Margaret Haynes, Founder of OFAS
As we start the New Year, we have some the very sad news. Our founder Margaret Haynes suddenly passed
away at the end of last year.
Margaret was a mentor and inspiration to me, providing guidance and aspiration for the role I perform today.
I hope to be able carry on Margaret’s work with the same passion, determination and enthusiasm that she
demonstrated tirelessly over the 25 years of running OFAS.
All the staff at OFAS offer their sincere condolences to Margaret’s family at this very difficult time. Her
children have kindly written a few words about their loving mother to share with you.
Margaret Haynes, the Founder of OFAS, has died aged 79. Margaret passed away at her home in Camberley, Surrey, on
Monday 17th December 2018. Although Margaret had experienced difficulties with her health in recent years, her death came
as an unexpected shock to her family, friends and everyone who knew and loved her.
Margaret founded OFAS in 1987 and was at the helm for 25 years. From humble beginnings, Margaret’s hard work and
boundless enthusiasm saw OFAS quickly develop into the primary source of impartial information and advice to the commercial
furniture industry. Under Margaret’s leadership, OFAS went on to launch a number of initiatives. She ran regular events:
seminars, product launches, industry parties (including an annual charity golf day) and training sessions. She oversaw the
publication of more than 60 editions of the OFAS Newsletter (which latterly became the OFAS Journal). Amongst it all, she
somehow found the time to launch Knowledge-Counsel, with its portfolio of independent consultants addressing the needs of
facilities managers. She reluctantly retired in 2012 aged 73.
Margaret’s knowledge, expertise, energy and enthusiasm garnered huge respect and admiration from the industry. She enjoyed
her work greatly and valued the many friends she made along the way.
Margaret was someone who lived life with gusto and she remained in very good spirits until the end, singing in her much-loved
Bracknell Choral Society, seeing her many valued friends and remaining a devoted Tottenham Hotspur fan; in fact she was at a
match just 48 hours before her death and she was delighted with Spurs’ injury-time winner! Above all, Margaret loved spending
time with her three children, Sara, Jo and John, and her five grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by them all.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed but will be published on the OFAS website and social media channels when they

Welcome to 2019 and to our new Journal format. We hope you had lovely festive break and wish you a
very prosperous New Year.
Firstly I would like to welcome 5 new Associates that joined us just before Christmas, Pledge Office Chairs, Enva,
Smaartbox Limited, Yo Yo Desk and Go Office, We very much look forward to working with you all.
Our industry has many challenges and opportunities, seasonality and key times, so we thought we would match
this with the quarterly journals each having a theme relevant to our market. The first one being Educational Space.
Historically, educational furniture was totally different from any other sector, unlike today, where there is a blurring
of edges with educational, office and hospitality interiors. Other than pre-school and primary school furniture
being suitably proportioned for our little ones, when you step into an academy or university, you could be in any
hotel foyer or corporate office. With the high regulations on fire retardancy, quality standards, environmental
accreditations and fit-for-purpose, furniture is designed to be versatile and suitable to be sold across multiple
sectors. Therefore, although themed Educational Space, we are sure you will find lots of interesting articles, case
studies and adverts whatever your industry sector.
Observant readers will probably notice that the OFAS logo has changed and that actually it now reads CFAS. We
have thought long and hard about this, acknowledging that OFAS has over 35 years in the industry. However
having the acronym “O” for office really doesn’t reflect who we are today as we support the hospitality,
educational, healthcare, contract and office furniture market. We have changed our name to CFAS, with the “C”
acronym derived from commercial. This change comes at a time when we are also instigating many improvements
and additional services for our members, providing industry information, practical advice, plus marketing
and promotional opportunities. The world is changing, the stresses and issues faced are different, market,
environmental, economic, social and technical pressures are growing, so here at CFAS we have taken on board a
Non-Executive Director to help us develop more tools and services to better support you.
Paula Marshall, our new Non-Executive Director, has been surveying members to understand their business
challenges or sales and marketing dilemmas, finding very similar problems being faced whether a manufacturer,
importer, reseller or dealer, whether selling a product or service. The changes over the next year reflects the ever
developing needs of our members …our website has become even more user-friendly, new services are coming
On-board, and we are planning networking events, plus many more activities.

Working with educational
establishments
The key to working with educational establishments is to work in partnership to develop
bespoke waste management and recycling services, with the aim of reducing waste levels
and increasing recycling at each campus and site.
Key to the success of the work with these clients is excellent relationships
and communication channels to ensure consistently high levels of service are
achieved and the waste on site is always moved in a timely and safe manner.
Engagement across all levels at each institution is an important driver in
achieving recycling targets. Using a combination of student roadshow events,
regular on-site auditing, case studies and social media posts is perfect to be
able to influence recycling attitudes and behaviours to facilitate success.
Through the use of innovative reporting systems, sites should be able to track
their spend, volumes and recycling rates to compare against performance
expectations. Using this information is especially useful to develop
infographics and other visuals that can be shared with the University’s staff
and students in an at-a-glace format to increase student recycling and
attitudes towards waste.

Latest standards updates – what
you need to know
The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) are ‘the centre of knowledge; for the
furniture industry. A key part of their role is keeping their members up-to-date on the latest
standards update.
Here they share an overview of some of the changes to office furniture standards which took place between
September 2018 and December 2018. Standards do of course always evolve, so details should be read in
conjunction with any subsequent updates.
New standards
BS EN 1335-2: 2018 Office furniture. Office Work
Chair. Safety Requirements
This 2018 version replaces the previous 2009 version
of the standard with immediate effect. The standard
has been revised to reference the most current test
method standards:
• BS EN 1022: 2018 Furniture. Seating.
Determination of strength and durability
• BS EN 1728: 2012 Furniture. Seating.
Determination of stability
The previous test method standard, BS EN 1335-
3: 2009 Office Furniture. Office Work Chair. Test
methods, has now been withdrawn.
Whilst the main purpose was to harmonise test
methods with the new standards, it should be noted
that some of the test methods are significantly
different from previous versions. In particular the
corner stability test contained within BS EN 1022
is different from the previous test contained in
BS EN 1335-3. Manufacturers and importers can
therefore not be certain that a product that satisfied
the previous version of EN 1335-2 will satisfy the
requirements in the new standard.
In addition the new version of EN 1335-3 contains
a National Foreword that explains the UK’s
dissatisfaction with the ‘Rolling Resistance’ test within
the standard as it contains requirements unsuitable
for the majority of the UK furniture market.

BS EN 1022: 2018 Furniture - Seating - Determination
of stability
The standard came into effect as a British Standard
on the 30th November 2018 and replaces the
previous 2005 standard.
This is a major update of the previous standard,
which was specifically for domestic furniture. The
new standard now covers all types of seating and
incorporates test methods for office swivel chairs
which were previously covered in other standards
(BS EN 1335-3: 2009 Office furniture. Office work
chair. Test methods and BS EN 581-2: 2015 Seating
and tables for camping, domestic and contract use.
Mechanical safety requirements and test methods for
seating respectively).
Non-domestic tables and desks / office desks
ISO 9241-5:1998 Ergonomic requirements for office
work with visual display terminals (VDTs) -- Part 5:
Workstation layout and postural requirements
Work has started on the revision to Part 5 of the
series. In order to completely overhaul this standard
to match the needs of today’s offices and work
practices, a survey of “task based workstations” and
the appropriated requirements for products in use at
these workstations was devised.
Revision to EN ISO 9241-6 Environmental factors
of the VDT workplaces will follow once this work is
complete.
Key changes to note:
• Introduction of a new test method assessing the
corner stability of seating has been introduced;
• Introduction of a new test method for seating with
raised side edges that are not considered arms has
been added;
• A requirement that all swivel seating (including
those intended for domestic use) require a rearwards
stability test with 130 kg load – previously domestic
seating only required 110 kg.
It is expected that over the coming years other
seating specification standards will be updated to
include references to EN 1022: 2018.
Non-domestic / office storage
ISO 7171 Furniture – Storage units - Determination of
stability
The document has been submitted for FDIS with
main changes in relation to:
Definitions and figures have been added; Table 1
Loads for stability testing has been moved into the
body of the standard (previously in an informative
Annex); test descriptions have been clarified;
revision to informative Annex A providing guidance
on loads and forces for different applications and
an informative Annex B on the purpose and the
applicability (rationale) of test methods.

Generation Experience:
New Research Suggests the
Design and Connectivity are key to
Attracting Millennial Hotel Guests
To understand how hoteliers can
win over the most competitive
demographic in the hospitality
sector – millennials – hotel furniture
manufacturers Knightsbridge Furniture
surveyed 1000 18-34-year-olds to
understand what they are really
looking for in a hotel.
The research revealed that an
overwhelming 87% of respondents
cited the interior design as important
when booking a hotel, with 81%
identifying a ‘cool bar’ as a critical
factor in their choice.
The research also highlighted
the power of social media as a
communication tool, with 76%
professing to have shared an image
of a hotel (including bar, pool,
restaurant, and bedroom) that they
have stayed in. Furthermore it is a
signifier of good taste, with 83%
stating that they booked a hotel
because they had seen images from
someone they follow on social media.
73% check the social media feed of
hotel before booking and 1 in 3 would
be put off booking altogether if a
hotel had no social media presence.
A well thought out design scheme
could also be part of the solution
for hoteliers wanting to build a loyal
following amongst the millennial
generation. As whilst 82% of
millennials stating a preference for
experiencing a new hotel each year,
a significant 42% will return for an
impressive design.
Website performance was another key
area of investment for hotels – more
than half of millennials would be put
off booking a hotel if the website was
difficult to use, 49% would be put off
if they couldn’t book instantly online.
