Scenes from Massadona. . .
by Jennifer Miskimins
Teaching Assistant
Remember the built-in air conditioning, the delightful smell of outdoor plumbing in the late
afternoon, and the nightly walks up to the Massadona Tavern? You guessed it, PEGN 316, the Junior
level field session was in full swing again this year. Seventeen students attended this year’s session,
which was held from May 7 th to the 18 th . As always, alumni support was critical to the success of the
program. Perennial supporter Chevron sponsored a tour of the Rangely Field, and Tom Brown Inc.
sponsored a visit to a hydraulic fracture treatment, which was then tied into a new fracturing exercise.
Alumni’s Jim Baker (Chevron) and Adam Sayers (Tom Brown) are thanked for their support and
organization of these tours. In an unusual twist, the weather was warm and sunny every day of the
session with the exception of the annual raft trip day. The session concluded with the raft trip through
Dinosaur National Monument, where Dr. Thompson was responsible for starting a water fight. His
words of wisdom? “Always make sure you have the bucket in your boat!"
