Welcome to the OFAS Winter Journal 

It’s 2017! And I would like to wish you all a very Happy and prosperous New Year. Thank 

you to all our existing members for your continued support, each of you are very much 

valued by the OFAS team. We are looking forward to working with you again this year. 

As many of you know, I sadly lost my father before Christmas. He had been suffering from 

terminal cancer for the past 2 and half years. This issue of the OFAS Journal I would very 

much like to dedicate to my father ‘Patrick Boyle’. When I was going through the process 

of purchasing OFAS, my father was a great inspiration to me, supporting and assisting me 

in many different aspects. It was very reassuring to have his backing. Since then, behind 

the scenes he continued to provide support and advice on the running of the company; 

this I will never forget. Thank you Dad. 

This is a huge year and milestone for OFAS, where we are very proud to be celebrating 

our 30th anniversary. During the year, we will be publishing some of the original OFAS 

newsletters that were circulated from 1996. You will see some very familiar names 

together with some that unfortunately are no longer with us. In this year’s editions, it 

would be wonderful to place some articles from members, outlining their experiences 

over the past 20 to 30 years, giving those newer companies a taste of the ‘old times’. 

I would also like to thank and recognise the founder of OFAS, Margaret Haynes for 

achieving a fantastic goal in launching the company so many years ago. I realise that a 

great deal of blood, sweat and tears must have been carried out by Margaret to compile 

the colossal directories and databases we have today. All of this was carried out in times 

when we didn’t have pc’s, relying on vast amounts of work researching products within 

hard copy brochures. Luckily now, we have the luxury of the pc with huge amounts of 

storage, which makes life a lot easier, until you get a blue screen! I hope Margaret may be 

able to provide a synopsis in one of our upcoming issues. 

This year, OFAS will again be involved with Clerkenwell Design week. It will be the fifth 

year of us supporting the event. Each year it proves to be very beneficial and is classed 

as an important industry gathering, providing many opportunities to network and gain 

vital knowledge of the current happenings within the industry. It also provides OFAS the 

opportunity to catch up with our members and those that would like to consider being 

part of the hub of the industry. We look forward to seeing you there!

Editorial 

Did you know that the upholstery fabrics we see and 

use in everyday office life have a purpose, not just for 

being colourful and attractive, but more importantly 

they need to perform and if maintained correctly, will 

last a long time? 

When fabrics are being designed, 

developed and manufactured, it is very 

important to follow a procedure, ensuring 

that whether they are produced using 

wool, polyester, nylon or any other fibres 

or mixes, that they meet the correct 

industry standards, for key areas such as 

abrasion, fire retardancy, light fastness 

and general strength, giving then expected 

durability. 

Abrasion is a key indicator for how a 

fabric will perform and this is measured 

by the Martindale Test, where the 

intended fabric is ‘rubbed’ against an 

industry identified worsted wool. One 

circular motion cycle on the machine (see 

image) indicates one rub and the British 

Standard sets the minimum at 40,000 

rubs for general contract environments. 

Fire Retardancy is measured for the 

environments that the seating units are 

intended. For general offices, schools 

and similar areas the standard of Low 

Hazard BS 7176 Cigarette and Match 

FR is the criteria to be met, however for 

more public areas where high volumes of 

traffic, offering a greater fire risk, such as 

restaurants, bars, hotels, hospitals and 

equivalent areas the standard known as 

Medium Hazard BS 7176 Crib 5 is the 

minimum requirement.

With every effort being made to ensure that the fabrics meet the standards, it is 

also the overall care and maintenance however that plays a major part in their life 

expectancy. Regular vacuuming of the seating is a must, to remove any day to day dust, 

dirt and soiling that can overtime become embedded into the fabric construction, thus 

resulting in degradation not just from a visual aspect but from a quality point of view. 

Post treatments to aid against spillages and heavy soiling can and are easily applied 

to most fabrics with resounding success, however simply mopping up any spillages 

promptly and regular vacuuming is the answer. After all, we clean and vacuum our 

carpets at home regularly to keep their appeal, why shouldn’t we do the same with the 

upholstery!

Fastness to light is an important criteria, 

where fabrics are exposed to excess 

daylight and subsequently fading could 

be caused. This is measured by exposure 

of the fabric to a Zenon lamp. 

The fabric is then assessed for fading using 

blue scales and is then graded between 0 

and 8, with a resultant grade between 5 

and 8 being the expected level that is 

deemed acceptable.

Specifications Guide 

The latest version of FIRA's guide to specifying furniture is now available. This 

guide, which is free to members of The Association, will assist specifiers in the tender 

process when acquiring contract or domestic furniture. It also acts as a guide for 

manufacturers and suppliers looking to satisfy a specifier’s requirements. 

Furniture is a deceptively complex product to purchase. There are many factors that 

need to be considered when specifying furniture; from the suitability of the supplier 

to the performance of the product. Some of these factors include the consideration of 

ergonomics, fire safety, frequency and length of product use, product whole life cost, 

use of the product and sustainable manufacturing. 

To ensure that products are suitable for the intended use, it is important that 

the correct factors are considered at the tendering stage, and that appropriate 

specifications are transmitted to potential suppliers. 

This guide is intended to provide comprehensive and current information for the 

specifiers of contract and non-domestic furniture for use in producing a tender 

document. 

The guide will assist in a number of ways, including the following: 

• Giving persons new to the tendering process reliable guidance 

• Making the process of producing a tender document as simple as possible for 

seasoned specifiers and tenderers 

• Assisting in the evaluation process by providing up to date and current advice 

• Offering a consistent approach, simplifying the process for the complete supply 

chain and thereby reducing the amount of cost and questions generated 

• Reducing the cost of the tender process for all parties 

• Reducing the amount of challenges on completion of the tender by ensuring 

consistency across specifiers and suppliers alike.

Sit-stand Furniture

In Sweden sit-stand desks are now 

fully integrated into the workplace 

and office furniture - whilst Denmark 

has recently brought out new laws 

to make it compulsory for employers 

to offer employees the option of a sit/ 

stand. Back here in the UK we are 

beginning to adopt and adapt to the 

idea of sit-stand desks & hot-desking; 

yet we are still somewhat lagging 

behind as many employers seem to 

observe the installation of sit-stand 

desks as an unnecessary cost rather 

than an investment into the long term 

health of staff. 

The Finance Manager for the global 

healthcare company Arthrex Sweden 

comments, “I would not dream of not 

having a sit/stand desk. Employees in 

Sweden have had them for decades 

even all the hot desks are sit/stand. 

The fact that you feel so much more 

energised and alert when you switch 

from sitting and standing throughout 

the day especially is a huge advantage 

for office workers such as myself, as 

my role dictates that I am at a desk 

constantly working with numbers.” 

The NHS has found that there 

is increasing evidence that links 

excessive sitting with being obese, 

type 2 diabetes some types of cancer 

and even premature death. Research 

also carried out by the British Heart 

Foundation and Get Britain Standing 

found that workers sitting for long 

periods at their desk could have 

a serious impact on their health. 

According to statistics carried out in 

the UK, the survey found that almost 

half of the women (45%) and almost 

two fifths of men (37%) working in the 

UK offices spend less than 30 minutes 

a day walking around at work. In fact 

further research has found that moving 

from a sitting to standing position 

helps the user feel more energised, 

aiding better concentration, increased 

productivity, reduced back problems 

and can help burn up to three times 

more calories! 

Introducing sit-stand desks into the 

workplace can also prompt employees 

to think about the current layout and 

even create or introduce other areas 

such as a breakout space, an informal 

space for individuals to have quiet 

thinking time or a space for small 

groups to informally meet and discuss 

ideas. 

A common misconception of standing 

desks is that users are required to 

stand all day. In fact standing all day 

can be bad for health as is sitting down 

throughout the day. Users of sit-stand 

desks should regularly alternate 

sitting down and standing up, the aim 

is to keep mobile and avoid remaining 

in the same position for a long period 

of time. Experts suggest sitting for no 

more than 20 minutes at a time and 

stand in one position for no more than 

8 minutes at a time as well as keeping 

mobile & taking short walks around 

the office throughout the day. 

Sit-stand desks can help boost 

productivity & motivation, by 

standing up office workers feel more 

alert and more focused on tasks they 

are working on. These desks can also 

help improve posture as users are not 

hunched over a desk and is also a good 

opportunity to stretch muscles and 

joints thus improving circulation as 

well as the added benefits of burning 

more calories than sitting down. It is 

also believed to help increase energy 

levels by keeping users alert and 

active. So the BIG question is, why 

are some companies still reluctant to 

invest in sit/stand?

that I think this is changing now. We 

have seen a massive rise in sit/stand

within a floorbox or a perimeter 

trunking system. installations

connectors or hard wiring should 

be installed in accordance with 

BS7671 - Requirements for Electrical 

installations. 

To meet the requirements of BS6396 

the points listed below must be 

followed when specifying electrical 

systems within office or educational 

furniture. 

Any electrical system being fed from 

one 13 Amp UK plug must not consist 

of more than; 

• Six sockets if individually fused 

at 3.15 Amps each 

• Four sockets if individually fused 

at 5 Amps each 

These restrictions are to ensure that 

no equipment rated higher than 

5 Amps can be plugged into the 

electrical system, minimising the 

risk of overloads or excessive earth 

leakage currents back to the supply. 

Even if surge protectors, RCBOs etc. 

are fitted you still need to individually 

fuse each socket at 3.15 Amps or 5 

Amps. 

However, sometimes the provision 

for higher rated office equipment is 

necessary. If equipment such as laser 

printers require a supply greater 

than 5 Amps they must be connected 

directly to their own 13A supply 

socket.
