The grant cycle opens each summerwith the announcement of the grant guidelines and a series ofGrant Writing Workshops, which were held virtually last year.Funding for these grants is made possible by the MiddlesexCounty Board of County Commissioners through the MiddlesexCounty Cultural and Arts Trust Fund. I guessThe Things WeReally NeedDoes it ever occur to anyonethat not everybody can afford acar or a cellphone or a computer,especially those on a fixed income?Yet society today almostdemands that we get at leastthe latter two of these devices!Meanwhile we have thousandsof younger folks who cannot doWhere is theAccountability?I have watched in amazementand shock the recent events thathave come to light in the townof Clark, New Jersey whereMayor Sal Bonaccorso, PoliceChief Mato’s and Sergeant Teston(Head of Internal Affairs)were caught on various audiotapes secretly recorded by anotherhigh-ranking officer makingincredibly inappropriate andracist remarks.Words like “spook”, “shine”and of course the “N” wordwere used without fear and oftensaid in a laughing carefreemanner. As bad as that sounds…add to it the Mayor himself degradethe ability of female officersto do the job as well as aman in front of other townshipemployees - it’s really bad.But wait - this happened severalyears ago, the Prosecutor’s officetook over the Police Department,identified another PoliceCaptain with credible misconductallegations and promised afull investigation…. 21 monthslater after a $400,000 secretpayout to the whistleblower PoliceOfficer, (3) fully paid highranking officer suspensions andstill no determination by theprosecutor’s office??? Could itbe the Mayor is in his sixth termin office with substantial politicalpower? Are we to assumethe Clark City Council had noidea what was going on whenit approved this settlement?Wasn’t it true that until a fewdays ago this outrage was completelyswept under the rug withthe hope it would “go away”??If the justice system typicallytook this long for criminal mattersto be resolved just imaginehow long a homicide, robbery ordrug case would take to see thescales of justice. Our justice systemwould be rendered useless.We take great pride in the CityTHE COMMUNITY VOICEthey want this war to go on. Atthe same time here in America,inflation keeps going up withno end in sight, and Mr. Bidenis blaming the war in Ukraineis the cause of it. What an excuse!Inflation has been goingon before the war in Ukraine,and it is just so odd when Bidensimple math without a tech gadgetor speak proper English iftheir lives depended upon it. Itseems to me we shouldn’t evenhave history teachers or geographyteachers or a whole bunchof other educators when onecan simply punch a key hereand there and find the solutionto a myriad of questions. Imaginethe taxes we wouldn’t haveto pay! Perhaps when we oldergot in, those in power causedmore problems with this inflation.Wall Street is making billionson this price gouging andwhat's in your wallet? Officersof different ethnic, gender andcultures have blended togetherto become one for the bettermentof those we serve proudlyeach and every day.Yet less than a year ago - a femaleSergeant who happens toalso be Hispanic was attackedas a racist by social media outsiderslooking for attention overthe arrest and confiscation of abicycle…the outrage??? Hehappened to be a young manof color… he wasn’t assaulted,called vile names or treatedunfairly. The Sergeant did herjob in response to numerouscomplaints by city residents inregards to reckless bike ridersin groups all over town, wastrying to protect the young manfrom hurting himself or others,had previously warned theyoung man and the group hewas with to enjoy riding yourbicycles but just do it safely asto not endanger citizens, motoristand themselves. The irony isthe guardians of the young manand others involved understoodthe officers’ actions, the bicyclewas returned within an hour andthe young man left with no impacton his record but hopefullya valuable lesson learnedBut a full investigation waslaunched by the prosecutor’soffice for full transparency tothose outside the city who wereconcerned, and the Sergeantrightfully was cleared of wrongdoingseveral months later. Forseveral months, the Sergeanthad a cloud of suspicion overher head which she had to endureand ultimately lost out onan opportunity to oversee thecommunity policing unit despitea long and proactive rolewith helping city youth and officersalike.So where is the accountabilitywithin the City of Clark forclearly outrageous and offensivebehavior by its so called“leaders”? Imagine being aperson of color driving throughClark or living there…. Wouldyou have confidence in your localPD to have your best interestat heart during any type ofencounter whether confrontationalor not??? Not when youhear the types of foul languagethat is apparently acceptable inClark…It’s disgusting.Body cameras, transparencyand accountability are completelyand correctly used to ensurepolicing is done correctlybut the blatant misuse of taxpayermoney, political power,and accountability does waymore damage to the communitytrust in its officers than takinga bicycle ever did which wassolely done to protect the youngman from himself….so why isthis not on the national radar???I think we know the answer…True change in the nationalnarrative of policing will neverchange until the old schoolmindset of protecting your ownat the top is condemned… Racismis ignorance based on misconceptionsand sadly the leadershipof Clark NJ is the uglyexample of this especially whenthose aware of this behavior acceptthis by their silence evenwhen they know in their heartsit’s an outrage.Roman McKeonRetired Police Chiefof the City of Perth Amboy*Letters to the Editor Continued on Page 13Keep those Letters Coming! Check the City Website orwww.amboyguardian.com to see if the meeting will take placevia phone or video conference or for updates on meeting times,places, and details how to participate.Social Security to Offer Self-Attestation of SexMarker in Social Security Number RecordsPress ReleaseKilolo Kijakazi, Acting Commissioner of Social Security,announced that the agency will offer people the choice to selfselecttheir sex on their Social Security number (SSN) record.The agency anticipates this option will be available in the fallof 2022.“The Social Security Administration is committed to reducingbarriers and ensuring the fair treatment of the LGBTQ+ communityby updating our procedures for Social Security numberrecords,” said Acting Commissioner Kijakazi. “This policychange will allow people to self-select their sex in our recordswithout needing to provide documentation of their sex designation.”People who update their sex marker in Social Security’s recordswill need to apply for a replacement SSN card. They willstill need to show a current document to prove their identity, butthey will no longer need to provide medical or legal documentationof their sex designation once the policy change becomeseffective. SSN cards do not include sex markers.In February 2022, the agency issued guidance instructing employeesto accept evidence documents that contain non-binaryidentifiers (e.g., “X”) for original SSN and replacement SSNcard applications, and other updates to the agency’s internalSSN records. The agency is exploring possible future policyand systems updates to support an “X” sex designation for theSSN card application process.
