The New JulfanArmenians were the only Eurasian community that was able tooperate simultaneously and successfully in all the majorempires of the early modern world&#8213boh land-basedAsian empires and the emerging sea-borneempires&#8213asonishingly without the benefits of an imperialnetwork and state that accompanied and facilitated Europeanmercantile expansion during the same period. This book bringsto light for the first time the trans-imperial cosmopolitan worldof the New Julfans. Among other topics, it explores the effectsof long distance trade on the organization of community life,the ethos of trust and cooperation that existed amongmerchants, and the importance of information networks andcommunication in the operation of early modern mercantilecommunities.
