JOHN RADFORD
Welcome to Crawley Town’s
co-chairmen Eben Smith
and Preston Johnson to One Call
Stadium for today’s match.
I know you’ll share my
disappointment at seeing two key
decisions from the officials go against
us in our Easter Monday fixture at
Carlisle.
With that aside, our performance in
Cumbria was encouraging, especially
in the first-half.
We have four fascinating final fixtures
of the regular season now ahead of us
and there is all to play for.
Despite our recent two losses, these
next four games will doubtless be
treated as individual cup finals.
We have a very good group of players
at this club and we know that we
have the ability in our squad to earn
a place in the top seven positions in
Sky Bet League Two’s final standings.
For us, as supporters, directors, staff
and fans, our job is to support Nigel
along with his staff and players as
part of one unified goal of finishing as
high as we possibly can in the league
table.
As is often the case in football,
there will doubtless be more twists
and turns to come in the final four
matches.
We all have a part to play and we
shall head into these final four games
with our continued, unified mentality.
In times of trial, we shall not be
discouraged.
We shall support and encourage our
management, staff and players at
every opportunity in our pursuit for
promotion.
Together, we shall give everything
we have.
NIGEL
CLOUGH
Welcome to Crawley Town
running than in the Northampton
manager John Yems, along Town match at the start of the month,
with the management, players, which was an intense, physical game
staff and supporters from West for us.
Sussex for today’s match.
The last ten days have highlighted
to all clubs the impact of refereeing
mistakes at both ends of the table.
For us at Carlisle, decisions cost us
three points. We scored a perfectly
good goal, which went over the
line, but wasn’t given, and then the
Carlisle player is clearly a yard offside
for their decisive goal.
We played well, controlled the
game and created chances. We were
wasteful at times but those two,
crucial, aforementioned decisions
were out of our control.
Our running statistics were
exceptional at Carlisle; 15% higher
in sprinting and 20% in high-speed
Our team cannot try any harder or
run any more.
We’ll endeavour to keep up these
high levels as we head into two
successive home games.
This has been a rollercoaster of
a season; to start so well, to then
experience the dip which saw us
second from bottom in the table
to now be in there challenging is
incredible for us all.
Stick with us. We’ll do everything we
can - as our players did at Carlisle and
we have done in the majority of this
season – to get us in the top seven.
We’ll be giving every ounce to try and
get us there.
Midfielder
named PFA
Community
Champion
Mansfield Town Football in the
Community are delighted to name
experienced Stags’ midfielder
Stephen Quinn as their PFA
Community Champion for the
2021/2022 campaign.
The 36-year-old has been in fine
form this term. With his invaluable
experience, which includes playing
in the Premier League, the midfielder
has shown excellent leadership both
on and off the pitch this season.
The former Sheffield United man has
been given this annual award for his
community work, as part of Mansfield
Town Football in the Community’s
Premier League Primary Stars
delivery.
NEWSDESK
Stephen recently visited Lake View
Primary school with fellow teammate
George Maris. The duo visited the
school whilst Community coaches
were delivering one of their Primary
Stars sessions, which led into a Q & A
session with the participants.
Community manager Gary Shaw said:
“Stephen took great pride in the visit
as he led the session himself.
“He encouraged the participants to
engage in the Q & A activity as he
noticed some were too shy to put
their hands up.
“He shared stories of his career and
answered any questions about what
it’s like growing up as a footballer.”
Stephen also participated in World
Book Day and the Stags’ number 16
was filmed reading out a question
for young Mansfield supporters
to answer, in partnership with the
National Literacy Trust.
“Mansfield Town is a communitybased
club,” Stephen said.
“By supporting the community,
you can tell there’s a comradery
between supporters and players and
everything about the club.
“It’s great to come down and visit the
school and put our own time back
into it.”
Over the final few months of the
academic year, Stephen and other
first team players will be working
with Mansfield Town Football in the
Community again, visiting other PLPS
partner schools as well as additional
projects that the community
organise.
Gary added: “Taking time out of
their day to visit these sessions is
vital in bringing the club and local
communities together, and Stephen
Quinn has led by example with this.”
The PFA’s director of corporate
social responsibility, John Hudson,
congratulated the midfielder on the
accolade.
He said: “The PFA has been
immensely proud of the outstanding
efforts of players during a very
difficult season once again and we
feel they should be recognised for
their support and involvement in the
local community.
“We would like to offer our
congratulations to this season’s
recipient of the 2021/22 PFA
Community Champion Award.”
Stags finish runners-up in
academy tournament
A squad of Mansfield Town
academy players competed at
a tournament at Brooke House
college, Market Harborough, this
month – finishing runners-up at
the event.
Organised by the college’s
technical director, Micky Adams,
the tournament consisted of eight
teams, split into two separate group
stages.
On Monday, the young Stags played
their three group matches. Mansfield
faced Doncaster Rovers, Brooke
House College (team one) and
Hungarian side, REAC.
Twenty Mansfield Town academy
boys were included in the squad
across the two days of tournament
football.
The event’s layout consisted of
45-minute matches. The Stags
recorded a fine 2-0 victory over REAC
in their opener, courtesy of a brace
from attacker McKeal Abdullah.
Another challenging test followed;
Mansfield played Brooke House
with a youthful side that consisted
of numerous under-15s. The
youngsters performed admirably
against a powerful side that have
a record of players moving on to
Premier League academies.
In the final group match, against
Doncaster, goals from Curtis Davies
and Abdullah ensured Mansfield
progressed through to Tuesday’s
semi-final.
Mansfield faced Hull City in the semifinal
and performed excellently as
15-year-old defender Cormac Maher
and Abdullah scored in a 2-0 victory
to see the Stags reach the final.
In the final, Mansfield again faced
Brooke House College (team one)
with a line-up of players that have
played the majority of this season’s
Youth Alliance League matches. The
Stags narrowly lost 1-0 but produced
a superb display against tough
opposition.
Professional development phase
lead, Sam Collins spoke about how
well the Mansfield squad played
across the two days.
“All the players are not at school
at this moment so they’re training
every day with us,” he said.
“Socially, the lads from other age
groups are getting to know each
other and the way they played
and represented the club was an
absolute credit.
“I’d like to give a special mention to
McKeal Abdullah who was top scorer
in the tournament and was voted
player of the tournament by the
panel of voters.”
THE
ACADEMY
Mansfield Town under-18s’ holding
midfielder Jonty Bouch reflects on
his second year in the youth team
and the experience he has been able
to pass on to the first-year players in
the squad…
think we had a great start to
I the season. I’ve enjoyed every
moment of it, and I’ve learned a lot
from the coaches and loads from
the other players as well. We have a
good brotherhood in the changing
rooms and on the pitch.
We have various talks with the
coaches, and so I’ve learned lots of
things off the pitch as well as on the
pitch. The coaches have helped me
develop my decision-making skills on
the ball, helped me to relax more on
the ball and have built my fitness up
when coming in and out of injuries.
In the first year, I was given the
captain’s armband for most of the
season so that really developed my
leadership skills and I have been
able to use them in my second year
when the captain’s armband was
passed to one of the first years. I’ve
been able to pass on my leadership
skills and that has helped me on the
pitch. Knowing how to motivate my
teammates has allowed us to play
and perform better on the pitch.
From last season to this season, the
link-up play has definitely improved
a lot. The tempo we use has seen us
play a lot of one-touch football. A few
new first years have come in and are
quite technical and that has been
very good when we are on the front
foot, and it has allowed us to create a
lot more chances.
When the younger players came in,
the bond wasn’t there straight away,
but after a week or so, we were all
like best mates and got along so well.
I love everyone to bits, so the bond
with the whole squad this season has
been fantastic.
You can see it on the pitch as
everyone is in tune with each other
which helps us to play better. If one
of the lads is not having the best day
on the pitch, we know how to pick
them up a bit because we have
got to know everyone as a
person and as a player, so it
is important to have a good
relationship.
Charlie Carter is the captain
now, and I can remember
when George Cooper did
it with me when he passed
the captain’s armband
down. Being able to pass
on my leadership skills
to Charlie and seeing him
develop into more of a leader
has been fantastic.
INTO ROOM 101…
PEOPLE:
Bad manners, like when you hold a door open for
someone and they don’t say ‘thank you’ or letting
someone pass before you in a car and they don’t
give you a thank you wave.
FASHION:
Men wearing handbags. Definitely not for me.
SPORT:
I’m not a fan of VAR. I much preferred chatting
about decisions the referees or assistant got
wrong. I always think your luck levels out over a
season.
MODERN LIFE:
People spending far too much time videoing
what they’re doing rather just enjoying the
moment.
WILDCARD:
I don’t like some politicians and all the rubbish they
come out with while they’re looking after themselves.
Mansfield Town Ladies’ manager
Andi Bell positively looks forward to
challenging for two trophies at the
end of the season with her side in the
finals of both the County Cup and the
League Plate.
think we played really well
I against Rotherham in the league
and we scored some good goals
with some good build-up play in
the first-half. In the second-half
it was a bit disappointing that we
did not extend our lead, but we did
the job and achieved our target.
We will be playing Rotherham in
the League Plate final. Both teams
will be heading into the game full of
confidence, but we have certainly got
the mental edge over them. We’ll go
out there and play to the best of our
abilities and, hopefully, get the win.
In the league fixtures, we have just
got to put on as much pressure as
we can on the teams around us by
winning all of our games, and also
hope that those sides drop points.
This means that anything is still
feasible. This goal and focus will
hopefully help our mindset because
we know what we’ve got to do to try
and achieve those targets.
I’m really pleased with how the
season has gone, but the one
frustrating thing is that those games
which we have not won is probably
because we have not taken our
chances.
No teams have outplayed us, and I
still believe that when we are at our
best we can be right up there and
no-one can beat us.
I think we have had a lot of things
thrown at us this season. We lost our
main goalkeeper, we’ve had a couple
of players out with injury, not to
mention COVID-19. We’ve had a lot to
contend with, and to still be up there
challenging in two cup finals is very
pleasing.
Anyone will know that against
Nottingham Forest in the County Cup
we are probably the underdogs. I just
want us to go out there and give a
really good account of ourselves as
we have done a fantastic job to get to
the final of that competition.
It is 11 versus 11 so anything can
happen, but I want my players
to go out there and enjoy the
occasion of playing against
Forest.
When we entered the
Plate this season, we were
expecting nothing less
than to win it and that
was the goal. I still feel the
same way as I did at the
start of the season and, as
mentioned earlier, I think
that we have the edge over
Rotherham.
the coaches and begin to interact with them as soon as they
THE GOLDEN ARCHIVE
‘HIS STORY’
PROJECTING A PARADE OF GLORIOUS DAYS FROM
THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND.
From the sublime to the ridiculous
and everything in between, we look
back with a Stags’ hero of the past,
focusing on memorable behind-thescenes
moments that they will never
forget.
Continuing the season with ‘His-
Story’, is former defender and
midfielder Jamie Clarke. Jamie
began his career with Mansfield’s
youth set-up before progressing to
the first team, playing 33 times for
the club, and netting one goal.
have lots of stories from my
“I time at Mansfield – I was there
for five years, and I sometimes
think I was more prolific off the
pitch than I was on it with some of
the escapades I had.
One story that stands out involves
Neil MacKenzie – and how he once
tackled a snake.
This particular incident followed an
important away match against Hull
City. Macca was a substitute on this
occasion but came on for us and
scored the only goal of the game in a
1-0 victory. As you can imagine, the
lads were buoyant with the result
and, upon returning to Mansfield, we
all went out to celebrate the win.
Whenever we went out, and if any of
the lads needed somewhere to stay,
they often stayed at mine. Anyway,
the morning after the night before
- at 7am – there was an incessant
banging at the front door. Naturally
I wondered who it was, so I looked
out of my bedroom window and
saw Macca – still with his club suit
on but with a big pot on his arm. I
asked him what had happened, and
he replied, in his Birmingham accent,
‘I tackled a snake’.
Apparently, he’d been back to Rhys
Day’s house with a number of others
to carry on with the celebrations.
Macca had spotted Rhys’ pet snake
and – trying to be funny – ventured
towards it but tripped on the carpet
and fell into the glass cabinet that the
snake was kept in and fracturing his
arm in the process.
This highlighted the quick
turnaround in Macca’s fortunes - from
the euphoria of scoring the winning
goal to, hours later, ending up in
hospital with a fractured arm.
Another story I recall is when, at the
end of the promotion season, the
bus broke down during the open-top
parade around town. One particular
road appeared to be too steep for the
bus to drive up so, after it had stalled,
myself, Andy White, Bobby Hassell,
and a few others got out to give it a
push and managed to get it going
again so we could all then enjoy the
rest of the parade!
The club’s sponsor at the time was VK
and it transpired there was so much
of it on board that the bus hadn’t
made it up the hill due to too much
weight!”
