Welcome to the OFAS <strong>Spring</strong> journal, showcasing another array of exciting<br />

products and services provided by our members.<br />

In this issue we have three additional sections covering Clerkenwell Design<br />

Week <strong>2016</strong>, Furniture and Office Accessories and the highly popular Sit-Stand<br />

Desking. We hope you will find these appealing and beneficial.<br />

We are very pleased to be media partners for Clerkenwell Design Week for the<br />

fourth year running, supporting our members and those associated within<br />

the furniture industry. The Gallery, Clerkenwell have kindly offered OFAS the<br />

opportunity to base ourselves within their showroom at 21-22 Great Sutton<br />

Street during the event. Come along and introduce yourself! It would be<br />

great to put some of those names to faces!!<br />

The first OFAS Monthly Gap was very effective and well received by our<br />

readers. This additional publication has given OFAS members the opportunity<br />

to promote their products and services at any given point throughout the<br />

year. Being a smaller publication, the exposure of one’s advert is intensified,<br />

providing an effective and visual communication to our target audience.<br />

Perhaps you would like to exhibit a product in our next edition?<br />

I wanted to reiterate regarding the circulation of our journal, as some<br />

members believe the Journal is only targeted to the furniture industry. The<br />

huge database that OFAS has built up over the past 29 years covers not only<br />

the furniture industry but also end users and procurement officials of both<br />

small and large organisations based within Education, Government, Banking,<br />

IT and Hospitality to name but a few. So you see, it reaches every walk of life<br />

that you could possibly wish for.<br />

Re-Working – it’s the future!<br />

In today’s economic climate, many companies are opting to up-cycle their existing<br />

furniture. Many contracts have been won by Over2Hills resulting in the resizing of<br />

desks for various companies. It has become quite apparent that it makes sense to<br />

re-size and up-cycle office furniture at a fraction of the cost to buying new. This is<br />

achieved by (cutting it down) reducing the foot print, re edging and providing a fresh<br />

look at a fraction of the cost of a new product. All of Over2Hills up cycled products<br />

come with a whole of life recycle guarantee.<br />

Desks over the last 20 years have been manufactured wider at one end (800mm at<br />

one end and 1200mm at the other) to a accommodate a large monitor for a computer<br />

which was the size of a microwave oven (300mm deep), monitors now are as thick as<br />

an I pad (30 mm deep). As space in offices is now so expensive and with the increasing<br />

environmental sustainability awareness being an important factor in people lives,<br />

if you up cycle you will have a better-than-original item that didn’t require<br />

for Ergonomics in the Office<br />

There is significant scope for organisations to improve efficiency, health and safety and<br />

employee satisfaction by applying ergonomics in the working environment.<br />

Ergonomically designed<br />

workplaces, equipment<br />

and jobs aim to modify<br />

the environment to meet<br />

people’s needs. A furniture<br />

expert explains why<br />

ergonomics is important.<br />

“Ergonomics is the<br />

application of scientific<br />

information concerning<br />

humans to the design<br />

of objects, systems and<br />

environments for human<br />

use. Ergonomics comes into<br />

everything which involves<br />

people. Work systems,<br />

sports and leisure, health<br />

and safety should all embody<br />

ergonomics principles if well<br />

designed.” explains Levent<br />

Çaglar, Head of Ergonomics<br />

at FIRA International.<br />

Some areas to be considered in the office are:<br />

1.Safety<br />

• Safety is obviously the first concern – make sure products are safe, stable and fit for<br />

purpose by only using those that comply with current British Standards.<br />

2.Workstations<br />

• Make sure the workstation is large enough to accommodate all the users’ needs and<br />

equipment.<br />

• The use of height adjustable desking is recommended so that all staff can use a desk<br />

comfortably.<br />

3.VDU’s and keyboards<br />

• The optimal eye to monitor distance is 600mm, however some users may have different<br />

preferences and distances, between 500mm and 750 mm are acceptable.<br />

• There should be 100mm from the front edge of the workstation to the keyboard so that<br />

users can rest their wrists.<br />

4.Office seating<br />

• The seat must be compatible with the workstation, especially height, so easily adjustable<br />

seating is preferred.<br />

5.Lighting and temperature<br />

• Lighting and temperature can also influence a worker’s comfort and performance.<br />

• For general office working the recommended lighting level is around 500 lux, although<br />

walkways etc. may need higher lighting levels.<br />

• Getting the right temperature for all workers can be a challenge; the recommended<br />

temperature is between 19°C to 23°C, but find out what works best for the majority of<br />

your staff and work with that.<br />

When designing an ergonomic office remember that everybody is different,<br />

so try to allow for personal preferences wherever possible.<br />

A better understanding of the complex relationship between<br />

personality types and the working environment can enhance<br />

wellbeing and productivity through better office planning. The<br />

impact our workplaces have on wellbeing and productivity is a<br />

vital consideration influencing today’s office planning strategies.<br />

Organisations are moving away from pure open plan offices,<br />

increasingly investing in a more ‘humanised’ work environment<br />

featuring breakout spaces, informal meeting areas, quiet zones,<br />

private meeting rooms and hot desking facilities.<br />

Workplace furniture manufacturers KI Europe collaborated with<br />

business psychologists OPP to find out more about the relationship<br />

between personality types and the environments in which we work,<br />

and whether this had an impact on our productivity and sense of<br />

wellbeing. Using the MBTI® – the worlds most popular and wellknown<br />

personality assessment, OPP looked into the links between<br />

personality type and office conditions, exploring type differences for<br />

issues such as:<br />

• Preferred or ideal working environment<br />

• Satisfaction and happiness at work and how this is affected by<br />

the work environment<br />

• Personalisation of the work area<br />

• Likes and dislikes within the work environment<br />

Types in the workplace<br />

One of the exercises often used to help extraverts and introverts<br />

understand each other better, goes like this: Separate a group into<br />

extraverts and introverts and ask each to draw their ideal office<br />

environment. Comparing the results will typically show a quite<br />

clear difference between the priorities and preferences of the two<br />

groups. In the past, a number of links have been made between<br />

personality type and the working environment. For example, ‘The<br />

Negotiable Environment’ (Williams, Armstrong, & Malcolm, 1985)<br />

discussed office layout and allied factors in MBTI terms, and the<br />

‘Environmental Personality Type Assessment’ attempted to ‘type’<br />

the workplace (Salter, 1995). More recently, concerns have been<br />

raised about the impact of the modern office environment on<br />

introverts in particular (Cain, 2012). Open plan offices have become<br />

the norm, and desk sharing, hot desking and similar arrangements<br />

are becoming commonplace. As our research shows, such<br />

environments may inhibit wellbeing for some personality types.<br />

“HR often focuses on raising employee engagement through means<br />

they have a direct influence over – training, management structures,<br />

salaries, benefit packages. However, the physical environment<br />

itself can have a dramatic impact on the average employee’s<br />

day. Proximity of breakout and dining facilities, rooms to have<br />

confidential meetings or make sensitive phone calls, appropriate<br />

storage for personal or job-related materials, adjacency to amenities<br />

– these are just a few examples of elements of the physical<br />

environment that can help improve the worker experience.<br />

But these are seen as the domain<br />

of the Facilities Manager –<br />

whether in terms of workplace<br />

design, furniture procurement,<br />

or expenditure. HR invariably<br />

hold a wealth of knowledge that<br />

could help Facilities Management<br />

make better decisions regarding<br />

the working environment, and<br />

could do even more to gather and<br />

interpret data from employees.<br />

In addition to direct feedback<br />

through regular surveys, HR<br />

could also use psychology and<br />

psychometric tests such as the<br />

Myers Briggs Type Indicator<br />

(which they may already use<br />

for other purposes), to better<br />

understand the diverse needs<br />

of their teams in terms of their<br />

workspace. It goes without<br />

saying that one size doesn’t fit<br />

all, that one person’s ideal work<br />

environment might be another’s<br />

worst nightmare. A better<br />

understanding of who needs<br />

what, from a psychometric and<br />

practical perspective, can help<br />

to work together to get the<br />

mix right. This type of internal<br />

communication is essential to<br />

enrich the organisation as a<br />

whole, rather than data being<br />

held in silos. In addition to<br />

gathering data through surveys,<br />

simple motion sensors can be<br />

fitted to monitor the actual, rather<br />

than perceived usefulness of<br />

space and furniture – helping to<br />

measure the overall effectiveness<br />

of an evolving workplace<br />

strategy.”<br />

There is a near equal frequency<br />

of introverts to extraverts in a<br />

typical population. The statistics<br />

from the survey are based<br />

on OPP’s own data of the UK<br />

population. This split remains<br />

closely balanced when comparing<br />

exclusively male or female<br />

samples. Accommodating the<br />

needs of introverts within an<br />

office landscape does therefore<br />

have the potential to benefit a<br />

vast proportion of the workforce.<br />
