110 4. Primary Malignant Tumors
Figure 4.29. Colloid carcinoma. An unusual feature of this tumor
is the presence of a prominent tangled mass of fine capillaries.
Abundant mucin and isolated tumor cells are seen in the background
as well. (Smear, Diff-Quik.).
Tubular Carcinoma
Clinical Features
• This is a well-differentiated subtype of ductal carcinoma, is
low grade, and has a distinctly better prognosis.
• The incidence is low, ranging from 1% to 2%.
• The average age at diagnosis is 50 years.
• Cells are commonly multicentric, often bilateral.
• The majority of the tumors are not palpable.
• Mammographically, tumors have an ill-defined, spiculated
appearance, similar to a radial scar.
• This type is more commonly seen as a component of invasive
ductal carcinoma NOS.
Cytomorphologic Characteristics (Figures 4.30 to 4.33)
• Tumors are composed entirely of complex cords and
tubular structures (>75%).
• Cellularity is variable.
