132 4. Primary Malignant Tumors
Figure 4.50. Sweat gland carcinoma (malignant nodular hidradenoma).
A higher magnification of cohesive epithelial fragments displays
clear cytoplasm, uniform round nuclei, and well-defined
polygonal cytoplasmic borders. These tumors have a low-grade morphology
on fine-needle aspiration and can be quite challenging if
adequate information of the physical findings is not available to the
cytopathologist. (Smear, Diff-Quik.)
Sarcomas of the Breast
Sarcomas of the breast comprise a variety of types and are
rare, accounting for not more than 1% of all primary breast
neoplasms. The sarcomas include angiosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma,
stromal sarcoma, osteosarcoma, and liposarcoma. The
clinical presentations of these entities are often variable. The
following is a brief description of some of the more common
primary sarcomas of the breast.
Angiosarcoma
Clinical Features
• Angiosarcomas of the breast are rare entities, comprising
less than 0.05% of all primary malignancies of the breast.
