Welcome to the OFAS Spring Journal
Welcome to this special 30th anniversary journal edition, where we continue
to celebrate the companies’ significant 30 year milestone. As part of the
continued enhancements to OFAS and the services we provide, rebranding
was a key element that we wanted to address. We hope you agree that the
new colour scheme is stylish, modern and inviting.
Within this edition, you will find a copy of the first OFAS newsletter that was
published in 1996. This first edition provides some interesting reading. Maybe
you will recognise some of the companies that are no longer with us or one
of the products that were released in 1996! It is also a reminder to us, how far
OFAS has progressed since that first release. We are very proud!
Clerkenwell Design Week 2017 is nearly upon us, where again we have the
pleasure of being media partners. This year we have been welcomed into the
Dauphin Human Design showroom in the heart of Clerkenwell. Come and
visit where you can explore the range of Dauphin Human Design products.
OFAS publications will be made available to all visitors and it would be
wonderful to catch up with existing members and those that would like to
find out a little more about OFAS.
I would also like to bring to your attention, that we will be producing a
GAP publication which is being published the week before CDW17. This is
the perfect timing for you to promote and attract greater footfall to your
showrooms or if you are not exhibiting, promote your products to an
additional vast audience. Entries in this publication will be promoted during
the event via the OFAS LinkedIn and Twitter feeds. Copies of the Gap will also
be available via the CDW press room.

stuff they would otherwise have to lug
around with them through the day.
Some schools and academies enforce
rigid codes of behaviour about how
pupils manage their lockers, others
are more relaxed in their approach.
“Pupils are pretty well-behaved
generally,” says Adrian Charlesworth,
Estates Officer at Nottingham High
School. “Major issues with vandalism
for example are very rare indeed.”
With 1,000 pupils aged 5 to 18, this
private school has a large locker
requirement across three floors -
especially so in the last few years,
Adrian explains: “We became coeducational
in 2015 and have been
refurbishing all the corridors with
new carpeting, doors and suspended
ceilings. Pupil lockers are all fitted in
the corridors so it’s important they
look the part.”
The school allocates year 7 and above
their own locker, large enough to
store books, bags, “sandwiches and
drinks”. “The lads’ main priority is
they are big enough to hold a football
and boots,” quips Adrian, “which they
are, measuring 300mm x 400mm and
500mm deep.”
Gone are the days of the old
freestanding steel lockers that the
school’s maintenance team had to rivet
to the walls themselves. “We choose
light oak wooden ones now, most
with shelving. Our supplier installs
them to our specification - complete
with skirting and end panels - which
requires that there are no voids for
crisp packets and drinks cans to
fall into. The inclined top panels are
inscribed into the corridor wall to
ensure pupils cannot stack stuff on
top of the lockers,” Adrian explains.
At the end of the summer term, pupils
have to clear their lockers and remove
their padlocks, regardless of whether
they will be using them in the next
school year. “We need to do that so
that the caretakers can check them
for any damage,” Adrian adds. “Any
padlocks still in place are chopped
off and the contents sent to lost
property.”
After several summers refurbishing
and refitting its corridors, Nottingham
High School has transformed its
interiors, a key factor in portraying
a quality image for present and
prospective parents.
Adrian’s top tip:
“Ensure you choose a supplier,
whose install team can run the
project smoothly, efficiently and
with minimum disruption. The one
that’s fitted all our lockers in the
last few years have been exceptional.
Contractors come and go here daily so
you soon gauge those who know what
they’re doing.”

Choose a Sit/Stand –
It’s a No-Brainer!

Sit/stand desks have been finding
their way into an increasing amount
of offices in recent years; however,
they still don’t have the presence they
should. What is discouraging many
employers is the expectation of high
prices and minimal benefit – neither
are necessarily true.
Affordable, practical and aestheticallypleasing
office furniture is not just for
large corporations. The small business
owner can now kit their workplace
out with contemporary desking and
seating that will boost employees’
wellbeing and productivity without
breaking the bank or compromising
on quality.
Ergonomics are essential in the
office environment. Purchasing good
ergonomic desks and seating will
improve your employees’ quality of
living by minimising pressure on
muscles and joints, increasing blood
flow, preventing muscle deterioration,
improving posture, and preventing
back and neck pain. This is why it’s
important to offer a sit/stand to all
workers, not just those with preexisting
conditions. It will improve
long-term wellbeing and lessen the
chance of absent staff due to health
problems.
Research has also shown that a
height-adjustable desk improves
concentration and productivity, and
can even help to burn as much as three
times as many calories as a standard
desk, by encouraging movement
throughout the day. Choosing sit/
stand desks will give you a healthy
return on your investment through
happier, healthier and harder-working
staff.
As this style of office furniture has
gained more and more popularity,
it has also become increasingly
accessible. Select a sit/stand desk that
lives up to the promise of being costeffective

Once you’ve bought your sit/stand,
it’s important to use it correctly.
Seated work needs to be regularly
broken up with standing work;
switching from sitting to standing
will produce the absolute best results.
It’s recommended that, throughout
a working day, you should spend a
minimum of two hours on your feet,
with an ideal of four.
As well as avoiding too much seated
work, remaining in a static standing
position should also be avoided. It’s
advisable to shift your weight between
legs in order to reduce fatigue. As well
as shifting weight, you should also
frequently adjust the posture of your
body throughout the day.

and general wellbeing will

Since the launch of the ‘Get Britain
Standing’ campaign two years ago, it
seems that health benefits of standing
up whilst working is being recognised
by both employers and employees.
People are now more likely to accept
that sitting for extended periods
without moving, may increase the
risk of the onset of cardio vascular
diseases, obesity, diabetes and general
unfitness.
Rapid technology advances, changing
the way we work, is also pushing
people into ever more sedentary life
styles. Long hours, often in seated
postures can not only affect our health
and general well-being, but also our
productivity and efficiency in the
workplace.
This does not mean, however, that we
should switch from prolonged sitting
to prolonged standing. Neither is good
– the human body is not designed
for static postures. Movement is the
key for maintaining a healthy body,
hence alternating between sitting
and standing is the answer. There
are no exact defined time periods of
sitting versus standing. It depends
on the individual and what they are
doing; however as general rule 10
to 15 minutes of standing for every
hour or so of being seated seems to be
beneficial.
Levent Çaglar, Chief Ergonomist
at FIRA, has been warning about
the dangers of prolonged sitting at
workplaces, as well as highlighting
how rapid changes in technology
have pushed people to more sedentary
lifestyles in schools, offices and at
home. Over the past few years he has
been advocating the use of standing
work surfaces in offices and schools
and has been at the forefront of getting
people to alternate between sitting
and standing while they work.
The furniture industry has been
responding by providing new and
innovative sit/stand solutions. These
desks are very popular in Scandinavia,
where it’s been estimated by Get
Britain Standing that over 90% of
office workers enjoy the health and
engagement benefits of being able
to easily switch between sitting and
standing.
Over recent years, as the desks have
grown in popularity, the price point
for a more basic desk has dropped.
There are now many affordable sit/
stand desks, not only electrically
operated, but also operated by various
mechanical mechanisms, even gas
assisted fast crank mechanisms.
It is not just furniture manufacturers
who are finding innovative solutions
to the sit/stand issue. Retro-fit
desk top sit/stand solutions such
as combined keyboard/monitor
arms are now available that fit on a
standard, fixed height, desk, allowing
the user to move easily from sitting
to standing. With such accessories,
it is now possible to transform
existing fixed height desks into sit/
stand workstations very quickly and
economically.
Levent continued: “Standing all day
is not a viable or doable solution as
people get tired. The best solution is to
switch between sitting and standing
by using sit-stand desks or have
alternative work surfaces available.
The option is a must for anyone who
already has back problems, but more
importantly, if you want to prevent
an increased risk of developing back
pain for your staff through prolonged
sitting at workplaces, you should at
least consider providing sit-stand
desks at your next refurbishment or
office relocation.”
