Figure 3.8. Fibroadenoma. The presence of abundant mucin is an

uncommon finding in this tumor and may create diagnostic confusion

with colloid carcinoma. However, the lack of overt malignant

epithelial characteristics and the presence of abundant myoepithelial

cells exclude carcinoma. In these cases the source of mucin is

thought to be either epithelial mucin from dilated glandular lumens

or mucinous change of the stromal matrix. (Smear, Papanicolaou.)
