76 3. Benign and Borderline Tumors
• Chondroid syringoma often forms a discrete, firm nodule
in the breast and, therefore, clinically and radiologically
resembles a fibroadenoma.
• Most tumors are small and may be up to 2 cm in size. They
are easily managed by local resection.
• This tumor is often confused with breast cancer clinically,
radiologically, and pathologically.
Cytomorphologic Characteristics
(Figures 3.22 and 3.23)
• Hypercellular smears
• Biphasic appearance with cohesive epithelial fragments,
stromal mesenchymal tissue, and myoepithelial cells
• Prominent chondromyxoid stroma
• Often stellatelike arrangement of the epithelial cells
Figure 3.22. Chondroid syringoma. A biphasic population of
epithelial fragments and stromal tissue is seen. Cytomorphologic
distinction from a fibroadenoma could be difficult if the physical
findings in the patient are not known. (Smear, Papanicolaou.)
