Bridal Chamber (Gnuno)
The image Bridal-Chamber can be found in
many scriptural texts of the Old Testament and
New Testament (Joel 2:16; Psalms 19:6;Mtt 9:15;
Mtt 22:10; Mk 2:19; Lk 5:34). The Syriac word
Gnuno is used for the term bridal chamber.
The term Gnuno is frequently found in liturgical
texts. Gnunoor the biblical chamber is a recurring
theme in the prayer of shehimo. The lilyo
of Tuesday remembers in its final boutho about
the watchfulness that should be followed by the
church to enter the bridal chamber.
In the third qaumo of lilyo of Wednesday, the
qoloexpects the entering of the departed into the
bridal chamber with the robe of glory. As in theqolo
of Thurdsay Sapharo, the term Gnuno is an
eschatological expectation of the martyrs and
saints. In the prayers of Shehimo, it is also pictured
as the image of paradise. So, it is a repeating

theme and also a favourite image for the Syriac
writers. The bridal chamber portrays the
eschatological expectations of the experience of
encountering God.
Purity is an important aspect to fulfil all the
encampments of marriage. The loyalty of the bride
towards the bridegroom is important. The period
between the betrothal and mesthuso which is the
public announcement of marriage, the bride
should live in purity. Similarity, the church should
live in sanctity until the second coming of her
bridegroom. This loyalty and sanctity are what
makes her think and practice the liturgical cycles
that help her to live in the state of sanctification.
The bridal chamber explains the mystical union
between the church and Christ. They become one
body in the bridal chamber. As per the scriptural
revelation ‘’the two will become one flesh so they
are no longer two, but one flesh’’ (Mk 10:8; Mtt
19:5; Eph 5:31; Gen 2:24.)
