of summer approaching, I just had 

my first three-gig week of the season 

(adding Tuesday to my regular Friday 

and Saturday at Exit Zero Filling Station). Add 

in my usual Thursday morning delivery job 

and it was a grueling four-day work week of 

almost 20 hours. 20! And it only gets worse in 

the coming days as I go to four gigs a week in 

May and five in June, bumping my weekly hour 

load perilously close to 30. 30! In America! I 

should have been something easy, like a doctor 

or a lawyer. 

I played two of those gigs last week with 

“Cosmic” Charlie Wigo (why is he called 

“Cosmic” Charlie? Because, uh, he’s a big 

NASA fan), and on Friday he went off on a little 

Grateful Dead tangent and I was shocked at not 

only how many dirty hippies there were in Exit 

Zero singing along, but also that at the end of 

it, a nice young lady dropped a $50 in our tip 

jar. Takes all kinds, I suppose. I’d be more likely 

to put a $50 in someone’s tip jar to NOT play 

Grateful Dead, but that’s just me. 

Saturday I was paired up with electric stylings 

of “Sugar” Dave Hughes (why is he called 

“Sugar” Dave Hughes? Because, uh, he’s a big 

fan of Skittles… nah, actually it’s because his 

playing is so sweet). We added several new 

songs this week that I think sounded pretty 

good. I say “I think” because, honestly, I’ve 

never been as actively ignored by an audience 

as I was on Saturday night. It’s fine. People are 

there to eat. I get it. But do they not understand 

how fragile my ego is?

Chuck Lorre is a name you may not 

recognize, but he is the Norman Lear 

of this generation. Wait? Don’t know 

Norman Lear? Back in the 1970s, 

Lear created such TV hits as All in 

the Family, Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at 

a Time, The Jeffersons, and Good Times. He was 

known for pushing controversy on his shows, 

and he was a big deal. 

Lorre is also credited with creating a 

bunch of hit shows like Dharma and Greg, Big 

Bang Theory, and Two and a Half Men. Some of 

those shows for me are “guilty pleasures.” 

They’re so campy sometimes but are crazy 

enough to make me laugh. Yet over the years, 

I never was compelled to write a review about 

any of his work. Refer to the previous comment 

about “campy.” 

Well, there is one show he has produced 

that changed my mind. B Positive is set in a 

nursing home. Annaleigh Ashford plays Gina, 

a woman that inherits a ton of money and 

uses it to buy the nursing home where she 

works. Thomas Middleditch plays Drew, a

guy in desperate need of a kidney transplant. 

Gina provides one of her own kidneys, and the 

two share a certain chemistry as a result (pun 

intended). 

It’s not the romantic tension between the 

two characters that is unique. We’ve seen this 

many times before. And it’s not the plot of a 

new business owner who rises from the ranks 

of employee. What makes B Positive interesting 

to watch are the old-timers. It truly is a 

cast of characters from yesteryear — some of 

them major stars back in the day. Ben Vereen, 

Linda Lavin, Jane Seymour to name the main 

players. Then there are other characters in the 

show whose names and previous roles you 

recognize, like Doc from Love Boat (Bernie 

Kopell) and Hector Elizondo of Chicago Hope. 

Hosting this talent that no one would 

want to see fade into obscurity is actually 

something I’d expect from Lorre. Yes, he’s not 

getting any younger at 69. But he’s also featured. 

Beyond featuring these actors, B Positive 

has a different flavor thematically from Lorre’s 

other work. It’s true his shows have always 

tried to take a deeper dive into the human 

condition. In B Positive those discussions take 

a deeper meaning as the show talks about 

growing old or dealing with grief. And still 

gets laughs. 

So hats off to Lorre for creating something 

I don’t have to feel too guilty watching. This 

show just finished its second season with all 

signs indicating it will return for a third season 

in the fall.

As April waxes, more and more 

Greater Yellowlegs pile into the 

marshes of Delaware Bay. Fresh up 

from wetlands in the southern US, 

Mexico and South America, these 

sturdy sandpipers with flashing yellow legs 

stride through the shallow water in search of 

mostly invertebrate prey. In a few short weeks 

they will be in breeding territories in boreal 

muskeg. Perched atop spruce trees, making 

the air ring with their chirping yodeled song. 

The marshes of Delaware Bay are a vital stop 

over point and have been for centuries. 

Philadelphia landscape painter Thomas 

Eakins (1844-1916) was enamored with the 

marshes of Delaware Bay. His 1874 oil painting 

“Whistling for Plover,” is perhaps his most 

famous painting. It depicts a crouched man 

wearing a white shirt and straw hat, with a 

single barrel, muzzle-load shotgun and lips 

puckered in a whistle. Behind him is another 

man lying on his side reloading. The crumpled 

birds around the gunner are Greater 

Yellowlegs, not plover but the white masted 

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

ships on the horizon are most certainly oyster 

schooners out of Port Norris and the winter-browned 

marsh grass date the painting 

to April when Greater Yellowlegs numbers 

are at their peak. While protected by the 

International Migratory Bird Treaty of 1918, 

gunning shorebirds was a celebrated tradition 

on the Bayshore and the big, meaty Greater 

Yellowlegs worth a volley of shots. 

Known to gunners as the “Tell Tale” 

because their loud warning cries would alert 

other shorebird species to danger. A vintage 

Greater Yellowlegs decoy with original paint 

might fetch up to $4,000 today. It kills me to 

think of the number of decoys burned for fuel 

after shorebird hunting was made illegal. All 

those elegant Harry V. Shourds originals up 

in smoke. Every one of them fit for a fireplace 

mantel today. I have several of his grandson’s 

yellowlegs replicas but, while works of 

art, these were never tempered by purpose. 

Happily, protection came in time to save the 

yellowlegs from extinction. Other shorebirds 

like Buff-breasted and Upland Sandpiper have 

never recovered their former numbers. 

Celebrate what we have. If you travel 

to the marshes of Thompson’s Beach and 

Moore’s Beach, you may be treated to the sight 

of 100s of yellowlegs in echelon formation 

heading north with spring. Moore’s Beach 

Road is near impassable even at low tide. The 

nearby Heislerville impoundments attract 

1000s of shorebirds on a full tide, provided 

someone remembers to lower the water level.

South Jersey Beer Scene/Brewery Strong 

We all have our favorite signs of 

spring — for some, it’s the tulips 

or the craft shows, and others it’s 

the return of tourists. For many 

Cape May lovers, the best sign of 

spring is the return of traditional events, some 

of which took a pandemic hiatus. 

New Jersey Audubon’s Spring Festival 

is one returning event bringing birders to 

experience the Spring Migration in Cape 

May. Attendees can see for themselves why 

National Geographic includes this area among 

the top-10 birding destinations in the world. 

From May 19-22, birders will gather to learn 

about birds and wildlife visiting the Jersey 

Cape. There will be lectures and presentations 

led by world famous experts and local naturalists. 

(Sessions for newcomers will be marked 

“NBE” for “New Birder Essentials.) In addition 

to the lectures, there will be field trips, boat 

and trolley tours, and parties. Representatives 

from Birdability will be there as part of New 

Jersey Audubon’s efforts to increase accessibility. 

Registration for members is $205 for 

three days, or $75 daily; for non-members, 

$240 for three days, or $95 daily. Act fast — 

rates go up May 1. Vaccination is required to 

attend. Visit njaudubon.org. 

In another returning sign of spring, 

“Feasting on History” is back this year on 

Tuesday, May 3, 6-9pm. This gala event, held 

at the NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum at the 

Cape May Airport, restaurants, breweries and 

distilleries present their best products for you 

to enjoy. “Feasting on History” raises funds 

for Historic Cold Spring Village. Tickets must 

be purchased in advance, $85 per person, or 

$700 for a table of 10. Deadline for tickets is 

April 30. Visit hcsv.org. 

The Exit Zero Jazz Festival, May 13-15, 

will bring hundreds of musicians performing 

at two outdoor stages on the grounds of Exit 

Zero Ferry Park at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry 

Terminal, 1200 Lincoln Boulevard, North 

Cape May. The three-day “musical feast” 

continues each evening at venues throughout 

Cape May. For $180, you get a three-day pass 

to Ferry Park — bring your own chair. VIP 

passes for $230 include access to reserved seat 

sections. Single-day options are available, as 

is the Cape May Brewing Company Hops Pass 

for $48, which gives you access to first-come, 

first-served entry into Festival club venues.

A good friend of my husband and I came 

to visit us over Easter weekend. We knew 

him and worked with him when we lived 

in Pennsylvania and have stayed in touch. 

I served a beautiful dinner Saturday and 

Sunday. We have a full wine cellar and served 

our best with each meal. Here’s the problem, 

the next morning we came down to find empty 

wine bottles in the kitchen. We are super polite 

people and didn’t want to make a scene. We are 

terribly fond of him, so we said nothing. But, 

he is already talking about a summer visit. He 

hasn’t apologized for raiding cellar or offered 

to replenish the bottles. We just don’t think 

we want him back. Do we confront him or just

The Polite Strategy: Tell him you’re 

repairing the house with no guests for a while. 

The other approach: Tell him he took the 

concept “Mi casa Su casa” a little too literally 

and you can’t afford it. Or a combination of the 

two. As for you, spend the weekend touring 

Cape May’s wineries — Willow Creek, Turdo 

and Cape May Winery should put you in a 

better frame of wine and replenish your cellar.

My wife and I had a baby last year and we 

held a one-year birthday party last month — 

a big deal in our Italian family. Now I love my 

niece and nephew and have showered them 

with gifts since they were born. Imagine my 

surprise when I unwrap my son’s gifts and 

my sister, his Godmother, gave him a paddle 

ball. I was so angry I nearly threw it at her. My 

wife told me to let it go, but this isn’t the first 

time she’s pulled something like this. For my 

wedding she gave us a coupon for fries. She 

thinks our mother shows favoritism toward 

me, but it’s not true. What say you? — Miffed

Sounds like some serious sibling rivalry 

going on. There is no winning this childish 

argument and it is pointless to engage. The 

problem is with her relationship with your 

mother. You can’t control that but can try 

to understand it. Lower your expectations

and wonderful memories together. Ross is back 

for his second exhibit and communicating his 

thoughts and feelings through his paintings.

are invited to attend and enjoy an evening of art 

and conversation.
