HOOPS
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO WAYNE
ROONEY, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS AND ALL ASSOCIATED WITH
DERBY COUNTY FOOTBALL CLUB.
T
he issues faced by Wayne
and his squad this season
have been well
documented, with the club being
constantly in the news for all the
wrong reasons. However,
throughout all of the turmoil, they
have performed consistently well
and deserve enormous credit for
delivering such good quality
displays despite the many
distracting issues. There is no
doubt that we face another very
tough encounter this afternoon, but
it is one we are looking forward to,
and likewise to sharing a post-game
drink with Wayne and his staff.
I am writing these notes post-
Preston and pre-Huddersfield and,
as such, am aware that our fight for a
play-off place may still be ongoing or,
potentially, could be over. There is no
masking our disappointment at the
run of poor results that have dogged
us since early February. Having
worked so hard to place ourselves in
such a strong position, it has been
hugely frustrating to see so many
opportunities missed or squandered.
Injuries have, of course, hit us very
badly, and the loss of key individuals
for lengthy periods has been an
issue that we have often struggled
to overcome. However, this is not an
excuse, as there is no doubt we have
good players in the squad and there
is no lack of belief in their ability to
perform when called upon.
We must recognise that this is how a
squad matures, how it develops, but
it does not in any way dilute the level
of disappointment felt by everyone
– especially you, our supporters.
Having to deal with increased
expectation, having to cope with
a demanding schedule of games,
being able to handle the loss of key
players to injury… all these factors
and much more are what allow the
younger players to deal with the
pressures of the Championship and
develop the attributes required to
succeed.
I have absolute belief in the players,
as do John, Neil and the rest of
the staff, and I know there is so
much more development to come.
I hope very much that a positive
performance at Huddersfield allows
us to go into today’s game focused
both on the result, and the continuing
development of the squad.
HOOPS
Referring back to the Preston game,
we had the unprecedented situation
of our fifth goalkeeper this season,
with Keiren falling ill just before
kick-off. Keiren had been unwell
through the middle of the week but
had improved enough by Saturday
morning to be confident of making
it through the game. However, as
soon as he started warming up, it
became clear that he was still very
poorly, would be unable to play and
had to be closely monitored by our
club doctor.
One person’s disappointment is
another person’s opportunity, and up
stepped young Murphy Mahoney to
make his first-team debut. He dealt
with the challenge exceptionally
well, showed a cool head for such
a daunting situation, and delivered
an excellent performance, for which
he deserves enormous credit. The
remaining first-team players gave
him tremendous support both
before and during the game, and I
hope very much that despite the
disappointment of the result, young
‘Murph’ can look back on his debut
with much pride.
Finally, a very sincere thank you to
the travelling supporters who made
their way to Preston, despite the
midweek trip to Sheffield and with
the disappointment of that result
still fresh in their minds. You gave the
boys excellent vocal backing and we
are so frustrated at not being able
to give you a good journey home.
As always, your backing is greatly
appreciated.
Enjoy the game!
REMEMBERING
DAVE CLEMENT
(1948-1982)
QPR marked 40 years since the
tragic passing of Dave Clement
with a series of tributes to the
stalwart Rangers right-back on
the official club website.
Clement, who spent 14 years
at Loftus Road and was a
key member of the Rangers
side that came within one
game of winning the League
Championship in the 1975/76
season, died at the age of 34 in
March 1982.
Capped five times by England,
he racked up a total of 476
appearances for the Hoops
before going on to play for
Bolton, Fulham and Wimbledon.
Club historian Chris Guy and
Hoops contributor Tony Incenzo
both wrote personal tributes to
Clement, while Ian Gillard – who
played at left-back alongside
Clement for the majority of
his QPR career – shared his
recollections in a video interview.
Gillard said: “I was always close
to Dave – we got on well and we
were a good unit. I miss him a
lot, I still think about him and the
times we had.
“He was a good man and a
good player who had a nice
presence about him. Walking
into the ground he was always
immaculate, polite and helpful.
“Dave did everything right and was
a model professional. He wanted
to be fit all the time and his warmups
lasted 20 minutes – he was
really thorough in what he did.
“He was very well respected,
especially because he’d give a lot of
time to the youngsters, which you
need when you’re an apprentice.
He was a really nice guy.”
INTERVIEW: BEN KOSKY
INCREDIBLY, NO FEWER THAN FIVE
PLAYERS HAVE DONNED THE QPR
GOALKEEPER’S JERSEY SO FAR THIS
SEASON. CURRENT INCUMBENT KEIREN
WESTWOOD DISCUSSES THE INJURY
CRISIS AND SETS HIS SIGHTS ON A
POSITIVE FINISH TO THE CAMPAIGN…
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 13

HOOPS
Keiren, your arrival at the club last
month came about in a hurry – when
did you learn you were going to become
a QPR player?
Probably as soon as David Marshall got
injured, to be honest! I got a phone call
at about half past 10 that evening. I’d
almost signed for someone else the week
before but that didn’t materialise for
different reasons. I sort of pre-empted
it a little bit because I knew Seny and
Jordan were already injured, but I was
really excited by the opportunity to play
for QPR. I knew what a great club it was
from playing against them a number
of times and the club is full of fantastic
players and individuals I know and respect.
Jeff Hendrick’s someone I’ve known for a
good number of years, playing together
for the Republic of Ireland, but I reckon
I’ve probably played against everybody
else in the squad at some stage! It was a
no-brainer for me – I just got down there
and got stuck into training. It’s been an
easy transition, just coming in and saying
hello to everybody and they’ve welcomed
me with open arms.
Clearly you weren’t put off by the
apparent jinx on QPR goalkeepers this
season! Have you ever seen this kind of
injury list before during your career?
You don’t really foresee this sort of thing
happening because every squad now has
three goalkeepers – and it’s the same
at QPR, we did have three goalkeepers!
It’s just really unfortunate the way things
have fallen. These things do happen and
injuries are part of the game but you
probably wouldn’t expect it to happen as
frequently as this, with one position.
Murphy Mahoney stepped in to become
Rangers’ fifth Championship keeper
of the season after you had to miss
14 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
With the game and the
energy and the crowd, it’s nice
to be able to take that moment
to myself and to God and to be
in that moment
our recent game at Preston – were you
impressed by the way he performed?
Of course, I’ve been impressed with
everybody really. Murphy’s a great lad
and I’ve enjoyed training with him and
with the other keepers at the club as well.
Goalkeepers are a different breed and we
all get on well with each other too, maybe
partly because we tend to be out on our
own at training – the goalkeepers train
over in one area away from the rest of
the squad, so the unit becomes a closeknit
one.
Can I ask about your pre-match routine?
Just before kick-off, we see you kneeling
in the penalty area with a towel over your
head – has that always been part of your
preparation?
It’s something I’ve done my whole career,
but maybe it seems new because I’m at a
new club – fans obviously wouldn’t have
been watching me that closely when I
played against them. I’m a religious guy
and I just take a moment to speak to
myself, calm myself down and say some
prayers to family members who have
passed. With the game and the energy
and the crowd, it’s nice to be able to take
that moment to myself and to God and
to be in that moment.
Largely due to their 21-point deduction,
Derby arrive here in a perilous position
but does that make them more
dangerous – a sense of nothing to lose?
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 15

HOOPS
I’ve played over 500
games now and played
in every division from
Conference up to Premier
League and I’d rather have
had that sort of career
Yes, they’ve been dealt some tough
hands, to be fair to them. I don’t know
too much about the situation at the club
but obviously it’s not good and fair play to
their lads, their team and management
– they’re still going and they still have an
opportunity to get out of it. That was
probably the best case scenario they
could have hoped for, that they’d get to
this stage of the season having given
themselves the best chance they could.
You’ve spent most of your career at
Championship level with Coventry and
Sheffield Wednesday – do you hope
to become one of those keepers who
plays on into their forties, given the
opportunity?
Well, I’ve been playing regularly my whole
career since I was 20 or 21, when I first
got into the team at Carlisle. I’ve played
over 500 games now and played in every
division from Conference up to Premier
League and I’d rather have had that sort
of career. Maybe you can look at it and
think ‘could I have been a number two
at a Premier League club?’ but I’d rather
be a number one in the Championship.
As you get older, though, you start to
recognise your role may change – the
dynamic changes and your perspective
changes as well. I’ll always be ready to
play but I’m also a realist.
16 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
If I’m honest, I’m not really one
for globetrotting and I’ve not had
loads of loan moves or anything
like that. At the moment,
I’m thoroughly enjoying the
experience of being at QPR
So is it too early to think about your
plans for next season and perhaps
a longer stay at QPR, given the
opportunity?
Everywhere I’ve been, I’ve stayed a long
time, given the opportunity. If I’m honest,
I’m not really one for globetrotting and
I’ve not had loads of loan moves or
anything like that. At the moment, I’m
thoroughly enjoying the experience of
being at QPR. I’d actually really like to
see some of the other lads come back
and have the chance to watch them play.
We’re all just trying to stay focused on
this season and be in the present and
do what we can to have a positive end to
the season – that’s what we’ll be striving
towards. Talk of anything else can wait
for now.
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS ON IN W12…
W
ell. What can I say? The season that
drove us to the highest of heights is
coming to an end, and not necessarily in
the way we would have thought back in January.
Firstly, I want to commend Mark Warburton and
staff. I love having Mark at the helm, ever since
his first interview. He’s someone who both knows
and cares deeply about the game and the club.
He’s performed miracles with the squad and
developed individuals to the highest standard,
something I don’t believe he gets enough credit
for. I think the financial constraints surrounding
the club were a burden to him, but what Mark
did was use this limited budget to the greatest
effect and encourage his players to reach their
potential. That confidence created a squad with
belief, something fundamentally important to
succeeding in the Championship. We forget
sometimes what the club was like just a few years
ago. The times we enjoyed this season were
simply not there a few years ago, and I thank Mark
for bringing the life back into our club.
Although we made the best of a difficult situation,
we were hurt by it too. As Mark said, you win
the league with a squad, not a team. And he’s
completely right. We have some marvellous
individuals, but at times became a bit over-reliant
on those players. Teams like (excuse my French)
Fulham and Bournemouth can afford to pack
their squads with depth and quality and cover
all bases. We did manage to produce a brilliant
group of players, but the inevitable wear and tear
of the season can expose those holes if you’re
vulnerable, and we were. I don’t think that’s our
fault either, at least not the fault of the current
group. It’s more of a reality check.
But I’m a positive person. This league is long,
bizarre and quite frankly random. Our team did
show what it can do throughout the campaign.
But – and of equal importance – we’ve also shown
what we can’t do. You can’t learn unless you lose,
and you can’t grow unless you learn. I don’t want
us to get promoted until we can fight. I don’t
want to rely on form. I want this squad to meet
its potential, be ready for what’s to come and
progress. I don’t want to sit back and win if we
don’t deserve it, because that’s unsustainable
– clubs that prioritise the now over the future
are the ones who fall the farthest. Our time will
come, and this season is big. It’s huge. We’ll
remember each defeat, knowing that without
the learnings from them, we wouldn’t have been
able to succeed at the level we will undoubtedly
reach in the next few years. Each step’s a big one.
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
Founder members of the Football League and twice champions during
the early 1970s, Derby County find themselves staring into the abyss of
third-tier football for only the third time in the club’s proud history.
The Rams rose from the depths of the old Division Two under Brian
Clough and went on to win two titles and reach the European Cup semifinals
– but those days seem distant given the club’s present plight.
Following a disastrous Premier League campaign in 2007/08, when they
went down with a record low points total of 11, Derby have now spent 14
continuous seasons at this level – including two play-off final defeats.
But their chances of extending their Championship tenure to 15 years
were severely dented by off-field issues – the Rams’ perilous finances
bringing about administration and an overall deduction of 21 points last
autumn.
Despite the defiant efforts of manager Wayne Rooney’s threadbare
squad throughout the season, time is now running out for Derby, who
went into the Easter weekend nine points adrift of safety.
[ THE GAFFER ]
ENGLAND’S record
goalscorer Wayne Rooney
has been widely praised in his
first shot at management,
working tirelessly to
maintain morale around
Pride Park despite the club’s
precarious situation.
Rooney, who burst onto
the scene as a 16-year-old
striker with boyhood club
Everton, went on to carve
out a glittering 13-year
career at Manchester United,
where his 253 goals made
him the club’s all-time
leading marksman.
He won five Premier League
titles, the Champions League
and Europa League as well as
four domestic cups during his
time at Old Trafford before
returning to Everton and then
joining the Rams in January
2020 after a brief spell with
DC United.
Initially named playercoach,
Rooney was handed
the manager’s role midway
through last season after the
departure of Phillip Cocu and
did enough to steer Derby to
Championship safety on the
final day of the campaign.
However, the Rams’
subsequent transfer
embargo, descent into
administration and heavy
points deduction have
combined to make his first
full season in management a
challenging one – to say the
least.
WELL-TRAVELLED
goalkeeper Ryan Allsop
has established himself
as the Rams’ number
following his departure
from Wycombe last
summer.
Allsop, who started out
at West Brom and then
his senior debut for
Leyton Orient in 2012,
spent five years with
Bournemouth and was
loaned out on several
occasions – including a
three-month stint at
Wycombe.
He joined the Chairboys
on a permanent deal in
2018 and went on to
figure in their League
One play-off final
triumph against Oxford
a year later,
accumulating 111
appearances for Gareth
Ainsworth’s side.
Davies is now in his fifth season
at Pride Park and had been
ever-present in the
Championship this year going
into the Easter weekend.
Davies, who launched his career at
Luton and made three appearances
for England’s Under-21 side, went
on to play in the Premier League
with West Brom, Aston Villa and
Birmingham before joining
promoted Hull in 2013.
At the end of his first season, the
defender’s goal put the Tigers 2-0
up in the FA Cup final against
Arsenal and, although they went
on to lose 3-2, Davies did
experience Wembley success in
2016 as Hull won the
Championship play-offs to regain
Tom Lawrence is coveted
by several clubs, having
Lawrence, who began his
loaned to Carlisle and
Yeovil before signing for
However, he struggled
FAMILIAR FACE:
ADAM
BOLDER
A MAINSTAY of Derby’s midfield during almost seven years at
Pride Park, Adam Bolder reunited with former Rams boss John
Gregory to help QPR avoid relegation in the 2006/07 season.
Bolder began his career on his native Humberside with Hull City
before moving to Derby in 2000, amassing 166 appearances for the
club before losing his place in the team during their promotion season
and moving to W12.
The midfielder was appointed club captain at the start of the 2007/08
campaign, but Gregory’s dismissal and the influx of expensive
signings that followed left him surplus to requirements and he was
loaned to Sheffield Wednesday.
Bolder eventually left Rangers to sign for Millwall on a permanent
basis during the 2008/09 season and went on to feature for Burton
Albion, North Ferriby United and Scarborough Athletic before retiring
in 2019.
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood afternoon everyone and
welcome back to the Kiyan Prince
Foundation Stadium for the game
this afternoon against Derby County.
Derby have had a very difficult time this season
and obviously, having been deducted 21 points,
were always going to find it a huge struggle to
survive. However, they have actually had a real
good go at staying up in what have been very
difficult circumstances – for which manager
Wayne Rooney, his staff and his players deserve
a great amount of credit.
I am writing these notes prior to the
Championship games on Good Friday but,
regardless of their result at home to Fulham
and other results elsewhere, Derby will come
into today’s game looking to win if they are to
stand a chance of avoiding relegation. They
may actually be in a situation where they need
to win all their remaining games to stay up,
so we know we face opponents who have
everything to play for and will keep going until
the end of the season.
As indicated, I am writing before the long
trip to high-flying Huddersfield Town and
therefore do not know the outcome of
that game, but I sincerely hope we will have
returned with a win we desperately need. Prior
to the Huddersfield game, our recent run
of results had been really poor and we have
slipped from the very promising position we
had got ourselves into at the end of January
to where we find ourselves now.
We have seen many times – and no doubt we
will see it again – how, in football and indeed in
sport in general, things can change both in a
positive and negative way very quickly.
Confidence in sport is huge and you can gain it
quickly, individually and collectively – and it can
drain away just as quickly when performance
levels drop and results go against you.
That is why every game matters, every
performance as a team and as an individual
matters and every point you are playing for
matters – it really does. A good run of results
can catapult you up the league, as we have seen
with teams like Nottingham Forest and Sheffield
United in recent months and a poor run can have
the opposite effect, as we have seen with West
Brom and disappointingly, ourselves.
What I do know is that we have a chance today
in front of our fans, who have been magnificent
both home and away throughout the season,
to put in a performance and get a win.
HOOPS
When things are not going well, individually
and as a collective team and squad, one thing
for sure is that there is no hiding place out on
a football pitch. You can and will often find out
a lot about yourself and others around you in
times of adversity. The players who pull on the
shirt today know they have to roll their sleeves
up and do all they can to get the three points
on offer this afternoon.
Before our last home game against Fulham,
over 50 people including myself took part in
the Tiger Feet 12 walk from Fulham to the
Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium. The walk
was done by various QPR personnel including
CEO Lee Hoos, members of our Community
Trust staff, members of our Under-23 team
and, of course, QPR fans – all supporting a
fabulous cause and helping to raise as much
money as possible for our very popular Tiger
Cubs. The walk itself was very enjoyable, the
majority of it along the banks of the Thames
with lovely weather. Can I say a huge thank
you to everyone who took part in the walk and
to everyone who donated money towards
such a great cause, where every pound raised
really does matter and helps to sustain the
programme our Community Trust delivers for
young people.
Well done everyone involved and thanks so
much once again.
Another event I am really looking forward is
to this year’s QPR Forever R’s golf day, which
is being held at The Shire London Golf Club
later this month. As always, we have had
tremendous support for the golf day from
club sponsors, fans and some 18 former
QPR players who attend and play on the day.
Having not been able to host the golf day in
the last two years due to Covid restrictions, it
will be great to see lots of familiar faces again.
I hope everyone taking part will have a really
enjoyable time and that the day itself is a huge
success once again.
As always, a huge thank you to all our fans for
the incredible support you have given and
continue to give the team, both at home and
away games.
Let’s get behind the lads today as we look
to get the three points at stake.
How did you get scouted?
I got scouted in a Sunday
league friendly against QPR
where I played well and scored
two goals, coming on at
half-time to change the game
and win it. Before joining QPR
I played for Bedfont Eagles
scoring 32 goals in one season
which got me boosted to the
What’s the highlight of your
career so far?
Scoring the qualifying goal for
my country (Algeria) in the Arab
Cup – it was in the 93rd minute
against Niger U20s. It was a
proud moment for me and my
family and left me speechless
with pure excitement.
Who’s your favourite player
or inspiration?
My favourite ever player is
Ronaldinho as I think he was
able to play with freedom and
entertain people at a high level
with a love for the ball and
great mastery of it as well.
Where do you see yourself in
five years’ time?
I see myself playing in a top
division team abroad where I
am enjoying my football and
performing at a high level week
in, week out, maintaining levels
and improving.
Which of your team-mates do
you see as a future coach or
Charlie McDonald could be a
future manager as he is very
passionate and able to be
sympathetic with other players
and people in general.
Which stadium in the world
would you most like to play in?
HOOPS
ERNIE, you played your part in the
early stages of our run to the final.
In the third round, we drew 1-1 at
home to Middlesbrough and won the
replay 3-2. Do you recall those games?
I remember going up to Ayresome Park
in midweek, although I can’t recall
either match – it seems ages ago now.
But looking back, it was good to beat
Middlesbrough as we were in Division
Two and they were in the top flight so
we started our FA Cup run well as
underdogs.
In the fourth round, we nearly lost away
to Blackpool but it finished 0-0. Do you
have any memories of that one?
Yes, I was marking a lad called Dave
Bamber who was their centre-forward.
He seemed to be about seven foot tall!
Blackpool were very direct and they
used to hit the ball towards the big lad
a lot. It was a really hard game in bad
weather. But I suppose fixtures like that
suited me better and I always enjoyed
the challenge. From my point of view, I
felt I had given my all in a game by using
my strength. You knew you were going
to be in a battle and I relished that,
rather than playing against smaller
strikers who were always more difficult
and tricky. I split my eye open during
the match at Blackpool and had it
stitched up. Then when I went in to
training on the Monday, I had a big
black eye, but I got the all-clear to play
in the replay the following evening.
However, the exact same thing
happened in that game as I split the
other eye open! So I ended up looking
like Gigi the Panda for around 10 days!
The replay against Blackpool took
place at Loftus Road in midweek, with
Clive Allen scoring four times as we
ran out 5-1 winners – quite a
convincing victory in the end…
Yes, I think so. Blackpool were in
Division Four so that replay was always
going to be tougher for them coming
down to play us. It was a good result for
38 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
Rangers and it got the momentum
going more than anything, really.
In the fifth round, we beat Grimsby
Town, who were several places below
us in the Division Two table, 3-1 at
Loftus Road. You scored an important
goal that day…
We played them twice, in fact. We met in
a league game at the Bush the previous
week and beat them 1-0 before they
returned for that FA Cup tie. I remember
scoring, although I don’t recall much else
about the game. But that result really set
us on the road to Wembley.
Hope and expectation were certainly
building among our fans. Do you
remember listening to the radio on a
Monday lunchtime for the live FA Cup
draws back in those days?
Yes, that was always quite an exciting
thing. The players would come in from
training and await the draw in the
dressing room. A newspaper
photographer would always be there
too as the lads crowded around a
transistor radio. As a Division Two club,
we were looking to have a good run, so
there was great interest to see who we
got in the next round. I can remember
it all quite vividly.
We had the plastic Omniturf pitch at
Loftus Road and critics used to say it
gave us a big advantage. What was it
like playing on that surface?
Initially, it was a fresh venture that
season and it took some getting used
to. It was new to everyone but
personally, I looked on it as a bit of an
improvement in playing surfaces. It
helped me from a footballing
viewpoint. Although opposing teams
used to come down to play us and
moan about the pitch, they were
always allowed to train on it on the
Friday before a match. I think it brought
a different avenue to the game as
Loftus Road always had a notoriously
muddy grass pitch before that –
therefore I felt it was a step forward.
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 39

HOOPS
The QPR players couldn’t train on it
every day, though. Our boss Terry
Venables worked it out that, if we were
preparing for an away game, then we
would train on grass. But before a
home game we would train on the
plastic for a couple of days beforehand
– so with that in mind, I suppose we did
have an advantage.
You dropped out of our team shortly
after the FA Cup win over Grimsby.
What happened at that point?
We had a league game at home to Derby
County the following week and I went
down ill, something just got me. So it was
Bob Hazell who came into the side and
played as my replacement. When I
recovered, Terry Venables brought me
back in for a couple of games. I don’t
think I did very well and Bob got the nod
after that and he stayed in the starting
line-up. It was disappointing for me, but
that’s what happened.
I’m sure you were watching the
QPR games from the sidelines for the
rest of that FA Cup run. It was an
exciting time…
Oh, to be involved in any FA Cup run is
exciting. Just the thrill of getting to
Wembley, especially for a Division Two
club. It didn’t happen very often and there
was everything that goes with it. Everyone
wanted to interview the players, you get
invited to do things and the FA Cup final
itself was a big occasion in those days,
especially for the supporters. When you
look at QPR, they haven’t played at
Wembley that often – the club’s only
appearance in the national stadium
before that was the 1967 League Cup
final. So it was a big achievement to get
there under Terry Venables and one that
everybody enjoyed.
In hindsight, though, missing out on the
rest of the run all the way through to the
final must have been a blow for you?
Well, I previously went to the FA Cup
final as a non-playing part of the
HOOPS
It was a good result for
Rangers and it got the
momentum going more than
anything, really.
Fulham squad when I was a youngster
in 1975. I had only just turned
professional at that point so it was all
new to me. Therefore going to
Wembley with QPR was another major
final that I didn’t play in. Yes, I was
involved in it all but it is never the same
as stepping out on to the pitch, really.
The other players had performed very
well so you don’t have any argument,
do you? You can’t argue with results
and so on. The manager makes a
decision and unfortunately that’s it
from an individual point of view. Then
QPR had the replay and I didn’t play in
that one either. I knew I was going to
leave Rangers at that point, anyway
– my contract was finished and they
weren’t going to renew it. It was the
end of the road for me and so I ended
up signing for Portsmouth.
You originally joined QPR from Fulham
in December 1977. Rangers were a
much bigger club than the Cottagers
in the 1970s so it must have been a
fantastic move for you – how did it
come about?
I had been fighting to leave Fulham, I
wasn’t playing regularly at Craven
Cottage. I was in and out of the side as
I was in competition with John Lacy for
the centre-half position. I just needed
to play more and I felt I justified a
first-team place. Of course, no-one
guarantees you that but I wanted to
move on and test myself. In that
period, I went to what they called a
transfer tribunal to get the fee cut as
Fulham were asking quite a lot of
money and I was saying it was too
much. I was out of contract but you
couldn’t just leave a club in those days
– the club owned you basically until
someone came in and made a
concrete offer, otherwise you were
going nowhere. It was totally different
to today, obviously. It started off that
Fulham wanted £200,000 for me but
we got it down to £55,000 and QPR
then decided to make the signing. I was
a little bit naïve in lots of things, as you
are when you’re younger, but it was a
great opportunity for me as Rangers
were in the old Division One and that
was a huge experience for me as a
young player.
TOTTENHAM 1
Date: Saturday 22nd May 1982
Competition: FA Cup final (Wembley Stadium)
Attendance: 100,000
Gate receipts: £918,000
(a Wembley record at the time)
The Programme: Sixty-four pages, price 80p
A THUMPING header by Terry Fenwick
secured this battling draw for plucky
Division Two underdogs QPR against their
top-flight opponents.
Tottenham had the best chances but Hoops
keeper Peter Hucker pulled off sprawling saves
to deny Garth Crooks and Steve Archibald.
An unfortunate early injury to leading
marksman Clive Allen sadly blunted Rangers’
attack and he eventually had to be substituted
just after the break.
The sides couldn’t be separated in 90 minutes
so extra-time ensued. Then in the 109th
minute, R’s midfielder Gary Waddock was
clearly fouled and lay prostrate on the ground
while Glenn Hoddle capitalised by advancing
forward to score for Spurs with a shot that
deflected in off QPR’s Tony Currie.
But with five minutes to go, a well-rehearsed
set-play brought the equaliser. Simon Stainrod
launched a colossal long throw from the left, big
Bob Hazell expertly flicked the ball on and
Fenwick gloriously bulldozed into the roof of the
net past England keeper Ray Clemence.
This led to a typical Statto-esque observation from
John Motson in the BBC TV commentary box…
“…And Terry Fenwick has become the first
full-back to score from open play in a Cup Final…”
In his match report in The Observer newspaper,
eloquent wordsmith Hugh McIlvanney wrote:
“Queens Park Rangers from the Second
Division, responding to the brave excellence of
a 22-year-old-goalkeeper who began this
season in the reserves, refused to be broken by
a goal sickeningly deflected into his net in the
second half of extra-time and came back to
claim an equaliser that sends them forward to
contest the FA Cup final all over again at
Wembley next Thursday.
“Peter Hucker is 6ft 4in tall and weighs 13st and
he deployed his bulk to such athletic and
inspired purpose between the Rangers posts
that Spurs found themselves in need of deadly
finishers on a day when they had none. That
combination of Hucker’s resistance and the
last-stride aberrations of the attackers
crowding in on him, particularly the flawed
shooting of the otherwise splendid Steve
Archibald, kept the teams level for 109 minutes
on an afternoon that Tottenham’s greater
depth of experience and ability might have
turned into a parade.
“When Fenwick powerfully headed in the
equaliser…it was a fine reward for the defiant
spirit of Hucker and for the exemplary leadership
of Roeder. The draw was good news…for the
appealing manager of Rangers, Terry Venables,
whose chirpy assertation that his men would win
on Thursday surprised no one.”
RANGERS: Hucker, Fenwick, Gillard, Waddock,
Hazell, Roeder, Currie, Flanagan, Allen
(Micklewhite 52), Stainrod, Gregory.
EDITORIAL SNIPPET: “Nothing could
be more fitting for Queens Park
Rangers than that they should
celebrate their centenary this season
by reaching the FA Cup final for the
first time.”
YEADING V
NEWCASTLE UTD
AN APPETISING FA Cup third
round tie between Yeading
FC and Newcastle United
was staged at Loftus Road
on Sunday 9th January 2005.
Ryman (Isthmian) League
members Yeading were unable
to host the game at their
regular home ground at The
Warren, because the capacity
was limited to 3,500. So the
rules at the time allowed this
fixture to be moved eight miles
down the road to QPR.
In the match itself, Newcastle
scored two second-half goals
to win 2-0 before a crowd of
10,824.
A match report by Sam Wallace
in The Independent newspaper
had the headline: “Reality bites
as Newcastle bring Yeading’s
Cup odyssey to end”.
Wallace wrote: “It was the 51
minutes of their lives. A period
of parity between the artisans
of Yeading and the millionaires
of Newcastle when the 123
league places between the
two clubs fell away and left
us with a tense, physical FA
Cup tie between two sets of
footballers divided only by the
lives they go back to today…
defeat was the end of their
dream but it only tells a small
part of their story.
“Yeading succumbed to a
Lee Bowyer goal that finally
established Newcastle’s
supremacy after 51 minutes
of embarrassment for the
Premiership side. Tackled,
hustled, challenged and kicked,
Graeme Souness’s team were
substantially matched by
their Ryman Premier League
opponents.
“As they took the applause
from a generous stand full of
Newcastle fans, Yeading could
look back with pride…no-one
gave more than goalkeeper
Delroy Preddie who broke a
finger when he tipped away
a Jermaine Jenas shot on 20
minutes and carried on without
complaint. Preddie was on a
deal with a tabloid newspaper
that would see him win a brand
new car to replace his £800
L-reg Ford Escort if he held out
for 90 minutes. As the minutes
ticked by, he must have
thought that the prospect of a
life improved by power steering
and climate control looked a
distinct possibility.
“Up until the goal, Yeading
had been Newcastle’s equal
in every department….Shola
Ameobi made the first goal
out on the right wing. Escaping
from three challenges, he
upset the disciplined balance
of Yeading’s team. Bellamy
darted down the right side of
the area to pick up Ameobi’s
pass and cut the ball back to
Bowyer who was unmarked
at the back post. The second
goal came just after the hour
when Ameobi nodded home
substitute Darren Ambrose’s
free-kick from the right.
“Only with a minute left did
Yeading genuinely threaten
the Newcastle goal when
Brown’s drive was tipped wide
by Steve Harper. The confident
swagger of Yeading’s striker
DJ Campbell, a little man with
a big reputation around the
Ryman League, did not make a
great impression on Jean-
Alain Boumsong, the £8m
signing making his Newcastle
debut.
“In the end, there was plenty
for Yeading to celebrate.
Preddie got the new car, if only
for three months. His teammates
helped themselves to
their opponents’ shirts and
the assistant manager, Derek
Brown, got Bellamy’s boots for
his son. Next Saturday Yeading
face Harrow Borough at home.
Their 51 minutes of fame are
up, but what they achieved will
endure much longer.”
Yeading later merged with local
rivals Hayes FC in 2007 to form
Hayes & Yeading United.
TONY INCENZO RECALLS SOME WEIRD AND
WONDERFUL STORIES...
MADE IN NON-LEAGUE
I HOPE you enjoyed my recent interviews
in the Hoops programme with Charlie Austin and
Mark Warburton about their early days in nonleague
football.
Another man I spoke to for my Non-League Paper
column was QPR loanee Andre Gray. He made six
appearances for the England ‘C’ semi-professional
international team between 2012 and 2014.
Gray received his first call-up when he was 20
years old and playing non-league football for
Luton Town at the time.
He told me: “I remember the excitement of
making my England C debut against the Russia
Under-21 side in Moscow. It was a very tough
game but very enjoyable.
“The Russians had players from Real Madrid
and so on and some of them had already played
Champions League football. We lost 4-0 and
conceded three sloppy goals but it was a really
decent learning curve.
“Overall, I loved my time with England C. We
travelled to countries that we probably never
would have visited otherwise and saw some
unreal places.
“The support from the coaching staff was really
hands on and they were very good at the diet
and psychology side of things. People might be
surprised by how professional the England C
set-up is.
“It was such an honour to be capped at
international level as a non-league player.
I found it a great opportunity to test myself
against top young footballers from places like
Russia and Turkey.
“Most of the players around me in the squad
moved into the Football League and the
Premier League. I am sure that my England C
appearances helped me progress as a footballer
– the whole experience prepared me towards
playing at a much higher level of club football.
“I would definitely recommend England C to any
young non-league players who are aspiring to
move forward in their careers.”
“Veteran Derby County captain
tagline for the photograph. But
was it an assumption rather
Two of the biggest icons
pictured in the same frame,
7th February 1970. And the
“It’s not all about glory”.
It was implied the game could
There is an anguished look on
but looking up, is Mackay.
It seemed a good illustration of
the rough and tumble involved
back in those days when
pitches were more prone to
the vagaries of the weather,
particularly when it was wet in
the early part of the year.
But whether Mackay caused
Marsh to fall could be open
to debate as their bodies and
extremities do not appear
connected.
The Derby supporters who
attended the match certainly
might have disputed the term
‘taking out’. Mackay created a
reputation for being a physical
opponent, yet he was known
to be ‘hard but fair’.
It would seem, however, that
Marsh’s anguished visage
must have turned to smiles
by the end of the Rs’ home
tie. The hosts won it 1-0 with
Mackay, who had led Derby
to promotion the previous
season while QPR came down
from the top flight, putting
through his own goal seven
minutes from time.
He had deflected a Frank
Clarke shot from Mike
Ferguson’s ball beyond his
stopper Les Green, thus
proving even a reigning
Footballer of the Year –
described by his manager
Brian Clough, who went on
to win two European Cups at
Nottingham Forest, as his best
signing – can be prone to such
misfortune.
But, as any of the surviving
vintage Rams fans present
would tell you, the guy was not
a legend without just cause.
Besides his body strength,
there was the Scottish
superstar’s strength of mind
and purpose, to go with
sublime ball skills, which had
by this time helped him propel
Heart of Midlothian to four
trophies in five seasons, after
decades of the Edinburgh
club’s trophy cabinet gathering
dust. And Tottenham Hotspur
to an historic league and FA
Cup double, the European Cup
Winners’ Cup and two more FA
Cups, the last as captain after
twice having his left leg broken.
Plus, of course, Derby to the
Division Two championship
while firing up one of the great
managerial careers.
As one of those Derby fans
present that February wrote
in recent years: “As well as the
goal I remember him (Mackay)
collecting the ball from the
net and striding with pride and
determination towards the
centre circle. Even as a young
teenager, I knew I was watching
someone to be looked up to.”
Marsh had also developed his
venerable status by the time
he played his part in what was
Rangers’ first win over Derby.
His star burned bright as his
scoring record (30 league
goals and a club record 44 in all
competitions) and flamboyant
displays led QPR to the
Division Three title and the
League Cup in the 1966/67
campaign.
And the future TV pundit
underlined his reputation on
that 1970 run which ended in
the quarter-finals against west
London neighbours Chelsea.
Marsh fired two goal doubles
in wins over South Shields and
Charlton Athletic to set up the
showdown with the Rams.
DAVE
MACKAY
Football’s
Braveheart
The
Authorised
Biography
Forewords by Derek Mackay and Denis Law
His six years at Loftus Road
began the line of succession of
adoration for Rangers players
wearing the No 10 shirt –
Stan Bowles being the prime
example – in the days before
squad numbers pushing three
figures came into the game.
The England international’s
success was all the more
remarkable, given that he
was left deaf in one ear and
suffered visual problems as
a result of a sickening clash
with Leicester City defender
John Sjoberg, while playing for
Fulham in 1963.
His jaw was broken and a bone
had punctured a nerve in his
left ear, while his sense of
balance was lost and he also
sustained a haemorrhage.
Marsh wrote in his book
‘Shooting to the Top’ that he
feared “I was going to die”.
His dad Bill persuaded him to
try and make a comeback,
which he did seven months
later. Marsh got his balance
back, although he found his
vision was ‘very narrow’ at the
start. But his normal eyesight
was restored and heading the
ball was not a problem. And
when Rangers signed him from
Fulham for £15,000 in February
1966 he ‘provided the biggest
spark needed to turn a side
of nearly men into winners’.
As Dave Mackay and Clough’s
Derby discovered in that last-
16 showdown.
Mike Donovan is an author
and award-winning journalist.
He produced Queens Park
Rangers Greatest Games
in 2013, with Stan Bowles
helping to promote it and
Les Ferdinand writing the
foreword. He has a feel for
the Bush and was taken to
Cooke’s Pie and Mash shop in
the area’s market by his mum
(who worked in the area) and
dad, attended concerts at the
fabulous Empire and hung out
socially in W12 growing up.
Mike has written a series
of football books – most
recently Football’s
Braveheart: the Authorised
Biography of Dave Mackay
which is available from Pitch
Publishing.
Brogan Moore’s second-half double was not
enough for Rangers as the visitors’ last-minute
equaliser ensured the spoils were shared at the
Powerday Stadium.
United took a sixth-minute lead when Priscilla
Martins slotted home and it remained that way
until after half-time, with Moore finding the net
to bring the R’s level.
A close-range finish soon afterwards doubled
Moore’s tally and put Steve Quashie’s side into
the lead, only for Chloe Francis to make it 2-2
with an impressive free-kick.
It looked as though Erin Pope had secured the
points for QPR when she fired into the roof of
the net with five minutes remaining.
However, Martins snatched her second of the
afternoon in stoppage time to clinch a share of
the points for her side.
Rangers’ final home game of the season takes
place on Sunday 1st May, when they take on
Norwich City Ladies (kick-off 2pm).
HOOPS
Columnist
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER PENS HIS
LATEST COLUMN…
I
t’s fair to say there’s not been much to
celebrate in the last couple of months
as poor form has seen QPR slip further from
play-off contention.
I did plan to go to Sheffield United the other
week as GB News took the breakfast show to
the 23rd floor of the Hilton Tower in Deansgate,
Manchester.
It’s only an hour’s drive over the A57 Snake Pass
and I fancied it.
It was only when breakfast show host Eamonn
Holmes asked if I’d be going to the Manchester
City v Atletico Madrid tie at the Etihad that
evening – as he wanted to discuss it on air
the following morning – that I decided a bit of
homework wouldn’t go amiss. I made a call to
an old friend at City and was able to take in the
Champions League quarter-final first leg.
In truth, I’m not sure the fare on offer in
Manchester was much of an upgrade on what
unfolded at Bramall Lane. Kevin De Bruyne’s
second-half winner gave City victory. I didn’t feel
guilty. It was work, after all.
Today’s visit of Derby will be my 30th QPR game
of the season – home and away – which I’m quite
pleased with, given I work every Saturday.
I’m looking forward to seeing our young
striker Sinclair Armstrong play for Aldershot at
Bromley later this month. Let’s hope it proves
a worthwhile loan stint. I may be able to give
you a scouting report in the Sheffield United
programme.
I hope you’re all having a great Easter and
that we’ve managed to get a decent result at
Huddersfield on Good Friday.
