AUGUST 2022
SKERRYVORE :: USA Tour - see weblink below
for details. Back on the remote Scottish island of
Tiree in 2005, the raw but contemporary trad
quartet that formed Skerryvore could have only
dreamed that over the next decade they would
become a multi-award winning act that was
performing in over 25 countries worldwide and
featured as ambassadors for their country in an
International advertising campaign for Visit
Scotland. From those traditional roots the band
have developed both in size and sound to create
a unique fusion of their traditional music and
songs with the urban sounds of rock, pop and
funk. The band’s ability to fuse traditional
Scottish music and rhythms with a range of
other genres is a trademark of their distinctive,
high energy sound.
15 MAY
DEAN OWENS with JIM MAVING :: At Green
Note, London. A musical polymath, a restless
troubadour searching for that place where the
twin motherlodes of home and muse meet, Dean
combines the unfettered enthusiasm of early
rock ‘n’ roll with the sympathetic delivery of
folk’s best storytellers.
25 MAY
KRIS DREVER with RACHEL BAIMAN :: At
Kings Place, London. 7.30pm. Drever’s voice and
guitar is a part of the backbone of today’s
contemporary roots and folk scene. Hugely
admired as a solo artist, collaborator, and
member of folk superstars Lau, he is a
phenomenal and prolific artist.
10 JUNE
FATHERSON :: At Islington Assembly Hall,
London. Glaswegian three-piece FATHERSON
have announced their first album in three years,
“Normal Fears” and a full UK tour this coming
May. Back, but not as you know them, “Normal
Fears” is a lush lesson in letting go. Gorgeous,
groove-led singalongs steeped in electronics find
the band in a playful mode, putting break-ups,
old ways of working and everyday worries
behind them to start afresh, sunny side up.
www.facebook.com/fathersonband
16 SEPTEMBER
MURDO MITCHELL :: At St Pancras Old
Church, London. Murdo Mitchell’s smooth and
haunting vocals move listeners through the
aching emotional experience of loss and
heartbreak, delving into themes of broken trust
and lost promises embodied by a dark,
captivating melody. ‘Ghosts’ delivers a painful
coming of age rhetoric set to a powerful,
THE SUN RA ARKESTRA :: At Summerhall,
Edinburgh. 7.30pm. Sun Ra was one of the
greatest and least known jazz artists of the last
four decades, whose influence on diverse
musicians is little known to the general public. A
pianist and band leader, his style ranged from
retro swing to avant free, and often in the same
piece.
Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO)
present ..... TALES OF THE TRIBE featuring
Phil Cunningham, Julie Fowlis, John
McCusker, Michael McGoldrick with music
by Tommy Smith :: At The Queen’s Hall,
Edinburgh. 7.30pm. A companion piece to
Tommy Smith’s legendary Beasts of Scotland,
but inspired by ancient Scottish folk melodies
and folklore, Tales of the Tribe magnifies and
reveals creatures of mythic proportion and
explores Scotland’s soul through music and
through the poetry of Meg Bateman, Christine
De Luca, Peter MacKay and Tom Pow. From tales
of dragons to vampiric ghosts, there is
something for everyone to get their teeth into in
SNJO’s new Tales of the Tribe.
MIDNIGHT RUN with special guest HAILEY
BEAVIS :: At Traverse Theatre 10 Cambridge
Street, Edinburgh. 8-10.30pm. £15/£12. Seth
Mulder & Midnight Run were formed in early
2015. Comprising young like-minded musicians,
all of whom are graduates of various college
music programs, the band has spent the last 5-
plus years honing its high-energy act of blazin’
solos, tight harmonies, and questionable jokes,
mostly as long-standing resident performers at
the Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery in
Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
www.soundhouse.org.uk/events/list/
28 MAY
DJANGO DJANGO :: At The Mash House,
Edinburgh. Back in the old world at the start of
2020, our psychedelic punk heroes The Lovely
Eggs were primed to release their new album ‘I
Am Moron’ – their greatest work yet, overflowing
with political venom and fresh ideas, set
to a gloriously independent noise. Then, of
course, the pandemic happened. The Lovely
Eggs pushed ahead, and the album came out to
critical-acclaim and indie chart-topping status,
but their plans to tour it far and wide were
obviously scuppered. At first, their UK tour was
rescheduled to just two months later, thinking
there’s no way the pandemic could last more
than a few weeks…. Fast forward a year, their
UK tour has been rebooked independently by the
band at least five times and The Lovely Eggs are
still yet to play the new album live, but new tour
dates are now on sale for 2022.
DJANGO DJANGO :: At Stereo, Glasgow. Back
in the old world at the start of 2020, our
psychedelic punk heroes The Lovely Eggs were
primed to release their new album ‘I Am
Moron’ – their greatest work yet, over-flowing
with political venom and fresh ideas, set to a
gloriously independent noise. Then, of course,
the pandemic happened. The Lovely Eggs
pushed ahead, and the album came out to
critical-acclaim and indie chart-topping status,
but their plans to tour it far and wide were
obviously scuppered. At first, their UK tour was
rescheduled to just two months later, thinking
there’s no way the pandemic could last more
than a few weeks…. Fast forward a year, their
UK tour has been rebooked independently by the
band at least five times and The Lovely Eggs are
still yet to play the new album live, but new tour
and explore
Scotland's soul
through music and
poetry ...
soundtrack, the
multi-milliondollar
grossing Brave. Smith has also woven music by Phil Cunningham
and Michael McGoldrick into the piece.
“I wanted to present these tales in a way that made strong use of
Scotland’s musical heritage as well as the narratives to present the
characters and creatures realistically while appealing to families and
lovers of traditional music and big band jazz alike,” Smith adds.
Having worked extensively with Scotland’s first makar, the late Edwin
Morgan and Morgan’s successor, Liz Lochhead, Smith has experience in
merging music and poetry. His Beasts of Scotland commission for
Glasgow Jazz Festival in 1996 received wide acclaim and a later project
with Morgan’s work, Planet Wave was successfully presented with the
Scottish National Jazz Orchestra in 2020.
Smith also has a track record of working with traditional music. His solo
saxophone concerts draw on the songs of Robert Burns and the Gaelic
psalm singing tradition which he has experienced first-hand during
numerous family visits to the Isle of Lewis.
“The traditional musicians we’re working with are among the leaders in
their field,” says Smith. “They are incredibly skilful, and we’ll be
highlighting their skills and spontaneity on accordion, whistle, fiddle,
flute and more to create a natural bond between traditional music and
jazz.”
Julie Fowlis said: “I’ve always had a fascination for creatures of the
otherworld. These characters and belief systems reveal a lot about our
past and those who have gone before. The Gaelic songs concerned with
the supernatural so often have outstanding melodies and stories, and so
it’s no wonder they have lasted the test of time. It’s an absolute
pleasure to create a programme of music with Tommy, the SNJO and
my old friends Phil, Mike and Megan and I’m really excited to bring this
project to the stage."
THE STAMPING GROUND :: At Eden Court
Theatre, Bishops Road, Inverness. IV3 5SA. The
Stamping Ground is a new musical, featuring the
songs of Runrig, about love, life and the land.
It’s the hottest summer in years and the
villagers are sweltering. The heart of their
community, the local pub, is for sale and
tensions are rising about the future of this place
they call home. Newly returned together-forever
couple Euan and Annie find themselves lost in
this once familiar place, now filled with more
tourists than residents, as they navigate a new
life. Meanwhile, their disoriented teenage
daughter takes a shine to a local activist, much
to her overprotective dad’s disapproval, and
Euan’s mother's life is upturned when an old
flame returns home. As relationships ignite and
smoulder, the heartbeat of the land keeps
beating as the villagers try to band together
against the odds.
SKERRYVORE (Sold Out) :: At Orkney Folk
Festival, Orkney. Since 2005, Skerryvore have
brought their performances to audiences across
the globe, from their early days in Scottish West
Coast halls and bars, to Festival crowds in USA,
Canada, Australia and throughout the UK and
Europe. Picking up Scottish traditional music’s
‘Live Act of the Year’ twice on the way – in 2011
and again in 2016 – the band’s wide range of
influences and talent produce a musically
expansive, high energy set that excites and
captivates audiences. With a mix of fiddle,
accordions, pipes and whistles, alongside guitar
and vocals, underpinned by driving bass, drums
and keys, Skerryvore represent the best in
contemporary Scottish traditional music. Their 6
studio albums demonstrate the wide range of
influences the individual musicians bring to the
mix – a unique fusion of folk, trad, rock and
Americana, with even some jazz in there!
THE BUDAPEST CAFÉ ORCHESTRA :: At The
Swallow Theatre, Moss Park, Ravenstone,
Whithorn, DG8 8DR. 10th @ 7.30pm / 11th @
5pm. Tickets £18. The Budapest Café Orchestra
play a blistering barrage of traditional folk and
gypsy-flavoured music from across the Balkans
and Eastern Europe, Klezmer laments, Romanian
Doinas, Hungarian Czardas and their own unique
re-imaginings of some of the biggest tunes ever
written by the classical greats. A small, but
impeccably formed, orchestra of just four
players, the BCO combines violin, guitar,
accordion, double bass, saz & balalaika to
dazzling effect, creating an awesome aural
alchemy normally only characteristic of far
bigger ensembles. “Not so much a band name as
a whole genre of its own, Budapest Café
Orchestra embraces an encyclopaedia of music
and mischief.” The Scotsman
THE LOVELY EGGS :: At The Cluny, Newcastle.
Back in the old world at the start of 2020, our
psychedelic punk heroes The Lovely Eggs were
primed to release their new album ‘I Am
Moron’ – their greatest work yet, over-flowing
with political venom and fresh ideas, set to a
gloriously independent noise. Then, of course,
the pandemic happened. The Lovely Eggs
pushed ahead, and the album came out to
critical-acclaim and indie chart-topping status,
but their plans to tour it far and wide were
obviously scuppered. At first, their UK tour was
rescheduled to just two months later, thinking
there’s no way the pandemic could last more
than a few weeks…. Fast forward a year, their
UK tour has been rebooked independently by the
band at least five times and The Lovely Eggs are
still yet to play the new album live, but new tour
dates are now on sale for 2022.
