The Department and the commercial fishing industry entered into
an agreement in 1995 that provided for the Department to recover
the costs associated with the management of major commercial
fisheries. The costs were recovered through the annual fee
charged for access to the fishery concerned.
Effective 1 July 2010 the use of cost recovery and a contribution
to the Development and Better Interests Fund as the mechanism
for setting access fees was discontinued. Access fees are
now levied as a percentage of the gross value of production of
each fishery with no Development and Better Interests Fund
contribution.
