse to neither cook nor wash dishes.
A readymade meal you know you are going to love is a
relaxing way to end a busy day. And, of course, no one
can make your favorites like your favorite restaurant can.
The bottom line is this: don’t hesitate to call ahead and
place an order to go. You will get the same
delicious food and great service you have
grown to expect, love and
appreciate!
Not So OLD -FASHIONED
At Frank’s & Frank’s Outback, they have recreated a berry
laced version of the ageless Old-Fashioned. Well, sort of. The
talented mixologist behind Frank’s bar created a translation of
the old standby. In this Strawberry and Honey-Infused Iced Tea,
he used brown liquor of a different sort-the South’s own Firefly
Sweet Tea Vodka. Made with all-natural ingredients- including tea
from a plantation just down the road near Charleston-it is brown
liquor, after all. This tasty spin is destined to become a new classic.
Ingredients
Strawberries • Honey
Orange bitters • 2 oz. Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka
Muddle the strawberries and honey (quantities to taste) using a
muddler – or smash them together with a wooden spoon. Once
done, add vodka and shake together vigorously. Strain, pour into
a pretty glass, add a splash of orange bitters and garnish with a
CHARCUTERIE
IS HOT,
HOT, HOT
...yet requires no cooking!
Style 2022 • TheLitchfieldCompany.com
At first glance, Charcuterie is an imposing word. It requires
a moment of pause to consider before you pronounce it,
and then you probably do so with trepidation. Before you
turn the page, though, you should know the appeal of this
historied (and hot again) craze is anything but imposing. A
great charcuterie board can (and does) cross age and budget
boundaries. They can be created at all different price points
and customized for a kid’s party
or a fancy adult affair. For seasonal
celebrations, they are spot on.
First, charcuterie is pronounced
"shar-koo-tuh-ree." Say it
once, and it will roll off the
tongue so easily you will forget
to stumble over the fancy
French spelling. Then you can
move your focus to the magic of it
all. Simply defined, charcuterie
is a French word for a store that
sells cold cooked meats and
describes the products sold in
those stores, e.g., smoked, cured,
and salted meats. Used in a
sentence: “I’m not sure my friends
know what charcuterie means,
yet they order it every time they
see it on a restaurant menu.”
That is a fact. The popularity
of charcuterie has soared in
recent years. A recent article in the industry publication
Progressive Grocer is of the same opinion: "Charcuterie and
the deliciously gorgeous boards used to serve it have
become so popular that Instagram influencers are quitting
their jobs to design colorful charcuterie boards full-time."
Professionals attribute the popularity of creating attentiongrabbing
boards to a few factors. In an interview with Business
Insider, history professor Ken Alaba theorizes that putting
together photogenic charcuterie boards brings together craft
and food cultures, making for a satisfying DIY experience.
Add to that the influence of social media on food culture,
especially during COVID, when everyone’s attention is online.
A search for charcuterie on Instagram yields more than a
thousand hits. Other social
media platforms like
Facebook and TikTok also
boast myriad followers of
the craft of making – and
consuming – a delicious
charcuterie spread. The
possibilities of charcuterie are
as legion as the trend’s
followers. Meats, cheese,
breads and crackers, veggies,
fruits (fresh and dried!), nuts,
pickles, olives, preserves, even
cakes and candies, are all
“on the board.” Is anything
so perfect as prosciutto and
fig jam? Or a fat sweet grape
with gorgonzola? Perhaps a
salty slice of salami and a
palm full of sugared walnuts?
Designing a colorful and
well-curated charcuterie
board is a delight for the senses. It is a perfect meal option
or an appetizer course. It encourages participants to
slow down and savor good food and good company.
More than a few local restaurants have welcomed
charcuterie and you are likely to find tempting options
on the menu wherever you go. Embrace all the hype and
begin a culinary journey that has stood the test of time. If
you are not already, you will quickly find yourself hooked.
Style CHARCUTERIE BOARD
SHOPPING LIST
Here is a checklist to use as a guide. Start with familiar items, a favorite for each person you are
entertaining and build your board from there. Think about textures, color, sweetness, saltiness,
flavor combinations, as well as your presentation.
Meats – Include a variety of meats like salamis, prosciutto,
cold cuts, jerky, pate, smoked salmon, cocktail shrimp.
Cheese – Both hard and soft cheeses. Hard cheese: parmesan,
cheddar, swiss… Cheese sticks or slices. Blue, Gorgonzola, Feta
cheeses. Soft cheese: goat cheese, cream cheese, creamy brie.
Crackers & Bread – Sturdy crackers are important. Add a
multigrain cracker, chips or crisps. Fresh baked breads like
a baguette.
Fruit & Vegetables – Fresh fruit and/or dried fruit. In season
vegetables, pickles and pickled items, roasted red peppers…
any that will go well with dips and cheese.
Olives – A variety, from Pitted Olives Jubilee, Aglio Green Pitted
Olives, Kalamata olives to an olive medley.
Dips & Spreads – Think savory and sweet… marmalade, jams
and jellies, honey, hummus, guacamole, ranch, mustards, cheese
dips, tapenade, etc.
Nuts – Almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts, pecans, walnuts.
Sprinkle around the board, fill in any open areas or pour them
in small bowls.
Wine Pairing - Pinot Noir. Italian table wine like a Sangiovese
or Chianti Classico. Pinot Grigio. Sauvignon Blanc. Chenin
Blanc. Riesling. Champagne or Prosecco.

Pawleys Island Destination Bracelets
For over three centuries, Pawleys Island has been a place where the weary go to be rejuvenated.
As one of the oldest summer resorts on the East coast, the history and lore of this narrow
slice of heaven has become legendary. The Pawleys Island Destination Bracelets TM are a tribute
in precious metals to the shoeless, carefree, laidback spirit that beckons. The stylized "P" flows
into a fishing hook, symbolizing the "Hook" that Pawleys has on the hearts of many. It
grasps the "I", which is reminiscent of an old kedge anchor, and echoes a heritage born of
the sea. The two 14 karat gold wrap accents represent the Atlantic and the ICW, and
between these, "arrogantly shabby" Pawleys Island thrives. The Pawleys Island Destination
Bracelets TM are a symbolic treasure, forged with a community spirit.
Caring for OUR COMMUNITY
aLL4PAWS
ANIMAL
RESCUE
708 Petigru Drive
Pawleys Island
(843) 237-7297
Hundreds if not thousands
will attest that All4Paws is
a place where miracles
happen. The non-profit
launched in June of 2011
with the objective of saving
as many homeless, abandoned,
and threatened dogs and cats
as possible. A little more
than ten years later, they have
found forever homes for more
than 8,000 dogs and cats
– many little more than a
breath away from being
euthanized. They have also helped rescue and transfer another
6,600 animals to other shelters.
From the start, All4Paws clearly filled an important need.
They quickly outgrew their first home while assembling a veritable
army of donors and volunteers. With the support of that army,
they moved to their current home on Petigru in 2014. The
new facility was renovated to include raised Mason dog
kennels, a ductless AC system that prevents disease transmission,
and secure outdoor exercise areas, as well as spaces and therapies
for animals with special needs. They stay so busy, there is even
a vet on staff.
Success stories are a daily
affair, so it would be easy to let
this bit of editorial become a love
story about All4Paws and its
adorable tenant population. But
for those who really want to know
about this valued community
resource, there’s lots of other
important information.
All4Paws strives to be good
stewards of the support they receive.
Being effective, efficient, and transparent is a guiding principle.
And they do not simply adopt out pets. They supply pet food
to needy families, support church and school
programs about pet ownership, and provide
low-cost and no-cost spay/neuter services.
They participated in the closing of four
puppy mills and helped
facilitate the conversion
of some municipal
shelters to no-kill
facilities. The list
goes on.
Late in 2021, All4Paws was recognized by SC’s Secretary
of State as an Angel Charity. They earned the recognition by
being an organization that utilized 89% of its budget for its
stated charitable purpose. A tremendous and active volunteer
base helped seal the deal. Angel Charities are selected for
their fiscal responsibility,
work in the community and
use of volunteer support.
All4Paws scores on all fronts.
If you are looking to adopt
a pet, there is no better
place to do it. (Follow the
Facebook page for a furry
face to fall in love with!) If
you are looking for a nonprofit
to support, there are
several ways to direct your
philanthropy. They welcome new volunteers. There is so much
more to know, you simply must go to their website, All4Paws.org,
Autism & Intellectual Disability Services
5276 Highway 17 Business, Murrells Inlet
(843) 449-0554
SOS Care is a much-loved non-profit organization
headquartered in Murrells Inlet, SC that offers programs and
services to autistic individuals and others with intellectual
disabilities. Helping this underserved segment of the population
survive and thrive is an endeavor that profoundly changes lives.
There is an increased prevalence of autism and other
developmental disabilities in today’s world. These issues are
touching larger numbers of people making it high time to pay
closer attention. SOS seeks to do that and also seeks to be an
example to other nonprofits like their own.
Imagine the day on which a family gets the news a child they love
has been diagnosed with a
life-altering disability. In this
life situation, anxiety quickly
becomes a constant companion.
Affected families wonder how
their loved one will grow up
and how they will function as
they do. Sadly, there are few
options for neurodiverse
children as they age into adults.
Addressing the needs of the
neurodiverse population is no
easy task. From social integration
SOS Care’s Job Coaching lead
Dan to gainful employment.
to employment issues, the approach must be multi-pronged. SOS
is rising to the challenge by providing a wide variety of programs
that address all the puzzle pieces. Board-certified medical professionals
offer therapy to improve important social, communication
and learning skills.
Social Skills Clubs teach, and then practice, in small, structured
groups that facilitate integration into the community. Independent
Living Clubs, marked by training and support, enable participants to
be more self-reliant. Employment assistance is another major service.
Along the way, lives are changed. Neurodiverse people end up with
friends of their own, jobs of their own and dreams of their own. Their
families end up with peace of mind. Both outcomes are priceless.
“To see this change when people thought it couldn’t happen …
to see how happy they are and how they are thriving … It is
amazing to watch, says one very active donor and former employee
in a moving 8-minute video under About Us on the SOS home
page. Take the time to go there and watch. It is moving.
SOS currently serves more than 1200 families and is at the ready
to help more. Donations are wildly appreciated, and volunteers are
always needed for a host of projects. Please learn more about this
worthwhile organization and the growing population of people
they help at SOSCareSC.org.
OAKTREE FARM
There is a severe lack of safe and sustainable housing for
neuro-diverse individuals, and the need is growing. SOS has
an answer in Oak Tree Farm. When it comes to fruition, Oak
Tree Farm will provide a plan, a purpose, and a way to thrive
to 150 adults with disabilities.
The first of its kind, this affordable housing community is
being specially designed for individuals with autism and other
intellectual disabilities. This is a segment of society extremely
vulnerable to homelessness and poverty, and the need is great.
Oak Tree Farm will eventually provide access to transportation,
life skills training, an amenities center, a swimming pool, on-site
laundry facilities, and more. A few first residents are already
in place in a transitional home and are doing well. Along with
forty-eight other individuals, they will move into Phase One
of the new facility by the end of 2022.
SOS has high hopes this neighborhood concept will serve as
an example throughout SC and beyond! The need for donations
is keen as they approach this major milestone. There are links
for giving – to SOS and/or Oak Tree Farm – at SOSCareSC.org.
If you agree that empowering those with disabilities is vitally
important to the larger community, perhaps you will consider
supporting them with your annual giving, as well. Feel free to
call and ask questions at 843.449.0554. They are happy to
tell you all about their dreams and successes!
DRAMA & LITERATURE
In our slice of Lowcountry, there is no scarcity of
opportunities as regards literature and drama. As elsewhere
in this article, we only have space to hit the proverbial high spots.
CLASS, an acronym for Citizens Learning About
Special Subjects, is a dynamic organization that manages a
whole host of special excursions, retreats, concerts, festivals
and unique art courses and workshops. Twice monthly paint-ins
and stained-glass classes, an exceedingly popular Women’s
Retreat and Pontoon Boat Charters that explore the area’s
very rich history are just the beginning.
CLASS also masterminds the wildly popular Moveable
Feast series. Simply explained, Moveable Feasts feature
local, regional, and national authors at area restaurants.
And, while there is certainly nothing inferior about the
HISTORY
Surely no one will disagree this category could be – and
has been – the subject of entire books. Georgetown County
rivals any region in the country for a history that is deep,
wide, and far-reaching. The city of Georgetown has four
museums within walking distance of each other. Old plantations
like Brookgreen Gardens, Hobcaw Barony, Hopsewee
and Hampton Plantation highlight programming that
interprets and explains our area’s crazy rich store of antiquity.
In closing, be assured arts and culture inspires and connects
residents and visitors in a host of ways. Music, theatre, and the
visual arts entertain and engage us aesthetically. Public festivals
and celebrations of history give participants a sense of
community and a unique cultural identity. Art transforms
individuals in galleries large and small. Quality-of-life benefits
are off the charts and makes life here sweeter than anywhere.
from all over the US and Canada who are searching for the same thing: stunning coastal
scenery devoid of high-rise hotels and oceanfront congestion.
When it comes to the beach communities that make up the Hammock Coast -
southern Garden City, Murrells Inlet, Litchfield Beach, Pawleys Island and
DeBordieu Colony just north of historic Georgetown – three words often come to mind:
REST. RELAXATION. REJUVENATION.
How else to describe a hammock, after all? (And remember the famous handmade rope
hammock was first marketed here several decades ago!)
For generations, water has shaped SC’s Hammock Coast – be it rivers and marshes or
Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It’s important historically and culturally, and, today,
it’s what defines Georgetown County as one of America’s premier vacation spots.
Surfers ride the waves. Kayakers explore the tidal creeks. Fishermen and boaters reel in
stories along the rivers. And countless others soak up the sun on pristine beaches. Our
unspoiled and uncrowded spots bring visitors throughout the year.
Our beaches are perfect for taking away the
cares of everyday life. Southern Living, in fact, says
three of SC’s best beaches are found on the Hammock Coast, and TripAdvisor named
Litchfield Beach, with its consistent five-star reviews, as one of the Top 10 beaches in
America. Most recently, U.S. News & World Report named Pawleys Island, Litchfield
Beach and Huntington Beach State Park to its list of the Top 12 beaches in SC, saying
the area is "still largely devoid of commercialism" and "remote in feel."
Tens of thousands of acres of protected land (the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center,
Hobcaw Barony, Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park, to name a
few) have helped Georgetown County and the Hammock Coast keep its charming
feel of still being remote – despite being between Myrtle Beach and Charleston.
It’s little wonder, then, that vacationers and new residents alike have embraced
SC’s Hammock Coast and its sorbet-colored evening skies and inviting communities.
Christ the King-Grace Church is a loving community of
people from the Waccamaw Neck. It is part of the Anglican
Diocese of SC and is a member of the Anglican Church of
North America.
Despite its relative youth – the church was founded in 2014
- Christ the King-Grace’s welcoming
congregation has deep Lowcountry roots,
and remnants of a rich history can be
found on the church campus located on
Highway 17 in Pawleys Island.
One of the buildings on campus was
originally a two-room schoolhouse located
farther north, near Pawleys’ current North
Causeway. Dubbed as the Waverly Mills
School, it was built in 1932 by Joshua
John Ward. Captain Josh, as he was known,
outfitted the facility with a wood stove and two outhouses. His
wife, Marie, taught about thirty students in seven grades.
As an interesting aside, Captain Josh was also the architect of the
original Pawleys Island rope hammock
for which our fair island home has
become famous. In the late 1800s,
in his work as a riverboat captain,
he became frustrated with the hot
and uncomfortable grass mattresses
used on the river. So, he engineered
a hammock from cotton rope, and
history was made.
But back to church … When the Waverly Mills School closed
in 1947, the property (along with an adjacent “Community
House”) was passed to All Saints Church and converted to a
parish house, Sunday school and reception hall. It was eventually
adapted to suit the needs of a retail store and finally became the
Community House Restaurant, an elegant eatery that was quite
popular for years.
Many of the building’s details remain. Much of the old floor
was saved. Salvaged doors have been hung in the office area to
maintain a period look, and the old wainscoting and beadboard
ceiling was preserved.
Christ the King-Grace is known today for a warm and inclusive
congregation with active ministries that focus on becoming
disciples of Jesus through student, children and family ministries,
Bible studies, 2:42 groups, and more. Lots of special events
provide a wealth of opportunities for nurturing a sense of
community. It’s the perfect place for newcomers and old-timers
alike. There is more to tell than space to share it here, so please
check out details on their website or their Facebook page!
