I
have often written in articles or mentioned in classes and sermons how
much I love harvest season, especially in Northern Illinois. One of my
most cherished rituals is to go for a drive in the country on a cool, crisp
fall day when the farmers are bringing in the crops. The sight of a combine
off-loading its bounty of corn or beans is truly a spiritual experience for me
and is the reason that Thanksgiving is my favorite family holiday.
While my affinity for autumn probably won’t change, there is something in
me this year that longs for spring—which seems agonizingly delayed this
year. As I write this article, we have finally experienced a few warm days in a
row, so I am hopeful that the tide is finally turning. I’m pretty sure that the
yearning I’m feeling in my soul for spring to finally take hold has a lot to do
with COVID fatigue. In some ways these last two years have felt like one long
winter of suffering through cabin fever and seasonal affective disorder.
One of the most welcome signs that spring is finally here occurred on Easter
Sunday. The Sanctuary and Chapel were full enough at each of our four
services that it felt like church again! The music was awesome, the flowers
were beautiful, and best of all, we reunited with people who had not been
able to attend for two years. If you were here, thank you for coming, it was
great to see you! If you were not able to attend, I hope you were in a church
somewhere with your friends and family and felt the same joy we did.
Though we often think of Easter as a one-off Sunday, the Church has always
talked about and celebrated the Season after Easter as a festival that lasts 50
days and culminates on Pentecost Sunday. Coinciding with those 50 days,
we are beginning a five-week worship series throughout the month of May
that celebrates the vibrant beauty of spring as creation reawakens. It is my
prayer that we will immerse ourselves—as individuals and as a church—in the
promise and hope of the resurrection as it unfolds around us. I discovered
years ago that living with joy is a choice we make. We can choose to look at
the world with despair and dread or we can choose to claim the good news
that for followers of Jesus Christ—because of Easter—life, not death will
always have the final word.
continued
continued from page 1
Friends, I invite you to a holy and joyous spring. Go for a walk and look for
those first shoots of the flowers that are emerging. Look for the good in
every situation and circumstance. Believe that something new and exciting is
happening in your life, your community and in our church. If we do this, we will
become Easter People, people whose joy cannot be contained and whose hope
cannot be defeated. Thanks be to God.
MISSIONS | Growing Hope Globally
It is almost time for our farmer partners to begin planting! That makes it
time for us to show our support for them and this highly effective Christian
response to hunger.
First-world farmers understand the difference that small
changes in water conservation, grain storage, and seed
selection can make in crop yields. Third-world farmers
may need education; they may need small but unattainable
investment capital; they may need help developing a community cooperative.
Whatever it is, Christian Relief agencies are there to offer appropriate
assistance using local development partners.
The results of climate-responsive, community-led, sustainable agricultural
programs are many, including:
• Healthier families that can stay together so men don’t have to travel or
emigrate for work
• More children in school because families can pay fees, dress them and
afford to let them attend
• Available clean water and sanitary facilities
• Community seed storage and cooperatives
• Improved status for women and girls as they take leadership roles
• Better stewardship of land in the face of climate change
Your donations help provide all of this and more. At the end of the day, know
that Growing Hope Globally vets every program and only selects those that
meet its best practice standards, thereby ensuring that every time our Two
Rivers-Barrington Growing project gives $55, another person escapes
poverty for life.
MISSIONS | Calling all Gardeners!
It will soon be time to begin planting our Congregational Garden. Seedlings are
starting at Horchers Florist and Greenhouses and we will soon be laying out
the irrigation. From mid-May to the end of June, we’ll need help planting seeds,
seedlings, and the ever-present tomato cages! Spend contemplative time with
us in June and July helping keep the weeds down. Join us on weekday mornings
in August and September for the harvest.
FISH Food Pantry reports that, after declining last year due to increased
support, food pantry visits have increased steadily since January. The fresh
vegetables that we provide are the most nutritious, best tasting available and
are well-received by the families and seniors they serve.
It takes many hands and we’re asking for yours! If you can spend a few
hours a week in the garden, any day, any time, reach out to Bill West at
(847) 323-0019 or wlwest@att.net or fill out an interest form at
alimentar a nuestros vecinos cada año. Todos los miembros de la iglesia siempre
están invitados a ayudar – con la plantación en junio, desyerbar en julio y agosto, y
Youth Ministry Team
It is harder than ever to navigate life as an adolescent. Our youth often experience
tremendous pressure to fit in, to succeed, and sometimes to resist joining in actions and
behaviors they will later regret. Having adults who care about them and who are willing
to provide a listening ear and compassionate presence is essential to an effective Youth
Ministry Team.
companionship are all that is required to
Monday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. through Zoom
All are invited to join in reading and discussing American Baby; A Mother, A
Child, and the Shadow History of Adoption by Gabrielle Glasser.
“The shocking truth about postwar adoption in America, told through the
bittersweet story of one teenager, the son she was forced to relinquish, and
their search to find each other.” (From the NY Times; Notable Books).
Gabrielle Glaser dramatically demonstrates the power of the expectations and
institutions that Margaret faced. Margaret went on to marry and raise a large
family with David’s father, but she never stopped longing for and worrying
about her firstborn. She didn’t know he spent the first years of his life living
just a few blocks away from her; as he grew, he wondered about where he
came from and why he was given up. Their tale--one they share with millions
of Americans--is one of loss, love, and the search for identity.
is calling us to be in times of loss, grief and massive disruption. What would be
possible if we tend to the needs of our communities in small yet radical ways,
as Jesus did in Luke 13?
Retiro Mujeres Metodista Norte IL
Del 23 al 25 de septiembre
Reserve la fecha para nuestra 34º retiro de mujeres. Después de dos años de
descanso, será maravilloso estar juntas para el refresco espiritual. Únase a
nosotras mientras nos reconectamos y crecemos en la fe.
It’s never too soon to start planning for our 88th Annual Sale!
As you finally pack away those winter clothes or finish your “spring
cleaning,” just remember there will be another Rummage Sale, October 7
and 8! So, if you’re a person who likes lists, let us help you out!
1. Put aside those gently-worn winter items and any of your other treasures
for the sale. Let your friends and neighbors know as well. Drop-offs will
begin Sunday, Oct. 2 and continue through noon on Wed., Oct. 5.
2. Consider setting some time aside to come and help--it’s a great way to
meet new friends and it’s always fun to see what you can find! We will be
setting up for the sale beginning Sat., Oct. 1 (limited set-up that day) and
continuing through Thursday, Oct. 6. If you haven’t joined in the fun of
this project, now is the time to start!!
3. Marvel at the fact that donations of merchandise and time have made
it possible for us to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to very
grateful organizations in the past 87 years.
4. If you need more information, contact Sydney Whitley, sparkerwhitley@
gmail.com or Linda Osikowicz, Lmosikowicz@comcast.net, to see how
you might use your passion to be part of this historic service project.
Mark your calendar and plan to bring a friend!!
New this year: We are not accepting furniture. We continue to only sell
children’s books and DVD’s (no adult books, DVDs, CD’s), no VHS tapes,
electronics, or magazines.
