Land pollution and soil degradation
The overconsumption of resources and the
creation of plastics are creating a global crisis of
waste disposal. Developed countries are notorious
for producing an excessive amount of waste or
garbage and dumping their waste in the oceans
and less developed countries. When this waste ends
up in landfills, it generates enormous amounts of
methane, which ranks as one of the worst ends
up in landfills, Green house gases because of its
high potential for global warming, creates severe
explosion hazards. Nuclear waste disposal has
tremendous health hazards associated with it.
Plastic, fast food packaging and cheap electronic
wastes threaten the well-being of humans. Waste
disposal is, therefore, one of the urgent current
environmental problems. Globally, food security
depends on the factor whether or not soils are in
good condition to produce crops. Soils get
damaged due to many reasons. Such reasons
include erosion, overgrazing, overexposure to
pollutants, monoculture planting, soil compaction,
land-use conversion and many more. Modern day
agriculture practices make use of chemical when
sprayed do not disappear and in fact, seeps into
the ground and thereby harms plants and crops.
Also, contaminated water is used for irrigation by
farmers due to the disposal of industrial and
agricultural waste in local water bodies.
Natural Disaster
Especially in Kerala landslides and floods is
occuring frequently from 2018. According to the
reports from environmental experts, heavy rains
are caused due to the low pressure formed in the
Arabian Sea. Arabian Sea is getting warmer and
this is causing cyclones and depressions in the
ocean and thus heavy rainfalls on a regular basis.
Experts studied and mentioned that global
warming is the reason for heating up in the oceans.
Western disturbances are basically intrusive highvelocity
winds that originate in Europe’s
Mediterranean region which is responsible for the
occurrence of sudden winter rain in the northern
parts of the Indian subcontinent. The researchers
found that human activity triggered most of the
slides.
When people build new structures, the terrain
is typically altered by the cutting of slopes and

in natural habitant. Animals in forest migrate to
places where humans live and thus diseases are
caused.
How can Christian communities come forward
and be a solution
Smaller groups among Christian communities
cab take initiatives in making everyone aware of
the current situation that the Earth is sinking due
to Human activities itself. Awareness programmes
should be conducted for all age groups. The cause
of pollution and solutions should be demonstrated
and conveyed in interesting ways such as skits,
mimes, songs and many other ways. Awareness
programs are not enough, taking steps for cleaner
environment should start from the place where
they live; Caring Earth should start from houses.
Proper waste disposal methods should be
practiced in house as well as institutions under
churches. Recycling and Reusing should be
promoted. Even a smaller plastic can be
Hazardous. Afforestations should be promoted.
Preference should be given to public transport
than personal vehicles which is a small step to
reduce vehicles on road, thus saving the nonrenewable
source of energy and also reducing
pollution. Use of fan instead of air condtioners
should be practiced for reducing the emission of
greenhouse gases. Usage of crackers in special
occasions should be stopped. Thus smaller steps
for our Mother Earth can be taken.
Moral values and Social commitment should
be emphasised from childhood itself in the coming
generation. Crime rates are increasing among
youngsters due to lack of proper knowledge in
aspects like relationships, gender equality and use
of social media. Child sexual abuse have been
observed at higher rates in recent times. Awareness
with the help of experts should be conducted in
organizations on the above aspects. Running
behind money the present generation forget about
their immediate relations. All these aspects should
be taken care for a peaceful living.
