Welcome to the first issue of

It has been quite a few weeks for us... We won
an award. The team are delighted to have
claimed the prize for community support at the
Business Growth Awards. This is a major result
for the target team as less than three years ago
the magazine was just an idea scribbled on
a piece of paper and a dream that we could
start something that might make a difference,
however small.
I want to say a big thanks to our clients, my
team and of course you the reader for embracing
the magazine from the start.
There are big things planned for the magazine
this year and we hope you continue to enjoy
reading. If you are a local charity and good
cause and would like us to help you get your
message to the right people completely free of
charge then please get in touch and we can help
you through our community partners scheme.
If you are a local business and would like to
work with an award winning team to help you
achieve your marketing goals then please get in
touch, we would love to help.
Spring is around the corner and we have a few
exciting things happening over the next few
months but for now I hope you enjoy the magazine
and if you do choose to use one of our
advertisers please mention Target as it helps the
magazine to grow.
Until next month..

Method
Add your flour, salt and dairy-free butter to a bowl and rub them together with your fingertips
until the mixture takes on an appearance similar to breadcrumbs.
Add your caster sugar, dairy-free milk and currants and stir, before bringing it together into
a ball in your hands.
Dust your rolling surface with the flour kept behind and roll the dough out onto it, until its
around 5mm thick.
Use a cutter of around 7 cm before lifting the circles from the dough. Ball the scraps together
again and repeat this process until the dough has been used up.
Take a heavy based frying pan, a cast iron pan or (if you have one perhaps as a family heirloom)
a traditional bake stone and place over a medium head. Add as many of the cakes as
will fit on the pan and allow to sit there for around 3-4 minutes per side.
Toss in sugar while still warm and then allow to cool.

Torfaen Barry
Standing with Ukraine
Written by Oliver Eddolls
The horrors we’re witnessing in Ukraine
are overwhelming. Putting one’s own
self in the shoes of the millions fleeing
the war is challenging for many of
us living in Torfaen, who have never
experienced anything close to the heart
ache, fear and loss of those brave people
ripped from the place they call home.
Perhaps it’s this feeling of privilege;
coupled with helplessness in the face
of what looks to be growing into a
monumental humanitarian crisis; that
has caused many across the UK to ask;
quite earnestly; what small part they
can play in helping? From donations to
collective displays of support within the
community; here are a few ways that,
should you feel able to in what have
proven difficult times for us all, you can
do your bit to help those in need.
DEC Ukraine Appeal
(donation.dec.org.uk)
The DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee)
is an umbrella group of UK
charities, including but not limited to
Oxfam, Actionaid and the British Red
Cross. Many of the charities operating
under the umbrella of the DEC are running
individual appeals. By donating to
the DEC appeal, you can help provide
food, water, shelter and healthcare to
those who need it most. Every pound
donated to the appeal will be matched
by the UK government.
Additionally, by selecting the ‘Gift Aid’
option you can add 25% to your donation,
as well as donating directly online,
you can also give via the Post Office.
With Ukraine
(crowdfunder.co.uk)
You can also donate to Ukraine via
the Ukrainian Embassy. Additionally,
should wish to go the extra mile,
this method allows you to start a
fundraising appeal, either on behalf
of UNICEF, The DEC, or your own
personal appeal, all through the site
Crowdfunder.
Médecins Sans Frontières
(msf.org.uk/secure/donate)
MSF have been aiding those affected
by conflict or humanitarian crises
for the last fifty years. Providing
both medical supplies and emergency
medical training, Médecins Sans
Frontières needs help in meeting
the needs of Ukrainians fleeing the
conflict to Poland and other neighbouring
countries.
Donating Essential Supplies
There are co-ordinated efforts across
South Wales to donate supplies such
as toiletries, clothes, linen and baby
items to Ukrainian families. Many
of these appeals have reached their
capacity of donations, so it is wise to
Target Talks
check online for those still accepting
donations. You can do this by visiting
community Facebook groups in
your area.
If you’re struggling to find donation
centres in your area, the site refugease.org
allows you to buy vital
bundles and care packages, donated
straight to those who need them
most in Hungary.
What to think about when donating
If you decide to donate money to an organisation not listed above; it is important
that you check the reliability of the organisation you choose. You can do this by
searching the name or number of the organisation on The Government Charity Register,
available online at www.gov.uk/find-charity-information.
If you manage to find a donation centre still accepting physical goods; it’s advisable
to only donate new clothes and linen. This prevents the centres from having to
spend time sanitising the goods ready to be shipped over.

Recipes
Let’s Have Lunch
Sausage, Mustard Mash and Ale & Onion Gravy
Method
Mash
Peel the potatoes and cut into chunks.
Tip the spuds into a pan and cover with
boiling water. Boil for 20 Minutes or
Until Soft. Drain them in a colander and
leave to steam dry before placing them
back into the pan.
Add your milk, butter and mustard and
season to taste. Mash thoroughly until
smooth and keep them warm for serving.
Sausages and Gravy
Fry your sausages in a pan until the skin
has browned. Remove them from the pan
and set to one side.
Ingredients
Sausages and Gravy
6 Cumberland Sausages
3 Large White Onions
One bottle of Ale (Of your choosing)
1 Tablespoons of Brown Sugar
200ml of Chicken Stock
2 Large Cloves of Garlic
Handful of Black Peppercorns
1 Tablespoon Honey
Bouqet Garni (optional)
Mash
500g of Potatoes
30g of Butter
30ml of Milk
1 Teaspoon English Mustard
In that same pan, add your onions (roughly chopped) and add your sugar and season
well with salt and pepper. After a couple of minutes, add your garlic cloves after
crushing them with the flat of a kitchen knife on a chopping board.
Once your Onions have caramelised and are brown and soft, replace your sausages
into the pan and add the bottle of ale, chicken stock and peppercorns.
Allow this to simmer for 45 minutes to an hour, stirring regularly. A nice touch
can be adding a bouquet garni if you have one to hand, but this isn’t essential.
Half way through reducing; add your squeeze of honey. This counteracts the bitterness
from the Ale.
Once your gravy has reduced to a nice consistency, serve the sausages and a generous
helping of the gravy on top of your creamy mustard mash.

The Ipcress File
(ITV)
Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders, Gangs of London, A Prayer Before Dawn) takes up the reins
of Len Deighton’s Harry Palmer in this new ITV series. The Ipcress File is one of the
classic novels of its genre and, without wishing to sound crass, there could not be a
more opportune time to bring cold war era paranoia back to our screens.
Despite the new series deviating a fair bit from the original 1962 source material,
Joe Cole brings the character to life superbly, in much the same mould as the 1965
film adaptation staring Sir Michael Caine, and with several deliberate references to
it; most prominently the black, thick framed glasses worn by Palmer throughout.
A suitably complex plot keeps an excellent pace throughout and the series boasts
supporting performances from Lucy Boynton (Endeavour, Murder on The Orient
Express, Bohemian Rhapsody) and the perennially superb Tom Hollander.
A theme maintained by the series from the novel, is its fantastic exploration of class
politics in a fairly unique literary setting. Its original author Deighton left a writing
job with the James Bond franchise, and created a working-class, gentleman spy as a
counterpart to Fleming’s Bond and later Le Carré’s Smiley.
This series, as with the novel, is well worth going over, if spy thrillers are your cup of
tea, although it may not be one to binge, as I’d say this is a storyline that requires the
watcher/reader to come up for air, once in a while.
You can stream The Ipcress File in full now on ITV Hub or ad-free on Britbox

The Potting Shed
Spice Up Your
Greenhouse This
Spring with Chillies
With the days drawing out and temperatures starting to slowly climb; now is a
great time to try planting something new. Chillies could be exactly the project
you need. A greenhouse is the perfect environment to grow chillies in this country,
but you can find some real success by growing them on a sunny windowsill.
Sow some chilli seeds in moist, multi-purpose compost and cover another thin
layer of compost. It’s a little unsightly, but you can get some real success from covering
the pot with a plastic bag and tightly fasten it using something like an elastic
band. Keep this soil moist but avoid it become soaking wet. The plastic bag can
be removed when seedlings start to appear, and when your plant starts to grow
proper leaves; repot individually.
After this, chillies are a fairly low maintenance project to be getting on with.
When the weather picks up and the ground isn’t frosting over; move them to a
sheltered and sunny spot in your garden. Water them little and often and when
you first start to get the fruits growing, begin feeding the plant weekly with a
tomato fertiliser that’s high in potash. If you like your chillies on the hotter side,
it’s a good idea to ‘stress them’ by leaving your soil a little dryer, not feeding them
quite as often and snapping off stems and leaves. Additionally, the longer you let
your chillies mature; the hotter they will be. For a milder level of heat; pick the
fruits a little earlier when they’re green.
Your chillies will likely be ready to pick in the late stages of summer; as they need
a fairly long growing period. That’s why we advise planting them ASAP. We wish
you all the best of luck.

Target Rambles: Pontsarn Viaduct
Built in the 1860s by engineer Alexander Sunderland, The Pontsarn Viaduct
covers an area of incredible natural beauty, crossing the Afon Taf Fechan and is a
wonderful place to take a walk on a spring afternoon. It ceased to be in operational
use a century after it was built and is now a constituent of the Taff Trail cycle route.
When the line was still operational; Pontsarn had its own railway station
with a Stationmaster and a Porter and was a busy travel link designed to cope with
the rise of industry in the region. It has seven impressive arches (or spans) and once
upon a time was a favourite location for day trips and outings.
A staple of these outings would’ve been a trip to The Pontsarn Hotel and
refreshment rooms. Another favourite of the time was The Aberglais Inn, and this
is still in existence today, conveniently located nearby for a pitstop should you feel
inclined.
The Taf Fechan Nature Reserve, in the shadow of Pontsarn Viaduct, is a 2.5
km stretch of limestone gorge cut by the Aber Taf Fechan and boasts stunning views
while providing shelter and a pleasant place to stop for a picnic. The woodlands
around the Taf Fechan have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
