Welcome to the OFAS summer 2016 Journal. 

It is a pleasure to include sections on post Clerkenwell Design Week, 100% 

Design and the ever popular sit-stand. Don’t miss the company news and 

product news sections, where you can keep abreast of the latest releases 

and updates. 

Clerkenwell Design Week this year proved again to be extremely successful 

and provided many opportunities to network with like minded folk. As you 

are probably aware, we were kindly allowed to base ourselves at The Gallery 

during the event, which is one of the many great hubs to attend (not to 

mention it being opposite a nice pub for lunch and impromptu meetings!). 

We would like to thank each company at The Gallery for their hospitality 

with a special thank you going to Natasha Pendlebury, Kalina Kalarus and 

the wonderful Julie Carolan. Thank you! 

During the event we were welcomed to many showrooms where it was very 

inspiring to see so many new products and designs. Some of the showrooms

100% Design, the UK's largest design trade show, returns to Olympia London 21-24 September. 

The show forms the commercial heart of London Design Festival, presenting leading national and 

international exhibitors with ideas, products and innovations for the domestic, workplace and built 

environments, alongside a special focus on emerging brands. 

Attracting over 26,000 professional visitors with a spending power exceeding £3.4 billion, this year 

sees the staging of the 22nd edition of London’s iconic design show. 

Reflecting 100% Design’s focus on quality and inspiration, this year’s theme is ‘Experience’, 

which will be explored across the show through specially commissioned installations, immersive 

experiences and sensory experiments. Visitors can physically engage with the latest product 

innovations, establish new business relationships and network with design professionals. 

Talks with 100% Design will be curated by the Design Museum as part of their ‘on loan’ campaign 

with activity out and about in Kensington until the museum opens there on 24 November 2016. The 

programme will be presented in a specially-commissioned auditorium, designed by Miska Miller- 

Lovegrove. A separate talks programme focussing on professional development will be presented 

in the Forum. 

100% Design’s Workplace section is the only of its kind in the UK. Reflecting the growing 

appreciation for workplace design worldwide, the section presents the ways in which the world’s 

most innovative companies are using design thinking to improve the experience and productivity 

of the workplace. The best in commercial design, with seating, desking, electronic innovations, 

acoustic panels, storage systems, lighting and flooring all represented. 

New exhibitors for 2016 include commercial furniture brand Arper, who will host the 100% Design

Chicago – 2016 

Chicago turned on the style for Neocon last 

week. The fabulous weather, hot and sunny, 

helped of course, but the US office furniture 

market has been buoyant and spirits were 

generally high. 

The city was buzzing and everything, except for the almost gridlocked traffic, 

seemed to be moving at double pace. The bars, clubs and restaurants was 

packed with both locals and conventioneers, whose proprietors were making 

hay while the sun shone. Delegates looking to stretch their dollars could enjoy 

the free, three-day, Chicago Blues Fest on five stages in nearby Grant Park. 

The show opened on Monday. Well it didn’t really, because Sunday, with the 

Merchandise Mart fully open for business, is actively used by most of the 

participating companies for dealer and VIP presentations, product training, staff 

briefings and fine tuning the displays 

and the presentations. But the Monday 

of Neocon is a one-off. Always the 

show’s busiest day, this year, the 

aisles, elevators and showrooms 

were heaving. It seemed there were 

many more visitors than in 2015 and 

at times, it was almost impossible to 

move around freely or to see any of 

the products properly. 

Most visitors were exhausted by about 

4pm when the showroom parties 

kicked off, and if you tried to attend 

them all, you’d only have time to spend 

a few minutes at each. It does seem a 

pity that they are almost all held at the 

same time rather than being spread 

out. Why not use Sunday evening 

or hold a breakfast event early on 

Monday or Tuesday? Exhibitors would 

probably get much better value for the 

dollars they spend. 

There were some big changes in the 

Mart this year. The owners, Vornado, 

have spent a reputed $40m renovating

the building including creating new 

features such as a 50-foot-wide marble 

staircase and a much improved food 

court. 

More pertinent for Neocon was the 

containment of the general exhibition 

area to the 7th floor alone, and the 

closing of the 8th. This allowed the 

show organisers to be very picky 

about which companies participated, 

and that, in turn, raised the standard of 

exhibitors, many of which were drawn 

from smaller, newer and creative 

companies from North America and 

Europe. A great improvement. 

Neocon’ visitor profile seems to shift 

each year. The overwhelming majority 

of the 60,000 or so attendees are 

always relatively local but those from 

further afield this year came mainly 

from Central America, especially 

Mexico with fewer than previously 

from Europe and Asia. 

There was also less in the way 

of frivolities and giveaways as if 

companies had decided to concentrate 

efforts on exploiting the hard selling 

opportunities presented by a strong 

market. 

Directions 

There was a dearth of genuine, 

cutting-edge, innovation this year. 

Talk was of ‘refinements’ and ‘range 

extensions’. With Haworth’s new 

Fern chair reputedly five years in the 

creation, it’s not surprising that not 

every annual Neocon presents ground 

breaking products. Sit-stand tables 

were everywhere although with little 

apparent effort being made either to 

integrate them with their fixed-height 

siblings or to promulgate any healthrelated 

arguments. There was more 

breakout furniture and individual and 

group enclosures on show this year, 

but nowhere near to the extent as 

might have been predicted by recent 

European trends. Work surface tops 

were showing some style with less 

of the solid, plain flat surfaces and 

more waterfall fronts and natural and 

quasi-natural textures. Felt, and plain, 

primary colours seem to have been 

replaced by imaginative and often 

beautifully patterned textiles with a 

rich hue of colours, some of which 

were exclusive to one or other of the 

larger companies. 

This year, furniture colours were darker 

with black – notably from Vitra - beginning 

to replace white and the wood 

finishes, beginning to be seen in 2015, 

were moving from light-coloured oak, 

ash and beech to walnut. 

The flags outside the Mart, and indeed 

everywhere across the city, were 

at half-mast for the victims of the Orlando 

killings and cast a more sombre 

shadow over an otherwise happy and 

successful show.

design festival. 

The seventh edition of Clerkenwell 

Design Week (CDW) delivered huge 

benefit to London’s key design cluster 

with over 41,000 new business leads 

generated directly at the three-day show. 

With over 90 local showrooms, and 

more than 300 exhibiting brands, CDW 

brought London’s most idiosyncratic and 

creative quarters alive from 24 – 26 May. 

Visitors came from over 70 countries,

mixing with exhibitors drawn from 

more than 20 countries, CDW used its 

transitional year to build on its position 

on the international design calendar. 

Sponsored by Renault for the second 

year, 65% of the visitors to CDW were 

architects or designers, confirming 

the importance of CDW for London’s 

creative sector and delivered through a 

unique format, including eight exhibition 

venues, over 150 local businesses 

and a series of original site-specific 

installations, with over 400 events. 

New for 2016 was the comprehensive recalibration 

of the show, which stretched 

across Clerkenwell, master planned by 

local architecture practice OMMX. This 

provided a fresh outlook on both the 

area and the experience of visiting a 

business-focussed design event. Eyecatching 

way-finding guided visitors 

between festival locations as they 

explored the new parts of Clerkenwell, 

to hunt out the latest in design. Along 

with the geographic expansion of the 

exhibitions, a gateway destination to 

Clerkenwell’s showrooms was added at 

Brewhouse Yard and The Goldsmiths’ 

Centre took centre stage as the show’s 

Live Events Hub. 

The Conversations at Clerkenwell 

series of talks and panel discussions, 

sponsored by 250 City Road, included 

a host of design thinkers and influencers 

and was headlined by a specially 

devised salon series curated by Ineke 

Hans, Daniel Libeskind in conversation 

with Patricia Moroso and Tom Dixon on 

his CDW installation, The Church. The 

live events programme complimented a 

series of high profile product launches

The Furniture Industry 

Sustainability Programme, 

more popularly recognised 

under the acronym FISP, go from 

strength to strength. 

The initial aim of FISP was to provide an 

auditable framework that would support 

and encourage the implementation 

of sustainability initiatives within the 

UK furniture industry. Designed to 

be accessible to companies of all 

types and sizes, and with almost 

90 scheme members, it is now the 

sector’s recognised route for continuous 

improvement of its sustainability 

credentials. 

The credibility of FISP has been further 

enhanced through its recognition by the 

SKA Technical Committee, leading to its 

addition to the SKA Rating criteria listing 

in 2015. 

‘SKA Rating’ is an environmental 

assessment method, benchmark and 

standard for non-domestic construction 

fit-outs including retail, food and office 

premises. It enables landlords and 

tenants to assess the environmental 

performance of fit-out projects against 

numerous sustainability criteria 

covering energy, waste, materials, CO2 

emissions, pollution, water, wellbeing 

and transportation. 

Attaining FISP membership is not easy. 

It requires an organisation to commit to 

a number of key elements including, but 

not limited to: 

• documented systems and processes 

demonstrating commitment 

towards managing and reducing 

environmental impacts 

• compliance with health, safety and 

environmental legislation 

• mitigation of significant 

environmental impacts such as 

waste, energy, transport and noise 

• corporate social responsibility 

(CSR) initiatives such as nuisance 

management, community relations, 

education, training, ethical issues, 

employment and competitiveness

In today’s economic climate, many companies are opting to up-cycle their existing furniture. 

Many contracts have been won by Over2Hills resulting in the resizing of desks for 

various companies. It has become quite apparent that it makes sense to re-size and upcycle
