ALUN POWELL 22 May 2022 NZPhotographer

Having begun photography in my late teens by completing a course that included darkroom development, I subsequently seemed to get ‘too busy in life’, and photography simply became snapshots of the kids and holidays. Over the last few years, I’ve become somewhat immersed again - and wow, how it’s changed! Nature is my interest. Just getting out there in amazing landscapes, I’m rediscovering that sense of wonder as I attempt to create a capture that will provide a personal recollection of a fleeting moment in time. @alseven_images GARDEN RESIDENTS This series represents my venture away from my usual landscape/seascape focus. These shots were recently taken in our garden in the Perth Hills, Australia, where we have three acres backing onto a National Park. With an array of trees and plants, we are lucky to attract quite a few “residents” with numerous seasonal visitors as and when the trees flower or produce fruit. It’s fair to say that some visitors are not quite as welcome as the birds, for example - snakes! Here, I’ve simply tried to capture a few of these wonderful birds in their day to day surroundings. A fast shutter speed is required for the New Holland honeyeaters and splendid fairywrens, whilst the red-tailed black cockatoos are far more chilled. The birds are: In silhouette: splendid fairywren In olive tree: forest red-tailed black cockatoo In red/yellow flowering gum: New Holland honeyeater In white bougainvillea: splendid fairywren NZPhotographer May 2022 23
