“I’m <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> grandeur<br />

and gravitas of Renaissance and Baroque<br />

compositions to <strong>the</strong> mundane, suburban scenes<br />

of domestic life,” says Zoey Frank<br />

- Exclusive to <strong>Magzoid</strong><br />

Zoey Frank is an artist<br />

based <strong>in</strong> Boulder,<br />

Colorado who received<br />

her MFA <strong>in</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from Laguna College of<br />

California after study<strong>in</strong>g for four<br />

years with Juliette Aristides <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Classical Atelier at Gage Academy<br />

From early frescos and basrelief<br />

sculptures to abstract<br />

expressionism, she has been<br />

that re<strong>in</strong>force <strong>the</strong> rigidity of <strong>the</strong><br />

surface. She has started break<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up her images us<strong>in</strong>g abstract color<br />

patterns and planes to alternately<br />

expand and compress <strong>the</strong> illusion<br />

of depth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> images, draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

spectator back to <strong>the</strong> surface level.<br />

Her fasc<strong>in</strong>ation lies <strong>in</strong> how diverse<br />

techniques, rang<strong>in</strong>g from realism<br />

with <strong>the</strong> vivid colors.<br />

coexist and enrich one ano<strong>the</strong>r as<br />

our gaze wanders from one to <strong>the</strong><br />

next.<br />

She's particularly <strong>in</strong>terested<br />

<strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> grandeur and<br />

seriousness of Renaissance and<br />

Baroque compositions to <strong>the</strong><br />

everyday suburban scenes; a<br />

seventy-year-old woman's birthday<br />

party, a family picnic on <strong>the</strong> grass.<br />

Focus<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> commonplace<br />

allows her to experiment with <strong>the</strong><br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g's more formal elements,<br />

such as <strong>the</strong> angles of repetitive<br />

gestures, <strong>the</strong> arrangement of light<br />

and dark shapes, and <strong>the</strong> color<br />

pathways. The bright plastics offer<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r compositional tool to move<br />

our gaze across <strong>the</strong> canvas.<br />
