Feeling the industry’s pulse
Without any doubt, there were high expectations
of InnoTrans 2012. Looking
back, we can say that the outcome was
overwhelmingly positive. The trade fair
exceeded all expectations, and not just
in terms of numbers. For the global railway
industry, InnoTrans 2012 was a
highly successful business opportunity,
as dramatically borne out by the
billions’ worth of deals that were clinched.
Moreover, the trade show enhanced
its reputation as the biggest marketing
platform for the railway industry.
The whole world of railways was represented
in Berlin, drawn by the comprehensive
market overview and the unique
opportunities offered for in-depth exchanges
with rail industry players from
all over the world. Be it with clients,
business partners or suppliers – exhibitors
got actual face time with all relevant
target groups. Particularly noteworthy
is the further growth of international
interest in InnoTrans: for the first
time, trade visitors from over 140 countries
travelled to the trade fair in Berlin.
At the same time, there was a marked
rise in the number of visits by diplomats,
ministers and foreign delegations. So,
what can we take away from the event?
First of all, InnoTrans has reached a new
level as a venue for deal-making and
above all as the global marketplace for
the railway industry. It succeeds in integrating
all market participants and bringing
together industry players from industrial
countries and growth markets.
Moreover, InnoTrans feels the industry’s
pulse, picks up on current trends, and
is constantly evolving. A good example
of this is the success of the newly introduced
specialist forums such as the
DB Suppliers‘ Forum or the International
Design Forum. The highlighting of industry
trends and development of new
event formats is precisely what we intend
to carry further at InnoTrans 2014.
InnoTrans extends its success
An increase in exhibitors and trade
visitors, 104 world premieres and
business deals worth EUR 1.8 billions:
these were outstanding outcomes.
As a result, InnoTrans added a
further chapter to its unparalleled run
of successes, and further cemented its
reputation as the leading international
trade fair for transport technology.
The global railway industry was more
strongly represented at InnoTrans than
ever before. A total of 2,515 companies
from 49 countries – 272 exhibitors more
than two years ago – occupied the full
expanse of the exhibition grounds for
the fi rst time. Also very much on an upward
trend was the number of trade visitors:
126,110 trade visitors from over
140 countries came to fi nd out about
the latest products and services from
the global rail industry. Compared with
InnoTrans 2010, this meant a 19 per cent
increase in trade visitors, who came
from a broader spectrum of countries:
30 more than at the last event. Overall,
more than half of all exhibitors and trade
visitors were drawn from abroad. Thus,
the large international component continues
to be the hallmark of InnoTrans.
The success of the trade fair is also underlined
by the positive feedback. According
to a representative survey both
• Alstom and Netinera Deutschland concluded
a contract at InnoTrans for the
supply of 63 Coradia Lint regional trains
worth just under EUR 300 millions.
• Hitachi Rail Europe announced that
exhibitors and trade visitors were extremely
satisfi ed with InnoTrans 2012.
More than 90 per cent of exhibitors and
trade visitors said they would recommend
the fair and declared unreservedly
that they would be back again for
InnoTrans 2014. The survey also revealed
that almost half of the trade vi-
sitors were decision-makers, underlining
the positioning of the trade fair as
a marketing platform attracting both
suppliers and buyers.
InnoTrans attained a new level as a
stage for the presentation of premieres.
In total, exhibiting fi rms launched
147 new products and services, inclu-
ding 104 world premieres, 25 European
premieres and 18 German premieres.
The spectrum of innovations on show
for the fi rst time ranged from new ticketing
its success
Once again, the highly popular InnoTrans
Report Guided Tours provided
trade visitors with a compact
overview of the railway industry premieres
and innovations at InnoTrans.
A total of 16 guided tours were offer-
all over the world. Both experts from
ministries, trade associations and
procurement agencies, as well as
representatives from firms and research
institutions, took advantage
of the tours to gain an insight into
new developments and trends in
++ Railway policy nexus +++
Berlin was where the railway world
came together. The Opening Ceremony
alone welcomed over a thousand highranking
policy-makers and industry
representatives to InnoTrans. In his
speech, the Federal German Transport
Minister, Dr. Peter Ramsauer, spoke in
favour of closer integration among the
European railway markets, which are
still nationally oriented: „Railway policy
can only be viewed in pan-European
a positive response from the industry,
but also the growing significance of
InnoTrans as a venue for deal-making.
In total, transactions worth around
EUR 1.8 billions were announced in
Berlin. As an example of the importance
of InnoTrans as marketplace for
the global railway industry, a framework
agreement was signed be tween
Deutsche Bahn and the Pol ish rolling
stock manufacturer PESA for the supply
of up to 470 trainsets worth a total
of EUR 1.2 billions.
sised in the Opening Ceremony in the
Palais am Funkturm. In turn, the EU
Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas
highlighted the need for a single
European railway area, and deplored
the plethora of different standards and
requirements. „Much more needs to
be done to realise the full potential,“ he
urged. On the four days of the trade fair,
InnoTrans offered policy-makers and
industry representatives an ideal forum
for in-depth exchanges.
Surface milling is increasingly being
used to treat wear and fatigue on the
rail head – as a cost-effective alternative
to replacement of the entire rail.
The drawback common to all previously
available milling techniques was
the slow machining speed.
At InnoTrans, Vossloh Rail Services
premiered a new mobile milling solution
that can remove up to three millimetres
on the rail surface and ten
millimetres on the gauge corner at
operating speeds of up to two kilometres
per hour. In the same machining
pass, a fi nishing operation takes
place to smooth the treated surface
at the same time.
The dust- and spark-free process
also removes absolutely all millings,
thereby minimising dirt and fi re risk,
which is an advantage especially in
tunnels. The innovative rail milling
solution is the result of the joint venture
announced in the spring of 2012
between Vossloh Rail Services and
Pneumatic-tyre
Swiss company Vigier Rail, manufacturer
of concrete products for railways,
together with the licensor, Sonneville,
has introduced a new development for
use on the Low Vibration Track (LVT)
slab track system, presented for the
fi rst time at InnoTrans 2012.
It enables pneumatic-tyre emergency
vehicles to operate on LVT rail tracks,
thus meeting modern emergency rescue
concepts requiring such vehicles to be
able to access tunnels. The track for
emergency vehicles is created by means
of an additional concrete layer, cast insitu,
in combination with the newly developed
LVT support points with high
shoulders. Specially designed formwork
The fully automated Scalex WILD (wheel
load and wear detectors) system from
Finnish manufacturer Tamtron Systems
monitors dynamic wheel forces and
checks wheels for flat spots. Flat areas
damage the track and cause bearings
to overheat. This in turn can lead to
axle damage or to loosening of the
wheels. Worn or damaged bearings
also lead to other forms of damage. In
the past problems with wheels have
been detected by ear, by using various
instruments, visually or in the workshop.
With Scalex, readings are obtained
automatically and are reproducible at
any time. The manufacturer says that
Scalex operates reliably at between
speeds of ten and 250 kph. When the
pre-set limit is reached the system
immediately activates an alarm, showing
the wagon and wheels involved. The
Finnish transport authority has decided
to install several of these systems on
the country’s main lines.
Japan establishes itself in the European
railway market
At InnoTrans 2012 Japan occupied an entire exhibition hall – marking a first in
the trade show’s history, and reflecting the increasing importance of the European
railway market for firms from Asia. Japanese company Hitachi Rail Systems
has been operating in Great Britain in particular since 2002. Timed to coincide
with the trade fair, it was announced that a contract had been signed with
MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH for the supply and maintenance of traction motors
for Hitachi’s Super Express Trains. The high-speed trainsets from Hitachi Rail
Systems are due to come into service on two British routes starting in 2017.
InnoTrans REPORT spoke to Alistair
Dormer, Executive Chairman & CEO of
Hitachi Rail Europe Ltd., on the significance
of InnoTrans for the company, on
investment in Europe and on the European
railway market.
InnoTrans REPORT: Mr Dormer, what
were the highlights of Hitachi Rail
Europe’s presence at InnoTrans 2012?
How important is the trade fair for your
company?
For Hitachi Rail Europe InnoTrans 2012
was a great success. We signed a
contract for the Intercity Express programme
with the UK Department of
Transport, as well as a contract for a
prototype traffic management system
for Network Rail, also in the UK. Our
aim at InnoTrans this year was to show
that we have established ourselves in
Europe’s rail industry. We took the op-
portunity of the trade fair to cultivate
relations with our European customers
and were pleased to be able to meet
with our many European suppliers.
InnoTrans offers an ideal platform for
that. We invested a lot of time and effort
in planning for our participation in
the event.
How much has Hitachi Rail Europe
been affected by global economic developments
over the last two years?
Has there been a change in your business
processes?
As we all know, the last two years have
seen very difficult economic conditions.
For us, investments in infrastructure
are a major prerequisite for economic
growth, in both the public and the private
sectors. That’s why we’re investing
in building a production facility in
Newton Aycliffe in the North-West of
Compact AC auxiliary
power converter
The internationally active SMA Railway
Technology GmbH, Kassel, launched
its newly designed auxiliary power
converter for air conditioning
systems at InnoTrans. Developed in
response to a commission from air
conditioning system manufacturer
Faiveley, the SMARTcooler was designed
for integration in ET 474 Plus
train units of S-Bahn Hamburg GmbH.
The challenge was to supply a very
lightweight, flat system for integration
in the air conditioning systems,
which had to be installed directly on
the vehicle roof, placing especially
tight constraints on the weight and
height of the converter.
As the converter weighs just under
180 kilograms and is only 270 millimetres
high, SMA says its product is
made for easy and flexible installation
in very tight spaces into the air conditioning
system. An input converter
with medium-frequency isolation and
two downstream three-phase inverters
are mounted on a mounting plate
and are realized as compact modules
that allow for easy and separate replacement
if necessary.
One inverter supplies the air conditioning
compressor at variable frequency
and the second inverter sup-
plies the fans and where necessary
the driver’s cab air conditioning at
fixed frequency.
Well connected
by Wago
Wago, the inventor of spring pressure
connection technology as an alternative
to screw terminals, manufactures
components for electrical connections
as well as electronic components for
decentralised automation technology.
Nowadays spring pressure connection
technology is a global industry standard.
At InnoTrans the Minden-headquartered
company show-cased several
new products, such as the Topjob-S
range of terminal blocks, expanded to
include products for simple measurement
in current transducer circuits
and for automatic shorting of transducers.
The new instrument and isolating
terminals have been specially designed
for use in current and voltage
transducers. They offer high functionality,
such as automatic shorting of
the transducer, combined with a very
compact design.
Also in the automation field, Wago has
launched the new two-tier push terminal,
available in many different ver-
sions. A feature of the new terminal is
that upper and lower tier functions are
individually combinable.
England. In so doing, we’re creating
new jobs and will be able to offer new
business prospects for our European
suppliers.
Where do you see the biggest challenges
and opportunities for Hitachi Rail
Europe in the railway market over the
next two to three years?
At Hitachi Rail Europe we have firmly
established ourselves at the heart of
Europe’s rail industry. At the same time,
this poses a challenge: over the coming
years we shall be concentrating our efforts
on our new facility in Newton Aycliffe.
Once the building work is complete,
we will be recruiting the staff we
need to ensure that we can meet the
terms of the contract for the Intercity
Express programme with the same dependability
that our customers have
long since come to expect of us.
six carriages each from a consortium made up of Siemens and the Polish
manufacturer Newag. The fi rst two trains are scheduled for delivery by the end
of 2012 and will then undergo dynamic testing in Warsaw.
For Siemens, this was the fi rst order
for the latest generation of Inspiro
underground trains as well as
the company’s largest order from
Poland to date. The order is worth
EUR 272 millions. The order comprises
the supply, commissioning,
testing and certifi cation of the Inspiro
trains. The fi rst ten trains will
be completely built at Siemens’
Simmering plant in Vienna. The fi -
nal assembly of the remaining vehicles
will be carried out in Nowy
Sa˛cz, Poland by the consortium
partner Newag. Siemens is providing
the entire engineering and the
core components, while Newag is
supplying all parts of the interior furnishings
TRAMINO FOR JENA AND bRAUNScHWEIg
Polish vehicle designs
for the German market
Polish bus and tram manufacturer Solaris
is becoming increasingly wellestablished
on the tram market. The
company’s strategy right from the start
was to focus on the European market,
and the German market in particular.
Solaris has meanwhile been able
to book the fi rst two orders from Germany
for its Tramino tram.
For Jena, Solaris was awarded the
contract to supply fi ve Tramino trams
worth a total of approximately EUR
13.7 millions. The Tramino vehicles
were adapted to the operational requirements
in Jena and are fully lowfl
oor articulated trams for bi-directional
operation.
A further order has now been received
from Braunschweiger Verkehrs AG. For
Małgorzata Olszewska, Senior Executive
Sales and Marketing, this is a cause of
great satisfaction, because the German
market is very demanding and represents
a very good reference for these vehicles.
The Braunschweig order is worth
EUR 33 millions and the fi rst trams will be
delivered in 2014, she said.
Solaris only decided to enter the rail vehicle
market in 2008, having previously
been a manufacturer of buses. In 2009
the pre-series model of the Solaris Tramino
was introduced and the fi rst orders
for this tram were received from
the public transport operator in Poznan’.
Małgorzata Olszewska pointed out that
all 45 Solaris Traminos ordered for Poznan’
have now been delivered and are
rying up to 1,450 passengers (at 7
persons/m 2 ) in six cars, with seating
for a total of 256 and standing room
for as many as 1,194.
The vehicle design was created in
cooperation with a US design fi rm
and fully takes into account the
customer’s Corporate Design preferences.
The combination of futuristic
design of the front end and
graphic styling of the sidewalls, plus
a bright, open-plan interior, symbolises
the forward-looking spirit of
present-day Warsaw. “Warsaw
will have the world’s most advanced
metro system“, said Dr. Hans-
Jörg Grundmann , managing director
of the Siemens train division.
“Inspiro will inspire Warsaw and
its citizens.“
International Design Forum:
focus on materials and appearance
The International Design Forum was
held for the fi rst time at this year’s
InnoTrans. Devoted to the design of vehicles
and their interiors, as well as
the utilisation of innovative and sustainable
materials, the Forum met with
a very positive reception from trade
fair visitors. The International Design
Forum was a highlight in the equally
new Public Transport and Interiors Hall
Forum (PTI Hall Forum).
With the PTI Hall Forum, InnoTrans
further extended the two growth segments
Public Transport and Interiors,
and in addition brought together under
one roof the themes of procurement
and design that are of importance
to the Public Transport segment. In the
context of the International Design
Forum, a high-calibre panel discussion
on the topic of “Public Transport,
Mobile Interiors and Design” was held
on 19th September.
Discussion of trends
and competition
At this event, trends in interior and
train design were discussed by industry
specialists. Paul Priestman, Director
of the multi-disciplinary agency
Priestmangoode, spoke about competition
among transport modes. He
pointed out that public transport was
competing with aviation and road
transport, where ever-higher quality
materials were being used for the
interiors. Simone de Waart, founder
LANTAL TEXTILES
Tailor-made train interior
Lantal Textiles AG specialises in allin-one
solutions for train, tram, bus and
aircraft interiors. The product portfolio
of the Swiss company encompasses
carpeting as well as velvet pile and fl at
woven seat fabrics, as well as fabrics
for headrest covers. Amongst others,
the fi rm presented two carpet innovations
at InnoTrans.
For the fi rst time, Lantal showed its
looped carpet. Looped carpets are distinguished
by having uncut pile loops.
This model can be individually tailored
to customer requirements; the manufacturer
says that this carpet is extremely
hard wearing. „That makes this
carpet quality ideal for rolling stock
on high traffi c density routes,“ said
Hanspeter Baumgartner, Head of Development
and Innovation at Lantal. In
addition, looped carpets are easy to
clean, because their tightly closed surface
prevents deep penetration by dust.
A further innovation is a hundred per
The International Design Forum was devoted to the design of vehicles
and their interiors.
Trying out different types and qualities of train seating.
cent wool quality carpet. This combines
the advantages of wool on the
surface with a looped construction.
The result, the company says, is outstanding
walking comfort. Lantal offers
not only semi-fi nished goods such as
carpets, but also engineering services,
pre-cut and ready-to-install products,
as well as design and lab test services.
According to Lantal, fl oor mapping,
preparation of blueprints, trial installation
and fi ne-tuning are single-source
services that reduce the customer‘s
process times and costs.
Additionally, Lantal can propose a solution
that shortens turnaround times
when a railcar‘s carpeting must be replaced.
A self-adhesive coating can
be applied to the conventional carpet
and works according to the “Post-it”
principle: the carpet is quickly laid without
the customary double-sided tape
and at the end of its service life can be
removed again without leaving any
traces of adhesive.
and creative director of the Material
Sense network, emphasised how important
materials are for designers‘
creative process. At the same time,
account always had to be taken of
technical requirements and cultural
differences.
Passengers should
feel comfortable and secure
The Chief Innovation Offi cer at Bombardier
Transportation, Martin Ertl,
said that it was important for public
transport users to feel comfortable
and secure when travelling, and at
the same time should be able to derive
added value from the use of public
transport – for example, by using
mobile communication services. Of the
same opinion was the head of CI/CD at
DB Mobility Logistics, Karsten Henze,
who said that design should be looked
at as part of the system and not in isolation.
Axel Enthoven, founder and CEO
of Enthoven Associates & Yellow Window,
stressed the importance of highquality
materials. For example, he said,
using leather upholstery in Brussels‘
public transport vehicles came at little
extra cost, but resulted in less damage
due to vandalism, as users had more
respect for the material. In future, design
and mobility will be ever more
closely interlinked – this was the main
conclusion of the panel discussion in
front of an enthusiastic audience. The
Forum was organised by the International
Design Centre Berlin.
High-tech premiere for TGV tunnel –
two months in advance
Two months earlier than planned, tunnel
boring machine “Charlotte“ reached
the west side of the Vosges Mountains,
concluding excavation for the fi rst tube
of the “Tunnel de Saverne”. A newly developed
high-tech machine from Herrenknecht
is being used, which can
be converted inside the tunnel and
adjusted for different soil conditions.
The twin-tube rail tunnel is part of the
section on the TGV Paris-Strasbourg
line currently being upgraded for train
speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour.
The French TGV currently takes two
hours and 20 minutes from Paris to
Strasbourg. From Paris to Baudrecourt
in the Lorraine region it runs
on a high-speed line. Further upgrading
eastwards over 106 kilometres
through Alsace to Strasbourg is
running at full speed in order to shorten
the journey time for passengers
by 30 minutes from 2016. For tunnelling
under the Vosges Mountains the
All over the world, more and more people
are migrating to conurbations. As a
result, the volume of both passenger and
freight traffi c is constantly increasing. In
many cases, underground transport infrastructures
offer the only solution to
create additional capacity. The increasing
importance of tunnel construction
was also very apparent at InnoTrans 2012.
This year, as at the previous trade fair, the
Tunnel Construction segment received a
lot of attention. In his statement at the opening
press conference, Dr. Roland Leucker,
Chief Executive of the German Research
Association for Underground Transportation
Facilities (STUVA), an independent,
non-profi t research institution, said: “Tunnels
are urgently needed for transport
as well as for supply and waste disposal
purposes,” because a modern society
needs mobility. He added that experts are
predicting that freight traffi c will expand
French construction consortium Spie
Batignolles TPCI – Dodin Campenon
Bernard is currently using a tunnel
boring machine (TBM) from Herrenknecht.
The TBM began excavation
of the nearly four kilometre long north
tube on the eastern side of the Vosges
at the launch portal near Ernolsheim
lès Saverne in November 2011.
Two months ahead of schedule it was
recently able to complete excavation
of the fi rst tube on the west side of
the Vosges. During the seven months
of tunnelling the site teams achieved
daily best performances of up to 46
metres and weekly best performances
of up to 250 metres.
The Schwanau engineers adapted the
Herrenknecht TBM known as “Charlotte“
(convertible EPB Shield S-670,
diameter 10,010 mm) to the geological
conditions in the project in such
a way that it could handle excavation
in two different soil types. For the fi rst
200 metres of the northern tunnel it
by 70 per cent by 2025, and by 2015 it is
expected that ten per cent of urban inhabitants
will be living in mega-cities with
populations in excess of 15 million. That is
why the EU Parliament approved the expansion
of the Trans-European Transport
Network (TEN-T) over ten years ago.
Dr. Leucker went on to say that 15,000 kilometres
of transport tunnels are currently in
use in Europe, of which some 1,400 kilometres
are in Germany. A further 140 kilometres
are under construction at the present
worked through unconsolidated rock
(a mixture of sandstone and shell limestone)
in the closed EPB (Earth Pressure
Balance)-Shield mode. In accordance
with the prevailing hard
rock (red sandstone) that followed,
the rest of the advance was continued
in open mode. For switching
between modes all that is need ed
are some adjustments at the cutting
wheel. The conveyor belt and
the screw conveyor remain installed
on the machine in both modes. The
Saverne project is the fi rst time a Herrenknecht
TBM with a convert ible
EPB shield has been used that can
also handle the open hard rock mode
with belt conveyor discharge.
“The Tunnel de Saverne is a special
challenge,“ says Herrenknecht Proj-
ect Manager Stephan Hanusek, and
continues: “The conversion went
without a hitch, so the machine was
ready again in a few days.“ Since the
breakthrough of the fi rst tunnel, the
