BBQ StateChampionship event sees 40 grill mastersfrom around the country competing forcash purse on Saturday. Over 40 brewerieswill be on hand with sample pours oftheir craft beers, special brews and brandfavorites, from Big Bear Lake BrewingCo., Coronado Brewing Co. and StoneBrewing. Other participants include 5174Brewing, Alosta Brewing, Belching BeaverBrewery, Bottle Logic Brewing, OakHills and many others.The music lineup amps up in 2022 aswell with headliners Morgan Leigh Band,well known in Big Bear after local performancesincluding at The Cave. The groupis one of the Southland’s fast-rising bandsmixing four-part vocal harmonies, rockenergy and pop country hooks, and hasopened for Pat Benatar, Loverboy, JamieO’Neal, Craig Wayne Boyd, James Otto,Sammy Kershaw, Phil Vassar and JuiceNewton among others. Along with RogerClyne and the Peacemakers, High Valley,Jake Owen, Justin Moore and more.Lead vocalist Leigh is a country starseen on “American Idol” Seasons 12 and14 and is a two-time nominee for BestCountry Americana for the San DiegoMusic Awards. A Texaco Country ShowdownState winner, she’s also been tabbedBest Female Vocalist and Entertainer of theYear for the California Country Awards.Leigh has performed the National Anthemat the PRCA Rodeo Finals in Las VegasMotor Speedway and at MadisonSquare Garden. HighDesert favorite Southern Spirit returns toWyatt’s with power country May 6-7.Regulars at Buckeye Jack’s in AppleValley, Southern Spirit has played everywherefrom the old Crazy Horse in OrangeCounty to the late Cocky Bull inVictorville during 25-plus years of music.Opening for the likes of MartinaMcBride, Brooks and Dunn and TobyKeith, among others.Nitro Express brings high-energycountry rock to Wyatt’s on May 14. Plus Maifest (May Fest)mixes in a few spring traditions like festivemaypole adorned with colorful ribbonsand accompanying dance plus special beverages.Hours are 1-10 p.m. each day.Maifest, a traditional German festivalcelebrating the end of winter and beginningof spring that dates to the 18th century,has its own champagne-style punchdrink called Maibowle. The German beerlineup includes Maibock, specially brewedspring suds. Just like Oktoberfest there’ssizzling bratwursts hot off the grill, famoushomemade sauerkraut, pretzels and applestrudel with warm vanilla sauce.Plus each of the three days sees a differentGerman band, each of which performedat last year’s Big Bear Oktoberfestand is adept at playing polka music andAmerican dance standards. First up on May21 is Bavarian Beergarden Band, longtimefavorites at Southland festivals with engagingoompa-pah music.Memorial Day weekend sees DieSauerkrauts on Saturday, May 28. ConsideredL.A.’s premier polka party band, thegroup’s members have skills that range farbeyond Bavarian music. Accordion BrianManchen for instance has played with symphonyorchestras and musical theater. Inhis spare time he drums for the prog rockband Chickenbox.Tuba player Robert Todd Jr. meanwhilehas traveled the world, performingwith orchestras and recording artists. YouThree days of Maifest, three German bands including Die Sauerkrauts (above)may have heard him play locally with Coronaand Dana Point Symphonies or theSanta Clarita Philharmonic. Drummer TillRitcher has a slew of credits, working withvaried artists including The Voice Germanywinner Julian Martel since he too is German.Sunday, May 29 sees Hazelnuss DasMusic take the stage. Bandleader AlexBubenheim played Munich Oktoberfest inhis early years and is now an internationallyrecognized composer who has workedor collaborated with Sheryl Crow, RingoStarr, David Hasselhoff and Sir BobGeldof.He’s joined by top-shelf musicianswho split their time between European andAmerican gigs. Like fellow German NickiStrehl on drums, guitarist Gary Miller andtuba extraordinaire Santiago Trujillo, whogrew up near a German village in Texasand started playing the euphonium at age11. Hazelnuss has performed at the largestOktoberfests around the state and country,Hofbrauhaus in Las Vegas and other topvenues.Maifest activities include Oktoberfestfavorites like log sawing and stein holdingcontests plus cornhole toss along witha variety of vendors and kids fun zone.
