WELCOME
PARENTS, GUESTS, AND MUSIC EDUCATORS
Congratulations to the students of the Tennessee All-State Ensembles and
their family members. We are so excited to be back in-person after a twoyear
hiatus during the height of the pandemic. Many of the students you
will be hearing during the All-State Concerts are participating in a Tennessee
All-State Ensemble for the first time. This is a unique experience that these
students will carry with them for the rest of their lives. These young people
represent the future leaders in their communities and life-long advocates for
music and the arts.
The Tennessee All-State students represent the best musicians from across
the state. They have rehearsed and practiced for years to get to this place in
their musical journeys. The teachers and parents of these students are well
aware most of these students excel in more than just music; these students
are strong academically, athletically, and are leaders within their schools.
What you see on stage represents the finest music instruction in our
great state. Hundreds of music educators, supported by their school
administration, have spent countless hours in preparation and organization
to provide the best possible musical experiences in Tennessee. In addition
to the dedicated music educators, our TMEA Board of Directors, Regional
Leaders, Conference Managers, and Project Chairs have worked tirelessly to
help make this a spectacular event.
To all of the families of these students, I would like to thank you for
all you have already done to encourage your child’s musical pursuits. I
also want to thank all of the music teachers for nurturing and investing
in their music students from elementary through high school. There is
no way to measure the impact you have had on these students. To the
students that are performing in our first live Tennessee All-State Ensemble
Performances in two years, thank you for your dedication and your
perseverance throughout these challenging times. Please take a moment
to thank your parents and your teachers for all they have done for you
to help you become successful. Congratulations once again, All-State
musicians, on your present and future achievements.
with faculty soloists, chamber ensembles, and guest artists in recital. Other rewarding
engagements included volunteering with the Jackson (Tennessee) Symphony Orchestra’s
integrative medicine and outreach program, serving as musical director for productions
by the University of Tennessee at Martin’s Vanguard Theater and the local community’s Masquerade Theater, and
working as a church musician for over thirty years.
In demand as a collaborative pianist in the Middle Tennessee area, Mrs. Easley accompanies the Nashville Chamber
Andrew Crane, Conductor
Dr. Andrew Crane joined the Brigham Young University faculty in 2015 where his main
duties include conducting the Brigham Young University Singers and teaching courses
in the graduate conducting curriculum. Prior to this appointment, he served for four
years as Director of Choral Activities at East Carolina University, and six years in the
same position at California State University, San Bernardino. He is also the former
choral director at Provo High School.
Choirs under his direction have appeared by invitation at multiple state, regional,
and national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, National
Association for Music Education, and National Collegiate Choral Organization. Recent
examples include the 2019 ACDA national conference in Kansas City, the 2020 Utah
Music Educators Association conference in St. George, and the 2020 Western Division
ACDA conference in Salt Lake City.
Dr. Crane is active as a conductor of honor choirs, clinician, adjudicator and presenter. He currently serves as Past
President of Utah ACDA, and he recently completed a four-year term on the national ACDA Standing Committee for
Composition Initiatives. In addition, Crane curates a choral series under his name through Walton Music. He and his
wife Casandria (also a BYU alumna) reside in American Fork, Utah, and are the parents of four children.
Crane received a B.M. in Choral Music Education and an M.M. in Choral Conducting from Brigham Young University
and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University.
Tyler Merideth, Collaborative Pianist
Tyler Merideth earned both a B.M. cum laude in Church Music and a M.M. in Music Education
from Belmont University. He began his teaching career in 2006 at John Overton High School
in Nashville, Tennessee. Merideth then taught at Montgomery Bell Academy starting in 2010.
Under his direction, the orchestra program blossomed into three distinct ensembles. The
auditioned Chamber Orchestra earned a “Superior” rating at the MTSBOA Concert Performance
Assessment and qualified for State Concert Festival, a first in school history. In addition to
conducting the Orchestra, Merideth directed the Junior School Singers, taught AP Music Theory,
and served as a pianist for any on campus performance needs.
Merideth has taught Choir, Orchestra, and AP Music Theory at Hillwood High School since
2019. In 2020, Merideth was nominated by the students of Hillwood as a MNPS Academy Teacher of the Year
Candidate and in 2021 was selected by his colleagues as a finalist for the HHS Teacher of the Year. During the
pandemic, Merideth augmented interest in his ensembles by collaborating with renowned guest performers from
across the nation in the virtual classroom.
As a collaborative pianist, Merideth has been a regular fixture for the Tennessee All-State Choirs since 2005 and
recently performed with the 2020 ACDA Southern Region Junior High Honor Choir in Mobile, Alabama. In 2013,
Merideth was the score reader for PBS’s National Broadcast of “Christmas at Belmont” featuring Denyce Graves.
David Grandis, Conductor
David Grandis is currently the Director of Orchestras at the College of William and
Mary, Music Director of the Virginia Chamber Orchestra, and Music Director of
the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra. Mr. Grandis’ guest conducting opportunities
have included the Bordeaux National Symphony Orchestra, Toulouse’s Capitol
National Orchestra, Nice Philharmonic Orchestra, Sofia New Symphony Orchestra,
Minsk Philharmonic Orchestra, and Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra. Past
positions as Assistant Conductor have also included the Mid-Atlantic Symphony
Orchestra in Maryland, the Capital City Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.,
the Baltimore Opera Company and the National Philharmonic, where he served as
Cover Conductor. In 2021, he was awarded a conducting prize at the International
Conductors Workshop and Competition in Atlanta.
A specialist of the French repertoire, David Grandis has established long
relationships with prominent composers and their descendants: he recently completed research on the
symphonic works of Max d’Ollone, contributed to restore a lost score from Jean Françaix, and is currently
developing several projects involving concerts and recordings of this repertoire for Naxos.
David Grandis has an equal interest in both symphonic and lyric literature. His doctoral thesis, A la recherche
du chant perdu ©, analyzes the French style of opera singing and celebrates the era of the RTLN and its lyric
company; it has been published in French and English. He has regularly served as Assistant Conductor at the
Lyon National Opera in France and was invited by Albert Lance to conduct productions of Gounod’s Faust and
Puccini’s Il Tabarro. Further lyric conducting engagements include several performances of Puccini’s La Bohème
with the Long Island Opera Company.
A native of France, David Grandis completed his formal musical training in several conservatories and earned
a B.M. in Musicology in France, a M.M. in Conducting under Donald Schleicher at the University of Illinois in
Champaign, a Graduate Performance Diploma under Gustav Meier at the Peabody Institute, and a D.M.A. in
Conducting under James Smith at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has participated in several master
classes with Marin Alsop, Gustav Meier, Rossen Milanov, Misha Kats, John Farrer, Daniel Lewis, Donald Thulean,
Philip Greenberg and Adrian Gnam.
