Here we are at the start of 2018 and what a better way to start, than to wish 

you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year!! We thank all of our members 

for their continued commitment and support. 

Now the festive break has come to an end (didn’t it go quickly!!) I can share our 

exciting plans for this year. 

During mid 2017, we launched a new educational section within our journal 

publications, which has become very popular with both members and our readers. 

This new section enables us to support our members, promoting both their products 

and key factors to the relevant educational bodies relating to schools, colleges, 

universities and other educational establishments throughout the UK. 

In addition to educational, our members have requested that we also embrace the 

hospitality sector. Within this journal you will find a small taster from Mark Holliday - 

Camira Fabrics and an article covering Hotel Olympia. Should you wish to place an 

article or promote a product in this section within our spring journal, we would be 

pleased to hear from you. 

Again for the 6th year running, we are very excited to be part of Clerkenwell Design 

Week. This is always a fantastic event and we look forward to featuring sections in 

our forthcoming publications, which we would encourage you to be part of. Publicise 

your showroom and increase genuine footfall! 

In April this year, OFAS is on the move. Our 6 year contract has come to an end and 

it is time to move on to pastures new. Details will be provided nearer the time.

quantity of toxic chemicals emitted when it burns, increasing risk of death after fire breaks out. 

The research assessed the flammability 

of furniture manufactured with and 

without chemical flame retardants. 

It discovered that chemicals, added 

during the manufacturing process in 

order to comply with strict UK fire safety 

regulations, cause smoke to become up 

to three times more poisonous. 

Inhalation of toxic gases in smoke is the 

primary cause of death from fire in the 

UK. Bromine, a chemical element often 

used in flame retardants by furniture 

manufacturers, increases the amount of 

the two key toxicants, carbon monoxide 

and hydrogen cyanide, when furniture 

burns. 

Researchers also discovered that flame 

retardants resulted in only a slight delay 

to the ignition of furniture, with UK 

standard furniture blazing within just five 

to eight minutes. 

Furniture made specifically to pass UK 

flammability tests using higher quality 

materials but without flame retardants 

took 15 to 20 minutes before the first 

flames appeared, noticeably longer than 

when using the chemical retardant. 

The study, published in Chemosphere 

was carried out by the world-leading 

fire chemistry and fire toxicity research 

team at The University of Central 

Lancashire (UCLan) in collaboration with 

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue 

Service, West Midlands Fire Service, and 

The University of Canterbury in New 

Zealand. 

Professor Richard Hull, lead researcher 

and Professor of Chemistry and Fire 

Science at UCLan, commented: 

“The gases produced when furniture 

containing flame retardants burn are 

highly toxic, yet there are currently 

no requirements to assess the toxicity 

of smoke from burning furniture. 

This means there is no incentive for 

manufacturers to limit the toxicity of the 

smoke from their furniture. 

“We have very strict flammability tests 

in the UK but these simply measure the 

ignitability. What this does is encourage 

manufacturers to produce furniture 

with large amounts of flame retardants 

as the cheapest way of passing the 

flammability test. This, ultimately, 

creates the opposite of the desired 

effect, and actually makes furniture 

deadlier in the case of a fire.” 

The study comes after a revised 

flammability test proposed by UK 

government, which would have 

reduced the amount of flame retardants 

necessary to pass the test, was 

postponed indefinitely. 

Hull continued: “We found limited fire 

safety benefits of adding chemical flame 

retardants to furniture, and the omission 

of a smoke toxicity test from furniture 

flammability regulations ignores the 

UK’s leading cause of death in fire. This 

research proves there is a safer option 

in terms of both the flammability and 

toxicity of furniture.” 

In 2014, UK government proposed 

a revised match test which would 

have improved the safety of domestic 

furniture and significantly reduced the 

amount of flame retardants necessary. 

This change has not been implemented, 

and there is no indication that it is likely 

to be in the near future, UCLan said. 

The Department for Business, Energy 

and Industrial Strategy consulted on 

the same proposed match test in 

September 2016, but is yet to provide 

answers to the responses given, it 

added. 

The match test exercised during the 

research was a version of the British 

Standard Crib 7 Test, using a 10cm 

by 10cm frame of wood to ignite the 

furniture.

SELECTING A SMART 

LOCKING SYSTEM 

NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY 

Founded in 1898, Northeastern is 

a distinguished private research 

university in Boston, Massachusetts. 

To provide shelter during the winter 

months, Northeastern’s underground 

tunnel system is a convenient way 

of traveling between the campus 

library, student center, and numerous 

buildings. Recently, the university 

finished redesigning the tunnel 

system, installing new flooring, 

improved lighting, colorful signage, 

as well as more than 1,200 student 

lockers. To securely manage such a 

large locker installation, the university 

opted for a smart locking system. 

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 

In the course of significant 

renovations to the university’s 

tunnel system, leadership sought an 

electronic locking system that would 

be easy-to-manage and eliminate the 

cost of resetting combination locks. 

To avoid a bottle neck scenario, 

where users are identified at a central 

terminal, Northeastern University 

required a de-centralized, integrated 

solution that allowed students to 

rent personal lockers on the myNEU 

student portal. Last, though not 

least, the system needed to meet 

budget and be easily installed during 

summer break.

STUDENT ID CARD APPLICATIONS 

The system is easy and intuitive to use thanks to 

acoustic feedback, LED lighting, and clear labeling 

– each locker has both a letter and number, 

denoting its exact location in the underground 

tunnel. For example, one locker is labeled «RI 

200», RI standing for Richards Hall, 200 standing 

for the locker number. 

University security is of great importance and the 

locking system improves the safety of belongings 

thanks to a customizable, networked alarm 

delivered to maintenance and security staff.

Strategy for handling sales inquiries 

How do school business managers and buyers distinguish between time-wasting sales calls 

and emails and those who have a genuine message that could benefit your school?

As someone who buys and sells, I 

understand the problems on both sides 

and after studying countless school 

invoice audits know exactly where a school 

can save money. However, only a small 

fraction of them respond to emails or 

phone calls. 

Here’ s one suggestion to avoid missing 

business opportunities while also reducing 

time-wasting sales calls and emails that 

promise to save you money. 

• Take the call from somebody you haven’t 

heard from before or state the following to 

an approach by email; 

• Ask them to email you with a very brief 

proposal of what you are offering with 

price examples; 

• Explain they have one opportunity to 

win over your interest; 

• Respond – essential, however brief. 

Then if they pass the above, you ought to 

discuss further. If not, no need to take the calls 

again. All salespeople with genuine products 

and services of interest will accept this. 

The biggest problem is that by not taking 

any calls or answering any emails all you 

do is create more. Most genuine salespeople 

will move on if you tell them you 

have considered the product or service 

and are not interested in discussing further. 

Every sales manager and sales director will 

tell their teams to be more persistent but 

will also tell them not to waste their time 

on lost causes. 

The use of MailChimp or similar systems 

means almost all emails are now considered 

as advertising but you should be able 

to distinguish between a personal email 

and this type of promotion. 

Those on LinkedIn regularly state 

examples of how they tried to ring 

somebody 55 times before they eventually 

got through and then picked up a huge 

order. To me, that says the buyer is at 

fault for not spotting an opportunity 

earlier. 

It frustrates me when we take the time to 

email to request they be taken off an email 

list but do not bother just saying ‘thanks 

but not interested or suitable’ to the first 

email they received. 

In my view, modern technology has 

created bad business etiquette and 

manners. Maybe this is also due to 

increasing workloads. My old-fashioned 

suggestion (and wish) is to give 

salespeople one opportunity to gain your 

interest – if they don’t take it then that’s 

their loss!

Rickerby 

Retreat 

returns after the flood 

A determined destination spa turned the tide of misfortune to reopen its doors in time for 

the 2017 festive season. 

The floods that devastated Carlisle and neighbouring parts in 2015 could have spelt the end for Rickerby Retreat Spa 

but they have transformed their prospects to return more committed than ever to deliver their vision of leisure luxury. 

The Retreat offers a full range of ESPA treatments and claims to be the only such spa in Carlisle offering the spectrum of 

these advanced methods. Opened on 5 December, complete with 15m x 7m pool, steam and sauna and four treatment 

rooms, Rickerby Retreat was dealt a body blow when floodwater swamped the site two years ago. 

Owners Dan and Rachel Ferguson dreamed of creating a year-round leisure destination for both overnight and day 

guests. Under the £1m project, Dan first sourced and contacted bespoke furniture manufacturers and installers Crown 

Sports Lockers at the end of 2014, inviting them to tender for the design and supply of changing and treatment room 

facilities for their new venture. Crown won the work after project manager Sam Palmer visited the site before submitting 

fit-out options and agreeing final designs with Dan. 

Like every Crown project, this was a made-to-measure undertaking 

designed to optimise space and match provision with Rickerby Retreat’s 

demographic. 

Working closely with Dan as their dedicated project manager, Sam 

partnered the spa throughout every stage of the project from first site 

meeting to sign-off. 

Crown fitted each of the four treatment rooms with a wall of built-in 

furniture, including Corian worktop and sink, concealed therapist trolley, 

towel storage and product display in each. The luxurious grey-decored 

male and female locker rooms included storage for clothes and valuables, 

with integrated seating, digital keypad locking, washroom cubicles and 

vanities - Crown also fitting lockers and seating in the staff room. 

Rachel was heavily involved throughout the entire project, co-ordinating finishes from the Farrow & Ball colour scheme, 

upholstery fabrics and treatment room designs. 

Then the floodwater struck a year later, forcing the business to close overnight and Dan and Rachel to return to square 

one but with unshaking resolve they have brought Rickerby Retreat back to life. 

It’s `once bitten, twice shy` for the owners though. “I decided to fit all services in the ceiling rather than at floor level,” 

reports Dan, “to reduce risk of them being affected if the site became flooded again.” A wise decision to shift thinking 

on such vital though vulnerable lifelines but his mindset on changing and treatment room provision remained steadfast, 

returning to Crown for an essentially `copycat` fit-out. 

“They did such a great job first time round that I turned to them again as a matter of course,” comments Dan.

The hospitality industry covers a wide variety of 

environments. Areas such as hotel, leisure, café, bar and 

restaurant are just a few and within these environments, 

guests should hope to be welcomed, to feel comfortable 

and to enjoy the experiences associated with hospitality. 

Let’s be honest, we all enjoy our home comforts, and that’s 

why when we go out for the evening or stay away, whether 

it’s for business or pleasure, we want to enjoy excellent 

food or drink and soak up a different atmosphere with 

appealing surroundings. For this reason, the hotel industry 

has a challenge to continually strive to ensure that we, the 

customer, enjoy every visit. 

The hotel industry, not just in the UK but globally, is at 

the forefront of hospitality. Warm welcoming receptions 

and that ‘first impression counts’ criteria, public spaces 

with beautiful comforting seating, relaxing bar and lounge 

areas, stylish conference or meeting room suites – and 

that’s before we enter into the bedrooms, where you 

will often find an inviting and beautifully dressed bed, 

coordinating side chairs, sofa-beds and inviting soft 

furnishings. 

Fabrics add flair and personality, performance and style 

to a wide range of hotel interiors. From the public space 

or meeting areas, you may find soft plush wool covered

fabric textures play an important part of our everyday life, 

wear and tear can look uninviting, therefore thoughts must 

go not just to the colour, the design or the look but to 

the robustness of the interior because the most important 

thing to remember in hospitality is that ‘first impressions 

count’.
