Margaret Haynes, Founder of OFAS<br />

As we start the New Year, we have some the very sad news. Our founder Margaret Haynes suddenly passed<br />

away at the end of last year.<br />

Margaret was a mentor and inspiration to me, providing guidance and aspiration for the role I perform today.<br />

I hope to be able carry on Margaret’s work with the same passion, determination and enthusiasm that she<br />

demonstrated tirelessly over the 25 years of running OFAS.<br />

All the staff at OFAS offer their sincere condolences to Margaret’s family at this very difficult time. Her<br />

children have kindly written a few words about their loving mother to share with you.<br />

Margaret Haynes, the Founder of OFAS, has died aged 79. Margaret passed away at her home in Camberley, Surrey, on<br />

Monday 17th December <strong>2018</strong>. Although Margaret had experienced difficulties with her health in recent years, her death came<br />

as an unexpected shock to her family, friends and everyone who knew and loved her.<br />

Margaret founded OFAS in 1987 and was at the helm for 25 years. From humble beginnings, Margaret’s hard work and<br />

boundless enthusiasm saw OFAS quickly develop into the primary source of impartial information and advice to the commercial<br />

furniture industry. Under Margaret’s leadership, OFAS went on to launch a number of initiatives. She ran regular events:<br />

seminars, product launches, industry parties (including an annual charity golf day) and training sessions. She oversaw the<br />

publication of more than 60 editions of the OFAS Newsletter (which latterly became the OFAS Journal). Amongst it all, she<br />

somehow found the time to launch Knowledge-Counsel, with its portfolio of independent consultants addressing the needs of<br />

facilities managers. She reluctantly retired in 2012 aged 73.<br />

Margaret’s knowledge, expertise, energy and enthusiasm garnered huge respect and admiration from the industry. She enjoyed<br />

her work greatly and valued the many friends she made along the way.<br />

Margaret was someone who lived life with gusto and she remained in very good spirits until the end, singing in her much-loved<br />

Bracknell Choral Society, seeing her many valued friends and remaining a devoted Tottenham Hotspur fan; in fact she was at a<br />

match just 48 hours before her death and she was delighted with Spurs’ injury-time winner! Above all, Margaret loved spending<br />

time with her three children, Sara, Jo and John, and her five grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by them all.<br />

Funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed but will be published on the OFAS website and social media channels when they<br />

Welcome to 2019 and to our new Journal format. We hope you had lovely festive break and wish you a<br />

very prosperous New Year.<br />

Firstly I would like to welcome 5 new Associates that joined us just before Christmas, Pledge Office Chairs, Enva,<br />

Smaartbox Limited, Yo Yo Desk and Go Office, We very much look forward to working with you all.<br />

Our industry has many challenges and opportunities, seasonality and key times, so we thought we would match<br />

this with the quarterly journals each having a theme relevant to our market. The first one being Educational Space.<br />

Historically, educational furniture was totally different from any other sector, unlike today, where there is a blurring<br />

of edges with educational, office and hospitality interiors. Other than pre-school and primary school furniture<br />

being suitably proportioned for our little ones, when you step into an academy or university, you could be in any<br />

hotel foyer or corporate office. With the high regulations on fire retardancy, quality standards, environmental<br />

accreditations and fit-for-purpose, furniture is designed to be versatile and suitable to be sold across multiple<br />

sectors. Therefore, although themed Educational Space, we are sure you will find lots of interesting articles, case<br />

studies and adverts whatever your industry sector.<br />

Observant readers will probably notice that the OFAS logo has changed and that actually it now reads CFAS. We<br />

have thought long and hard about this, acknowledging that OFAS has over 35 years in the industry. However<br />

having the acronym “O” for office really doesn’t reflect who we are today as we support the hospitality,<br />

educational, healthcare, contract and office furniture market. We have changed our name to CFAS, with the “C”<br />

acronym derived from commercial. This change comes at a time when we are also instigating many improvements<br />

and additional services for our members, providing industry information, practical advice, plus marketing<br />

and promotional opportunities. The world is changing, the stresses and issues faced are different, market,<br />

environmental, economic, social and technical pressures are growing, so here at CFAS we have taken on board a<br />

Non-Executive Director to help us develop more tools and services to better support you.<br />

Paula Marshall, our new Non-Executive Director, has been surveying members to understand their business<br />

challenges or sales and marketing dilemmas, finding very similar problems being faced whether a manufacturer,<br />

importer, reseller or dealer, whether selling a product or service. The changes over the next year reflects the ever<br />

developing needs of our members …our website has become even more user-friendly, new services are coming<br />

On-board, and we are planning networking events, plus many more activities.<br />

Working with educational<br />

establishments<br />

The key to working with educational establishments is to work in partnership to develop<br />

bespoke waste management and recycling services, with the aim of reducing waste levels<br />

and increasing recycling at each campus and site.<br />

Key to the success of the work with these clients is excellent relationships<br />

and communication channels to ensure consistently high levels of service are<br />

achieved and the waste on site is always moved in a timely and safe manner.<br />

Engagement across all levels at each institution is an important driver in<br />

achieving recycling targets. Using a combination of student roadshow events,<br />

regular on-site auditing, case studies and social media posts is perfect to be<br />

able to influence recycling attitudes and behaviours to facilitate success.<br />

Through the use of innovative reporting systems, sites should be able to track<br />

their spend, volumes and recycling rates to compare against performance<br />

expectations. Using this information is especially useful to develop<br />

infographics and other visuals that can be shared with the University’s staff<br />

and students in an at-a-glace format to increase student recycling and<br />

attitudes towards waste.<br />

Latest standards updates – what<br />

you need to know<br />

The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) are ‘the centre of knowledge; for the<br />

furniture industry. A key part of their role is keeping their members up-to-date on the latest<br />

standards update.<br />

Here they share an overview of some of the changes to office furniture standards which took place between<br />

September <strong>2018</strong> and December <strong>2018</strong>. Standards do of course always evolve, so details should be read in<br />

conjunction with any subsequent updates.<br />

New standards<br />

BS EN 1335-2: <strong>2018</strong> Office furniture. Office Work<br />

Chair. Safety Requirements<br />

This <strong>2018</strong> version replaces the previous 2009 version<br />

of the standard with immediate effect. The standard<br />

has been revised to reference the most current test<br />

method standards:<br />

• BS EN 1022: <strong>2018</strong> Furniture. Seating.<br />

Determination of strength and durability<br />

• BS EN 1728: 2012 Furniture. Seating.<br />

Determination of stability<br />

The previous test method standard, BS EN 1335-<br />

3: 2009 Office Furniture. Office Work Chair. Test<br />

methods, has now been withdrawn.<br />

Whilst the main purpose was to harmonise test<br />

methods with the new standards, it should be noted<br />

that some of the test methods are significantly<br />

different from previous versions. In particular the<br />

corner stability test contained within BS EN 1022<br />

is different from the previous test contained in<br />

BS EN 1335-3. Manufacturers and importers can<br />

therefore not be certain that a product that satisfied<br />

the previous version of EN 1335-2 will satisfy the<br />

requirements in the new standard.<br />

In addition the new version of EN 1335-3 contains<br />

a National Foreword that explains the UK’s<br />

dissatisfaction with the ‘Rolling Resistance’ test within<br />

the standard as it contains requirements unsuitable<br />

for the majority of the UK furniture market.<br />

BS EN 1022: <strong>2018</strong> Furniture - Seating - Determination<br />

of stability<br />

The standard came into effect as a British Standard<br />

on the 30th November <strong>2018</strong> and replaces the<br />

previous 2005 standard.<br />

This is a major update of the previous standard,<br />

which was specifically for domestic furniture. The<br />

new standard now covers all types of seating and<br />

incorporates test methods for office swivel chairs<br />

which were previously covered in other standards<br />

(BS EN 1335-3: 2009 Office furniture. Office work<br />

chair. Test methods and BS EN 581-2: 2015 Seating<br />

and tables for camping, domestic and contract use.<br />

Mechanical safety requirements and test methods for<br />

seating respectively).<br />

Non-domestic tables and desks / office desks<br />

ISO 9241-5:1998 Ergonomic requirements for office<br />

work with visual display terminals (VDTs) -- Part 5:<br />

Workstation layout and postural requirements<br />

Work has started on the revision to Part 5 of the<br />

series. In order to completely overhaul this standard<br />

to match the needs of today’s offices and work<br />

practices, a survey of “task based workstations” and<br />

the appropriated requirements for products in use at<br />

these workstations was devised.<br />

Revision to EN ISO 9241-6 Environmental factors<br />

of the VDT workplaces will follow once this work is<br />

complete.<br />

Key changes to note:<br />

• Introduction of a new test method assessing the<br />

corner stability of seating has been introduced;<br />

• Introduction of a new test method for seating with<br />

raised side edges that are not considered arms has<br />

been added;<br />

• A requirement that all swivel seating (including<br />

those intended for domestic use) require a rearwards<br />

stability test with 130 kg load – previously domestic<br />

seating only required 110 kg.<br />

It is expected that over the coming years other<br />

seating specification standards will be updated to<br />

include references to EN 1022: <strong>2018</strong>.<br />

Non-domestic / office storage<br />

ISO 7171 Furniture – Storage units - Determination of<br />

stability<br />

The document has been submitted for FDIS with<br />

main changes in relation to:<br />

Definitions and figures have been added; Table 1<br />

Loads for stability testing has been moved into the<br />

body of the standard (previously in an informative<br />

Annex); test descriptions have been clarified;<br />

revision to informative Annex A providing guidance<br />

on loads and forces for different applications and<br />

an informative Annex B on the purpose and the<br />

applicability (rationale) of test methods.<br />

surveyed 1000 18-34-year-olds to<br />

understand what they are really<br />

looking for in a hotel.<br />

The research revealed that an<br />

overwhelming 87% of respondents<br />

cited the interior design as important<br />

when booking a hotel, with 81%<br />

identifying a ‘cool bar’ as a critical<br />

could also be part of the solution<br />

for hoteliers wanting to build a loyal<br />

following amongst the millennial<br />

generation. As whilst 82% of<br />

millennials stating a preference for<br />

experiencing a new hotel each year,<br />

a significant 42% will return for an<br />

impressive design.<br />

Website performance was another key<br />

area of investment for hotels – more<br />

than half of millennials would be put<br />

off booking a hotel if the website was<br />

difficult to use, 49% would be put off<br />

if they couldn’t book instantly online.<br />
