A VIEW

FROM THE TOUCHLINE

I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The

Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this

afternoon for our game against Barrow Island in the

National Conference League Division Two.

We welcome the players, supporters and committee of Barrow Island to Woolston and

hope that they have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality today.

Last weekend saw both of our Open Age sides suffer narrow defeats in games that

they had chances to win. Our NCL side put in a plucky display at Dewsbury Moor

Maroons and were unfortunate not to claim at least a share of the spoils, but it wasn’t

meant to be and we look forward to today and hopefully from our point of view we can

get back to winning ways. We know that is not going to be easy as our visitors have

been in fine form, claiming four wins on the spin after an opening day defeat, to move

upto third in the league table.

Our NWML side were bitterly disappointed to lose at home to Halton Simms Cross;

the display on the day was not good enough and Simmies took their chances and

deserved to get the win; our boys will need to dust themselves down this afternoon as

they travel to Leigh East ‘A’ looking to right the wrongs of last week.

You will see in the programme the fixtures for our Junior teams who play tomorrow. We

have plenty of excellent players (and coaches) within our Junior ranks so if you have a

spare hour or two in the morning please try and get along and show them your support.

Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why not

bring a friend along with you next time and introduce them to the Rovers!!!

Enjoy the game

Dave Whalley

Public Relations Officer

The National Conference League have announced that Irish Sportswear brand,

O’Neills, are to be their Sportswear Partner for 2022 and beyond.

This agreement will see O’Neills Irish International Sportswear provide touch-line

apparel for all 48 NCL clubs that will readily identify official team coaches, trainers,

physios, and substitutes. O’Neills will also provide a dozen water bottles for each club.

Speaking of the partnership, Paul Berry, O’Neills UK Sales Manager said, “When

Trevor and the committee asked us to consider working with the NCL, we jumped at

the chance. We identified an opportunity to help highlight official team touch line staff

through the provision of coloured t-shirts, in a similar way to that in Super League and

International Fixtures. It was felt it would help referees and match officials to better

manage the touchlines and we were happy to oblige.”

“The community game is the heartbeat of the sport and we have been fortunate

enough to have been able to do business with a number of the NCL clubs over the past

few years which has allowed us to build up a strong portfolio of customers within the

Rugby League sector.

You now see O’Neills kit at every level of Rugby League from grassroots Under 7s

teams right through to some of the top teams within Super League and the NRL.”

“Last year it was great to see St Helens being crowned Super League Champions

wearing our kit and for Penrith Panthers being crowned NRL Champions - also in

O’Neills kit, just ten years after we entered the UK market.”

“O’Neill’s Sportswear are proud to be known as the brand leader globally within Rugby

League and we certainly felt that we wanted to put something back into rugby league at

community level to support the clubs, their volunteers and their players.”

Chair of the NCL, Trevor Hunt, added “It is fantastic that a company of the standing of

O’Neills, is partnering the National Conference League, and we are delighted to have

them on board. Every one of the NCL clubs will benefit from this, and it will certainly

add yet another high-quality element to the presentation of our competition.”

OUR NEXT HOME GAME

SATURDAY 30TH APRIL

WOOLSTON ROVERS V CROSFIELDS

DON’T MISS IT!!!

The Open Age Section have both teams playing at home on Saturday 30th April, with

the NCL side playing Crosfields in a local ‘derby’ whilst our NWML side face Liverpool

Lizards in the NWML Trophy.

As a club we are looking to take advantage of this and have the OA and

Junior Section working together on the day to generate a carnival

atmosphere.

We think this is a great opportunity for the Junior Section to have

stalls where they can raise funds for their team and also reach out

to parents or members of the community who may have small

businesses and would like to have a stall.

We are looking for an ice cream van and also a bouncy

castle if possible. We also have our friends from

Man Talk coming down and having a stall.

The idea is to get a big crowd down and show

the town what a great club we are; after the

success of the Beverley game where we

had mascots and ball boys from the Junior

Sections, as well as a curtain raiser, we need

to keep that momentum going between both Sections.

If there is an interest, please contact me directly.

Thanks

WOOLSTON ROVERS 42 BEVERLEY 16

(NCL 26/03/2022)

Woolston Rovers produced an excellent performance to defeat a spirited Beverley

side in the National Conference League Division Two at the Limestone

Construction Field, Monks Sports Club and make it three wins on the spin to

move into second place in the league table.

Prior to the NCL game, Rovers Under 13s Greens defeated Waterhead Warriors

in a curtain raiser, and then mascots were provided from the Under 7s,

Under 8s, Under 9s and Under 10s whilst the ballboys were from the Under 12

side making it a truly ‘club’ afternoon.

Rovers opened the scoring in the twelfth minute stand off Theo Holt brilliantly

stepped through a gap to core on the right. Scrum half Ben Dixon converted

and then eleven minutes later great work by prop forward Harry Files saw him

offload to hooker Adam Files who broke through two tackles and found Dixon

in support to score under the posts. Dixon added the conversion to his own try.

Beverley got off the mark on the half hour when scrum half Lewis Poskitt

found stand off Fran Coggle who evaded three defenders to score on the left.

Full back Josh Poskitt converted but then six minutes later a great break by

Rovers centre Dan Fearnley was carried on by H Files and after substitute

Sam Wood was held ten metres short A Files went from dummy half and

brushed off three defenders to score at the left of the posts. Dixon added the

conversion.

A minute before the break great hands by Rovers on the last tackle saw the

ball whipped across the width of the pitch before substitute Paul Alcock put

Fearnley through a huge gap to score on the right. Dixon converted to give

Rovers a healthy 24-6 half time advantage.

Seven minutes into the second half Rovers substitute Matt Jenkins was sin

binned for holding down and three repeat sets for Beverley paid off as the

extra man created an overlap for winger Beau English to score in the right

corner. J Poskitt converted from out wide and then just before Rovers returned

to a full complement of players Beverley went over once again when L Poskitt

made a great break that split the Rovers defence and h found centre Jon

Norman on his outside to score in the left corner and reduce the deficit to eight

RECENT MATCH REPORTS

FOR OUR OPEN AGE TEAMS

Just after the hour mark Rovers put paid to any hopes of a Beverley comeback

when H Files was held just short and A Files went from dummy half and

brushed off three defenders to score at the side of the posts. Dixon converted

and four minutes later a lovely chip into the in-goal area by full back Morgan

Williams saw winger Dan Griffiths pounce to score on the left. Dixon added the

conversion.

Eight minutes from time A Files once again caused havoc in the Beverley

defence as he went from dummy half and found second row Alex Smith who

powered over on the left. Dixon completed a perfect afternoon with the boot

by landing his seventh conversion to round off a very impressive 42-16 win for

Rovers.

The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers loose forward Ryan Brown. He

was very well supported by stand off Theo Holt, prop forward Harry Files and

hooker Adam Files.

After the game Rovers Head of rugby Mal Holt said, “That was a great result

for us to make it three on the bounce. Beverley provided us with tough opposition

but we performed very well to turn in an impressive display. Our pack

were very physical and set the platform for our backs to control the game and

provide the structure to punish the visitors. I thought we out enthused them in

defence and had more quality in attack. It is still early days and the hard work

continues next week as we take our first step away from home at Dewsbury

Moor Maroons.”

DEWSBURY MOOR MAROONS 24 WOOLSTON ROVERS 18

(NCL 02/04/2022)

Despite a very spirited performance Woolston Rovers suffered a narrow defeat

in their first away game of the season with Dewsbury Moor Maroons emerging

victorious in the NCL Division Two on Saturday afternoon.

Dewsbury opened the scoring after fourteen minutes when prop forward Tom

Berry powered over. Scrum half Aiden Ineson converted and four minutes later

Berry went over for his second try. Ineson added the conversion to establish a

12-0 lead for the Maroons.

Rovers responded just after the halfway mark of the half when prop forward

Harry Files crashed over. Scrum half Ben Dixon converted but then eleven

minutes before the break Moor prop forward Tobias Richardson scored a try.

Ineson added the conversion to give the home side a 18-6 half time advantage.

Two minutes into the second half Dixon went in for a try for the visitors. Full

back Morgan Williams converted but then ten minutes later Ineson crossed for

a try for Maroons that he added the conversion to make the gap twelve points

once again.

With ten minutes remaining Rovers gave themselves hope when H Files went

in for his second try. Williams converted to narrow the deficit to just six points

but despite the best efforts of the Green & Gold men to grab a share of the

points they were unable to breach the Dewsbury defence and they held on for

a 24-18 win.

Best for Rovers were prop forwards Harry Files and Ryan Hickman along with

second row Dan Fearnley.

After the game Rovers Head of Rugby Mal Holt said, “It was a narrow defeat

for us on the road but a game that was well within our capability to have won

so that is disappointing. We had a few forced changes due to work commitments

that meant new faces coming in and a few positional changes and we

didn’t get off to the best start which meant that we were always chasing the

game. We competed well and if a few decisions had gone in our favour, then

we may have brought home the two league points but it wasn’t to be and we

didn’t get off to the best start which meant that we were always chasing the

game. We competed well and if a few decisions had gone in our favour, then

we may have brought home the two league points but it wasn’t to be and we

dust ourselves down and go again next week at home to Barrow Island.”

WOOLSTON ROVERS ‘A’ 22 HALTON SIMMS CROSS 26

(NWML 02/04/2022)

Woolston Rovers ‘A’ suffered a disappointing home defeat to Halton Simms

Cross in the NWML Division Three on Saturday afternoon at the Limestone

Construction Field, Monk Sports Club.

Rovers ‘A’ opened the scoring in the seventh minute when a clever delayed

pass from stand off Craig Lawton put loose forward Dom all through a gap

to score on the left. Lawton converted but eight minutes later Simms Cross

replied when some individual brilliance from full back Jack White saw him skip

round three defenders to score on the left.

Lawton landed a penalty for Rovers following interference in a tackle but

Simms Cross regained the ball straight from the restart and quick hands

across the field saw winger Nathan Outten squeeze over in the right corner.

White landed a fine touchline conversion to edge his side in front for the first

time.

On the half hour a great catch by Rovers full back James Tarpey from a high

kick was followed by a fine run by winger Liam Sullivan and after a quick play

the ball hooker Tom Gaskell put Lawton through a gap and he raced forty

metres to score on the left. He converted his own try but then two minutes

before the break Simmies responded when a long ball from White found

winger Zach Oldham who managed to ground the ball in the left corner to

make the half time score 14-14.

A nip and tuck start to the second half saw both sides cancel each other out

but then just after the hour mark Rovers went back ahead when a lovely ball

from Tarpey found centre Wil Maudsley who stretched out to score in the left

corner but the lead was short lived as good play from Simms Cross second

row John Nanson created room for White to score at the side of the posts.

White added the conversion to nudge his side back in front.

The impressive White, the clear man of the match, went over for a deserved

hat trick with eight minutes remaining; he converted to put the visitors into an

eight point lead and that proved to be pivotal as a last minute try from Sullivan,

after he collected a Ball kick superbly to score in the right corner, proved to be

a mere consolation as Simms Cross celebrated a hard earned 26-22 win in a

very entertaining end-to-end encounter.

Best for Rovers ‘A’ were full back James Tarpey, stand off Craig Lawton and

substitute Ben Moore.

After the game Rovers ‘A’ coach Liam Lawton said, “We only have ourselves

to blame for losing that game although you have to give a lot of credit to

Simms Cross who gave everything despite being depleted. We started well

enough but after going in front early on we were guilty of ‘over playing’ and

forcing the pass when a quick play the ball would have been more beneficial.

We need to cut out the silly errors and needless penalties because that is

the root of our problem. We have some really good players in the side and

I’m sure once we start to control games better then we will begin to get more

positive results.”

ROVERS ‘A’

James Tarpey, Tom Lowe, Wil Maudsley, Dec Houghton, Liam Sullivan, Craig

Lawton, Aaron Barber, Sean Withington, Tom Gaskell, Ryan Palin, Tom Fagan,

Nathan Maguire, Dom Ball.

Tom Atherton, Tom Harvey, Lewis Dawson, Ben Moore.
