It is the naturalsociety in which husband and wife are called to give themselves inlove and in the gift of life. The family is the community in which,from childhood, one can learn moral values, begin to honor God,and make good use of freedom. Family life is an initiation into lifein society.”The Christian community is first and foremost a communitycalled to announce the Gospel to the human. As a community ofbaptized persons, the Christian is called to take an active part inthe threefold mission of the Church, that is, the priestly, the kinglyand the prophetic mission of the Church.The Threefold Mission of the Christian FamilyThe mission of the Christian family is participation in the three-166 Hm¿Ø-tUmIvkv Xntbm-tfm-Pn-°¬ skan-\m-cn, tIm´bw
fold mission of Christ and the Church. Since theChurch herself is the prolongation of Christ, it istrue to say that Christ’s triple mission as prophet,priest and king is the constitutive element of hermission. The same triple function of Christ andthe Church is also to be found in the domesticChurch.The threefold missionary role of the Christianfamily through its self-giving love and faith. As asharer in the life and mission of the Church, whichlistens to the word of God with reverence and proclaimsit confidently, the Christian family fulfilsits prophetic role by welcoming and announcingthe word of God: it thus becomes more and moreeach day a believing and evangelizing community.Karl Rahner relates the mission of the Christianfamily with the Church’s own mission. Hesays that as baptized persons the members of thefamily act in a manner which is precisely properto the Church and manifests the sign of love whichwitnesses to God. Therefore they become capablemissionaries of the Church through participationin the Trinity-centred threefold mission. Briefly weshall look at the participation of the Christian familyin the threefold mission of the Church. Throughits mission the family makes the Church presentin this world.1. The Priestly Mission of the FamilySt. Peter wrote, “You are a royal priesthood” (IPet. 2:5, 9). This refers to the common priesthoodof all believers so as to “declare the wonderfuldeeds of Him who called us out of darkness intoHis marvellous light” (I Pet. 2:9). In the church ofthe home, all family members are priests by virtueof baptism, and all offer spiritual sacrifices toGod through the daily fabric of family exchange.In the domestic sanctuary, each believer is a priestfor each other.However, the priesthood of the parents involvesthe responsibility to present God to their childrenand their children to God. The preisthood of theparents is based on their love toward God whichthey exercise in their daily life. In order to establisha relationship between God and their children,parents should seek this through their familyprayer. Praying parents give an authentic examplefor their children of their love toward God. Thechildren are capable of sensing the inner spirit offaith and love of their parents.“Lay people share in Christ’s priesthood: evermore united with him, they exhibit the grace ofZo]vXn 2022Baptism and Confirmation in all dimensions oftheir personal, family, social and ecclesial lives, andso fulfil the call to holiness addressed to all thebaptized.”As a Church in miniature, the family is really apriestly community based on a sacrament. In thefamily through their conjugal union husband andwife manifest God’s love for his Church and theyform together a Trinitarian icon. In marriage theyexercise the baptismal priesthood or commonpriesthood of Christians in a privileged way. Thefamily carries out the priesthood of the faithfulthrough daily liturgical and sacrificial life.“It is here that the father of the family, themother, children, and all members of the familyexercise the priesthood of th baptized in a privilegedway by the reception of the sacraments,prayer and thanksgiving, the witness of a holy life,and self-denial and active charity.”Every prayer of this Christian community istruly a sacrificial and priestly prayer, whether itbe grace at meals, the breaking of bread, the familyprayer, or Mass together, where they join withall the other churches in miniature to intensify evenmore the presence of Christ.Through the priestly mission of the parents,they themselves and the children begin to acceptGod as their king and try to bring his kingdominto their family through the Christian life.2. The Prophetic Mission of the Christian FamilyBy virtue of their prophetic mission, lay peopleare called to be witnesses to Christ in all circumstancesand at the very heart of the community ofmankin. The Christian family fulfils its propheticrole by welcoming and announcing the word ofGod: it thus becomes more and more each day abelieving and evangelizing community.Through the sacrament of marriage God makesthem a sign of his loving covenant between JesusChrist and his bride, the Church. They bear a specialvocation to be witnesses to the Gospel in thecontemporary world. In and through the events,problems, difficulties, and circumstances of everydaylife, God comes to them, revealing andpresenting the concrete demands of their sharingin the love of Christ for his Church in the particularfamily, social, and ecclesial situation in whichthey find themselves.
