Welcome to the OFAS <strong>Winter</strong> Journal<br />

It’s 2017! And I would like to wish you all a very Happy and prosperous New Year. Thank<br />

you to all our existing members for your continued support, each of you are very much<br />

valued by the OFAS team. We are looking forward to working with you again this year.<br />

As many of you know, I sadly lost my father before Christmas. He had been suffering from<br />

terminal cancer for the past 2 and half years. This issue of the OFAS Journal I would very<br />

much like to dedicate to my father ‘Patrick Boyle’. When I was going through the process<br />

of purchasing OFAS, my father was a great inspiration to me, supporting and assisting me<br />

in many different aspects. It was very reassuring to have his backing. Since then, behind<br />

the scenes he continued to provide support and advice on the running of the company;<br />

this I will never forget. Thank you Dad.<br />

This is a huge year and milestone for OFAS, where we are very proud to be celebrating<br />

our 30th anniversary. During the year, we will be publishing some of the original OFAS<br />

newsletters that were circulated from 1996. You will see some very familiar names<br />

together with some that unfortunately are no longer with us. In this year’s editions, it<br />

would be wonderful to place some articles from members, outlining their experiences<br />

over the past 20 to 30 years, giving those newer companies a taste of the ‘old times’.<br />

I would also like to thank and recognise the founder of OFAS, Margaret Haynes for<br />

achieving a fantastic goal in launching the company so many years ago. I realise that a<br />

great deal of blood, sweat and tears must have been carried out by Margaret to compile<br />

the colossal directories and databases we have today. All of this was carried out in times<br />

when we didn’t have pc’s, relying on vast amounts of work researching products within<br />

hard copy brochures. Luckily now, we have the luxury of the pc with huge amounts of<br />

storage, which makes life a lot easier, until you get a blue screen! I hope Margaret may be<br />

able to provide a synopsis in one of our upcoming issues.<br />

This year, OFAS will again be involved with Clerkenwell Design week. It will be the fifth<br />

year of us supporting the event. Each year it proves to be very beneficial and is classed<br />

as an important industry gathering, providing many opportunities to network and gain<br />

vital knowledge of the current happenings within the industry. It also provides OFAS the<br />

opportunity to catch up with our members and those that would like to consider being<br />

part of the hub of the industry. We look forward to seeing you there!<br />

Did you know that the upholstery fabrics we see and<br />

use in everyday office life have a purpose, not just for<br />

being colourful and attractive, but more importantly<br />

they need to perform and if maintained correctly, will<br />

last a long time?<br />

When fabrics are being designed,<br />

developed and manufactured, it is very<br />

important to follow a procedure, ensuring<br />

that whether they are produced using<br />

wool, polyester, nylon or any other fibres<br />

or mixes, that they meet the correct<br />

industry standards, for key areas such as<br />

abrasion, fire retardancy, light fastness<br />

and general strength, giving then expected<br />

durability.<br />

Abrasion is a key indicator for how a<br />

fabric will perform and this is measured<br />

by the Martindale Test, where the<br />

intended fabric is ‘rubbed’ against an<br />

industry identified worsted wool. One<br />

circular motion cycle on the machine (see<br />

image) indicates one rub and the British<br />

Standard sets the minimum at 40,000<br />

rubs for general contract environments.<br />

Fire Retardancy is measured for the<br />

environments that the seating units are<br />

intended. For general offices, schools<br />

and similar areas the standard of Low<br />

Hazard BS 7176 Cigarette and Match<br />

FR is the criteria to be met, however for<br />

more public areas where high volumes of<br />

traffic, offering a greater fire risk, such as<br />

restaurants, bars, hotels, hospitals and<br />

equivalent areas the standard known as<br />

Medium Hazard BS 7176 Crib 5 is the<br />

minimum requirement.<br />

With every effort being made to ensure that the fabrics meet the standards, it is<br />

also the overall care and maintenance however that plays a major part in their life<br />

expectancy. Regular vacuuming of the seating is a must, to remove any day to day dust,<br />

dirt and soiling that can overtime become embedded into the fabric construction, thus<br />

resulting in degradation not just from a visual aspect but from a quality point of view.<br />

Post treatments to aid against spillages and heavy soiling can and are easily applied<br />

to most fabrics with resounding success, however simply mopping up any spillages<br />

promptly and regular vacuuming is the answer. After all, we clean and vacuum our<br />

carpets at home regularly to keep their appeal, why shouldn’t we do the same with the<br />

upholstery!<br />

Fastness to light is an important criteria,<br />

where fabrics are exposed to excess<br />

daylight and subsequently fading could<br />

be caused. This is measured by exposure<br />

of the fabric to a Zenon lamp.<br />

The fabric is then assessed for fading using<br />

blue scales and is then graded between 0<br />

and 8, with a resultant grade between 5<br />

and 8 being the expected level that is<br />

deemed acceptable.<br />

Specifications Guide<br />

The latest version of FIRA's guide to specifying furniture is now available. This<br />

guide, which is free to members of The Association, will assist specifiers in the tender<br />

process when acquiring contract or domestic furniture. It also acts as a guide for<br />

manufacturers and suppliers looking to satisfy a specifier’s requirements.<br />

Furniture is a deceptively complex product to purchase. There are many factors that<br />

need to be considered when specifying furniture; from the suitability of the supplier<br />

to the performance of the product. Some of these factors include the consideration of<br />

ergonomics, fire safety, frequency and length of product use, product whole life cost,<br />

use of the product and sustainable manufacturing.<br />

To ensure that products are suitable for the intended use, it is important that<br />

the correct factors are considered at the tendering stage, and that appropriate<br />

specifications are transmitted to potential suppliers.<br />

This guide is intended to provide comprehensive and current information for the<br />

specifiers of contract and non-domestic furniture for use in producing a tender<br />

document.<br />

The guide will assist in a number of ways, including the following:<br />

• Giving persons new to the tendering process reliable guidance<br />

• Making the process of producing a tender document as simple as possible for<br />

seasoned specifiers and tenderers<br />

• Assisting in the evaluation process by providing up to date and current advice<br />

• Offering a consistent approach, simplifying the process for the complete supply<br />

chain and thereby reducing the amount of cost and questions generated<br />

• Reducing the cost of the tender process for all parties<br />

• Reducing the amount of challenges on completion of the tender by ensuring<br />

consistency across specifiers and suppliers alike.<br />

Sit-stand Furniture<br />

In Sweden sit-stand desks are now<br />

fully integrated into the workplace<br />

and office furniture - whilst Denmark<br />

has recently brought out new laws<br />

to make it compulsory for employers<br />

to offer employees the option of a sit/<br />

stand. Back here in the UK we are<br />

beginning to adopt and adapt to the<br />

idea of sit-stand desks & hot-desking;<br />

yet we are still somewhat lagging<br />

behind as many employers seem to<br />

observe the installation of sit-stand<br />

desks as an unnecessary cost rather<br />

than an investment into the long term<br />

health of staff.<br />

The Finance Manager for the global<br />

healthcare company Arthrex Sweden<br />

comments, “I would not dream of not<br />

having a sit/stand desk. Employees in<br />

Sweden have had them for decades<br />

even all the hot desks are sit/stand.<br />

The fact that you feel so much more<br />

energised and alert when you switch<br />

from sitting and standing throughout<br />

the day especially is a huge advantage<br />

for office workers such as myself, as<br />

my role dictates that I am at a desk<br />

constantly working with numbers.”<br />

The NHS has found that there<br />

is increasing evidence that links<br />

excessive sitting with being obese,<br />

type 2 diabetes some types of cancer<br />

and even premature death. Research<br />

also carried out by the British Heart<br />

Foundation and Get Britain Standing<br />

found that workers sitting for long<br />

periods at their desk could have<br />

a serious impact on their health.<br />

According to statistics carried out in<br />

the UK, the survey found that almost<br />

half of the women (45%) and almost<br />

two fifths of men (37%) working in the<br />

UK offices spend less than 30 minutes<br />

a day walking around at work. In fact<br />

further research has found that moving<br />

from a sitting to standing position<br />

helps the user feel more energised,<br />

aiding better concentration, increased<br />

productivity, reduced back problems<br />

and can help burn up to three times<br />

more calories!<br />

Introducing sit-stand desks into the<br />

workplace can also prompt employees<br />

to think about the current layout and<br />

even create or introduce other areas<br />

such as a breakout space, an informal<br />

space for individuals to have quiet<br />

thinking time or a space for small<br />

groups to informally meet and discuss<br />

ideas.<br />

A common misconception of standing<br />

desks is that users are required to<br />

stand all day. In fact standing all day<br />

can be bad for health as is sitting down<br />

throughout the day. Users of sit-stand<br />

desks should regularly alternate<br />

sitting down and standing up, the aim<br />

is to keep mobile and avoid remaining<br />

in the same position for a long period<br />

of time. Experts suggest sitting for no<br />

more than 20 minutes at a time and<br />

stand in one position for no more than<br />

8 minutes at a time as well as keeping<br />

mobile & taking short walks around<br />

the office throughout the day.<br />

Sit-stand desks can help boost<br />

productivity & motivation, by<br />

standing up office workers feel more<br />

alert and more focused on tasks they<br />

are working on. These desks can also<br />

help improve posture as users are not<br />

hunched over a desk and is also a good<br />

opportunity to stretch muscles and<br />

joints thus improving circulation as<br />

well as the added benefits of burning<br />

more calories than sitting down. It is<br />

also believed to help increase energy<br />

levels by keeping users alert and<br />

active. So the BIG question is, why<br />

are some companies still reluctant to<br />

invest in sit/stand?<br />

alternatives and getting the ergonomic<br />

solutions for the employees who have<br />

severe problems already with the<br />

posture, back problems etc. Saying<br />

that I think this is changing now. We<br />

have seen a massive rise in sit/stand<br />

desking enquiries in the last year.<br />

Since we launched, our affordable<br />

tripled. We have made it possible for<br />

companies, big or small, to be able to<br />

afford and offer sit/stands to all their<br />

employees which is a big step in the<br />

BS6396 applies to electrical<br />

installations in office and educational<br />

furniture connected to the supply by<br />

a 13A plug.<br />

Most commonly this is via an outlet<br />

within a floorbox or a perimeter<br />

trunking system. installations<br />

connected by other means such as<br />

underfloor track tap-offs, Industrial<br />

connectors or hard wiring should<br />

be installed in accordance with<br />

BS7671 - Requirements for Electrical<br />

installations.<br />

To meet the requirements of BS6396<br />

the points listed below must be<br />

followed when specifying electrical<br />

systems within office or educational<br />

furniture.<br />

Any electrical system being fed from<br />

one 13 Amp UK plug must not consist<br />

of more than;<br />

• Six sockets if individually fused<br />

at 3.15 Amps each<br />

• Four sockets if individually fused<br />

at 5 Amps each<br />

These restrictions are to ensure that<br />

no equipment rated higher than<br />

5 Amps can be plugged into the<br />

electrical system, minimising the<br />

risk of overloads or excessive earth<br />

leakage currents back to the supply.<br />

Even if surge protectors, RCBOs etc.<br />

are fitted you still need to individually<br />

fuse each socket at 3.15 Amps or 5<br />

Amps.<br />

However, sometimes the provision<br />

for higher rated office equipment is<br />

necessary. If equipment such as laser<br />

printers require a supply greater<br />
