Jack had been with GY Bradley Associates for over 15 years and had served successfully in sales and leadership positions all over the world. He’d chosen GY Bradley Associates because of its strong leadership culture. The leaders energized the business environment with clear visions that empower people to bring their best intentions, knowledge, and experience to the table. Now back at the Chicago headquarters office for only a couple of months in a senior leadership role with the New Ventures Group, Jack had just gotten the go-ahead to develop one of three prototype products the Board of Directors believed had great promise. To put together the proposal for the Board, Jack had recruited several trusted leaders to be members of the development team. They put together a plan and strategy to roll out the new product within four months of the Board’s approval and also provided a budget for the first six months. With the Board’s approval, Jack was confident that his vision of the project would be the inspiration for everyone he invited to work on the team. In fact, with Jack’s reputation for inspired leadership, as word got out about the project, people began volunteering to be on Jack’s team. This was the biggest challenge and opportunity for Jack’s career. And he had a tight timeframe to make it happen. He had three months to get the product production-ready, including a beta-test for customer acceptance. The fourth month would be spent getting the product into the delivery system. Jack leaned back in his chair and sighed. He knew that he needed a seasoned leader to help him make this project a success. Someone who could keep the team focused and working together while he stayed involved in some of his other work. His mind went immediately to a trusted colleague with whom he had developed a special relationship while assigned to training in India. Satyagraha Ahimsa, or known to most as “Satya”, was born in Dandi, India. Satya earned a business degree in the US and worked for several companies before coming to GY Bradley Associates. During his time in at the Chicago headquarters, Satya was in an automobile accident that left him nearly blind. At the urging of his family, he participated in rehabilitation activities designed to help him continue to work with his new sight limitations. It was during rehabilitation that he was united with Gita. Gita is a pure white Labrador Retriever endowed with sacred blue eyes. Initially, she was trained to be a guide dog, but never quite measured up to those requirements. She had, however, acquired enough of the guide dog characteristics to be of assistance to someone like Satya whose eyesight improved ever so slightly after the accident. In a short amount of time, Satya and Gita became inseparable. As Satya said often, “Gita helps me to observe what I do not see clearly.” After the accident and rehabilitation, Satya returned to work. Even with his limited sight, Satya was highly regarded for his ability to inspire people to work together as a team. He was known in the company to have supernatural wisdom around team development and performance. After several more years at the Chicago headquarters, Satya was asked to take on a special executive assignment in India because of his extensive knowledge of the Indian culture. Satya welcomed the assignment as it meant he could spend more time with his family in India. CONTINUED ON PAGE 177
