Vans x Daniel Johnston
In SP22 we have a collaboration in memory of the legendary outsider
musician and artist Daniel Johnston.
Johnston recorded, produced and distributed his own lo- fi recordsmostly
on cassette and drew the now iconic album artwork by hand – he
was the Epitome of DIY.
His music is hugely influential with artists from Kurt Cobain to the
Velvet underground citing him as an inspiration.
His Artwork is also hugely recognisable and has been used in repeat
collaborations with Supreme, Folk and with Vans with No Comply
Skateshop.
Johnston battled with mental illness and was diagnosed with bi- polar
disorder and schizophrenia – in the documentary film ‘the devil and
Daniel Johston’ ,
he recounts how during one psychotic episode whilst flying in a small 2
seater plane piloted by his father, he grabbed the planes keys from the
ignition and threw them out the window - forcing them to crash land
in a forest, but this story has a positive ending, as well as both men
miraculously surviving, Johnston became a meaningful ambassador for
mental wellness and is the inspiration for the
“Hi How Are You Project”.
