Riders take off from <strong>the</strong> Columbus Centre for a fun-filled day of cycling with an Italian Spin
<strong>Cyclists</strong> <strong>Give</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>GTA</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>“Boot”</strong>
Cycling with an Italian spin –
over 150 cyclists experienced “la
dolce vita” as <strong>the</strong>y saluted <strong>the</strong>
famous European bike ride Giro
d’Italia, raising $90,000 for Villa
Charities Foundation.
On Sunday, May 25, <strong>the</strong> 3rd
annual Giro T.O. began its bootshaped
route at <strong>the</strong> Columbus
Centre at Dufferin and Lawrence
and traveled through <strong>the</strong> <strong>GTA</strong>,
ending at Villa Charities’ newest
project – Villa Colombo Vaughan.
After a quick breakfast and brief
welcoming remarks, <strong>the</strong> Maglia Rosa
was presented to Edward Sorbara,
<strong>the</strong> visionary behind Giro T.O., who
successfully raised almost $40,000
personally in pledges!
On <strong>the</strong> count of The
Honourable Joe Volpe, MP, Dufferin-
Eglinton, <strong>the</strong> girini were off. This
year, riders had <strong>the</strong> option of cycling
<strong>the</strong> full 65 km course, or a shorter
version that totaled 30 km. Both
trails led participants through
Toronto and Vaughan’s Italian
neighbourhoods and consisted of
four rest stops that offered Italian
cuisine and refreshments.
Local supporters were on hand
to cheer on <strong>the</strong> riders, including
Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone who
was at <strong>the</strong> first rest stop at College
and Crawford streets. Participants
stayed hydrated, energized and
ready to tackle <strong>the</strong> streets of Toronto
thanks to additional rest stops at
Edenbridge Plaza, Crawford Jones
Memorial Park and Famee Furlane,

espresso and munched on polenta
and sausages!

Michelangelo’s famous
<strong>David</strong> found a permanent
home at Columbus Centre on
Dufferin Street (at Lawrence
Avenue). Hundreds of
community leaders, art lovers
and Villa Charities’ supporters
ga<strong>the</strong>red on May 25, 2008 for
<strong>the</strong> official unveiling of <strong>the</strong>
only statue of its kind in
Toronto – a true size, bronze
replica of <strong>the</strong> original housed
in <strong>the</strong> Accademia in Florence.
The statue is <strong>the</strong> largest
piece of art received by
Columbus Centre, thanks to a
very generous donation by
founder, long-time volunteer
and benefactor Anthony J.
Fusco and family.
“Tony is a true leader in
our community,” stated Rudy
Bratty, Chair, Villa Charities
Foundation, at <strong>the</strong> official
unveiling in <strong>the</strong> lobby of <strong>the</strong>
Centre. “I actually first
became involved with Villa
Charities after a conversation
with Tony almost 40 years
ago. His continued
generosity, passion and
leadership inspire me to this

Where were you on July 9th, 2006? Come and
find yourself at Columbus Centre amid thousands of
Italian soccer fans!
Soccer aficionados and art lovers ga<strong>the</strong>red at
Columbus Centre on May 8, 2008 as a photographic
piece of art created by local artist Roberto Portolese
was made public.
Armed with his camera and amid thousands of
overjoyed soccer fans, Roberto captured <strong>the</strong> city’s
spontaneous reaction to Italy’s World Cup win in
2006, much like he did 24 years earlier in 1982.
Both iconic photos, large and impressive, hang
proudly in <strong>the</strong> lobby of Columbus Centre.
“These photos represent Italian-Canadian family
portraits – <strong>the</strong>n and now,” states Pal Di Iulio,
President and CEO, Villa Charities Inc. “The
spontaneous celebrations following Italy’s 1982 World
Cup win marked <strong>the</strong> coming of age for our
community – we arrived. The 2006 celebration

brought toge<strong>the</strong>r a whole new generation of Toronto
soccer fans and Italian-Canadians. We are pleased to
share both iconic events in our history, which will be
on permanent display at Columbus Centre.”
The 2006 photograph is actually a collage of over
800 photos taken on St. Clair by Roberto – pieced
toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>y accurately represent <strong>the</strong> passion and
celebration felt by millions of soccer fans that glorious
July day, two decades since Roberto’s original famous
photograph on St. Clair.

“The 2006 photo captures a joyful celebration in
Paradise after a long season in Purgatory. Soccer is an
Italian-Canadian passion and celebrations are part of
our culture. Community members will feel a sense of
pride when <strong>the</strong>y see <strong>the</strong>se exciting images - reminders
of <strong>the</strong> beautiful moments shared by hundreds of
thousands. They are truly historic.”

Under <strong>the</strong> leadership of Mr. Fusco, <strong>the</strong> bronze statue was
acquired from a private owner in <strong>the</strong> Niagara area. This bronze is an
actual-size, reproduction of <strong>the</strong> original, cast in Italy in <strong>the</strong> 1950s
and brought to Canada in <strong>the</strong> 1970s. The statue is approximately 8
feet tall and weighs 2,000 pounds.
“A few years ago, Mr. Fusco began his personal beautification
plan for our campus,” stated Nick Sgro, Chair, Columbus Centre.
“This year, he will generously continue this plan, with <strong>David</strong> being
<strong>the</strong> first official installation of <strong>the</strong> season. We owe Mr. Fusco a great
deal of gratitude for helping to make our cultural piazza all <strong>the</strong> more
beautiful and vibrant.”
Columbus Centre has taken on a leadership role to properly
repair and preserve this rare and culturally significant piece of art for
generations to come. This sculpture, located in <strong>the</strong> three-storey
lobby of <strong>the</strong> Centre, now welcomes visitors and is complimented by
a previous installation of <strong>David</strong>’s Shadow by artist Mario Martinelli,
which was brought to Columbus Centre in 2004 and is displayed on
an exterior wall.

For over 30 years, <strong>the</strong> Columbus Centre
Daycare has enriched <strong>the</strong> mind, body and soul of
thousands of children. This unique brand of
childcare, exclusive to <strong>the</strong> Columbus Centre, blends
programs that ensure proper child development
while celebrating Italian culture and traditions.
Children receive Italian lessons on a daily basis,
meals are Italian-inspired and special activities are
planned to celebrate Italian festivals and holidays,
such as <strong>the</strong> popular La Befana Brunch. Under <strong>the</strong>
care of Early Childhood Educators, children from
ages 18 months to 12 years have a fun, engaging,
culturally-sensitive place to learn, laugh and grow.
Construction is well underway to expand
services so even more children in <strong>the</strong> community
can benefit from our innovative programs and
special brand of care. A brand new day care is
being developed in Centro Abruzzo, which is part
of Villa Charities’ Casa Abruzzo, an independent
seniors’ residence.
“This new facility at Keele & 401 will continue
our tradition of culturally-sensitive care for children
in state-of-<strong>the</strong>-art surroundings,” states Nick Sgro,
Chair, Columbus Centre. “We are proud to have <strong>the</strong>
support of <strong>the</strong> entire community as we grow to meet
<strong>the</strong> needs of our children.”

Villa Colombo Services for Seniors
Villa Colombo:
Accredited
June 1st to 4th, 2008 marked
<strong>the</strong> Accreditation Survey Review for
Villa Colombo Services for Seniors.
Accreditation Canada is a
national agency which assists
health care organizations to
examine and improve <strong>the</strong> quality
of services rendered. This survey
guides clients to reach standards
of excellence. Organizations that
participate in <strong>the</strong> accreditation
program benefit from a thorough
assessment that leads to an action
plan for improving every aspect
of <strong>the</strong> health care and services
<strong>the</strong>y deliver.
By evaluating <strong>the</strong> quality of
care and service <strong>the</strong>y provide,
organizations are able to accurately
measure <strong>the</strong>ir clinical and
operational performance —
<strong>the</strong>reby giving <strong>the</strong>m a clear picture
of <strong>the</strong>ir strengths and areas to be
improved. Accreditation Canada’s
program has been developed with
<strong>the</strong> expertise of leaders in health
care who are <strong>the</strong> advisors and <strong>the</strong>
actual surveyors.
Over <strong>the</strong> years, this process
has become increasingly rigorous.
There are a multitude of
prescribed Standards and
Required Organizational Practices
that are mandated as part of <strong>the</strong>
requirements for Accreditation.

Villa Colombo was <strong>the</strong> proud recipient of a brand new bus
thanks to funding from <strong>the</strong> Central LHIN.
The Central Local Health Integration Network is one of 14
Local Health Integration Networks newly established by <strong>the</strong>
Government of Ontario as community-based organizations to plan,
co-ordinate, integrate and fund health care services at <strong>the</strong> local level.
This new vehicle adds to <strong>the</strong> fleet of buses and vans that help
seniors who use Villa Colombo’s Community Services remain
mobile and active. Groups have already used <strong>the</strong> bus for special
day outings, with many more planned throughout <strong>the</strong> summer.

resident safety.
This year, three surveyors,
two of whom are practicing Long
Term Care Administrators, visited
Villa Colombo. During <strong>the</strong> three
day comprehensive survey, <strong>the</strong>y
provided staff with a very in-depth
and independent assessment of
overall operations, from <strong>the</strong> Board
of Governors down to <strong>the</strong> front
line staff.
The process included a
comprehensive debriefing on <strong>the</strong>
final day, which was full of praises,
as well as some useful advice and
recommendations.
“Villa Colombo has always
been committed to providing <strong>the</strong>
best care to our seniors,” states
Enzo Cuttini, Chair, Villa
Colombo. “We always welcome
<strong>the</strong> opportunity to celebrate our
successes and improve on our
model of care, which in part, is
what is done during this
accreditation process.”
Recognizing <strong>the</strong> limitations of
<strong>the</strong> aging building, <strong>the</strong> surveyors
recognized Villa’s many strengths,
including <strong>the</strong> outstanding
commitment and dedication of <strong>the</strong>
Board, staff, and volunteers in
providing culturally sensitive care
to residents and a wonderful
reputation and strong partnerships
with external organizations.
In mentioning some areas of
improvements, <strong>the</strong> surveyors
talked about needed
refurbishment of <strong>the</strong> building
and continuing to streng<strong>the</strong>n
systems and processes to make
Villa Colombo even more
successful and efficient.

Seniors from Villa Colombo's day programmes get ready to board <strong>the</strong> new bus for a day trip

Serving our residents, serving our community
Among Villa Colombo’s strengths is its
dedicated, caring, compassionate staff who work
everyday to ensure <strong>the</strong> residents who call Villa
Colombo home receive <strong>the</strong> best
possible culturally sensitive care.
This past May,
outstanding staff members
were honoured at a special
ceremony. In particular, four
employees celebrated <strong>the</strong>ir
30th anniversary at <strong>the</strong> Villa:
Anna Carginari started
on May 31, 1977 as a Dietary
Aide and now works in <strong>the</strong>
Activation Department.
Angela Cutulle started on March 22, 1977
as a Health Care Aide and continues to work as
a Health Care Aide.

The VCLA promotes Family, Food, Fun Faith and Fundraising for <strong>the</strong> ultimate benefit
of <strong>the</strong> residents of Villa Colombo.

The golf tournament hosted by <strong>the</strong> Ladies’
Auxiliary was a great success thanks to a very
dedicated committee. The spectacular day filled
with sunshine welcomed over 100 golfers and
guests including Mr. Enzo Cuttini & Grace
Palumbo- Eremita (vice chair of <strong>the</strong> Villa
Colombo Board of Governors). Mr Fernando
Scopa, Executive Director/CEO, Villa Colombo
Services for Seniors, was also present and
carried out <strong>the</strong> duty of Master of Ceremonies.
Members and friends created a fun filled
day. Adding to this atmosphere were
sponsorship partners that generously donated
to <strong>the</strong> cause and promised to return next
year! All participants & guests involved
shared a common goal: to raise funds for <strong>the</strong>
upcoming New Admission Room.

An Afternoon Affair to remember
A celebration of women, exclusively for women!
Villa Charities Foundation’s newest event, An Afternoon
Affair held on April 27, 2008, offered guests an
unforgettable afternoon of presentations aimed at
nurturing <strong>the</strong> body, feeding
<strong>the</strong> mind, and celebrating <strong>the</strong>
spirit and beauty of women
while enjoying traditional high
tea at <strong>the</strong> elegant Windsor
Arms Hotel.
After a brief welcome
from chair Gina Scola, guests
were treated to an informative
presentation by keynote
speaker Dr. Melissa
Hershberg, <strong>the</strong> author of The
Hershberg Diet: Discover
How The 4th Macro Will Help You Shed Pounds and
Beat The Metabolic Syndrome. Following Dr.
Hershberg’s presentation on important lifestyle changes,
fitness trainer Marco Alla led <strong>the</strong> ladies in an interactive
presentation on how to get fit in no time at all!
A magnificent BVLGARI watch courtesy of Jewellery
Sponsor Bandiera Jewelers, was raffled off to one lucky
lady and a beautiful Pianegonda necklace was secretly
placed in one of <strong>the</strong> Mystery Bags. Bandiera Jewellers
also had a selection of jewels from world renowned
brands such as BVLGARI and DAMIANI on display -
Teeing off for a good cause
Chilly temperatures didn’t deter over 120 golfers
as <strong>the</strong>y hit <strong>the</strong> green for <strong>the</strong> 32nd annual Villa
Colombo Golf Tournament
on June 19, 2008. The
fun-filled day successfully
raised $70,000 for Villa
Charities’ services and
programs.
Under <strong>the</strong> leadership
of Co-chairs Bill Arvanitis
and Nick Simone, this
year’s tournament at The
Club at Bond Head offered
golfers a one-of-a-kind golf
experience that included
Italian food and drink,
cocktails with Miss Martini
and espresso to give
golfers’ swing that extra kick!
Following <strong>the</strong> tournament, a fabulous dinner
was enjoyed in <strong>the</strong> Club’s dining room. Prizes were
given out to <strong>the</strong> winning foursome from <strong>the</strong>
International Union of Painters and Allied Trades and
to <strong>the</strong> most honest foursome from Dolce Publishing.
Golfers bid on foursomes from such prestigious
courses as The National Golf Club of Canada and
The team from Downsview Kitchens, including Claudio
D’Uva, centre, get ready to hit <strong>the</strong> links
some pieces were even one-of-a-kind.
“As we celebrated and embraced all that is
wonderful about being a woman – <strong>the</strong> ability to climb
<strong>the</strong> corporate ladder like our fa<strong>the</strong>rs and grandfa<strong>the</strong>rs
while caring for our families
with <strong>the</strong> tenderness and
simplicity of our mo<strong>the</strong>rs and
grandmo<strong>the</strong>rs – we also
raised money for a very
special cause which is close to
my heart,” states Gina Scola,
Chair, An Afternoon Affair.
The event raised just over
$48,000 to help fund <strong>the</strong> new
daycare being built in Villa
Charities’ Casa Abruzzo, an
independent seniors’
residence. This new facility will continue <strong>the</strong> 32-year
tradition of <strong>the</strong> Columbus Centre Daycare - a unique
brand of childcare that blends toge<strong>the</strong>r programs that
ensure proper early childhood development while
teaching Italian customs, traditions and language.

for Villa Colombo and Villa Colombo Vaughan,”

Viva Vino –
Ano<strong>the</strong>r
successful
year!
Wine lovers and Villa
Charities’ supporters ga<strong>the</strong>red on
June 2, 2008 for Viva Vino – a
gastronomic event which offered
guests <strong>the</strong> opportunity to savour
a gourmet meal expertly paired
with <strong>the</strong> finest wines and spirits.
This year’s Viva Vino was
held at Villa Antica Ristorante in
Bolton and was hosted by Inerio
Cinque of J. Cipelli Wines &
Spirits Inc. Each course featured
a wine from Mr. Cinque’s
portfolio, complimented
perfectly by Villa Antica’s
culinary creations.
Guests were entertained by
live musicians and had <strong>the</strong>
chance to take home fine wine
in <strong>the</strong> exclusive wine raffle.
Most importantly, all <strong>the</strong>
proceeds from <strong>the</strong> event were
donated to Villa Charities
Foundation.

bike ride is just ano<strong>the</strong>r great way to be
involved, have a great time with friends and
family, and also raise money for a very good
cause,” states Rudolph Bratty, Chair, Villa
Charities Foundation.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: PIZZA NOVA MAKES A DIFFERENCE
“Taste <strong>the</strong> difference” – is <strong>the</strong> slogan used by <strong>the</strong>
popular pizza chain Pizza Nova. But Pizza Nova and
<strong>the</strong> Primucci family are also making a difference in
thousands of people’s lives through <strong>the</strong>ir generous
charitable work. Among <strong>the</strong> many charities
benefitting from <strong>the</strong>ir generosity is Villa Charities.
Over a decade ago, Pizza Nova held a pizza
tasting competition, with all proceeds going to Villa
Charities. The event was a success and <strong>the</strong>
following year, <strong>the</strong> Primucci family wanted to help
out again, but in a bigger way – thus, <strong>the</strong> annual
Pizza Nova Golf Tournament in support of Villa
Charities was born.
“We always help children’s charities, but by
supporting Villa Charities, we are taking care of
both ends, so to speak – children and seniors,”
explains Domenic Primucci, Executive Vice
President, Pizza Nova. “If we don’t support places
like Villa Colombo, we are going to have a huge
problem in caring for our elderly population – we
need those services.”
This year marked <strong>the</strong> 13th edition of <strong>the</strong>
popular tournament, which keeps getting bigger
each year. Over 240 golfers teed off on two golf
courses on June 10th making <strong>the</strong> 2008 tournament
<strong>the</strong> biggest one yet. The funds raised from <strong>the</strong>
tournament, which total approximately $183,000
was <strong>the</strong> first rider to complete <strong>the</strong> 65km
route in just under 2 hours! Following <strong>the</strong>
ride, everyone celebrated <strong>the</strong> success of <strong>the</strong>
event with a festive BBQ.

since <strong>the</strong> inaugural tournament, have helped Villa
Charities provide its unique brand of culturally
sensitive care, something that Primucci says is vital
in today’s society.
“Seniors who need 24 hour care or meals-onwheels,
plus adults with intellectual disabilities have
<strong>the</strong> care <strong>the</strong>y need thanks to Villa Charities,” states
Primucci. “In today’s society, it’s hard to take care of
aging parents, especially when both children work.
The community needs places like <strong>the</strong> Villa.”
The Pizza Nova story began in 1963 in
Toronto, when a young Italian family opened <strong>the</strong>
very first Pizza Nova restaurant. Today Pizza Nova
has over 120 locations where <strong>the</strong>y pride <strong>the</strong>mselves
on providing a delicious product using fresh
ingredients of <strong>the</strong> best quality.
The company is still run by <strong>the</strong> Primucci
family, headed by Sam Primucci <strong>the</strong> patriarch and
President of Pizza Nova. But business isn’t <strong>the</strong> only
thing that runs in <strong>the</strong> family.
“We have to help our community and I believe
it’s important to show our kids that we support our
communities,” states Primucci. “Even though this
city is multicultural, this is our heritage, our
family and where we’ve come from so we must
support Villa Charities.”

If you’ve been to Villa Colombo Vaughan,
you’ve been greeted by <strong>the</strong> warm smile of Margaret.
Working as a volunteer, Margaret is one of <strong>the</strong>
official greeters and she loves “spreading <strong>the</strong> joy” –
a skill that comes naturally to her.
Small Step / Big Moment
Interviews are never fun, but Carolyn Gaw
explains, “I was more nervous about <strong>the</strong> interviews
with VITA’s self advocates than I was with <strong>the</strong> one
with Human Resources.” She is referring to being
interviewed by VITA members for <strong>the</strong> position of
co-facilitator of VITA’s Rights Group.
When Carolyn applied for <strong>the</strong> position, she
was interviewed by Ann LeBlanc and Nicole
Twigger who are co-chairs of <strong>the</strong> Personal
Development Committee - <strong>the</strong> committee that
oversees <strong>the</strong> training for self advocates within <strong>the</strong>
organization.
Ann and Nicole realized that <strong>the</strong> hiring
process needed to change. They felt that, since
<strong>the</strong> position was for someone to support <strong>the</strong> Self
Advocate group, <strong>the</strong>n Self Advocates should be
involved in <strong>the</strong> interview process. The group met
and came up with 6 questions <strong>the</strong>y wanted to
ask, designed a process to ensure that everyone
who wanted to got a chance to participate and
<strong>the</strong>n set <strong>the</strong> date for <strong>the</strong> interview.
“Self advocates are good at knowing when
someone is genuine, you can’t fool <strong>the</strong>m and <strong>the</strong>
questions <strong>the</strong>y asked were good ones,” explains Carolyn.

In keeping with her role as greeter, Margaret
takes great care with her appearance and loves
having her hair and nails done. She chooses her
clothing carefully and likes to ser off her outfit
with personally chosen jewelry.
Margaret attends one of VITA’s Day
Programmes and likes playing Bingo and helping
out in <strong>the</strong> kitchen. Margaret vacations well and
has traveled to Florida and Cuba. Being in a
wheelchair has not limited her ability to travel, to
greet o<strong>the</strong>rs and it certainly hasn’t diminished her
smile.
One gets <strong>the</strong> feeling that <strong>the</strong>re is much more
to come for Margaret. Like <strong>the</strong> song by her
favourite singer, Elvis, “Your time hasn’t come yet
baby!” VITA is enriched by <strong>the</strong> gifts of women
like Margaret. While we work to assist her with
day to day goals, Margaret enriches us with a
spirit that just won’t quit.
After <strong>the</strong> interview and a chance to meet
Carolyn, <strong>the</strong> group decided to offer her <strong>the</strong>
position.
“Getting a job when you are chosen by <strong>the</strong>
members <strong>the</strong>mselves is an honour,” says Carolyn.
The Personal Development Committee has
now decided that all positions within <strong>the</strong>
committee will involve self advocates on <strong>the</strong>
interview team.
“We believe that this will give VITA members
<strong>the</strong> opportunity to learn about <strong>the</strong> hiring process
and develop <strong>the</strong>ir skills at interviewing and
decision making,” states Manuela Dalla Nora,
Executive Director of VITA. “VITA is committed
to involving self advocates as part of our
processes in whole new ways. This was a small
step but a big moment, it signifies a new way of
doing business.”

The VITA Masters Series – Year 2
The Master’s Series is comprised of 4 lectures that have
been selected to meet <strong>the</strong> needs of service providers as we all
work towards providing <strong>the</strong> best of care.

means, in practical terms, when it comes to facilitating
someone’s dream. Dan is recognized as one of <strong>the</strong> leading
motivational speakers regarding disabilities in <strong>the</strong> world.

Awards, Recognition and Achievement
From <strong>the</strong> very first day that VITA
came into being as an organization in
1986, one of its main goals has been
transitioning people with disabilities from
large facilities into community settings.
In recent years, many of those receiving
VITA’s service come from family homes or
from o<strong>the</strong>r community service. Regardless,
VITA has never stopped being involved in
deinstitutionalization and has never backed
away from <strong>the</strong> core belief that everyone
belongs at home in <strong>the</strong> community. As a
result of its philosophy, VITA has earned a
national reputation as an organization that
serves those with significant needs. VITA
offers several programmes, many unique to
VITA, that have been developed for
specialized populations.
When <strong>the</strong> province of Manitoba began
looking at <strong>the</strong> full closure of <strong>the</strong>ir
institutions <strong>the</strong>y looked to <strong>the</strong> Ontario
experience and contacted <strong>the</strong> Ministry of
Community and Social Services asking to
see a model agency that has been involved
in serving people from <strong>the</strong> institution,
particularly those with significant needs.
The Ministry recommended that <strong>the</strong>y visit
VITA and see its service, talk to its staff and
review its protocols for service provision.
After making not one but two visits to
VITA, Ministry Representative Bill
McNamara invited Manuela Dalla Nora,
VITA’s Executive Director, to travel with
him to Manitoba to speak at a conference
set up for all agencies to attend.
For two days VITA’s work was
presented to over 150 agencies from across
Manitoba. The conference, set up by
Manitoba’s Transition and Community
Support Team from <strong>the</strong> Ministry of Family
Support and Housing, was well attended
and many had questions about how to
provide service to those with difficult
needs. Manuela used several examples of
successes with people with disabilities who
transitioned into VITA carrying significant
needs. The stories told were of individual’s
who were growing, of staff who were
supporting and of an agency constantly
challenged to adapt in order to support.
Only a few days after arriving back,
VITA received an award from <strong>the</strong> Ministry
of Community and Social Services for <strong>the</strong>
work done over <strong>the</strong> last four years in
transitioning people to <strong>the</strong> community
from congregate settings. Manuela
accepted <strong>the</strong> award on behalf of <strong>the</strong>
organization.
“We are definitely honoured to be
recognized,” explains Dalla Nora. “But it’s
<strong>the</strong> ongoing work of achieving our mission
of providing safety, practicing respect and
promoting community that matters <strong>the</strong>
most.”
Articles within <strong>the</strong> VITA Community Living Services section were provided by <strong>David</strong> Hingsburger
November 7th, 2008 – Amy Tabor will be in town to
talk about rights and how organizations can work to ensure
that <strong>the</strong> rights of people with intellectual disabilities are at <strong>the</strong>
centre of service.
A jam packed series that is intended to inspire – <strong>the</strong> goal
of <strong>the</strong> Masters Series is to provide practical information in an
inspirational format.

Family and Friends: A Villa tradition
Mr. and Mrs. Baldessara, residents of Villa Colombo Vaughan, enjoy <strong>the</strong> evening.
Every year, <strong>the</strong> dedicated staff at Villa
Colombo Vaughan organize a family and friends
dinner where residents, <strong>the</strong>ir loved ones and
friends of <strong>the</strong> Villa come toge<strong>the</strong>r to enjoy an
evening of friendship and good food.
This year’s dinner, held <strong>the</strong> evening of May 2,
2008 at Montecassino Place, did not disappoint in
fun, friends and funds as over $30,000 was raised
directly for <strong>the</strong> residents of Villa Colombo Vaughan.
Extending our Care
Villa Colombo Vaughan is fortunate to have many partners in
<strong>the</strong> community who plan and execute fundraising events to benefit
<strong>the</strong> 160 seniors who call <strong>the</strong> new facility home.
On April 18, 2008, friends, family and supporters ga<strong>the</strong>red at
Eagles Nest Golf Club for <strong>the</strong> first annual “Extending our
care…Fundraising Celebration” organized by Extendicare, <strong>the</strong>
professional company hired to manage Villa Colombo Vaughan.
The evening featured a gourmet dinner prepared by Executive
Chef Shonah Chalmers and an impressive live auction. By <strong>the</strong> end
of <strong>the</strong> night, $200,000 was raised for all of Extendicare’s partners.
“We are extremely delighted to be <strong>the</strong> recipient of $20,000 from
<strong>the</strong> very first Extending our Care fundraising celebration,” states Sam
Ciccolini, Chair, Villa Colombo Vaughan. “These funds will go a
long way to help our residents enjoy <strong>the</strong> best care in a culturally
sensitive environment <strong>the</strong>y call home.”

Gerry Sevier – Landscapes of Europe
This past June, Gerry Sevier, one of Canada’s premier artists,
showcased a collection of landscapes depicting various countries
in Europe at <strong>the</strong> Carrier Art Gallery.
From June 2nd to July 2nd visitors to Columbus Centre
were transported to <strong>the</strong> waterways of Venice, <strong>the</strong> shores of Spain
and <strong>the</strong> gardens of Sweden in Sevier’s realistic works of art.
Sevier was born in Hamilton, but now makes his home in
Toronto with his wife and four children. Since graduating from
<strong>the</strong> Ontario College of Art and Design in 1956, Sevier has
enjoyed much success as an artist but also as an illustrator.
Throughout his illustrious career, Sevier has received
numerous awards and accolades, including <strong>the</strong> Lifetime
Achievement Award for illustration from <strong>the</strong> Canadian

Sevier’s collection at <strong>the</strong> Carrier Art Gallery was <strong>the</strong> result of
numerous trips throughout Europe which included a cruise to
Venice and Istanbul in 2001 and a trip to <strong>the</strong> vineyards of
Umbria and Tuscany in 2003. Most recently, Sevier visited Sicily
and Malta.
“I’ve always been interested in sunsets and <strong>the</strong> special
atmosphere <strong>the</strong>y create,” explains Sevier. “I tried to capture
<strong>the</strong>se scenes in <strong>the</strong>ir natural light, which I believe is most
beautiful.”

Canadiana by Pavel Janacek
Currently on display in <strong>the</strong> Carrier Art Gallery is a
collection of beautiful and vibrant oil paintings by local artist
Pavel Janacek.
The artist describes his work with musical undertones:
“The artist’s brushes are his instruments, his paints are <strong>the</strong>
notes he plays and <strong>the</strong> painting is his symphony.”
Born in Czechoslovakia, Pavel immigrated to Canada
when he was 19 years old. He pursued a career as an
electrician at George Brown College, but his life changed when
he met a painter who introduced him to oil painting and
recognized his natural talent. Since <strong>the</strong>n, Pavel has spent his
life painting, oftentimes on <strong>the</strong> road – he has painted over four
hundred canvases, mostly landscapes, which can be found all
over <strong>the</strong> world.
Pavel’s collection on display at <strong>the</strong> Carrier Gallery
immediately attracts visitor’s attention, beautifully expressing
his love for nature.
“In each of my paintings, I was experiencing progress with my
ability to cherish nature and to show her beauty,” explains Pavel.
In keeping with <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me of nature, Pavel also ensures his
exhibit is eco-friendly - most of <strong>the</strong> frames are hand made by
Pavel using recycled material found throughout <strong>the</strong> city.

Fall. Renowned Italian artist Renato Sartoretto will showcase an
exhibit of oil paintings which he will paint in Toronto in <strong>the</strong>
month leading up to <strong>the</strong> show.
From September 14 to October 1, 2008, <strong>the</strong> upper gallery
will be transformed with <strong>the</strong>se works inspired by Italy, but
made in Canada!

Performers wow <strong>the</strong> packed crowd at Columbus Centre
Opera Collegium
It was a bustling day at Columbus Centre on May 25th, 2008. In addition to
Giro T.O. in <strong>the</strong> morning and <strong>the</strong> unveiling of <strong>David</strong> on Dufferin in <strong>the</strong> afternoon,
music lovers were treated to a powerful performance by Opera Collegium, a nonprofit
organization whose main purpose is to establish a school to offer both training
courses and academic courses, designed to provide top-level qualifications and
specialization to qualified opera singers and to prepare <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong> interpretation and
performance of <strong>the</strong> Italian opera repertoire in all its styles.
Under <strong>the</strong> skillful direction of Maestro Donato Di Stefano, master classes were
hosted at <strong>the</strong> Columbus Centre during <strong>the</strong> month of May, culminating in <strong>the</strong> gala
performance. Selected participants performed for a packed house of invited guests
and artistic directors of various opera companies and agents.
Bravo!
Adult Literacy Program
The Columbus Centre has always been dedicated to providing <strong>the</strong> best in culture,
fitness and <strong>the</strong> arts to <strong>the</strong> community, with a long history of service with a special
focus on learning and education. This tradition continues with <strong>the</strong> new Adult
Literacy Program offered by Columbus Centre beginning in September 2008.
Along with language courses offered to both adults and children, <strong>the</strong> Columbus Centre
aims to include <strong>the</strong> older citizens of <strong>the</strong> community in order to help <strong>the</strong>m improve literacy
skills, as well as tutoring in reading and writing, both in Italian and English.
Computer courses will also be offered to facilitate adult students’ understanding
of basic computer operations such as typing, software applications, and basic
functions like turning <strong>the</strong> computer on and off.
The sole aim of <strong>the</strong>se courses is to improve <strong>the</strong> lifestyle of <strong>the</strong> community’s
mature learners in today’s fast-paced society. Simple English literary skills could
impact <strong>the</strong> students’ lives favorably, especially health-wise (for example, in following
directions for prescription drugs) as well as everyday situations such as banking, or
filling in forms.
Students in <strong>the</strong> Italian Classes will benefit from tutoring in reading and writing,
helping <strong>the</strong>m enhance skills in <strong>the</strong>ir mo<strong>the</strong>r tongue, practice writing letters and cards, or

Centro Scuola\Columbus Centre has
organized a new quality program entirely
designed for preschool children to enhance <strong>the</strong>ir

parents’ participation to help toddlers develop

Mommy/Daddy & Me and Kinder Computer
Italian: Mommy/Daddy & Me, are designed to
enrich your child’s learning experience with a
series of interactive games (matching images,
counting, recognizing colours and forms) and
are offered both in Italian and English.
All of <strong>the</strong> programs allow toddlers to build
social skills, and encourage <strong>the</strong>ir independence
and autonomy while allowing parents to spend
quality time with <strong>the</strong>ir children in a relaxing,

Hats off to ano<strong>the</strong>r successful season
It was a cool day in June, but inside <strong>the</strong>
Earl Haig Secondary School Auditorium
where <strong>the</strong> 2008 Columbus Centre/Centro
Scuola School of Dance
Year End Show was
taking place, things were
heating up!
Sabrina Chieffallo,
<strong>the</strong> Modern Dance
instructor, opened <strong>the</strong>
show with a special
performance dedicated
to her students who
watched in awe and
admiration as she
danced a beautiful
contemporary routine.
The first half of <strong>the</strong>
show paid a tribute to <strong>the</strong> popular movie of
<strong>the</strong> musical Singin’ in <strong>the</strong> Rain, involving
different genres of modern dance including
Jazz, Ballet and Jazz, Tap, Broadway and
Junior Hip Hop. There were o<strong>the</strong>r classes
that danced to <strong>the</strong>ir own tune. The senior
and advanced Hip Hop students entertained
<strong>the</strong> audience with some daring tricks and
intricate moves. The boy’s Hip Hop class
Spring is in <strong>the</strong> air
The arrival of spring means flowers in bloom, warmer, sunnier
wea<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> annual Centro Scuola / Columbus Centre School of
Music Spring Recitals.
The event, held in <strong>the</strong> Carrier Art Gallery (Lower Gallery) over
five nights, showcased <strong>the</strong> very talented students of our dedicated
teachers: Tetyana Ivchenko-Carino (voice), Anatoliy Ivchenko
(piano), Gisele Kulak (vocal), Enrica Chieffallo (piano), Antonia De
Wolfe (piano), Joe Di Girolamo (piano, organ, woodwind), Mila
Germanowsky (piano), Sal Jannetta (classical and electric guitar)
Marco Marrone (piano, woodwind, brass), Jani Papadimitri (violin,
piano), and Scott Singh (classical and electric guitar).
Each night parents, family and friends supported and praised
each performer with heart-felt applause. Some students stood out
giving outstanding performances. Bro<strong>the</strong>rs Thomas and Alexander
Arthur performed two entertaining duets: “I Want to Hold Your
Hand” (Beatles) on flute and guitar and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> romantic “Tango
delle rose” on guitar and accordion. Sisters Stephanie and Sandra
Leutri played a wonderful duet of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” on
trombone and French horn. Newcomer Adamo Iantosca played a
lovely rendition of “La donna è mobile” on his electric guitar.
Orlando Siciliano was <strong>the</strong> perfect trumpeter playing Benedict’s
“Carnival of Venice.” The young and very talented Anton Vomisecu

(new this year) looked like pros as <strong>the</strong>y
moon walked onstage break dancing and
doing headstands with <strong>the</strong> littlest effort.

goes to Ariana Simone who was able to advance to <strong>the</strong> senior level of dance within 6 months of taking <strong>the</strong>

right) Philip Amador, Giovanni Bruccoleri, Pietro Bruccoleri and Michael Morra. Though <strong>the</strong>y were beginners, <strong>the</strong>ir
daring headstands and freezes received <strong>the</strong> loudest applause from both audience and performers alike.
Memorable was <strong>the</strong> charming and sassy
performance given by <strong>the</strong> youngest of <strong>the</strong>
jazz classes, Jazz I, who owned <strong>the</strong> stage
dancing to “It’s Raining Men.” The senior
Jazz III class danced a magnificent routine,
set to <strong>the</strong> popular song, “The Prayer”
(Andrea Boccelli and Celine Dion). The first
half of <strong>the</strong> show came to an electrifying end
with a striking rendition of “Victory” from
The Lord of <strong>the</strong> Dance performed by <strong>the</strong>
Tap class.
Keeping with tradition and elegance,
<strong>the</strong> second half of <strong>the</strong>
show featuring <strong>the</strong> ballet
classes was inspired by
Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s
classic The Sleeping
Beauty. A special
mention goes to <strong>the</strong> Pre-
Intermediate II class who
looked like prima
ballerinas with <strong>the</strong>ir
perfect lines and use of
demi pointe. Soloist
Stefanie Cava looked in
perfect form as she
danced with great agility
and beauty. The show closed with <strong>the</strong> coda
and finale, which included all levels of ballet
dancing toge<strong>the</strong>r on stage ending with a
stunning tableau. Noteworthy were <strong>the</strong>ir

artistic director.

engaged <strong>the</strong> audience as he performed “Whistler Tune” (R. Fleming)
on his violin.
There was quite an impressive amount of budding concert
pianists. Ernesto Lecuona’s challenging Malagueña seemed like a
walk in a park for Joseph Guerra whose hands raced all over <strong>the</strong>
keyboard. Tiffany Taghabon played “Sonatina in C Major” flawlessly
and effortlessly. Last year’s Kiwanis Music Festival winner, Natalie
Pilla played an excellent “Sonatina in G Major” and <strong>the</strong>n returned to
play (and sing!) <strong>the</strong> inspirational song “From a Distance.” Sarah
Farahat brought <strong>the</strong> audience on a wonderful musical journey
performing Chopin’s “Prelude in E Minor” and “Colours of <strong>the</strong>
Wind” from Disney’s Pocahontas.
The gifted Loren Graziano sang a spectacular rendition of
Puccini’s “Nessun dorma,” leaving <strong>the</strong> audience in utter awe. Also
leaving an impression on <strong>the</strong> audience were bro<strong>the</strong>r and sister duo
Mat<strong>the</strong>w and Victoria Tissi performing <strong>the</strong> charming “Shout to <strong>the</strong>
Lord” (Zschech). Mat<strong>the</strong>w returned later onstage with a lovely “Cosi,
amor…” (Stradella). Both siblings are members of <strong>the</strong> Canadian
Opera Company Children’s Chorus.
As a token of appreciation, a special reception was prepared for
students, teachers and guests. Congratulations to all performers!

The delightful Schola Cantorum singers opened <strong>the</strong>ir annual
Spring Concert with a selection of traditional Italian songs sure to
please <strong>the</strong> audience on Sunday, June 8, 2008, in <strong>the</strong> auditorium of
<strong>the</strong> Dante Alighieri Academy. Under <strong>the</strong> guidance of three directors,
Jessica Scarlato, Danielle MacMillan and Angelina Gulla, <strong>the</strong> choirs
met weekly in two sections, one at <strong>the</strong> Columbus Centre and one
at Divine Infant School in Maple. This concert brought <strong>the</strong>m
toge<strong>the</strong>r, blending over 30 voce bianche in a celebration of song.
Danielle is studying music in Italy this summer, so Jessica and
Angelina directed <strong>the</strong> performance, accompanied on <strong>the</strong> piano by
Anatoly Ivchenko and Lisa Passalaqua, assisted by Natalie Ciarallo
and Marc Caporiccio.
Jazz dance classes taught by Sabrina Chieffallo also performed
in <strong>the</strong> concert, repeating <strong>the</strong>ir popular successes in <strong>the</strong> Christmas
concert and <strong>the</strong> Spring dance recital. Vocal music specialists
provided thrilling solo and duet performances. Theresa Wilson
sang Sebben crudele. Andrea Gambardella sang “Coraggio, ben
mio”, followed by a duet with Ines Palazzo and Renzo Martinello
performing <strong>the</strong> popular “Vivo per lei”. The afternoon program

Cultural Arts in a dinner on
Saturday, June 7, 2008 to honour
this famous singer for his long
career in Opera.
The students who now
have <strong>the</strong> benefit of his Master
Classes have gained significant
musical knowledge from his
careful attention to <strong>the</strong>ir
developing vocal technique. As
well, he provides career
guidance to <strong>the</strong>se young singers,
drawing on his international
experience in <strong>the</strong> rare world of
professional opera.
The annual Ermanno
Mauro Dinner attracts
participation from students,
opera patrons, o<strong>the</strong>r musicians,
and supporters of <strong>the</strong> cultural
events hosted by Centro Scuola.
Two very special literary events were held
in <strong>the</strong> gracious setting of <strong>the</strong> Columbus Centre’s
Carrier Art Gallery in <strong>the</strong> Spring. The
enthusiastic audiences in attendance agree that
<strong>the</strong>se were stellar cultural presentations for <strong>the</strong>
Italian Canadian community.
The National Poetry Month evening took
place Tuesday, April 15, 2008. The evening was
hosted by Centro Scuola/Columbus Centre and
<strong>the</strong> Dante Society of Toronto. The <strong>the</strong>me this
year was “Poetry without Borders,” a perfect
description of <strong>the</strong> work by our Italian Canadian
writers. The readers for this evening included
Pier Giorgio Di Cicco – Poet Laureate of <strong>the</strong>
City of Toronto, Gianna Patriarca, Joseph
Maviglia, and Bruna Di Giuseppe-Bertoni. All
four of <strong>the</strong>se poets have earned praise for <strong>the</strong>ir
published works. As creative artists, <strong>the</strong>y each
describe <strong>the</strong>ir own experience of immigration
included several fine piano pieces showing <strong>the</strong> talent of Christian
Ternamin and Joseph Guerra, both taught by Antonia De Wolfe,
and Alessandro Raimondo, a student of Joe Di Girolamo. The
bro<strong>the</strong>rs Thomas and Alexander Arthur played a flute and guitar
version of <strong>the</strong> Beatles’ tune, “I wanna hold your hand”. Adam
Macciocchi-Lancia, also a student of Sal Janetta, performed two
numbers, “Les marionettes” and “Sonando”.
This marvelous concert closed with a finale of choral music
sung by <strong>the</strong> Schola Cantorum. The selections included a rendition
of “Lean on Me”, featuring Connie Christou as soloist. The concert
ended with <strong>the</strong> beautiful Andrea Bocelli song, “Because We Believe”
(Ama Credi e Vai). Alberto Di Giovanni, Director of Centro Scuola,
thanked <strong>the</strong> parents, <strong>the</strong> teachers and choir directors, and <strong>the</strong>
performers for <strong>the</strong>ir participation in <strong>the</strong> music programs offered by
Centro Scuola and <strong>the</strong> Cultural Arts programs at <strong>the</strong> Columbus
Centre. Many long hours of lessons and practice go into each
performance. The sound of applause and Bravo! make it all
worthwhile.

o<strong>the</strong>r new arrivals in Canada.
On June 4, 2008, Toronto writer Darlene
Madott launched her latest book of short stories,
entitled Making Olives and O<strong>the</strong>r Family Secrets
(Longbridge: Montreal, 2008). The occasion also
introduced Licia Canton’s book, Almond Wine
and Fertility as well as Fast Forward and O<strong>the</strong>r
Stories by Delia De Santis. These books are also
published by Longbridge in Montreal. All three
authors read stories from <strong>the</strong>ir collections, and all
were well received by <strong>the</strong> large audience.
Longbridge publisher Domenic Cusmano
attended <strong>the</strong> event, ensuring that <strong>the</strong>re were
plenty of copies of <strong>the</strong> new books on sale and
presented copies for <strong>the</strong> Italian Canadian
collection in <strong>the</strong> Alberto Di Giovanni Library in
Columbus Centre.
