every day in their family and social life.
The prophetic mission of the family, first of all,
is exercised within the family by encouraging and
helping family members live fully their Christian
vocation. It includes the task of defending and
spreading the faith, a task that has its roots in the
sacraments of baptism and confirmation. Along
with the Church, parents and children can play
an important part in the prophetic activity of the
family with regard to those who are outside of it.
Above all the Church’s missionary vocation depends
both qualitatively and quantitatively on
families. The Christian family is an example of
what the world should be. It is in a very real sense
the Church in the world.
3. The Kingly Mission of the Christian Family
(Jn. 18:33...)
The domestic Church shares in Christ’s kingly
office. The first function of a king is to rule, and
first of all to rule himself. Christ demonstrated
extraordinary kingly self-rule during his passion
and death. Since spouses are called to give themselves
to one another, they should, through their
participation in Christ’s kingly office, overcome
all selfishness and all that goes contrary to a loving
self-surrender. “By virtue of their kingly mission,
lay people have the power to uproot the rule
of sin within themselves and in the world, by their
self-denial and holiness of life.”

Just as Christ exercises his royal power by serving
us, so also the Christian finds the authentic
meaning of his participation in the kingship of his
Lord in sharing his spirit and practice of service
to man. Through the kingly mission of the family
the members become a community at the service
of mankind.
The Christian family is defended against all the
evil powers of this world by the help of the Spirit
of God, and has its own part to play in bringing
the whole of creation under God’s kingship. By
the help of the Holy Spirit, along with the Church,
the family participates in the spreading of the royal
dominion of God over all creation.
The kingly mission of the family is to extend
the kingdom of God in one another’s hearts; thus
the family contributes jointly to the glory of God
in each other promoting the life and development
of God’s own family, and furthering the Christian
transformation of the entire world.
This tiny flock (family) shows the participation
in the kingly mission of Christ first of all through
its profound respect for the dignity of the human
person within the family itself - between husband
and wife and their children. Together with the
universal Church the Christian family - the “domestic
Church” loudly proclaims the kingship of
Jesus Christ through daily life of its members.
