Global warming
Methane is a greenhouse gas that has 80 times
the warming potential compared to carbon dioxide
- the biggest contributor to global warming.
Increased emissions of greenhouse gases have
caused temperatures to rise, which are causing
catastrophic events all over the world. The climate
crisis is causing tropical storms and other weather
events such as hurricanes, heat waves and flooding
to be more intense and frequent than seen before.
However, a study has found that even if all
greenhouse gas emissions were halted in 2020,
global warming would only be halted by around
2033. It is absolutely imperative that we reduce
greenhouse gas emissions; thankfully, this year is
set to see the highest uptake of renewable energy
projects around the world. 10 of the world’s 15
most polluted cities are located in India. This is
due to the emissions from vehicular traffic and
the burning of fossil fuels in cooking by poorer
families, in addition to the fumes from waste
burning. However, the country has made huge
progress thanks to its National Clean Air
Programme, which aims to reduce air pollution
levels by up to 30% by 2024.
Coal burning is also one of the biggest causes of
worldwide air pollution. Coal production releases
air pollutants and toxic chemicals such as sulphur Hm¿Ω-Iƒ
dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides into the air and
atmosphere, which increase the risk for a number
of health issues including coronary and respiratory
diseases, as well as cancer. The World Health
Organisation (WHO) estimates around 91% of the
world’s populations is breathing in and exposed
to polluted air every day.
Ozone layer depletion and Acid rain are the after
products of air pollution. Due to the release of
greenhouse gases the ozone layer which is
supposed to protect the earth from harmful UV
radiation is being depleted. Exposure to UV for a
prolonged period can cause serious illness to
humand, plants, animals etc. Acid rain Pollutants
in the atmosphere such as sulphur dioxide and
nitrogen oxides cause acid rain, which has negative
consequences for humans, wildlife and aquatic
species.
Water Pollution is caused by industrial exhaust
as well as waste disposal into the water bodies. Oil
spills from factories contributes a lot to water
pollution. This threatens marine life to a large
extent. Temperature difference and acidification
in water bodies are causing serious damage like
