FROM THE TREATMENT TABLE

Jack Sherrie completes his two match suspension

this weekend, after his controversial red card

against Beith. Tommy Maitland gets married

today & Darren Miller is on holiday, other than

that only a few niggling injuries to manage, as

you’d expect at this stage of the season.

Of our long-term absentees, Todd Henderson’s

latest knee operation went really well & he is

already back in light training, which is great

news. Ross McCrea (knee) remains out.

Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to Portland Park

for this afternoon’s match with Kilbirnie Ladeside.

I’d like to extend that welcome to Thomas

Molloy, Shaun Dillon, Gordon Ronney & all

those visiting us today from Kilbirnie.

Great to be back in front of the fans for

the last few remaining games, can’t

believe it’s been two months since our last

game at Portland. These things make a

real difference. We’re hoping the home

support can push us on to a top ten finish,

it’s not just about safety for me. Top ten

is a true representation of a really solid

season for us, I believe.

We had a really good run in January-

February, went on a bit of a rough patch &

now look to have recovered a bit of form

back at just the right time to consolidate

what we have been doing this campaign.

I’ve said it since last pre-season, it would

be a battle to stay in this Division, and so

it has proved, and we want to be a Premier

Division side next season. We have to

get it over the line in the next couple of

games. The boys have shown real

togetherness the last couple of months,

especially when we’ve had some key

players out, and that sort of bond will do

us well for the remainder of the season.

Kilbirnie are a real danger to us this week,

they’ve been in phenomenal form

recently. We’ve been pleased with our

form since Christmas, but they’ve been on

a hell of a run! They’ll see this as a

winnable game after the run they’ve been

on, so we won’t be taking them lightly at

all. Thomas & Shaun have really

transformed a great club in the short time

they’ve been there, we wish them all the

best (today aside, clearly).

The Development Team finished their

season last Friday, and what a great full

debut season it has been for them as a

collective. We have produced some really

exciting talent from that team already &

it’s been a sound investment from the club

over the last couple of years.

It’s Chappy’s Testimonial Dinner next

Saturday night & there are still a few

tickets remaining. A bona fide Troon

legend he is, I’m sure you’ll all come out

in support of a man who has given this

club everything he’s had over the last 13

years. Let’s look after one of our own.

“Thanks for your

continued

support, and

enjoy the game!

‘Mon The Troon!”

Jimmy K.

TESTIMONIAL YEAR

www.troonfootballclub.co.uk/chappy

COVID put plans for Chappy’s Testimonial Year on

hold, but we are delighted to be able to announce

dates for his first events.

Scott “Chappy” Chatham first signed for Troon from

Bonnyton Thistle in 2008 & retired last summer after

13 stellar years of service to the club. He played in

most positions on the park for us, enjoyed his best

years at Portland Park & and finished his career in

the blue & black.

The least we as a support can do is turnout in

numbers for these events & pay tribute to a man

who has given us so much to celebrate his career &

thank him for his service.

Keep an eye on the website for more details nearer

the time!

The next event of Chappy’s Benefit Year arrives next Saturday, with a Testimonial Dinner

at the South Beach Hotel!

Hosted by Comedian & TV personality Des Clarke, a magnificent evening is in the offing,

with a delicious 3 course meal with drinks on arrival.

Tickets will sell quickly, so please buy yours now from Neil Sanderson on: 07825 648776

MAN OF THE MATCH: Tommy Maitland

Solid at the back yet again from Tommy, and he even popped up with the equaliser

this week! Led by example when we needed him, star man yet again for me.

Only time will tell if this is two points dropped or a

point gained, but an equaliser deep in injury time always

feels like a victory & the 95th minute celebrations

at Blair Park certainly reflected that!

It was a stuffy start between two evenly matched teams

before the visitors stretched their legs and started to

dominate proceedings. Controversy raged in the 24th

minute after Chris Robertson cynically chopped down

Dean Fulton as he bore down on goal, but Referee Euan

Birch only saw fit to flash a yellow card. Sam

McCloskey’s resultant free-kick dipped narrowly over

McDonalds’ crossbar. The hosts began to grind their way

back into the contest, and Marc McKenzie’s efforts &

quality in the final areas were proving tough for our

back line to handle.

HALF-TIME: HURLFORD UNITED 0-0 TROON F.C.

Troon were forced into a change at the interval, illness

forcing Mark Morrison off, and that brought a change as

Stephen Wilson was introduced amid a reshuffle. The

visitors were comfortably on top at this stage now, and

sought to take full advantage of a little uncertainty in the

Troon midst. And so it proved, some concerted pressure

from the ‘Ford front ranks forced a mistake from keeper

Fisher & “Squib” was on hand to finish at the second

attempt. If Troon felt aggrieved at being one down, they

came back in the best possible way. With five minutes

played of time added on (courtesy of a long stoppage

following a serious looking injury to Sam Jamieson) three

consecutive corners were forced & well defended by

Hurlford - before Tommy Maitland rose to challenge for a

header, only to produce a stunning finish to smash home

and spark wild celebrations.

4 points out of 6 against Hurlford is an excellent return

this season, very few teams will achieve that & feel like

they should have done better. Kilbirnie next week in a

vital match at Portland Park.

SEMI-FINAL STAGE

FINAL: Sunday 22nd May 2022 (Venue TBC)

Auchinleck Talbot VS. Sauchie

Spartans VS. Bonnyrigg Rose

The South Challenge Cup is the “new kid on the block” for the clubs at our level, but it has quickly

become one of the major Cup competitions - as you can see from this season’s semi-final line-up.

Competed for by all teams in Tier 5 (Lowland League) and Tier 6 (East, West & South of Scotland) of

the Scottish Football Pyramid, it has been a mammoth season to get through all the ties, but we now

have two glittering semi-final ties in front of us.

How will this trophy compete in the coming years against a resurgent Scottish Junior Cup? Especially

after the recent Lowland League “closed door” voting controversy?

Watch this space!

SEMI-FINAL STAGE

FINAL: Sunday 5th June 2022 (Rugby Park)

Auchinleck Talbot VS. Kirkintilloch Rob Roy

Petershill VS. Yoker Athletic

The Scottish Junior Cup is one of the oldest Cup competitions in the world, and has always been the

“Holy Grail” of teams at our level given it’s rich & prestigious history.

Given recent changes in the Non-League game, it may have lost it’s position as the primary Cup

competition, but it still holds all the appeal of before; direct Scottish Cup entry, a televised Final &

healthy prize money for it’s winners.

With ambitious plans recently released by Scottish Junior FA Chief Operating Officer Alex McDowall,

it looks like it will return to it’s previous lofty position as THE Non-League Trophy.

Once again - Watch this space!

WELCOME

1970s of supporters brandishing flags with

bumblebees on them, and many supporters stick

to this title to this day - especially since the

return of the gold & black hoops in recent years.

The club’s widely acknowledged nickname is

“The Blasties” and there are a number of

suggestions as to the real origin of it: according

to local hear-say, it may relate to the blast

furnaces at the local iron works which were a

major employer in the area for a number of

years.

A very warm welcome to Kilbirnie

Ladeside!

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE

OPPOSITION?

The history of Kilbirnie Ladeside Football Club

dates back to their formation in 1901 and are a

football team from the North Ayrshire village of

Kilbirnie. Their main local rivals in the Garnock

Valley, as well as Dalry Thistle, are Beith

Juniors. Their traditional club colours are gold &

black with a white change strip. In their early

days, Ladeside were known as “The Bumble

Bees” thanks to their very gold & black banded

shirts.

The club’s first ever match was held in snowy

conditions and it was said the brightly coloured

shirts made them stand out “like bumblebees in

the snow.” There are even images from the

However, the most compelling argument has it

that the nickname derives from a Rabbie Burns

poem - “The Inventory” written in 1786.

Queen of the South may be the only football

team mentioned in the bible - but Kilbirnie were

quoted by the bard!

Kilbirnie’s home ground is Valefield Park, a

compact but atmospheric ground which boasts a

pavilion with terracing, two large enclosures on

the far side & banked terracing behind each

goal. Behind Valefield Park (and sharing a

pavilion with Ladeside) there are five smaller

parks, which are used by boys clubs & the well

known Kilbirnie Amateur side.

The adventure that began in 1901 continues…

THE GAFFER(S)...

Thomas Molloy & Shaun Dillon were

appointed in August after spending 4 years

in charge of Greenock Juniors, after Martin

Ferry stood down following a dismal start

to the season.

With their experience, their presence has

been felt straight away & improvement in

the playing squad & results was immediate.

A brighter future is ahead for the Blasties.

KILBIRNIE LADESIDE

26 year old “Frizz” started the season

with Troon & was a very popular

member of the dressing room & the

squad.

Formerly top scorer at Greenock under

Molloy & Dillon, he is a terrific signing

for the new management team and has

made an instant impact on the team.

Liam may well be in the twilight of his

career, but he is still one of the very

best midfielders in the West.

A touch of class over nearly two

decades in the engine room for

Kilbirnie, Irvine Meadow and Kilwinning,

“Ginto” has coaching experience as well

& can guide the Blasties into a new era.

ONES TO WATCH

Graham “Yaya” Muiry is another staple

from the Junior football days in the

West. A fantastic servant for Largs

Thistle in particular, he is a physical &

energetic midfielder who is partial to a

goal or two.

Another perhaps in the twilight of his

career, but still one of the fittest

players around.

26 year old Jon has all the ability in the

world & is one of the most talented

players in the West.

Began his career in St. Mirren’s youth

academy before joining Greenock

Morton, he has been a talisman for

Kilbirnie since joining in August 2017

roon and Kilbirnie Ladeside have

a long & familiar history

stretching back decades in

Ayrshire Junior football. Whilst

perhaps not as close as some

other Ayrshire clubs, the 19 miles

between the two parks still

makes for an Ayrshire rivalry in the West,

although a one-sided rivalry is possibly the

most accurate description of the fixture over

the years.

TROON F.C. YOUTH ACADEMY

PLAYER PATHWAY

Through adversity brings opportunity, and the last year

has been a magnificent one for our Troon F.C. Youth

Academy players!

No less than EIGHTEEN players from our Troon F.C.

Development Team & Under 19s have been involved in

our first team this season, with a number making their

debuts in league matches & a few even scoring for the

first team!

That’s what Troon have been about since Jimmy Kirkwood

took over in 2010 – if you’re good enough, you’re old

enough – but it’s been great to see such a bumper

number grab their opportunity with both hands this

season. And the advancement of the Lowlands

Development League has really propelled these lads on.

Can’t wait to see what 2022 has in store for this crop of

talented youngsters!

additions to our club in recent times, and this talented crop

to the stage where almost all of the players have been up

with the first team at points this season.

The Development League is the perfect place for them to

learn their trade, and there have been some excellent

games which are certainly worth following on a Friday

night.

Home games are predominantly played at Queen Margaret

Academy with 8pm kick-offs. Follow the website for details
