Vans x Daniel JohnstonIn SP22 we have a collaboration in memory of the legendary outsidermusician and artist Daniel Johnston.Johnston recorded, produced and distributed his own lo- fi recordsmostlyon cassette and drew the now iconic album artwork by hand – hewas the Epitome of DIY.His music is hugely influential with artists from Kurt Cobain to theVelvet underground citing him as an inspiration.His Artwork is also hugely recognisable and has been used in repeatcollaborations with Supreme, Folk and with Vans with No ComplySkateshop.Johnston battled with mental illness and was diagnosed with bi- polardisorder and schizophrenia – in the documentary film ‘the devil andDaniel Johston’ ,he recounts how during one psychotic episode whilst flying in a small 2seater plane piloted by his father, he grabbed the planes keys from theignition and threw them out the window - forcing them to crash landin a forest, but this story has a positive ending, as well as both menmiraculously surviving, Johnston became a meaningful ambassador formental wellness and is the inspiration for the“Hi How Are You Project”.
