Message from the Chair<br />
<strong>Health</strong> services in Victoria continue to face significant<br />
challenges, providing health care to increasing numbers<br />
of people within very tight operational budgets. This is<br />
particularly true at <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> where the surge in<br />
demand for health services is driven by our rapidly<br />
expanding local population - which estimates predict will<br />
continue to grow.<br />
During the 2011-12 financial year, increased demand was<br />
evident in many areas of our service, including Maternity<br />
where an extra 342 babies were born, bringing the total<br />
for the year to 2,352; and also our Emergency Department<br />
which remains one of the busiest in the state, treating<br />
66,228 patients.<br />
The <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> plays an important role<br />
supporting the work of our <strong>Health</strong> Service, by raising vital<br />
funds for the purchase of medical equipment, education,<br />
capital works, training and research. Without the support of<br />
our donors, the work of the <strong>Foundation</strong> would simply not be<br />
possible, and I’d like to acknowledge the generous gifts made<br />
in the 2011-12 financial year which enabled us to make the<br />
following acquisitions:<br />

The Les & Muriel Batten <strong>Foundation</strong><br />
helping to protect tiny lives<br />
The <strong>Northern</strong> Hospital’s newly expanded Special Care Nursery<br />
received a very welcome boost recently from one of <strong>Northern</strong><br />
<strong>Health</strong>’s longest and most committed supporters, The Les &<br />
Muriel Batten <strong>Foundation</strong>.<br />
The Batten family, who once owned the land where the<br />
<strong>Northern</strong> Hospital is now located, continue to maintain very<br />
strong ties to the northern community and have been extremely<br />
generous supporters, funding several projects over the past<br />
10 years. The Batten Society, a special group of long-term<br />
supporters whose members have chosen to leave a bequest to<br />
<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong>, is also named in their honour.<br />
Les and Muriel were long time residents of Epping and lived on<br />
High Street for more than 50 years. Bruce Batten, the nephew<br />
of Les and Muriel said the family used to graze cattle on the<br />
land where Epping Plaza and The <strong>Northern</strong> Hospital now stand.<br />
‘The whole area was covered in artichokes and we used to flush<br />
out the calves by riding our horses through the thistles where<br />
they were hiding,’ Bruce says.<br />
‘Uncle Les had a very strong affection for children and was very<br />
clear in his instructions that the money from his estate should<br />
go towards helping and supporting young children in the<br />
community.’<br />
Degani Bakery Café<br />
The state of the art café, located at both The <strong>Northern</strong><br />
Hospital and Broadmeadows <strong>Health</strong> Service, offers many<br />
delicious and healthy options for staff and patients, along<br />
with a wide array of snacks and refreshments to appeal to<br />
even the fussiest of eaters.<br />
Not only have they been filling our tummies with delicious<br />
fare and steaming cups of coffee to get us through those<br />
early morning meetings, but they have also been donating<br />
generous funds to assist The <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong><br />
in providing equipment and services to a <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />
patients.<br />
Over the past twelve months, Degani have donated an<br />
astonishing $15,000 to the <strong>Foundation</strong> to help purchase<br />
life saving medical equipment across <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />
campuses.<br />
The Les & Muriel Batten <strong>Foundation</strong>’s most recent gift of<br />
$124,050 will help us purchase five Infant Isolette 8000<br />
Incubators for the Special Care Nursery that will protect and<br />
potentially save the lives of newborns requiring additional<br />
assistance after birth.<br />
We thank Degani for their generous contribution and<br />
assistance in helping us to create a healthier northern<br />
community.
Building a better tomorrow<br />
The <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> and Places Victoria<br />
have proudly launched the 2013 House and Land Charity<br />
Campaign which aims to raise $400,000 for <strong>Northern</strong><br />
<strong>Health</strong>’s Teaching, Training and Research Precinct through the<br />
construction and auction of a new family home on the corner<br />
of Harvest Home Road and Efficient Street, Epping.<br />
Places Victoria and <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> have successfully<br />
auctioned four house and land packages since 2001, raising<br />
an exceptional $1.5 million which has been used to purchase<br />
life saving medical equipment.<br />
The launch of the campaign on July 26 at the Places Victoria<br />
office was designed to raise awareness of the campaign and<br />
attract the support of a community-minded builder who<br />
will partner with us for the construction. The event included<br />
appearances by Melbourne Victory footballers and featured<br />
Tim Campbell as MC.<br />
Annual dinner<br />
Held at the Plenty Ranges Arts and<br />
Convention Centre on July 21, this year’s<br />
Annual Fundraising Dinner and Auction<br />
was a big success, raising $130,000 to<br />
purchase equipment for <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong>’s<br />
VISUALISATION expanding Cardiology Department. - ENTRY<br />
The 400 guests enjoyed a three course<br />
dinner and drinks, entertainment and live<br />
music, while helping to raise funds with<br />
an auction, silent auction and raffle which<br />
included MCG Football tickets, artwork<br />
and homeware prizes.<br />

Over the past twelve months<br />
the <strong>Foundation</strong> has worked<br />
closely with Freemasons<br />
Victoria to establish a strategic<br />
partnership, which has<br />
involved presentations by<br />
<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> CEO, Greg<br />
Pullen and a tour of The<br />
<strong>Northern</strong> Hospital’s facilities.<br />
The Freemasons Charitable<br />
<strong>Foundation</strong> has now<br />
generously contributed<br />
$12,000 towards the purchase<br />
of medical equipment that has<br />
the potential to save lives in<br />
our Emergency Department,<br />
which is currently undergoing<br />
vital expansions that will see it<br />
grow from 38 to 60 cubicles to<br />
meet demand.<br />

Helping young and old<br />
The increased demand for <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong>’s services spans<br />
the age spectrum of newborn babies right through to older<br />
residents who need day-to-day care. The <strong>Foundation</strong> has been<br />
grateful to receive strong support from a range of new donors<br />
this year, including the Lord Mayor’s Charitable <strong>Foundation</strong><br />
which has granted $10,000 towards the purchase of lifesaving<br />
medical equipment at The <strong>Northern</strong> Hospital’s recently<br />
expanded Special Care Nursery.<br />
The <strong>Foundation</strong> also successfully applied for and received a<br />
$15,000 grant towards the installation of a ceiling hoist at<br />
John Molnar accepting the cheque to the <strong>Foundation</strong> from Right<br />
Worshipful Brother George Sutherland Past Deputy Grand Master Chair<br />
of the Freemasons Charitable <strong>Foundation</strong><br />
NORTHERN ACADEMIC & RESEARCH PRECINCT<br />
the Ian Brand Nursing Home from the Ian Rollo Currie Estate.<br />
The lifting device will assist patients with a number of complex<br />
medical conditions and limited mobility, enabling them to be<br />
transferred safely; and will lower the risk of staff injuries due<br />
to lifting.<br />
Both of these grants were helped by personal introductions<br />
by our existing supporters, Mr Paul Wheelton, OAM and<br />
<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> Board member, Mr Trevor<br />
Gorman to whom we are extremely grateful.
Making it personal<br />
Jason Brook<br />
Our remarkable staff at <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> regularly go above<br />
and beyond the call of duty to help our patients – none<br />
more so than Jason Brook who has worked as a Patient<br />
Services Attendant in the Children and Adolescent <strong>Health</strong><br />
Unit (CAHU) for the past 14 years.<br />
Jason has seen hundreds of children enter the ward during<br />
that time, but his heart was particularly touched recently<br />
by a very sick three year old boy, and 10 year old girl, who<br />
were both receiving palliative care. During the time that<br />
these little children were in the hospital, Jason became<br />
close with their families, “I have a little girl myself, and I<br />
can’t imagine what these families are going through,” he<br />
says. “I developed a great rapport and bond with these<br />
kids and their families and I wanted to do something for<br />
them in this difficult time.”<br />

Determined to make a difference in some small way, Jason<br />
decided to hold a fundraiser for the children’s families,<br />
inviting people to sponsor him to shave his head and chop<br />
off his long locks which hadn’t been cut for more than<br />
three years.<br />
Jason raised $7,100 which has been distributed to the two<br />
families. “I’m hoping these families can use this money<br />
to take a trip, or buy something that they want or need,”<br />
Jason says.<br />

circuit in a stableford competition for individual<br />
players, and a team event incorporating the<br />
senior professionals’ score.<br />

course is set on 280 acres of picturesque, gently<br />
undulating land with spectacular ancient trees,<br />
just 30 minutes from the <strong>Northern</strong> Ring Road.<br />

Driving forward with Honda<br />
The <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> was thrilled to secure a new<br />
partnership with the Honda <strong>Foundation</strong> who will generously<br />
donate a Honda Odyssey people mover that will help us<br />
comfortably transport patients who need assistance when<br />
attending appointments.<br />
The brand new vehicle will be available for a three year<br />
period and will be fully maintained and serviced, courtesy of<br />
the North Way Honda dealership in Plenty Road, Bundoora.<br />
